Maiden Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Ghana held at HTU

The 3rd quarter of 2019 has been very successful considering the activities the University undertook during the period. Ho Technical University hosted the

maiden Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Ghana. This maiden event attracted over 200 participants from all the Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Ghana, including researchers and presenters who came all the way from Germany, Australia and Nigeria. The Special Guest of Honour was the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo. HTU came top in the 4th American Chicken Cooking Competition for all Technical Universities in Ghana held

on 29th August, 2019, at the Flair Catering Institute in Accra. The competition was organised by the USA Chicken and Eggs Export Council. A final year HND student of the Hospitality and Tourism Management Department, Miss Evelyn Benyiwaa Yankson, who represented the University, was adjudged the overall Best Winner of the Competition. The overall winner, Miss Evelyn Benyiwaa Yankson, won a cake mixer and fully paid Internship package with one of Ghana’s best hotels, Labadi Beach Hotel. The Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management also received a six-burner cooker.

The Department presented the award items to the Vice-Chancellor on the 4th day of September, 2019. at the F.O. Kwami Council Chamber, HTU.The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ben Quarshie Honyenuga, commended the team of students and lecturers who participated in the competition for holding the flag of Ho Technical University high, adding to the numerous awards won by the

Dr. Ametefee K. Normanyo is a researcher and an economist with over 30 years

teaching experience at various levels of education in Ghana. He holds a Bachelor degree in Economics with Statistics from University of Ghana, a Post graduate Diploma in Education, a Master of Philosophy degree in Economics and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics, all, from University of Cape Coast, Ghana. In addition to his academic qualifications, he is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a Charted Management Consultant (CMC). His areas of research expertise include development economics, environmental and resource economics with special interest in fisheries, environmental and health effects of gold mining. Dr Normanyo has been teaching Economics, Project Management and allied courses for over 15 years at Ho Technical University.He was appointed the Campus HIV and AIDS Co-ordinator (2006-2013) to, among other things, implement the HIV and AIDS Policy for Ho Polytechnic (now Ho Technical University) with a US$66,000 Teaching and Learning Innovation Fund (TALIF) support. Also, he implemented two (2) Ghana Multi-Sectoral HIV and AIDS Programme (MSHAP) sub-projects in 2008 and 2009. Dr. Normanyo has been a member of several committees and sub committees of Council of the University. He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences of Ho Technical University.Dr. Normanyo consulted for USAID Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project on Policy analysis of fisheries subsidies in Ghana between March – September, 2016; ECORYS Netherland BV, Macro & Sector Policies on Cost Benefit Analysis Training to the Public Investment Division (PID), Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MOFEP), Ghana in 2012.

department in the past. Prof. Honyenuga admonished students to make the best out of every opportunity the University presents them. He said; “We encourage students and industry practitioners who seek to acquire knowledge and build career in Hospitality to take advantage of the opportunities offered by Ho Technical University.”

Miss Evelyn Benyiwaa Yankson expressed her appreciation to the lecturers of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management for taking her and her colleagues through a thorough training that had a great impact on their ability as students, to excel in the hospitality industry.

Edward Kwame Ayimey has been appointed the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Ho Technical

University after the position became vacant as a result of the appointment of Professor Ben Q. Honyenuga as the Vice-Chancellor. Edward Ayimey was recommended by the Academic Board as the most senior Dean at the time for the position.Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Honyenuga was the substantive Pro-Vice-Chancellor. The newly appointed Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor will act for the unexpired tenure of the previous Pro-Vice -Chancellor per the Statute 16:7 of the Ho Technical University Statutes: “In the event of any casual vacancy in the office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, occurring by reason of resignation, incapacity, or death, or any other cause, Council shall on the recommendations of the Academic Board, appoint

the most Senior Dean of Faculty/School to act as Pro- Vice Chancellor for the residue of the term of office of the outgoing Pro-Vice-Chancellor.”At a short handing over ceremony in the F.O. Kwami Council Chamber on the 9th day of August, 2019, Prof. Ben Honyenuga admonished Edward Ayimey to give off his best to advance the course of the University. He expressed confidence in the new Acting. Pro-Vice-Chancellor to excel judging from his past experience as Vice-Rector and Dean of HTU Business School.Prof. Ben Honyenuga officially handed over to the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Edward Kwame Ayimey. Mr. Ayimey expressed his gratitude to the Academic Board, the Vice-Chancellor and Council for the appointment. He promised to do his best in his new capacity to support the work of the Vice-Chancellor for the overall success of the University.

GLOBAL CODE SUMMER PROGRAMME

The Department of Computer Science in collaboration with Global Code, UK organized its first Global Code Summer Programme (GCSP) in HTU from 8th July to 27th July, 2019. Global Code Summer Program is a training programme held during summer to train students in building systems using Python, Raspberry Pi, Linux, Git and Github, Internet of Things (IoT), Discrete Electronics and HTML5. The training programme , which lasted for three weeks, was to instill in students a sense of what it means to be a Professional Software Engineer. The facilitators were mainly volunteers made up of Software Engineers, Professionals and Educators from Europe and USA from Morgan Stanley (a London based company) and Lamplighters of Global Code respectively. During the third week, students were put into teams of 4 to work on the following projects:

• Hosting an FM station using the Raspberry Pi • Web Image Analyzer• Weather App

• Voting Machine using the Raspberry Pi• Mentorship Connect Hub• Tourists App• Telegram Bot System• Remote Health Bot System

At the end of the programme, the Head of the Department of Computer Science, Carlos Ankora, thanked Global Code, the organizers and facilitators for bringing the summer program to HTU. Also, he expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Management of Ho Technical University and the Dean of Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Ms. Paulina Adzoyi, for the support given to host the programme.The students from the Department of Computer Science who participated in the programme were appreciative of the experience gained and the knowledge and skills acquired during the three weeks.

HTU GETS FULL COMPLEMENTS OF KEY MANAGEMENT OFFICERS

The Governing Council of Ho Technical University has appointed new key Management Officers to

support the Vice-Chancellor in running the affairs of the University. In effect, the University now has the full complement for all positions that, hitherto, were vacant.The Officers include:

• Mr. Edward K. Ayimey - Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor

• Dr. Christopher K. Amehoe - Registrar• Mr. Augustine Kwame Owusu - Director of

Finance• Mrs. Justina Delali Tsagli- Anormanyo - Director

of Internal Audit• Mr. Nicholas K. Awagah- Director of Works and

Physical Development

Prior to the appointment of the new management Officers, the Governing Council had appointed Professor Ben Quarshie Honyenuga , Associate Professor of Management from the Department of Management Sciences of the HTU Business School, as Vice Chancellor.Professor Ben Honyenuga’s Investiture as Vice Chancellor of the University is scheduled for October 12, 2019.

NEW SRC EXECUTIVES FOR 2019/2020 ACADEMIC YEAR UNDERGO TRAINING

An orientation has been held for the leadership of the Students Representative Council for the

2019/2020 academic year. The 2 day programme was held at the Conference Room of the Graduate School of the University. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ben Honyenuga, encouraged the SRC Executives to clearly establish their vision and mission to serve as a guide throughout their tenure. Also, he encouraged them to align their programmes to those of the University. He also shared with the students his focus on sanitation and asked the leadership to support Management’s effort at ensuring better sanitation on campus especially at the Asogli Block and the Auditorium.Prof. Honyenuga admonished the students to be transparent in their dealings and follow the structures for communication in the University. The Registrar, Dr. Christopher Amehoe, took the students through the University’s administrative processes and Ethics in Administration. Another topic treated was Financial Management and Remittances by Mr. Frank Kweku of the Finance Directorate. Other presentations

were in the areas of Student Affairs, Communication and Public Speaking. The SRC President expressed appreciation to the Dean of Students’ Office for organizing the orientation programme, which has impacted the participants to start their administration from an informed point of view on a number of relevant issues.

The Maiden Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities and Polytechnics held at Ho Technical University

from 9th to 10th September, 2019, was a great success. It attracted over 200 participants from all Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Ghana as well as researchers and presenters from Germany, Australia, Nigeria.The Special Guest of Honour was the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo. The Deputy Minister of Education in Charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Gifty Twum Ampofo and the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Johnson Avulete also graced the opening ceremony of the Conference.There were exhibition of research outcomes, innovations, practical works in form of machinery, art works and products from all Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Ghana.

The theme for the conference was: Positioning Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for Employability and Sustainable Development.The G.M. Afeti Auditorium of the Ho Technical University was filled to capacity as stakeholders of TVET, Political leaders, Lecturers and students gathered for this groundbreaking milestone Conference.At the opening ceremony, the Council Chairman, Prof. Emmanuel James Flolu, indicated that the Conference was in fulfilment of the fundamental aims of the Technical Universities. He intimated it was, also, in direct conformity with Government’s agenda and efforts to give real meaning to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as well as research and innovation in the Technical Universities.The Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo, underscored the essence of Technical and Vocational Education and Training and the fact that reforms of the sector are inevitable because of its relevance to the overall development of any nation. “Any nation that looks down on plumbing because it is a modest

career but glorifies shoddy philosophy because it is an exalted profession will soon realize that neither its pipes nor theories will hold water,” he stressed. The Senior Minister said, Government has been working seriously on restructuring the TVET system in Ghana in order to trigger rapid transformation in the educational sector. As part of this transformative agenda, the over 280 TVET institutions which are scattered across 20 ministries , Departments and Agencies would be put under one umbrella to solve issues of poor coordination, standardization and harmonization.He admonished Technical Universities not to deviate from their core mandate. “Do not become what you are not,” Yaw Osafo Marfo reiterated. The Minister, who graced the opening ceremony of the conference, sat through all the keynote presentations. Again, the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo, presented copies of the Ghana Beyond Aid policy document to Vice-Chancellors of the Technical Universities and Rectors of Polytechnics. He urged participants to tailor some of the discussions in a manner that will suggest some measures to make Ghana go beyond Aid.

CONTINUATION OF VC’S BRIEFMs. Gifty Twum Ampofo and the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Johnson Avulete. I wish to thank the Chairman and members of the Conference Planning Committee for their selfless contribution to making the Conference an enviable one. Management is pleased with the manner the Conference was organized in the mist of challenges before and during the event. I therefore wish to use this opportunity to admonish all staff to continue to support Management in our forward match to becoming a reputable Technical University contributing actively to national and international development.The period under review also saw yet another feat chalked by students of the University. Miss Evelyn Benyiwaa Yankson who represented the University at the 4th American Chicken Cooking Competition held in Accra was adjudged the overall winner of the competition. This has once again proven that Ho Technical University is the reference point in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry. I congratulate staff and students of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management for making the University proud. We are pleased to have Mr. Edward Kwame Ayimey appointed by the Governing Council of the University as the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor. In addition to that the University Governing Council appointed new key Management Officers to complement the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor in steering the affairs of the University. With this team of experts, I assure you all that we will work assiduously to put the University in the limelight. I thank the Chairman and members of Council for taking steps to complete the appointment of key Management Officers.I reassure staff, students and other stakeholders of the University community of my resolve to make this great institution the best among the best universities in the country and across the globe. I entreat everyone to take his/her assigned responsibilities seriously so that we can achieve our goals as a University.
