Here is the essential guide to philosophy, an authoritative yet fun reference

book and timeline on the compilation of human knowledge. Both art

and science attempt answers to the big questions—what is truth, how to be

good, and where did we come from?—but philosophy is the interpreter we

use to verify it all. We need it to make sense of the simplest math and the most

esoteric poetry and it has even created a science of information itself. We begin

our journey at the boundary of myth and reason and along the way we visit the

thoughts of the most high-fl ying of minds; Socrates, Descartes, Kant and others,

who could see that nothing, not ever-changing words, limitless numbers, or

mystical visions, were beyond examination. And we shall see that philosophy, far

from being the work of dead geniuses, is today at the heart of our battle to make

sense of the quantum Universe.

u Contains 100 chronological articles that tell the story of philosophy through

the inspirations of great thinkers.

u Includes summaries of the fi elds of philosophy, setting out the basics in

jargon-busting and lighthearted text.

u The life stories behind the great philosophers give further insight to their

work.

u Philosophy embraces the paradox, and we present the most mind-boggling

conundrums the last 3,000 years has to off er.

u 100 Ponderables also contains a 12-page Timeline History of Philosophy.

The elementsAn Illustrated History of the PeriodicTableTom Jackson

Here is the essential guide to the Periodic Table, an

authoritative reference book and timeline with at-a-glance

information for every element. The Periodic Table, set out

by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869, is the result of centuries of

accumulated knowledge. It is a powerful yet elegant tool that

opens a window onto the very stuff of nature—stars, rocks,

life, and more—and it shows us the way to make ever smarter

technologies. One hundred ponderables, the puzzles solved

and inspirations reached, tell the story of how the Periodic

Table came to be. The journey begins just as the fi rst cities are

forming and follows the contributions made by philosophers,

alchemists, industrialists, and great scientists. It ends with

the synthesis of superheavy elements never seen before on

Earth—and an understanding of how the universe really works.

u 100 milestone facts reveal the chronological history of

how the weighty problems in the world of chemistry led

to great discoveries.

u Authoritative but lively text, and lavish illustrations set

out the reasoning behind the Periodic Table, bringing the

elements into clear focus.

u Includes a removable fold-out concertina neatly housed

at the back of the book, with a 12-page Timeline History

of the Periodic Table and a 12-page Chart of Elements in

Atomic Order.

PhysicsAn Illustrated History of the Foundations of ScienceTom Jackson

Here is the essential guide to physics, an authoritative

reference book and timeline that examines the foundations

upon which all scientifi c knowledge rests. Without physics,

everything else—from astronomy to zoology—would be a

meaningless conjecture.

Follow physics through the ages as great scientists, such as

Thales, Galileo, Feynman, and many others, gradually unpick

the fabric of the universe to reveal an array of fundamental

forces, intangible particles, and indestructible energy. Today,

physics discoveries make headline news as we confi rm the

fresh mysteries of the Higgs boson, supersymmetry, and dark

energy.

u Authoritative text, exciting imagery, and helpful diagrams

accompany each of the steps along the way.

u Biographies of great physicists and a chart of the Standard

Model particles boosts the contents for all readers.

u A simple physics guide draws together current

understanding to set out the basics of the science.

The UniverseAn Illustrated History of AstronomyTom Jackson

Here is the essential guide to astronomy, an authoritative

reference book and timeline that traces how, over many

centuries, great minds have fi gured out where we and our

planet fi t in the great expanse of the Universe. Since time

immemorial people have looked out into the night sky and

brought back knowledge of how the Universe works. Gradually

astronomers have learned how it all began—in a Big Bang—and

are now faced with a variety of possible endings for space as

we know it. The history of astronomy is as long as civilization

itself. The megalithic cultures of Stonehenge and Carnac sought

to anchor themselves to the workings of the cosmos, and as

today’s astronomers search for alien planets and seek out dark

matter, perhaps we are just the same.

u 100 milestone facts follow the steps by scientists, ancient

and modern, to build up a picture of the Universe, stars,

and planets.

u Authoritative text, stunning astronomical imagery, and

explanatory illustrations set out the way we have pushed

back the boundaries of our knowledge to reveal how the

Universe formed.

u Includes a removable fold-out concertina neatly housed

at the back of the book, with a 12-page Timeline History of

the Universe and a 12-page Star Chart of the Night Sky for

mathematics An Illustrated History of numbersEditor: Tom Jackson

Here is the essential guide to mathematics, an authoritative

reference book and timeline that explores the work of history’s

greatest mathematicians. These include the teasing genius

of Pierre de Fermat, who said he knew the answers but rarely

gave them up; the helpful guidance of Fibonacci, whose

13th-century compendium for bookkeepers proved to be

a valuable tool for the most high-minded mathematicians;

and the fractal pattern discovered by Wacław Sierpinski now

used to plan the route a mailman takes. With a glimpse of the

abstract landscapes of infi nite numbers and multi-dimensional

shapes that these incredible minds explore, we can begin to

get beyond school-day sums and understand the true power

of mathematics.

u 100 milestone facts reveal the greatest mathematical

breakthroughs through the eyes of the people who made

them.

u Authoritative text, historical imagery, and helpful diagrams

are combined with stories and everyday examples to

make the complex mathematics accessible to everyone.

u Includes a removable fold-out concertina neatly housed

at the back of the book, with a 12-page Timeline History of

Mathematics and 12 pages of Mathematical Enigmas.

The Poor man’s Picture GalleryStereoscopy versus Paintings in the victorian eraDenis Pellerin and Brian May

New Tit les from London Stereoscopic Company

This astonishing set of stereocards from Brian May’s

collection reconstructs 14 well-known Victorian works

in Tate Britain using real actors and staged scenes. The

stereos are contemporary with the paintings, and their

existence was hitherto unknown outside the circle of

specialist collectors of Victoriana. They were produced

for commercial reasons—the advent of a new painting

by a great artist was big news, but most people were not able to access and

enjoy the new works of art. Entrepreneurial

photographers of the day reconstructed the

scenes, photographed them, and sold the

stereocards for profi t. In addition to their

beauty, they shed light on the story of these

famous paintings, and reveal a great deal about

the society of the time.

The format is to show the painting itself,

followed by the stereocard versions of that

painting with explanatory text. The artists

include Landseer, Maclise, Wallis, Millais,

Calderon, Collinson, Frith, Egley, Collins, Leslie,

Haydon, and the photographers were the

most distinguished of that time. The book

accompanies an exhibition of these cards

which will be held at the Tate from October

2014 on.

DiableriesStereoscopic Adventures in HellBrian May, Denis Pellerin, and Paula Fleming

A devilish 1860s sensation–fi nally

unleashed on the 21st century! In France,

around 1860, from the loins of a traditional

national fascination with all things diabolical, was born

a new sensation: a series of visionary dioramas depicting life

in a strange parallel universe called ENFER—Hell—communicated to an eager

audience by means of stereoscopic cards, to be viewed in the stereoscopes which

had already become popular in the 1850s. This 3-D phenomenon, which fascinated

a nation for 40 years, is now yours to share. This book, the fruit of half a lifetime’s

study by three impassioned authors, brings every one of the published Diableries

into the 21st century for the very fi rst time. Some of them are so rare that at the

time of writing there is no known complete collection of the originals of these

A village Lost and FoundAn annotated tour of the 1850s series of stereo photographs‘Scenes in Our Village’ by t r williamsBrian May and Elena Vidal

Relaunched by London Stereoscopic Company

Now with a new home under the creative wing of the team who originally

wrote and produced the book in 2008, A Village Lost and Found has joined

the imaginative program of 3-D publishing that is the mission of Brian May’s

new London Stereoscopic Company (LSC). Relaunched, alongside the LSC’s

new titles for Fall 2014, A Village Lost and Found received fabulous reviews, and is

available to a new market as Shelter Harbor’s team goes large with it across the

USA. This book is the perfect antidote to the stress of life in the 21st Century.

It portrays the idyll of life in an 1850s English village, “far from the sound of the

train’s whistle”. The identity of the village was lost to the world for 150 years, and

only by a miracle does this magical set of stereoscopic views survive, brought

together for the very first time by Brian May and his co-author, photohistorian

Elena Vidal. Their research is amazingly in-depth, but the book is utterly

readable, and the pictures leap into glorious 3-D, viewed in the new focussing

stereoscope which May has designed and produced to bring the stereos to life,

and then fold neatly into the slip-case of the book.

The book gives an extraordinary insight into everyday village life at the time: with

a woman at her spinning wheel, the blacksmith outside his smithy, three men at

the grindstone sharpening a tool, the villagers in the fi elds, bringing in the harvest

as well as often taking time to enjoy a good gossip. In every case the original verse

which accompanied the view is reproduced.

In addition, May and Vidal have researched

and annotated all the views, revealing

another layer of meaning by exploring the

history of these real characters, this idyllic

village and its links with the present day.

The result is a powerfully atmospheric and

touching set of photographs. A village Lost and Found brings master pioneering

stereographer T. R. Williams’s passionate

life work Scenes in Our Village to a new

audience—in glorious 3-D—as never before.

Starmus50 Years of man in SpaceGarik Israelian and Brian MayForeword by Stephen Hawking

Never before has such an ambitious series of talks, articles, and recollections

been assembled to celebrate the human exploration of space. It is the result

of the unique Starmus meeting in 2011 on Tenerife, where the legendary Russian

and American pioneers of the space age met up for the fi rst time to share the

moments that electrifi ed the human race.

Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Bill Anders, Yuri Baturin, Charlie Duke, Victor Gorbatko,

Alexei Leonov, Jim Lovell, Claude Nicollier, and Sergei Zhukov tell their personal

stories about the fi rst space walk, the lunar landing, the heroic recovery of Apollo

13, the repair of the Hubble Space Telescope, and much more.

Our discovery of the Universe, our place

within it, and the meaning of life on Earth

also forged dramatic moments at Starmus

through the presentations of some of the

world’s leading scientists and thinkers

such as Rich Goldman, Brian May, Jack

Szostak, Richard Dawkins, Jill Tarter, Joseph

Silk, George Smoot, Michel Mayor, Robert

Williams, Adam Burrows, Garik Israelian, Kip

Thorne, Sami Solanki and Leslie Sage.

This volume was originally conceived to mark

50 years since Yuri Gagarin’s fi rst spacefl ight,

but is now equally dedicated to one of our

greatest heroes in human history—Neil

Armstrong, who so sadly passed away in 2012.

Starmus: 50 Years of man in Space

celebrates the critical human moment we

have lived—the fi rst steps into outer space, the

explosion of knowledge about our cosmos, and

where it might all be taking us. It will become

one of the seminal books of our era.

Garik IsraelianDr Israelian, an astrophysicist at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (Spain), is the creative

director and spiritual father of the Starmus Festival, which was celebrated in June 2011, and on which this book is based. In 1999 he led an investigation, reported in the journal Nature, that found the first observational evidence that supernova explosions are responsible for the formation of black holes. His research has led to several high profile discoveries, published in Nature and other professional journals, on extrasolar planets, massive stars and black hole binary systems. He has published over 200 academic papers, and was awarded the 2010 Ambartsumian Prize for Astrophysics, along with Michel Mayor and Nuno Santos, for studies of extrasolar planets and their parent stars.

brian mayDr Brian May, CBE, has published research articles in the field of the solar zodiacal dust cloud. He is co-author,

with Sir Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, of the bestselling popular astronomy books Bang!, and The Cosmic Tourist. A lifelong devotee of 3-D imaging, with Elena Vidal he wrote and illustrated A Village Lost and Found—a book bringing the important work of 19th century stereoscopic photographer T. R. Williams into the 21st century. And in 2013 he published Diableries: A Stereoscopic Trip into Hell, with Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming. Dr May is most widely known as lead guitarist and founding member of the legendary rock band Queen. He is a passionate campaigner for the welfare of wild animals.

Alexey LeonovAlexey Leonov became the first human to conduct a space walk. This historic event occurred on the

Voskhod 2 flight. He was outside the spacecraft for 12 minutes and 9 seconds on 18 March, 1965, connected to the craft by a

5.35-metre tether. At the end of the spacewalk, Leonov’s spacesuit had inflated in the vacuum of space to the point where he could not re-enter the airlock. He opened a valve to allow some of the suit’s pressure to bleed off and was barely able to get back inside the capsule. From 1976 to 1982, Leonov was Chief Cosmonaut of the cosmonaut team and deputy director of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre. Arthur C. Clarke’s book 2010: Odyssey Two was dedicated to Leonov and Andrei Sakharov; the fictional spaceship Cosmonaut was named after him. He was put in command of the Soyuz 19 mission, the first joint Soviet-U.S. space project Soyuz-Apollo.

neil ArmstrongNeil Armstrong was Commander of Apollo 11 and was the first man to walk on the Moon. After serving as

a Naval Aviator, he served 17 years with the NACA and NASA as an engineer, test pilot, astronaut, and administrator. As a research pilot at NASA’s Flight Research Center at Edwards, California, he was a project pilot on many pioneering highspeed aircraft, including most of the early supersonic jets, the rocket powered X-1, the vertical take off and landing X-14, and the well known X-15. He transferred to astronaut status in1962. He received his engineering degrees from Purdue University and the University of Southern California. During the years 1971–1979 he was Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He is a member of the U. S. 1969, he and Neil Armstrong were the first men to set foot on the Moon. He graduated with first class honors in Mechanical Engineering at West Point in 1951 and joined the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot. In 1963, he

obtained his PhD in Astronautics, the subject of his thesis being the rendezvous of spacecraft in orbit. In that same year, he joined NASA as an astronaut. Known among his astronaut colleagues as “Dr Rendezvous”, in 1985 Aldrin devised a special type of Earth–Mars spacecraft trajectory now known as the Aldrin Cycler. Aldrin has written two autobiographies: Return To Earth (1973) and Magnificent Desolation (2009).

his Bachelor of Science degree in1955 from the United States Naval Academy, William (“Bill”) Alison Anders entered the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot. He earned his Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1962 from the Air Force Institute of Technology. In 1964 he joined NASA’s third group of astronauts. He was backup pilot for Gemini XI and Apollo 11. Anders took the “Earthrise” photograph—one of the most iconic images of the 20th century.

Jim LovellCaptain James A. Lovell, Jr, joined the space programme in 1962 following extensive experience as a Naval

Aviator and Test Pilot. He was backup pilot for Gemini 4 and backup commander for Gemini 9. He was the pilot on Gemini 7, the first rendezvous of two manned spacecraft in 1965, and commander of the Gemini 12 mission in 1966. Lovell became Command Module pilot and navigator for Apollo 8—man’s maiden voyage around the far side of the Moon—and backup commander to Neil Armstrong for the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. Lovell’s fourth and final flight was on Apollo 13 in 1970. Captain Lovell’s education prepared him for the change from explorer to a highly successful businessman who has received honorary doctorates from many universities. In 1994, he and Jeff Kluger wrote Lost Moon, the story of the courageous mission

of Apollo 13. In 1995, the film version of the bestseller Apollo 13 was released to rave reviews.

Runes are the magical alphabet of central and northern

Europe. Though they were used as a form of writing,

particularly for short magical inscriptions, their primary use was

divination and decision making. Meaning “whisper” or “secret”,

runes are a system of symbols that can connect you with your

ancestors, spirits, and the living world. Guy Ogilvy, one of the

world’s best known rune specialists has created a wonderfully

illustrated handbook full of detailed interpretations and

advice. The fully illustrated book is accompanied by 24 specially

commissioned birchwood runes from Northern Europe.

Pendulums are an ancient art of accessing information not

available to us through the use of our senses. Basic dowsing

pendulums consist of a weight suspended on a exible string

or chain. Any such combination will give radiesthetic (dowsing)

reaction in the hand of a “sensitive” person, though in truth,

only a very small percentage of people don’t get any reaction,

even after basic training.

Best-selling author Susanne Peymann provides a unique

bridge between the traditional esoteric approach, and modern

day psychology. In the accompanying book she presents

old and contemporary pendulum tables to provide practical

support to those seeking answers and support in today’s world

of constant decision making.

The fully illustrated book is accompanied by a high quality

brass pendulum.

Includes 78 cards of the antique Tarot of Marseilles

Tarot has existed in many forms for over 600 years. In its time

it has been a card game played by the Italian nobility, works

of ne art, allegories of moral teachings and philosophy, an

inspiration for novels and lms, a coded system for magic and

esoteric wisdom, a gateway for meditation and much more.

Tarot cards have existed in many forms for over 600 years

and are probably the most frequently used of all the oracles,

with millions of people worldwide use the Tarot on a regular

basis. Tarot cards have inspired artists from Salvador Dali to

Bob Dylan. Psychologists, philosophers and theologists have

used Tarots and have transformed the practice into a guiding

medium with which to help interpret our modern lives.

Using the antique Tarot de Marseilles, one of the most

famous tarot decks in the world, makes it easy to open your

heart and your mind to new ideas and can provide solutions

to many problems. As you become more deeply involved with

the cards you will gain a truly unique insight into aspects of

your life where you are seeking help or advice.

Johannes Fiebig and Evelin Bürger are recognized as leading

authors within the international world of Tarot.

Numbers can speak. Their language is numerology: an ancient

science that is a numerical analysis of life—your life.

Numerology explains your motivation, reveals your talents

and displays how you appear to others. By using it, you can

map the trends of each day—see what is happening, what has

happened, and why. And it can indicate what is to come.

By using this language of numbers it is possible to improve

the quality of your life, spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and

materially.

In the fully illustrated book and accompanying 30 cards,

authors Christine Bengel and Patrick Stahel clearly explain how

to use numerology and how you can bring about positive

changes to your life.

u Osho’s books have sold millions

u The Osho Foundation is well connected on social media platforms

u There are few books by such a renowned author that cover all four Eastern

disciplines

There has long been a fascination in Western countries with the mysteries of the

East—and in recent times this has extended to the spiritual realm. As more people

begin to defi ne themselves as ‘spiritual’ rather than ‘religious’—in search of a more

open and individual approach to the sacred—the Eastern traditions have held a

special appeal.

Unlike religions that were born in the Middle East—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—

most Eastern approaches to spirituality place little or no emphasis on a supreme being

as a source of divine guidance and dispenser of blessings. Rather, the emphasis is to

develop one’s own inner sense of the sacred—or, in the words of Buddha, to ‘be a

light unto yourself.’ This volume explores four major streams of Eastern wisdom as seen

through the understanding of a contemporary mystic, and off ers the reader a window

into a broad spectrum of new possibilities from the disciplined awareness of Buddha

and Zen, to the relaxed acceptance of Tao and Tantra. Each has something to off er the

reader with an open mind and a taste for the challenge of breaking old patterns, and

exploring new possibilities.

The Dead Sea Scrolls continue to fascinate readers from all

walks of life. Ever since they were fi rst discovered by a Bedouin

shepherd in the Judean desert in 1947, they have been the

subject of endless debate and speculation which continues to

this day.

It was not until as recently as 1991, when all 800 documents

from eleven caves were fi nally available in translation, that

numerous alternative theories were put forward about their

authorship and their dating.

The now famous Copper Scroll with its detailed list of

supposed buried treasure is examined as are the theories

surrounding it, such as the

possible connection with the lost

treasure of the Knights Templar.

Finally, the relevance of the Dead

Sea Scrolls to the New Testament

and the messianic Jesus are

explored.

Since their descent into oblivion in 1307 from their position as

one of the most powerful institutions of the Middle Ages, the

Knights Templar have been a source of great fascination, and

the subject of much historical research.

In this beautifully illustrated book, Alan Butler takes the

reader from their humble beginnings to their tumultuous

destruction 200 years later.

The author covers every theory relating to the Templar Order

from their association with Freemasonry to the proposition

that key members of the order escaped with the fabled

Templar treasure to Switzerland where they continue one of

their major activities as bankers to the world.

The Cathars practiced vegetarianism, non-violence, a liberal

attitude towards women, and tolerance. And, without lifting a

sword, posed a threat to Catholicism greater than the Muslims

or Jews. Catharism was the most successful heresy of the

Middle Ages.

The Cathars believed themselves to be heirs to the true

Christian heritage, completely rejecting the trappings of the

Catholic Church. The Cathars gained support from the nobility,

peasants, and artisans in Languedoc .

Alarmed at the movement’s spread, the Catholic Church

launched the Albigensian Crusade—the fi rst to be directed

against fellow Christians—exterminating virtually all trace of

Catharism.

Today, the Cathars mystique

is stronger than ever as

historians continue to fi nd

links with movements such

as the Knights Templar, the

Troubadours, and the search

for the Holy Grail.

Mary Magdalene—probably the Bible’s most enigmatic and

controversial fi gure—has fi red imaginations for nearly two

thousand years.

In the search for the true story, the author takes the reader

through the gospels of the New Testament, the Gnostic

Gospels, and Nag Hammadi texts, as well as through the High

Middle Ages when adoration of Mary Magdalene was at its

height.

Dr. Ralls considers both the Western tradition of Mary

Magdalene, which documents her escaping persecution and

landing in the south of France with her family and many others;

and the Eastern tradition which describes her ending her days

as a hermit in Ephesus.

All is considered—from Mary Magdalene’s importance to

medieval pilgrims to the more contentious theories of her

supposed marriage to Jesus.

Everyone farts, admit it or not. From the ancient Greeks to monarchs and presidents,

here is a chronicle of broken wind that sails through the ages. Featuring classic

limericks, actual history, and humorous defi nitions, this book is a real ripper.

This is a collection of papers from the Bart Collection on the history of farting.

The collection was started by Benjamin Bart on discovering several papers in his

grandmother Emily’s cedar chest, and is available with the help of the Austrian

Literature Council. The book encompasses all aspects of the history of farting, from the

place of farts in culture through the ages to an A-Z of classic farts. Also included are

sections on Le Petomane, France’s greatest farter whose performances impressed Le

Moulin Rouge, and on the Farta from Sparta, the old rugby club favorite immortalized

in 12-verse epic limerick. For the medically minded, a chapter considers the physiology

What they say about the Ponderables

“Adults with an interest in science and science history would enjoy this book. I think the book

would be valuable to Junior High and High School students, as well as college students,

especially those studying the Philosophy of Science.” Tucson Citizen

“Readers are immediately drawn to the colorful, detailed photographs, artworks, and diagrams…” bookpleasures.com

“Finally, a book for slightly older kids: The

Universe: An Illustrated History of Astronomy,

by British science writer Tom Jackson. It

would work for kids 10 and up, I think.

It’s heavy, hardbound, and huge, with an

impressive coff ee-table-esque design. The

publisher, Shelter Harbor Press, currently

has three other books in the same series:

one about mathematics, one about the

elements, and one about physics. They’re

all beautiful. They’d make an awesome bar

mitzvah gift for a science geek, and I use

that word in the most aff ectionate way.

(Reader, I married one.)” Tablet Magazine“This is exactly the kind of engaging book I loved to

have in my classroom library--something a student

could pick up and be quickly drawn in to, with the

chance of sparking a bigger interest in the subject.

It would also be a great coff ee table book to have

at home for young kids who are beginning to learn

about the world around them.” Teachforever.com

“The teenage math whiz deserves Mathematics: An Illustrated History of Numbers which is an exquisite history of math…” Washington Post

“I am a homeschooling mom and I really appreciate books like this. Many of us were conditioned to recoil from subjects like chemistry and physics in school, and I think it’s because they came at us in a way and at a time not of our choosing. The subjects themselves are fascinating! For heaven’s sakes, they explain how the world works! It doesn’t get any better than that.” MassMom.com
