Westfield Adult School Mission StatementThe Westfield Adult School is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality education and enrichment opportunities both in and out of the classroom. Our talented faculty includes professionals in business, the arts and academics. Through the combined dedication and efforts of the faculty and the volunteer Board of Trustees, The Westfield Adult School is committed to serving as a vital educational/enrichment resource to Westfield and the surrounding communities.

Bring your own sewing machine and sewing basket sup-plies (list will be provided before the first class).  You will learn  to manage the gauges and get confident on your sewing machine. Students will also learn how to sew seams, zippers, buttons, button holes, collars, straight and curved seams, etc. Hem stitching by hand will also be taught. Have your questions about sewing with your machine answered in this class. Fabric and thread will be supplied, or if you prefer you may bring your own. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain8 Mondays, 9/26–11/21, $92Room 255Class # 21: 7:00–8:30pmThis course is about learning to draw, gaining confidence, and having fun doing it. Expand your horizons and learn to draw the way you never imagined! In this introductory course, learn to draw more realistically and with more confidence. Using exercises based on the book, as well as working with simple still lifes, you will learn to use line (contour draw-ing), shading, composition, and design with a strong emphasis on learning to draw what you “see”. You will learn new methods to develop your own unique style, while achieving correct proportion and space. No experience neces-sary. However if you have a sample of your previous work, please bring it to the first class. Book for the class: The NEW Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. New - Glassblowing1 Saturday, 10/8, $85GlassRoots StudioClass # 25: 10:00am–1:00pmHave you always wanted to try the ancient art of glassblowing? At this one day workshop taught by glass artists, students will learn basic techniques for controlling and shaping molten glass, enabling students to take home their own creations in glass. Class size is limited to 6 to allow for individual attention and maxi-mum access to equipment. GlassRoots Studio (close to the Newark Museum and the Newark Library) is located in the Halsey Arts Village at 10 Bleeker Street in Newark. Students must be 14 years old or older. New - Mixed Media Workshop3 Thursdays, 11/3–11/17, $105Lisa’s Studio in WatchungClass # 15: 7:00–9:00pmThis workshop will be a fun exploration in media. You will begin with a wide variety of textured papers, texture paint and pieces to add to a flat surface. Then you will add color by using acrylics and watercolors. The final touches will be beads or ribbons to highlight your work of art. This is a great workshop to revive your artistic talents and bring to life a scene. Students will learn to look at the world in shapes and textures, colors and shadows while creating a beautiful piece of art. Materials fee of $10 will be due to Lisa at the first class. New - Watercolor Workshop for Beginners3 Thursdays, 9/29–10/13, $105Lisa’s Studio in WatchungClass # 16: 7:00–9:00pmWatercolors are a great media and have some particular qualities that make them fun to work with.  Learn how to play with this media and also how to control it with tricks and tech-niques that will help you paint the pictures you want. Each class is unique and explores different methods. We might use collage, torn paper, fabric, found object, beads, etc. added to your watercolor or we might experience different techniques that create special effects: salt, resist, scratching, texturing, wet on wet, dry brush and more. Simply bring watercolor paper (medium priced).  Paints, brushes, and techniques will be supplied. This workshop is structured for the beginners and will help ease you into this wonderful media.  Materials fee of $10 will be due to Lisa at the first class. Beginners through experienced quilters can choose from several variations of the Irish Chain. At home, students will need a sewing machine, iron, and a rotary cutter and board (beginners will be taught rotary cutting).  At the first class students will be given directions and a supply list. After taking this class you will be able to cre-ate simple floral arrangements and eliminate the need for a trip to the florist. The wreath will be perfect to use as a home decoration or you can give it as a Thanksgiving or holiday gift! Students will design and create their wreath using an assortment of flowers including hydrangea, dalias, berries, various leaves and accents. Some islands to be visited: Muckle Flugga, Unst, Lewis & Harris, Eigg, Barra, Isle of Man, Guernsey, Sark and the Scilly Isles. Some islands are rugged and are not well inhabited, others are picture postcard scenery and still others have large towns and are tax havens for the rich. For many people, Agatha Christie may be the Queen of Crime Fiction with her many murder mysteries such as “Death On The Nile” and “Murder On The Orient Express.” Her life story was filmed on location in her native England. We will also learn all about the Bronte sisters, Emily, Anne and Charlotte who wrote such novels as “Jane Eyre,” “Wuthering Heights,” and “Agnes Grey.” Their life stories were also filmed on location in rural England and its lovely countryside.

New Orleans, A City Tour plus a Live Jazz Performance1 Monday, 10/17, $18Room 140Class # 160: 7:00–9:15pmWe start off with a detailed look at New Orleans and all of its sights from Bourbon Street to Canal Street, to the French Quarter...a very diversified and interesting city. Cooking Thanksgiving and Chanukah Dinners with French Chef, Jacques Pepin (on DVD)1 Monday, 11/7, $10Room 140Class # 162: 7:00–9:15pmJacques is fond of saying that Thanksgiving is his favorite holiday. After all, it’s the one holi-day devoted entirely to cooking and eating. After our coffee break, celebrate the Jewish “Festival of Lights” with a light, French-inspired Chanukah dinner menu. Printed recipes will be given for both dinners.

Cruising The Danube River with a Side Trip to Prague1 Monday, 11/14, $10Room 140Class # 163: 7:00–9:15pmWe start our cruise in the German city of Passau at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz, and Danube Rivers. We stop at the city of Linz, Austria  known for its famous Linzer Torte. On to the monastery at Melk, the Wachau region known for its wine growing and towns like Durnstein and Krems. Next is  Vienna with all of its sights and on to Bratislava, the capitol of Slovakia. We then stop in Esztergom, Hungary,  viewing magnificent St. Stephen’s Cathedral and then on to Budapest on the Danube seeing all of its sights. This is where our cruise terminates. We will also have a look at Prague, the capitol of the Czech Republic and a few side trips to some of its castles, Karlstejn and Konopiste.

California Wine Country and San Francisco1 Monday, 11/21, $10Room 140Class # 164: 7:00–9:15pmTaste the flavor of California’s premium wine regions from Sonoma to Carmel Valley. Watch the harvest and learn how wine is made, visit the wineries and meet the vintners. Discover the colorful history of early California, sweep-ing views of the Napa Valley from a hot air balloon, relax in a mud bath at a Calistoga Spa, observe a food and wine demonstration at Beringer’s School for American chefs and more. After a short break, actress Jill St. John will take us on a detailed tour of San Francisco, the city by the bay, and then off to Muir Woods and its fabulous redwood trees. You definitely will “leave your heart in San Francisco.”

Travel to faraway places and learn about other cultures, food and art. These classes include a DVD presentation and are guided by Mike Dutko, 40 Years in the travel business. Refreshments will be served at each class.

A Day at West Point1 Tuesday, 10/11, $128Class # 170Come join us for a tour of the United States Military Academy, West Point. The tour includes the Cadet Chapel, which features stained-glass windows and one of the largest church organs in the world, and Trophy Point, a repository of war relics dating from the American Revolution. We’ll also visit the West Point Museum, the largest and oldest military museum in North America. There is so much to see! Photo ID required. A wonderful buffet lunch will be served at the Hotel Thayer, a historic landmark building on a bluff overlook-ing the Hudson. The Thayer Hotel has played host to many Presidents and generals. End the day with a tour and wine tasting at the Brotherhood Winery, the oldest winery in the United States with the first commercial vintage produced in 1839. A great way to end the day! Departure from A&P Fresh Parking Lot (1060 Raritan Rd., Clark) at 8:30am with a return at approximately 6:15pm.

United Nations Headquarters for the Day1 Monday, 10/17, $128Class # 171Explore United Nations Headquarters and get a behind-the-scenes view of the Organization at work. On a guided tour, learn about its history, structure, composition and design of the buildings. See art works, such as a rep-lica of the Royal Thai barge, which have been donated; view an exhibit on disarmament which includes remnants from the nuclear explosions in Nagasaki and Hiroshima; visit the General Assembly hall, the largest meeting room, where the 192 members meet to discuss global issues — and much, much more. After a grand buffet in the Delegates Dining Room, we’ll be treated to a private briefing by a Secretariat official on Current Events Affecting the UN. Photo ID required. In the Delegates Dining Room, jackets for men are required and no jeans nor sneakers are allowed. From Wall Street to Brooklyn1 Thursday, 11/3, $138Class # 174The Museum of American Finance is the nation’s only independent public museum dedicated to celebrating the spirit of entrepre-neurship and the democratic free market tradi-tion that has made New York City the financial capital of the world. You’ll learn about our currency, hear the story of banking in America, trace the development of the current financial crisis — and much more. After lunch at the Gotham, one of the city’s finest restaurants, tour the Brooklyn Museum’s special exhibi-tion: “Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties”. Artists of the Jazz Age struggled to express the experience of a dramatically remade modern world, demonstrating their faith in the potentiality of youth and in the sustaining value of beauty. The 140 works are by 68 artists, sculptors, and photographers including Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Alfred Stieglitz. The Best of Newark1 Wednesday, 11/16, $112Class # 175Join us once again with our private guide, Liz Del Tufo, for a day filled with surprises. We’ll first visit the Newark Police Museum, a little gem chronicling the history of the third oldest police department in the country. Our guide is a retired policeman, the curator of an out-standing collection of police memorabilia. On to one of Newark’s architectural gems, the First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church. Built in 1888, financed by Thomas Peddie and designed by William Halsey Wood, it is an incredible exam-ple of Romanesque/Byzantine architecture with rare Tiffany windows. After lunch at the Spanish Manor, a local favorite, we’ll tour the former William Clark Mansion, now the North Ward Center. The mansion was built in 1876 for the founder of the Coats and Clark Thread Company. Our last stop will be the Newark Museum to see “Patchwork from Folk Art to Fine Art”. The show traces the evolution of quilts, both stylistically and historically. Spend this fabulous day with us! Boston Pops at NJPAC1 Sunday, 12/4, $190Class # 176Kick off the holiday season in high style with the Boston Pops, America’s happiest and most beloved musical ensemble. Conductor Keith Lockhart returns to lead the orchestra in its traditional holiday program, drawn from a repertoire that includes Christmas classics, Broadway tunes, and American standards. “For over a century, the Boston Pops has been one of the things that defines our American experi-ence”, says The Boston Globe. REGISTRATION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLYThe Westfield Adult School is a non-profit, independent, voluntary community orga-nization. No taxpayer money is used. Building facilities are rented from the Westfield Board of Education and administrative expenses such as salaries, insurance premiums, printing and mailing costs are borne by tuition fees, advertisements, and donations.

1. Make checks payable to: WESTFIELD ADULT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $5 per person, per semester (one time only). Mail form and checks to:

2. NO CONFIRMATIONS ARE SENT. You will be notified if a course is filled or can-celled and your fee will be returned to you. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment.

3. REFUND POLICY: Refund requests for classes must be received by the Friday before the class starts. Full tuition will be refunded minus a $10 administrative fee. No refunds for one night classes. Day trip reservations are not refundable, but may be transferable if the trip has a waiting list. Overnight trip reservations are refundable up to 14 days prior to departure, less an administrative fee of $10 plus charges for any expenses incurred.

4. Senior Citizens: Courses noted by a ♥ are offered at a discounted senior rate to students age 65 and over.

5. Fees must be paid in full at the time your registration is received.6. Any individual, regardless of residence, may register.7. Classes are held on Monday nights at Westfield High School, unless spe-

cifically noted otherwise. Dates and duration of classes are shown after the course title. There will be no classes held at Westfield High School on Monday, October 10 due to the Columbus Day Holiday.

8. The telephone number for the Adult School office is (908) 232-4050. Please do not call Westfield High School for information regarding the Adult School, except on Monday evenings when the Adult School is in session.

9. On Monday nights, when the Adult School is in session, the main office of Westfield High School is open from 6:00–9:30 p.m., phone (908) 789-4500.
