Session 9: Citizen/Police Interactions: Awareness and Strategies for the Classroom Room: EPAC 10 Presenter(s): George Anthony, Jr., James Jackson, and Cornelius Pitts, Jr. Description: Criminal Justice Faculty will present timely information on addressing current societal challenges and how they intersect law enforcement. Strategies for discussion and mitigation in the classroom will be discussed. Session 10: General Laboratory Safety Training Room: EPAC 5 Presenter(s): Gilbert Solis Description: The District’s Michigan Institute for Public Safety Education (MIPSE) will be presenting General Laboratory Safety Training. The topics of discussion will be Hazard Communications/GHS, Personal Protection Equipment and Lockout Tagout for employees and students. WAYNE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT FACULTY CONVOCATION SPRING 2016 “Emerging Trends in Community Colleges” JANUARY 9, 2016 Dr. Gerardo E. de los Santos is President and Chief Executive Officer of the League for Innovation in the Community College, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to catalyzing the community college movement. The League hosts conferences and institutes, develops print and digital resources, and leads projects and initiatives with more than 800 member institutions representing 9 different countries, over 160 corporate partners, and a host of other governmental and nonprofit agencies. In its continuing effort to make a positive difference for students and communities, the League is dedicated to improving student and organizational learning through innovation, experimentation, and institutional transformation. Dr. de los Santos earned an A.A. degree from Mesa Community College in Arizona, subsequently transferring to the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a B.A. in Rhetoric. He earned his master’s degree in English from Arizona State University, where he was honored as a Graduate Regents Fellow. Dr. de los Santos received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was named Distinguished Graduate. Dr. de los Santos has represented community colleges at the White House on multiple occasions and has and practice, leadership development, key trends in community colleges, alternative funding, as well as technology and STEM advancements in community colleges. He serves on over 14 national advisory, foundation, and editorial boards, including the ETS Community College Advisory Council, the Community College Research Center’s Advisory Board, Columbia University’s Community College Research Center’s Advisory Board, Change Magazine’s Editorial Board, and the Community College Survey of Student Engagement Board. While the recipient of many awards and honors, Dr. de los Santos was most recently recognized with the International Leadership Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development of the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Gerardo E. de los Santos is President and Chief Executive Officer of the League forInnovation in the Community College, an international nonprofit organization dedicated tocatalyzing the community college movement. The League hosts conferences and institutes,develops print and digital resources, and leads projects and initiatives with more than 800member institutions representing 9 different countries, over 160 corporate partners, and ahost of other governmental and nonprofit agencies. In its continuing effort to make apositive difference for students and communities, the League is dedicated to improvingstudent and organizational learning through innovation, experimentation, and institutionaltransformation.

Dr. de los Santos earned an A.A. degree from Mesa Community College in Arizona, subsequently transferringto the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a B.A. in Rhetoric. He earned his master’s degreein English from Arizona State University, where he was honored as a Graduate Regents Fellow. Dr. de losSantos received his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was named Distinguished Graduate.
