LAS MADRINAS ALTAR SOCIETY

Our next Las Madrinas Meeting will be June 5, at 1:00 p.m. at the Olive Garden (1884 Marron Rd. #L, Carlsbad, CA 92008(760) 434-1016.) Please contact Marilyn Gilliland for information and reservations at 760-967-6397.

We are moving along nicely with workshops for our Eucha-ristic Ministers and Lectors at the parish. On May 12 there was a second Lector’s Workshop from 9:00 – 12:00, which ended with lunch in the Parish Dining Room at 12:30. Minis-ters receive certificates of commissioning inaugurating their ministry for a three year period at the conclusion of the work-shops. Those who have not been able to come on Saturday will be accommodated on an evening with a short workshop and commissioning ceremony. All Lectors and Eucharistic Min-isters must attend one session and receive their certificate. The purpose of the workshop is to give attention to these vital ministries and to keep them in good repair. We have the op-portunity to pray together also and to discuss issues of mutual concern regarding the exercise of our ministries in the faith community of the parish. Workshops will continue in June for Hispanic Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors so keep an eye out for the dates. Thank you to Las Madrinas Altar Society for providing a wonderful lunch and for looking after us so well at these events. First Holy Communion is just around the corner and over one hundred and forty children will receive the sacrament in our parish this year on Saturday, May 19 at 11:00 (English) and at 2:00 (Spanish). Reconciliation/First Confession for the children took place in the Serra Center on Wednesday 9 and was wonderful. Thank you to the Friars from the Mission who came and helped with confession. Please keep the children and their parents in your prayers as we prepare for this beau-tiful event at the parish. Youth Ministry was busy at the beach last weekend picking up trash and earning some money for its activities at the par-ish, especially for the Confirmation Retreat in May at the Mis-sion. We don’t have much money in these lean times so con-gratulations to our youth who got out there and made it hap-pen! As always, we are indebted to the Samoan Community and particularly to the Samoan youth for their generosity and enthusiasm. They sponsored the events at the beach last weekend. And speaking of youth – World Youth Day (WYD) will be held in Rio de Janeiro next July and we are going!! Woohoo!! Ahem…okay, calm down. We definitely want to go, and there-fore we will be fund-raising like mad after June to bring as many of our young men and women from the parish as possi-ble. For every ten we get to bring one free, so please be gen-erous in helping us to accomplish our mission and head to Brazil to meet the Pope and celebrate our faith with young Catholics from all over the world. There will be more about this at a later date in the Parish Bulletin. Finally, the Men’s Discernment Group meets at the Mis-sion on Wednesday 23, at 7:00 pm for food, faith -sharing and prayer. If you want to know more call me at 760-547-0723. And finally, finally…if you would enjoy a good read, get your hands on “Falling Upward” by Richard Rohr, OFM. I’m not plugging his book because he is a Franciscan Friar but because it is a marvelous book about faith and our relationship with God as we move into the second half of life. If you are over forty, this is for you.

Wishing you joy and peace in the week ahead! ~~Fr. Adrian.

MOTHER’S DAY PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank you for Your special gift of mothers and for the example of Your

unconditional love they share with their children.

Lord, today we pray You will protect and guide mothers everywhere, that you will grant them

Your wisdom in loving and teaching their children.

Today, may children everywhere remember the warm caresses and whispers in the night,

the tears dried, band-aids, the hugs, kisses and the laughter.

Thank you for the mothers who played with us, taught us, nurtured us, listened to us,

tried to understand us and who prayed for us.

Today, may we remember Mom’s beauty when we were young and her loveliness discovered as we aged.

Lord, today draw especially close to mothers who are alone, for whatever reason

and grant them Your comfort, Your pleasure, Your peace.

And for children who are alone, because of distance, death or indifference,

may good memories flood their minds.

And if they’re not good memories, may forgiveness burst forth from their hearts

and revive in them long lost joy.

Lord, thank you particularly for phone calls today and for a shared “I Love You.”

Today, as we honor, celebrate, or simply reflect on the woman who raised us

we thank You, Lord for life and for mom! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

WE INVITE YOU TO SERVE

During the past few weeks we have explored and prayed about how we have and can use our God-given gifts. As we get involved in our parish life we celebrate our giftedness and we take time to reflect on the power of our hands as those of Jesus Christ. Being aware of our gifts is not enough. We must com-mit ourselves to action! As committed members of our parish, we take up Jesus’ mandate to wash the feet of others as He washed the feet of His disciples. Jesus tells us, “I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” (John 13:15) As we continue to pray and consider our service to our Lord and to our parish, we become conscious of how we use our talents in service of others and how we can also share a portion of our financial gifts to further the mission and ministry of Jesus. As we evaluate our efforts we often realize that it is time to put our faith into action! By doing so, we try to take-a-step to help build the Body of Christ. We receive the Body of Christ to become the Body of Christ as stewards in to-day’s world. We are the hands of Christ – yours are the hands of Christ. Using St. Teresa of Avila’s prayer as a guide, we ask you to give of your God-given gifts of time and talent to our parish family. We need you! Remem-ber, you are the Hands of Christ!

Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet, on earth but yours.

Yours are the eyes through which He looks compassion on this world.

Yours are the feet with which He blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, your s are the feet. Yours are the eyes, you are His body.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Help Wanted for Mission Retreat Center: Hosts for Private Retreats

Our genuine Franciscan hospitality is at the heart of our Private Retreat ministry and we need help from married cou-ples who are able to volunteer to host our guests while they are here. Hosting means staying at the center in a private room, having meals here, and in general making sure the retreatant has someone to go to in case of any need some-one has. A Private Retreat is generally silent or with little talk-ing. The retreatant come to “take time to pray, reflect and renew” their weary souls. Hosting them is truly an act of Franciscan love and compassion. Call Pat Julian, Director of Retreat and Programs, 760.757.3659 x123/[email protected]

“If you want to live life free...” Friday, June 15, 2012- 5:30pm-8:30pm With Monsignor Dennis Mikulanis, STD

Francesco Bernardone (St. Francis of Assisi) was a dreamer! He had great vision and grand plans for his future, but God had other ideas. After hiding from God for a long time Francesco finally gave up and did what God wanted him to do. “If you want to live life free” will briefly explore the long-ings every person has for an intimate encounter with God and how to free ourselves from worldy pursuits in order to find it. The Evening Twilight Retreat begins at 5:30 pm with Mass in the Old Mission Church followed by dinner and the presen-tation.

Padre Adrian Peelo, ofm

(Juan 13:15).
