Surviving The Professional Program
Tips for Balancing The Demands Ahead
Lakehead University
Whenever possible, we ask our students to consider the following:
Significantly reduce or remove any part‐time employment while completing the Professional Program, so you can focus on the
demands of the program. (Pursue bursary and grant opportunities through Student Awards & Financial Aid to assist with financial
need).
Prepare a “Plan B”
for any daycare or transportation need that may arise while completing the Professional Program.

In order to meet your professional commitments in this program, we request
that you do not book any trips or personal events during the 2 academic terms or
during either placement periods.

as recognition of your learning, and a mark (pass/fail) will appear on your non‐
credit transcript.
Teaching Placement Board Options YEAR 1 of 2 Year B. Ed Program
Lakehead University
All students in Year 1 of our 2 Year Consecutive B.Ed program MUST complete both of their Year 1 placements LOCALLY.
This means both your placements in Year 1 will be completed in either: or
in SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD (SCDSB)
SIMCOE MUSKOKA CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD (SMCDSB)
USE OF ADJACENT SCHOOL BOARDS:We will only contact students IF a placement CANNOT be secured in either
of our local school boards, to possibly be placed in an “adjacent”
school
board.
The “adjacent”
school boards we may approach IF it is needed, are:* Trillium Lakelands DSB
* Durham DSB* York Region DSB
Teaching Placement Board Options YEAR 2 of 2 Year B. Ed Program
Lakehead University
In Year 2, ONLY SCHOOL BOARDS THAT APPEAR ON OUR PARTNERSHIP LIST MAY BE
SELECTED FOR PLACEMENT
YOU WILL NOT SELECT YOUR YEAR 2 Placement Preferences until YOU ENTER YEAR 2.

teaching‐practicums/our‐partnership‐boards‐orillia
Important Information About Year 1 & Year 2 Placements:•Both placements can be done in the same board/school providing the 2nd placement is in
a different division.
•Placements must be based on unbiased, professional relationships
to preserve the
integrity of the teacher candidate evaluation process
•Shared placements are made as required
•In either YEAR 1 or YEAR 2 ‐Placements are contractual agreements as arranged by our
partnership
school
boards.
Candidates
do
not
arrange
their
own placements, under any circumstance.
Teaching Placement Board OptionsSpecial Note About The Procurement
of Placement Locations
Teacher candidates or their relatives must not contact boards, individual schools, or teachers to arrange a teaching placement.
Candidates who interfere or who have individuals interfere in the placement procurement process on their behalf, are
subject to sanctions under Article II of Lakehead University’s Code of Student Behaviour and Disciplinary Procedures, 2002.

Teaching Placement Board OptionsSelecting a Catholic School Board For Placement
Lakehead University
When Thinking About Selecting A Catholic School Board for Placement….
•Teacher candidates selecting a Catholic school board for placement should be
eligible for employment with a Catholic board.
Which means, you must be baptized Catholic and comfortable teaching the Stations
of the Cross, leading the Lord’s Prayer and attending religious events as a part of
planned lessons.
•Candidates should be prepared to integrate catholicity throughout the curriculum, if
this is of interest to you, teacher candidates may choose to register for the Education
elective course:
EDUC 3236: Curriculum & Instruction in Religious Education in Roman Catholic Schools of
Ontario
5 Catholic School Boards require
this Pre‐Service EDUC elective
course.Research Catholic Boards of interest, to determine what they require for employment
eligibility.
What Is A Conflict Of Interest? How Do I Report One?
Lakehead University
•Teacher candidates cannot be placed at a school where an immediate
relative currently attends or is currently employed, ie: your children, your
parents, your partner, your partner's children, your siblings. You may still be
placed within that board, just not those particular school(s).
•Should we become aware of a conflict at any time that a candidate did NOT
disclose, the placement request will be cancelled and may need to be
completed the following year.
•If the placement is underway it will be cancelled, or if was already
completed will be deemed unsuccessful.•If you are not certain of the relationship, contact the Faculty.
•The Online Placement Preference Application Form provides a spot to list
your conflict schools, what community the school is in, and what
board each
conflict is a part of.
Being an “Active”
School Board Employee
Lakehead University
If you are a current employee in any capacity with a school board &
you hope to complete 1 or both of your placements with that school board during Professional Year,
you will be required to:
•Pursue a leave of absence from your role for the duration of the school year &;
•Supply the Faculty of Education with proof of the leave being granted, before a placement in that board can be pursued
All letters of proof should be submitted to Julie Howell ([email protected])
Confirmation Of Your Placement Submission
Lakehead University
Viewing Your Online Placement Form Submission As A Contract
•NO requests for changes will be accepted. The only option available to a candidate is a
“deferred”
placement which will make you ineligible to graduate in May of the current
academic year. This option is subject to an application, fees and approval.
•Areas/cities you indicate as a preference for your placement are
geographic markers
ONLY which may or may not be used by the boards in their placement process.
•The University & Partnership Boards reserve the right to arrange
appropriate alternate
placements anywhere within the Board’s geographic boundaries.
•Confirmed placements are professional commitments which will not be changed should
accommodation, transportation, or child care arrangements fail to materialize.
Requested board preferences named in the online submission
are final.
CHOOSE CAREFULLY.
Do NOT submit your form until you have made a final decision
on your school board choice.
Confirmation Of Your Placement Submission
Lakehead University
• Boards that cover a large geographic area and/or who have exceptional
demands on their resources may be unable to honor your requested
communities & may result in you having to find accommodations at your
expense to fulfill your confirmed placement obligation.
• If a board is unable to arrange the requested placement, the teacher
candidate will be contacted and asked to name an alternative partnership
board.
• Research partnership boards geographic boundaries very carefully. Consider
the cost & time implications for your transportation and accommodation.
Visit the Faculty of Education’s website for the complete partnership board
list.

Official Documentation RequiredTips To Remember When Securing Your Police Reference Check (PRC)
with Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)
Lakehead University
Many police services will request a University "letter" from you
stating why the Police
Reference Check (PRC) & Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) are required. You will receive
an email from Julie Howell ([email protected]) to your LU email inbox, containing this
letter that you can print and present when you apply.
PLEASE NOTE: Many police services will not proceed without this letter.
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is your responsibility to inquire about turn around times when you request your
PRC and VSS documentation. Every police service location has varying delivery
times.
Do not leave it until August before classes start, and expect to receive it in time.
Official Documentation RequiredTips To Remember When Securing Your Police Reference Check (PRC)
OUT OF PROVINCE for min of last 12 months? If you have been living out of province, including out of country, please
ensure that you obtain a comparable Police Reference Check
(PRC),
including Vulnerable Sector Screening
(VSS)
documentation, from the
Police Services where you have been residing.
This material may be very useful in helping you obtain the necessary
Ontario documentation without undue delay.
These documents may need to be translated. This is your responsibility.
Once you receive this document, keep it in a very secure place.
NOTE: It is your responsibility to inquire about turn around times when you request your PRC and VSS. Every police
service location has varying delivery times.

Official Documentation RequiredTips To Remember When Securing Your Police Reference Check (PRC)
Identify yourself as a teacher candidate who will be working with vulnerable persons or minors
so a “Vulnerable Sector Screening”
is necessary.
Be sure to bring the POLICE SERVICE LETTER
the LU Faculty of Education has provided to you, when you go to a Police Service location
PRCs from many police jurisdictions are generally only good for 6 months from the date of
issue so you will likely need to process twice during your Professional Program. You will need
to time your applications so that you have valid documents in time for the first day of each
scheduled placement.
It is each B.Ed student’s responsibility to understand the specific documentation requirements
of the school board(s) they have chosen to complete their 2 teaching placements in, in Year 1,
and ensure those requirements have been met prior to the first day of placement.
NOTE: It is your responsibility to inquire about turn around times when you request your PRC and VSS. Every police service
location has varying delivery times.
Official Documentation RequiredTips To Remember When Securing Your Police Reference Check (PRC)
On the first day of each placement, you will be asked to show the principal the ORIGINAL (not
a copy) of a valid Police Record Check (PRC) from all CPIC databases including a Vulnerable
Sector Screening (VSS) of the Pardoned Sex Offender database .
Some OPP Detachments and City Police Services require us to complete a portion of your
application.
•Students should be going to a Local Police Service location or OPP Detachment in the
community of their permanent address to request the documentation. (This reduces wait
times in most cases)
•Remember to bring along the LU Letter and all required ID with you to the Police Service
location
Apply for ALL of this REQUIRED documentation no earlier than June 15th, 2018
‐ prior to
your program entrance. Waiting to apply any date after June 15th will ensure that your
documentation is valid for the duration of your first practicum.
NOTE: It is your responsibility to inquire about turn around times when you request your PRC and VSS. Every police
service location has varying delivery times.
