2005 Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, full member Program Description: Narrative: My research program is focused on identifying and understanding genes and gene products affecting economically important traits in dairy cattle, beef cattle and swine. Our approach involves genetic, genomic and proteomic methods as the primary tools for our studies. We are currently utilizing DNA marker genotyping for quantitative trait loci detection and fine-mapping studies, DNA microarrays, Serial Analysis of Gene Expression libraries, and quantitative real-time PCR techniques to study gene expression, and 2-D gel electrophoresis and mass spectroscopy for proteomics studies. Once the genes and/or their gene products involved in these processes have been identified, additional genetic, molecular biological and biochemical approaches will be applied to characterize the mechanisms involved in these complex processes. Goals (next five years) Identify biomarkers and targets for osteoarthritis disease detection and treatment Identify genes affecting milk components in dairy cattle that are incorporated into a selection program Identify biological pathways affected by trace minerals in beef cattle diets Accomplishments: (since 9/2003) Research— First to characterize gene transcripts present in a dual benefit model of osteoarthritis in the pig Fine-mapped quantitative trait loci affecting pregnancy rate and productive life in dairy cattle Mentored 15 graduate students

None Program Description: Narrative: My program has had two main areas of emphasis. The first is pig behavioral genetics and the second is the genetics of feed efficiency in beef cows. We have recently become involved in collaboration with a medical school using the pig as a biomedical model. Goals (next five years) Increase the amount of extramural support coming into the program. This will allow us to increase our productivity by adding post-docs or research scientists to the team. Unfortunately, the availability of extramural funding will ultimately determine the direction of our research. We have been increasing the number of Ph.D. students and reducing the number of MS. students on the team. We hope to continue that trend. Expand the scope of our multidisciplinary beef efficiency team and focus factors affecting efficiency other than feed efficiency. On the pig side we expect to shift our emphasis away from pig behavioral genetics and production research in favor of biomedical research. This decision is being driven purely by the lack of extramural funding for genetics research related to food animal production. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research My greatest accomplishment in research to date is establishing an active graduate training program (I currently serve as (co)chair for 6 students) which generates scholarly publications. This was accomplished by establishing an extramurally funded program. When I arrived in 2001 the Animal Science department quantitative genetics group had a distinguished reputation in research and graduate training, but a very modest track record relative to attracting extramural funding. Our program is a leader in the field of pig behavioral genetics. I also lead a multidisciplinary team funded by American Angus and addressing efficiency of beef cattle production.

Teaching My greatest accomplishment is that I have taken ANS440 “Selection of Domestic Animals” which is an elective from an annual enrollment of less than 20 students in 2001 to a current enrollment of 74 (counting traditional and distance education students). The course is now a “duel listed” as a graduate/undergraduate course (ANS440/ANS540). In addition, it has now been offered twice via distance education using the internet. I reorganized a graduate level course ANS708 Genetics of Animal Improvement. The objective of the course was to teach students how to establish and implement a genetic improvement program in the food animal industry. I also coordinate a course which includes 6, one credit hour modules for graduate students offered. I am also very active in undergraduate research with, on average, 4 undergraduate students working on our team each semester. I serve as academic advisor for approximately 35 undergraduate students. Extension Though I do not have a formal extension appointment, I have been actively involved in out reach programs. As a result of those activities, I was elected and served a two year term as president of the National Swine Improvement Federation board of directors. I was recently selected as the new Executive Director of the Beef Improvement Federation. I have also served as program chair for the educational symposium of the North Carolina Cattlemen’s Conference. Graduate Students:

2007 Outstanding Teacher Award, NC State University Program Description: Narrative and Goals: Program focus in the area of ruminant metabolism is on increasing efficiency of nitrogen retention by growing animals. Insulin is a regulator that plays a key role in ruminant metabolism and enhances the efficiency of amino acid use in growing animals. Dietary long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA) increase insulin sensitivity and will be used to define the role of membrane phospholipids in underlying cellular changes that result in enhanced efficiency. We are also evaluating the role of LC n-3 PUFA to increase insulin sensitivity in pigs. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research: Research in the area of gastric ulcers in swine focused on developing a model to produce damage to the gastroesophageal mucosa and designing experiments to address the mechanisms linking diet to tissue damage. We defined the synergistic role of bile acids and pH in stomach damage and the potential use of sodium bicarbonate in the water supply as a prophylactic for gastric ulcers. Strategies to increase the survival of low birth weight pigs include removing pigs from the sow and rearing them using manufactured

76

liquid diets. We determined amino acid requirements of neonatal pigs and evaluated synthetic amino acid addition to milk-based low crude protein diets to provide a less costly yet nutritionally adequate manufactured diet. Inefficient use of nitrogen by cattle contributes to environmental pollution. Results of research with growing cattle demonstrated that dietary LC n-3 PUFA increase insulin sensitivity. Teaching Undergraduate: Developed and taught each fall, ANS 230, Nutrition of Domestic Animals and ANS 231, Nutrition of Domestic Animals Laboratory (lab now separate). Undergraduate students participate as TAs for the laboratory. Developed and taught fall of even years, ANS 453/553, Growth and Development of Domestic Animals (80% responsibility). The dual level includes a separate meeting with graduates students enrolled in the course to discuss literature related to growth and development. An honors option is available for ANS 230 and ANS 453. Participated in ALS 398H, Honors Seminar (Spring,1998-2000) and Chaired the College Honors Committee in 1999. Initiated and Chaired the program committee for the First CALS Undergraduate Teaching Symposium, 1999. Mentored students in ALS 498/499, Honors Teaching/Research (8 students) and ANS/NTR/BCH 493, Special projects (23 students). Graduate: Developed and taught spring of even years, ANS/NTR 701, Amino Acid Metabolism. Developed and taught spring of odd years, ANS/NTR 785, Digestion and Metabolism in Ruminants (25% responsibility). Program Description: Program Objectives: To support the development of in vitro systems for the production of livestock embryos by investigating (1) mechanisms affecting embryo and fetal development; and, (2) mechanisms controlling the maturation of mammalian oocytes Mechanisms affecting embryo and fetal development. We have examined the effects of in vitro embryo production systems on embryo, fetal and placental development in cattle and were among the first investigators to document the occurrence of abnormal fetal development associated with in vitro embryo production systems. We have characterized these effects and have studied potential mechanisms associated with Abnormal Offspring Syndrome, identifying alternations in expression of both imprinted and non-imprinted genes involved in the regulation of fetal growth and development. We are currently focusing our investigations on sequences associated with the insulin-like growth factor type 2 imprinting control region. Mechanisms controlling the maturation of mammalian oocytes. Identification of novel mRNAs expressed during germinal vesicle breakdown in bovine and murine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC). We have identified and sequenced several novel mRNAs that are expressed shortly after the start of FSH-induced in vitro maturation in bovine COC but are not expressed when COC have been prevented from maturing by culture with a transcriptional inhibitor. In addition, we have used SAGE to compare the transcriptomes of murine COC cultured in the presence or absence of a transcriptional inhibitor to identify additional candidate genes involved in the resumption of meiosis. Functional analysis using short-interfering (si)RNA for TRAM-6 and Nr4A1, novel transcripts associated with oocyte maturation in cattle. TRAM-6 is a novel mRNA transcript that is expressed shortly after the start of COC maturation. Similarly, Nr4A1 is a transcript identified in murine COC using SAGE analysis and whose presence during in vitro maturation was subsequently reconfirmed in bovine COC. Using siRNAs targeted against TRAM-6 or Nr4A1 mRNAs, we have assessed their functional roles during oocyte maturation and found that both TRAM-6 siRNA and Nr4A1 siRNA decreased expression of their specific mRNAs in bovine COC and also decreased the incidence of oocytes undergoing meiotic maturation. Program Impacts: Understanding the regulation of fetal development will lead to methods for identifying normal and abnormal embryos resulting from in vitro production procedures, and to improved systems for producing embryos in vitro. Understanding mechanisms regulating the resumption of meiosis in mammalian oocytes will lead to methods for manipulating the timing of meiotic maturation. This is useful for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of procedures used for assisted reproductive technologies. Identification of specific mRNAs regulating meiotic maturation will allow the development of systems to improve the developmental competence of in vitro matured mammalian oocytes by specifically arresting nuclear maturation while facilitating cytoplasmic maturation during continued culture. Identification of specific mRNAs regulating the resumption of meiosis in mammalian oocytes may provide novel opportunities for the development of gene-targeted contraceptive methods useful for the manipulation of reproductive cycles in livestock and other mammalian species. Other Pertinent Information: Although I do not have an official appointment in the area of extension, I feel it is important to be involved with dissemination of information about animal agriculture and, in particular, about animal biotechnology. During the past 13 years I have participated in efforts directed by Dr. Elizabeth Wilson (Department of Agricultural and Extension Education) to develop curricula focused on agricultural biotechnologies offered for advanced high school students. This resulted in the development of the course, “Agricultural Biotechnology: Plants, Animals and the Environment”, which has become the highest selling high school biotechnology course curriculum in the nation. We have also offered numerous workshops each summer to instruct high school teachers in laboratory exercises associated with this curriculum. To date, we have trained more than 200 high school, middle school and community college teachers from across the state. My specific responsibilities for course development and workshop instruction have been in the areas of animal biotechnology and ethical perspectives relative to the application of animal biotechnology.

Methane production by microbial action is a dynamic process. It is essential to measure methane rather than use stoichiometric equations for accurate estimates. Ecological balance in the rumen is delicate, diverse and highly adaptable. Identification of specific microbes is critical to the understanding of metabolic processes in the rumen. Mineral requirements by rumen microbes may differ from recommended levels and vary due to physiological status and ruminal environment. Pasture or small grains silage can replace almost 60% of corn silage in a total mixed ration without having a negative impact on animal performance. Program Description: Narrative: Despite my official appointment, the bulk of my professional efforts are associated with teaching and advising. I teach one section of ANS 201 each semester with approximately 22 students per section. In addition, I teach one section of ANS 309 each spring with approximately 40 students as well as one section of ANS 052 each fall with approximately 35 students. In the last year, I have advised over 90 undergraduate and Agricultural Institute students as well as serving as the Block & Bridle Adviser to the Animal Science Club. Student evaluations of my teaching effectiveness consistently meet or exceed departmental averages and peer reviews are highly supportive. Goals (next five years) Improve the department’s ability to adequately train and place graduates of the A.A. and B.S. degree programs into animal and agricultural fields at competitive salaries. Although they may be well trained in the sciences, many of our recent graduates end up in unrelated fields due to more attractive employment options in other areas. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research My research activities have involved working with research faculty to incorporate the use of real-time ultrasonic evaluation in existing projects to supplement study objectives or assist with evaluating appropriate harvest dates of the animals involved.

Teaching All my courses incorporate Vista’s web-based, hybrid course format in addition to traditional lecture and hands-on laboratory learning experiences. Student evaluations of courses indicate highly effective teaching methods and recommendations to fellow students to enroll in my classes. Since becoming an Adviser to the Animal Science Club in 2002, that organization has tripled in size, has over 100 active members per semester, has a $50,000 annual budget and has established a scholarship endowment with the NC Ag. Foundation worth over $43,000. I was closely involved with the planning and completion of the new Beef Educational Unit at Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratories and helped raise over $27,000 in cash and gifts to complete the facility. The unit opened in 2003 and is used heavily in teaching and extension activities as well as serving as a host location for countless committee meetings from the university abroad. Served as coordinator of Summer Orientation for approximately 200 incoming freshmen and transfer students in the summer of 2008. Also served as departmental coordinator for LPM students in the fall of 2008. Extension My most successful program is the initial development of the North Carolina Certified Beef Production program, coordination of numerous display presentations across the state and the development of the NCCBP training manual. Over 1200 producers were trained and certified in the original program and it continues today in its revised format. Since adding a sizable teaching component, my extension activities have been reduced significantly. My current activities include assisting with planning and coordinating our 3-day Livestock Agent Training event held in early August each year. In addition, I continue to serve as a resource specialist in the area of beef cattle production and marketing for livestock agents across NC. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research Despite not having a research appointment, I have conducted some research on alternative feeds for meat goats and for horses (see publications). Teaching Since 1998, I have taught seven different courses multiple times (usually one to two courses per semester). Two of the courses were co-developed by me (ANS 110, Intro to Equine Science; ANS 408, Small Ruminant Management). I have been the leader on two major curriculum revisions for the B.S. in Animal Science degree. I coordinate the scheduling of all Animal Science courses. I chair the Animal Science Undergraduate Education Committee, and I serve on the college Courses and Curricula Committee. I am responsible for requesting, procuring, and assessing our departmental Educational Technology Fee (ETF) money (average allocation for each of the last three years was $86,000). I am responsible for the assessment of our B.S. in Animal Science degree, and I write an annual report for the college. I write the course and curricula revisions; we have recently developed new courses, separated the labs from lecture in all of our required courses, and have undergone a major curriculum revision. My sabbatical (Fall 2008) was designed to assist with the assessment and continuous improvement of our curricula and courses. I am proud of my college, university, and national teaching awards. Extension I give invited presentations on herbivore nutrition, ration formulation, and general management of herbivores (primarily horses and small ruminants). I assist with the New Agent Training and work with Livestock Agents when they have questions. I serve as a judge for state youth quiz bowl teams (dairy and horse). I coordinated Farm Animal Days, which drew more than 6,000 visitors over a three-day period, from 1992 to 2004. Graduate Students:

Other Pertinent Information: ETF budget Every year (beginning with the 2000/2001 academic year), I have served as the P.I. for the departmental ETF (Educational Technology Fee) allocations. I request (and justify) all expected expenditures for the upcoming year, then I monitor and supervise all of the money that is allocated. I am required to report all expenditures at the end of each year. During the year, I meet with faculty and with a student committee to assess the expenditures and make adjustments for the upcoming year. The allocated amount I was responsible for each year from 2000 through 2008, respectively, was: $72,954; $70,000; $70,098; $71,600; $68,000; $79,000; $94,000; $79,000; $86,000. Teaching Evaluations Since my appointment is mostly teaching, I believe teaching evaluations are pertinent. Of my 90% teaching appointment, approximately 50% is for administration and 40% is for actual teaching. For teaching evaluations, a 5.0 is a perfect score and our departmental goal is to be at 4.0 or above.

Program Description: Narrative: My program focuses on delivering timely information to all NC pork producers but primarily to swine veterinary specialists working for the larger producers. This often is in the form of applied research projects undertaken on the stakeholders’ farms. Goals (next five years) To continue all of the programs I’m currently providing focusing especially on the areas of swine euthanasia and antibiotic resistance. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research Since promotion to full professor I have been co- or principal investigator on grants totaling $3,015,667. These grants have focused in my 2 primary areas of interest, euthanasia and antibiotic resistance. Teaching In 2005 I organized my first Study Abroad program which I did in association with the University of Melbourne. That year I had 10 students and was convinced of the value of such a program and its importance in developing our undergraduates for work in an international economy. Subsequently, I took the program to the University of Queensland because it offered a better learning experience. In total, I have taken 50 students including the 18 registered for 2009. This has made my program the most successful Study Abroad program for CALS. In addition I teach in FSA 520 Preharvest Food Safety and VMF062 Livestock and Poultry Diseases.

Extension I schedule, program, speak and moderate a bimonthly meeting of the North Carolina Pig Veterinary group. This group has met regularly since I introduced the program in 1989. Veterinarians from all the major pork-producing companies in NC attend including Smithfield Foods, Goldsboro Milling, JC Howard, and others including veterinarians in private practice. In addition, representatives from Pfizer Animal Health, Novartis, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, and Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health regularly attend as well as veterinarians with Rollins Diagnostic Laboratory. These veterinarians have responsibility for health, care and welfare of approximately 1.28 million sows and their progeny. This program is considered of such value that it is registered for CE credits for veterinary registration in the state of North Carolina. In summary, we are a major provider of the educational need of all veterinarians in North Carolina who work with swine and consequently this is a major component of my outreach program. Since 1992, I have organized and spoken at the annual Healthy Hogs Seminar. Currently, we hold this at the Sampson Community College in cooperation with Dr. Steve Matthis. Proceedings from every year are available on our web site: http://mark.asci.ncsu.edu/HealthyHogs/default.htm Since January 26, 1998 this site has been accessed 10,548 times. Specific extension activities that have not only local but also national and international reach include: The complex and highly emotional issues of both steady-state euthanasia and mass-depopulation have been a major component of my efforts since I realized in 1995 that this was a highly sensitive and controversial issue for the pork industry. At that time, few realized the potential problems and this enables me to research and follow the issue as it has evolved. Finally, it now receiving the attention it truly deserves and research monies are becoming available. Since 1999 I have served on the AASV Welfare committee which among other issues (e.g., gestation crates) developed the AASV’s policy on euthanasia. Subsequently, this became the responsibility of the National Pork Board/AASV working group on euthanasia of which I have been a member since its inception in 2007. During this time we have rewritten the joint AASV/NPB On-Farm Guidelines on Euthanasia, given substantial input on the AVMA guidelines on euthanasia and assisted in the prosecution of violations of people who have inhumanely killed pigs. Currently we are developing the standard operating procedures and decision trees for mass depopulations as well as steady-state swine euthanasia. Owner of AASV-L, the communication list-serve AASV members. Total AASV membership is 1683; of these, 1113 live in the USA, and of these, 52 live in North Carolina. This serves as a confidential venue for veterinarians to discuss diseases. We established this in 2009 to serve, among other things, as a discussion forum for potentially new and/or emerging diseases. Chair of the AASV Communications Committee. Swine Health Domain editor for the Pork Information Gateway since 2007. This project replaces the hardcopy Pork Industry Handbook but being web-based enables more materials to be available (e.g., videos) to the international audience. Currently (April 3, 2009) there are 3468 registered users. North Carolina has 157 registered users and the NCSU co-brand site is the 6th most visited co-brand with 223,948 hits (as of Nov. 2007). 1978(?) Sigma Xi 1980(?) Recipient, March of Dimes Basil O’Connor Starter Research Grant ? Gamma Sigma Delta Program Description: Narrative: Petters was hired in 1983 to pursue research in biotechnology and to teach at the graduate level. Petters is a member of the Biotechnology, Physiology and Genomics graduate faculty. In the past ten years, Petters’ research emphasis has shifted from the study of embryo development in vitro to the use of transgenic pigs as genetic models of human disease. This shift allowed Petters to expand his biotechnology interests in reproductive physiology, embryo micromanipulation and genetics to make contributions in biomedicine. In order to support this effort, funds were obtained from the National Institutes of Health and the Foundation Fighting Blindness. The rhodopsin transgenic model of retinitis pigmentosa is well recognized within the scientific community studying forms of human blindness. This model has and is being used to evaluate clinical and therapeutic interventions in the disease progression. Studies are currently in progress to make models of macular degeneration and Marfan’s syndrome. These studies presaged the current interests in using livestock in the study of human disease, an application that broadens the impact of animal science research. Spin offs of these studies include synchronization and superovulation of embryo donors in the pig and the study of spermatogonial stem cells using transgenic pigs. While being hired to teach at the graduate level, Petters has been called on to teach primarily at the undergraduate level. This effort has featured the development of new courses in relevant areas and the teaching of a wide variety of courses. Courses taught during the past ten years include: ANS 105 Introduction to Companion Animals (3 times, last in 2007); ANS 400 Companion Animal Management (1, 1999); ANS 215 Basic Agricultural Genetics (6, last in 2003); ANS 330 Laboratory Animal Science (5, last in 2009); ANS 706 Mammalian Embryo Manipulation (2, last in 2009). Petters co-advises the Companion Animal Club and advises approximately 30 undergraduates. Goals (next five years) To develop transgenic pig models of macular degeneration and to begin to archive transgenic pig germplasm

2008 NCCES “Special Specialist Award” 2006 ASAS Southern Section “Extension Award” Program Description: Narrative: A combined research and education program has the goal of improving nutritional management of beef cattle through improved harvested and grazed forage management, use of byproduct feeds, and use of marketing programs that derive value added from improved management. The program is delivered through various avenues including producer meetings, writing in the popular press (primarily the Carolina Cattle Connection), and regional/national meetings. Emphasis on management to minimize environmental impact of beef cattle grazing has been an increasing emphasis in the last 5 years. This work has been primarily focused on winter feeding management which is the most critical aspect of environmental management. Recently we have also been focused on delivering a statewide program on drought management. Poor cattle and pasture management exacerbates drought problems, so the program’s goal is to help cattle producers realize the importance of good overall management to being resilient to drought. As the leader of Livestock/Forage Extension Agent Training significant effort is put into that area. We conduct an annual Agent Training Conference and a monthly webinar series to address agent training needs. Goals (next five years) Continue to maintain 2 or 3 graduate students in the program. Continue to obtain funding for increased focus on improving winter feeding management. Continue to maintain excellence of the stockpiled fescue research and education program.

Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research Research trials have been conducted to determine the value of byproduct feeds including corn stover, cotton gin trash, sweetpotatoes, soyhulls, wheat midds, corn gluten feed, whole cottonseed and cotton textile mill byproduct. Economic analyses have shown that utilization of by-product feeds greatly reduces feed cost per unit of production. Utilization of stockpiled fescue with varying endophyte status by growing beef calves has been a recent emphasis. Supplementation strategies for cattle fed forage-based diets are currently being evaluated. Use of cattle in swine and poultry waste management systems using forages to receive waste nutrients has been conducted with a current major emphasis on nutrient runoff from sites receiving different management strategies. Extension Developed and delivered an educational program for improved nutritional management of beef cattle, sheep and goats in North Carolina. Program Description: Narrative: Research is focused on mineral metabolism of domestic animals. Research program is primarily centered around trace minerals with emphases on elucidating metabolic functions, bioavailability (and factors affecting bioavailability), and requirements of trace minerals. Recent research has examined trace mineral transporters and their regulation in cattle and pigs. Goals (next five years) 1) Define dietary and genetic factors that affect gene and protein expression of copper transport and chaperone proteins in cattle 2) Determine bioavailability of trace minerals from a variety of feedstuffs using an in vitro simulated digestion system Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research: Our research with chromium in cattle recently resulted in FDA approval for use of supplemental chromium (as chromium propionate) in cattle diets. It is expected that chromium supplementation will be widely used in lactating dairy cows and in feeding programs for stressed beef calves. Our research has identified changes in growth and intestinal metal transporters in copper deficient bovines and demonstrated that long term copper deficiency does not alter brain prion biology.

2007 College of Agriculture Early Achievement in Research Award, Iowa State University Program Description: Narrative: My program is centered in conducting dual-benefit research relating to nutrition and health. My laboratory pursues two major areas of research: 1) Mineral nutrition in relation to bone health, and 2) Development of protein based antibiotics. We utilize swine as both our target and our model species, and focus primarily on early-life events. Our current mineral nutrition research focus is determining the role of calcium and phosphate nutrition on tissue-specific stem cell activity (mesenchymal stem cells and satellite cells) particularly as it pertains to the developmental programming of the musculoskeletal system. Our protein based antibiotic work is centered on utilizing biotechnology to improve the efficacy of colicins for use in both the animal health and the human food safety fields. Goals (next five years) I have three primary goals for the next five years: 1) Establish my program as a premier research program in the field of developmental programming of bone and muscle. 2) Improve the cost-effectiveness of our protein-based antibiotics to allow its entry into the marketplace. 3) Bring greater National and international recognition of our nutrition and swine research programs in the Department. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research At NCSU (from 8/16/07): I have obtained almost $600,000 in funding which has allowed me to generate a great deal of preliminary data in the field of nutritional programming of stem cells which will allow me to be competitive for Federal funding. We have 1 manuscript published, and 5 others in various stages of preparation relating to mineral nutrition and lineage allocation/differentiation potential of both mesenchymal stem cells and satellite cells. We hope to be able to convert these preliminary studies into Federal funding from multiple sources.

2004-2006 Extension Associate Animal Science North Carolina State University 2007-2009 Extension Assistant Professor Animal Science North Carolina State University Program Description: Narrative: My extension and applied research program has been focused on providing answers to common production questions in western North Carolina and developing a Beef Quality Assurance program throughout North Carolina. Extension programming has been focused on improving management of beef and meat goat herds in this portion of the state. Programming focus has included grazing management practices, hay production and use of a management calendar for beef and meat goat producers. The development of a BQA program has been very successful in North Carolina. We currently have approximately 1000 certified producers along with over 65 certified trainers. One key development from BQA was the development of a program dealing with stock trailer transportation of cattle which I took the lead on. This program has been distributed to all state BQA coordinators and includes a bumper sticker, fact sheet and video. Goals (next five years) My goals for the next five years are divided into three areas Beef Quality Assurance, Extension Programming and Applied Research. I hope to continue to build the North Carolina BQA program and be an active participant in the National Program. Through this program I hope to help solve issues facing the beef industry. I believe that extension programming needs to evolve into something different than the common county meetings. I am planning on developing a short course program, similar to a master cattlemen’s program that will be deliverable by county agents. Applied research will continue to consist of projects investigating means of improving production practices in western North Carolina. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/2004) Research: Effects of storage system on the DM recovery and changes in nutritive value of cool season grass hay

over a 14-month storage period. The effects of management practices on the profitability, and performance of cow-calf pairs grazing cool

season grass pastures. The effects of management practices on forage production, availability, and species composition of cool

season grass pastures grazed by cow-calf pairs.

Performance of meat goat kids grazing orchard grass pastures interseeded with sorghum-sudan or crabgrass.

Alternative methods of controlling hoof growth in meat goats. Cool season grass variety trial Effects of concentration of moisture at baling on the storage characteristics and nutritive value of large

round bales. Corn silage hybrid performance trial. Feasibility of growth promoting implants during a 45-d preconditioning period. Extension I have made 67 educational/extension presentations within North Carolina since my appointment in 2004. These have included 50 county programs, 15 regional educational meetings and field days and two invited presentations out of state. Topics have included: Losses in hay production, storage and feeding, Forage production and feed quality, North Carolina Beef Quality Assurance Program, Meat goat production and management, Beef production and management, Grazing systems for beef production, and Overviews of extension and research programs. I have also served as the state coordinator for the Beef Quality Assurance program, during this time the program has been revitalized. I served as a project leader in developing the Stock Trailer Transportation Program for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association working with specialists from Nebraska, Tennessee and Texas. I have also taken the lead in developing three fact sheets published by the college.

Program Description: Narrative: My research program addresses nutritional & biochemical components of the etiology associated with high postnatal mortality by examining the biochemical competency of piglets to oxidize fatty acids during early postnatal life following dietary and hormonal manipulations. In particular, the ontogeny and regulation of hepatic fatty acid oxidation are studied at cellular and molecular levels. The focus of the program is based upon the dramatically low level of hepatic fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis expressed in neonatal pigs compared to other species. Current project,” Induction of precocious milk-fat oxidation in neonatal pig” is supported by National Research Initiative Competitive Grant from the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service. Goals (next five years) The role of PPAR in regulation of fatty acid oxidation in neonatal pigs will be further investigated. Specifically, the effect of retinoic acid (through RXRÿ heterodimerization with PPAR ÿ) will be studied using hepatocyte in primary culture. Also the role of fibroblast growth factor 21 in fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis will be investigated in neonatal pigs and lactation cows. A proposal focused on this will be written and submitted to federal agents for funding. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research To investigate the effect of hormones and peroxisome proliferators on CPT I activity and its regulation in fatty acid metabolism, a series of experiments has been conducted. The results from these experiments most likely will contribute to reduce the high morbidity and mortality rates seen in suckling piglets. We demonstrated that dietary clofibrate increases mitochondrial oxidation of palmitate and CPT I activity in the neonatal pigs. We also tested the kinetics of CPT I and carnitine status of neonatal and young pigs, the effect of maternal dietary clofibrate on fatty acid oxidation and development of CPT in newborn piglets

and the effects of postnatal clofibrate administration on fatty acid oxidation of neonatal piglets to define better the time and dose for a practical application of the agonist, chlofibrate in the high-risk piglets. Teaching A nutritional biochemistry laboratory with HPLC, radio-HPLC, GC, GC/MS, radio-enzyme analytical systems as well as equipment and instruments for molecular biology were established since 1998. Graduate students, undergraduate students and technicians have been trained to use these equipments by analyzing samples from their researches since 1998. Extension Graduate Students:

1999 Outstanding Facultry Member – NCSU Department of Animal Sciences 1998 Honorary FFA State Degree Program Description: Narrative: In 13 years I have had the privilege of holding three positions in the Department of Animal Sciences. These positions provided a broad exposure to different aspects of North Carolina agriculture as well as the College. Having taught six different courses, conducted both youth and adult extension programs, and a number of research projects, my career at NCSU has been one of diversity rather than focus. Recently I assumed responsibility for the College’ s Animal Agro-Security Program. Goals (next five years) Two primary areas of focus will be emphasized during the next five years. First, the REINS program will need to be redefined and organized to fit within the new reality of Extension. This will require extensive collaboration with all levels of the organization as well as the community of volunteers. Second, the Animal Agro-Security Program needs to be developed and promoted across the organization. Accomplishments: (since 1/1/1998) Research 1. Coordinated the 2007-2009 North Carolina Equine Study. Funding was $500,000 provided by the NC Legislature to determine demographic and economic impact information. Collaborative effort with East Carolina University, Western Carolina University, and the Sanford Holshouser Group. This study resulted in a new method of determining missing data points in studies for which the total number of N was not previously known (NCSU MEREO Method). In addition, a multipronged approach to determining industry economic impact was determined. 2. Schackleford Banks Wild Horses, a Nutritional Survey, 2005-2007. M.J. Yoder, S. Stuska, and C.Bradshaw. The forage and habitat information collected will be used to determine optimum carrying capacity so that desirable stocking rates are maintained on the island.

Teaching (20%) Spring semesters, Teach ANS 303 Principles of Equine Evaluation, Fall semesters, ANS 480-002 Advanced Horse Judging. Student evaluations for these courses are significantly higher than either the departmental or college means. Extension (80%) 1. Coordinate the Regional Equine Information Network System (REINS) Program. This adult volunteer program prepares volunteers to assist County Extension Agents in the development and conduct of educational programs for local horse owners. A highlight of the program is the REINS Certification Training that provides 32 hours of intense horse management training for volunteers. The past four years we have averaged certifying 32 volunteers annually. The trainings have been so effective, that equine rescue organizations have sent their volunteers through the trainings. 2. Coordinated the NCSU Equine Breeding Management Short course, a four day course designed to provide horse owners with an understanding of equine reproductive physiology, best management practices for enhancing reproductive efficiency. The course has consistently sold out with participants from 5-7 states annually. 3. Worked with the NCSU-Ag Foundation to initiate formation of the 4-H Youth Livestock Endowment. This program was later formalized by Dr. Brian Faris and now provides funding for many of the state level 4-H youth livestock programs. Graduate Students:
