Faith and Courage: Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego FHE Lesson by Donna Cummings, Digitized and adapted by Lara Goold Materials needed: Scriptures, paper, pencil, coloring utensils, scissors, computer (to watch the videos, if desired) Purpose: This lesson is meant to teach the themes of faith and courage through the examples of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Preparation: Read Daniel 3 to re-familiarize yourself with the story, so that you can retell it easily. Scripture: “…Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord. 1 Chronicles 28:20 Opening song(s) and prayer: “Do What is Right,” Hymns, page 237 “Choose the Right Way,” Children’s Songbook, page 160 Lesson: Scripture Story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego : Using the flannel board figures, tell the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Emphasize that they had faith in their Father in Heaven, enough faith that they had the courage to obey his commandments even when it could cost them their lives. Discuss : 1. How did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego show faith and courage? 2. If the Lord had not saved them, do you think that their faith would have been misplaced? 3. How can we show faith and courage in our own lives? (You can direct this answer toward any challenges you family might be facing currently.) 4. Can you think of other scripture heroes that risked their lives to do what is right? (Daniel, Abinadi, Paul, Joseph Smith, the pioneers, etc) Some of these people were spared and some of them died for the cause, but all of them had great faith and courage. We may not have to risk our lives, but we must show faith and courage every day when we choose to follow the Lord instead of Satan.) Real Life Application: Give each child a sheet a paper and a pencil, and ask them to write down (or draw a picture of) at least three situations in which they might find themselves where they would have to be courageous in order to remain obedient to God. Have each child share one of their ideas. Summary: Hopefully we will never be faced with a life or death situation like that of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. However, during our life we will find ourselves in many situations that if we give in to the pressure or turn our backs on doing what it right, it could be very damaging to us or to others. It takes courage to stand up for truth and righteousness, but we can do it

because God will always be there to help, just as he was there to help Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. See Enrichment Ideas below for some fun activities that correspond with the lesson. Bear Testimony of the blessings that come from being courageous and standing up for truth and righteousness.

Closing song: “Dare to Do Right,” Children’s Songbook, page 158 “Redeemer of Israel,” Hymns, page 6

Closing Prayer:

Refreshments: See below for a yummy recipe Enrichment: Based on the ages and attention spans of your children, choose one or more of the following enrichment activities to enhance the message of the lesson. Enrichment activities do not necessarily need to be completed on the same night as the lesson. We often use them as reinforcement/reminders during the week.

Enrichment ideas: Video(s): If desired, show one of the video clips I’ve spotlighted on the blogpost on http://thegoldenseven.blogspot.com: One simply retells the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego The second is a fun song about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (lyrics are included below) that you can dance to The third is a humorous retelling of the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego using Star Wars Lego figures.

Activity sheets (word search and maze): Print off enough copies of the word find and maze so that everyone can have their own copy. Use them as a Sunday activity reinforcing the lesson you had the week before, or just have them complete them sometime during the week. Coloring/Craft Activity: Color, cut out, and thread the “runner” through the furnace. See activity for more specific directions.

The original lesson I received came with a cassette tape (yes, I’m that old) with the BYU Men’s Chorus singing this song. It was fun and upbeat and I really wanted a way to include it here, but could not find it anywhere online. I found the other version of it (included in the videos on the blog) and thought I’d throw in the lyrics just for fun so you can sing along!
