SEMESTER PROGRAMME
This programme includes a number of half year courses (approximately 17 weeks). Choosing the semester programme equates to one subject - one line on the timetable.
SELECTING SEMESTER SUBJECTS
If a student chooses the semester programme, they must choose two semester options – one to run in the first half of the year and the other in the second half of the year.
Both Year 12 and Year 13 students may take the semester programme. NB: Year 12 Semester options are available to both Year 12 and 13 students. Year 13 Semester options are available only to Year 13 students.
Semester courses may offer Unit Standards and / or Achievement Standards at a range of levels: Level 1, 2 and / or 3.
The semester courses are designed to meet a range of student needs. Semester subjects will be offered subject to: Student numbers Staff availability
Please note: There may be some changes to course content prior to the start of the 2019 school year.

12 BUSINESS STUDIES 12BUS Entry Requirements NCEA Level 1
Course Outline / Key Topics Covered This course provides an opportunity for students to experience the realities of operating a business. Students will learn about market research about a product, and carry out a guided business activity within the school setting.

12 DRIVER EDUCATION 12DRE Entry Requirements Open entry. Course Outline / Key Topics Covered Factors that affect safe driving are investigated. Types of Tasks A series of work books will be used. • Portrayal of women or men in popular cultural
• Peer, family and societal expectations relating to gender
• Body image Assessment 1 Internal Achievement Standards 5 Credits TOTAL CREDITS – 5 credits This Standard also contributes towards Level 1 Literacy – 5 credits An optional external Achievement Standard (5 credits) is also offered. This can count towards a subject endorsement for students who take both Health Related Studies 1 and 2. 12 PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY 1 12PT1
Entry Requirements
• Open entry for students who have achieved their NCEA Level 1 Certificate.
• Students can enter this course having done very little music as this is a predominantly practical course.
• A good attendance record is required due to work being assessed in groups. Course Outline This course focuses on developing the essential skills for the production and performance technology industry. The students will discover the fundamentals of the music industry through both in-school and extra-curricular activities: record labels, music technology, recording. Students will:
• Learn the fundamentals of recording music, and editing the sound.
• Research a New Zealand music topic. Assessment TOTAL CREDITS - 8 credits 2 Internal Achievement Standards 8 credits
• Students attending itinerant music lessons may be offered an optional Achievement Standard (4 credits) through group performance. Fees $20.00 Books for internal assessment

12 PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY 2 12PT2 Entry Requirements
• Open entry for students who have achieved their NCEA Level 1 Certificate and have completed Performance Technology Semester 1. Course Outline This course focuses on developing the essential skills for the production and performance technology industry. The students will discover the fundamentals of the music industry: record labels, music technology, recording and theatrical lighting. Students will:
• Research the development of music technology
• Edit music using MIDI, Garage Band and Sibelius

12 RECREATIONAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION 12RPE Entry Requirements Participation in Year 11 FFL, or by approval of HOF. Course Outline
• Safety and risk management as regards physical activity in the outdoors

• A day trip is a compulsory part of the assessment - approximate cost is $150.00.

12 SOCIAL STUDIES 2 12SSS2 Entry Requirements Open entry. Course Outline The aim of this course is to help students understand how conflicts can arise from different cultural beliefs and ideas and can be addressed in different ways with differing outcomes.

• Conduct a reflective social inquiry e.g. a protest movement such as nuclear free New Zealand
• Understand conflict arising from different cultural beliefs and ideas e.g. conflict between different groups over the use of natural resources in New Zealand society

13 ENGLISH SKILLS 13ESK Entry Requirements 10 credits from Y11 English or with approval from the TIC / HOF. Students must be in Y13 to take this course. Course Outline / Key Topics Covered Students will read and view a range of different texts. They will also study the basics of written communication. This course is designed for Y13 students who did not achieve in 12EST but still wish to take an English course at Y13. NB – This course offers Level 2 credits only. There is scope for flexibility in this course whereby students could complete other standards to suit their individual needs and pace of work. Assessment TOTAL CREDITS – 10 credits 1 Internal Achievement Standard 4 credits 2 Internal Unit Standards 6 credits
• 4 credits count towards University Entrance Literacy (Reading credits)
• 4 credits count towards Level 1 Literacy

13 FITNESS FOR SPORT 1 13FFS1 Entry Requirements Y13 students who have participated in Y12 Recreational Physical Education or by approval of the Faculty Leader. Course Outline / Key Topics Covered
• Development and understanding of standard exercises - resistance training and free standing exercises
• Personal goal setting
• Development of a personal gym based programme
• Plan and apply a fitness training programme
• Instruct and monitor resistance training Assessment TOTAL CREDITS - 8 credits 1 Internal Unit Standard 4 credits 1 Internal Achievement Standard 4 credits
• Students may take both Fitness for Sport 1 and Fitness for Sport 2, but the Achievement Standard is offered in both courses.
• Additional standards may be available to meet individual needs. Subject Progression
• Fitness for Sport 2 in semester 2
• May lead to Diploma in personal Fitness and Training.
Special Conditions of Subject
• Students will need at least two senior PE tops either from 12RPE or purchased new - approximate cost is $45.
• This course will require the use of out of school facilities - the cost is $11.50 per week (no sign up fee is required). This entitles each student to the use of fitness facilities in class as well as outside school hours.
• Transport to and from Evolve Fitness - cost to be advised at the start of the 2019 semester (approximately $50.00 for the semester)
• Students are unable to take both 13 Fitness for Sport and 13 Sport Science.
• Students will attempt the Tough Guy / Girl Challenge secondary schools’ competition (approximate cost of entry and transport - $75.00)

• Determinants of health
• Contemporary ethical issues – Medicinal marijuana, Euthanasia, Vaccinations, Abortions
• International health issues – disease, colonisation and the health of indigenous people Assessments 1 Internal Achievement Standards 4 credits TOTAL CREDITS – 4 credits This Standard also contributes towards Level 1 Literacy – 4 credits An optional external Achievement Standard (5 credits) is also offered.
