A LOOK AT THE IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE PAST YEAR THAT SUPPORTERS LIKE YOU HAvE MADE POSSIBLE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED HELP IN SECURINg EQUAL RIgHTS FOR LgBT NEW YORKERS.• We launched an unprecedented campaign to raise public awareness and support for equality for transgender New Yorkers through television commercials, direct mail, digital advertising, and radio spots. Through our TRANScribe Project, we created personal videos and written narratives to share the real-life experiences of transgender New Yorkers and their families. The campaign led to five new newspapers, including The New York Times, publishing their support for ending discrimination against transgender people.
• Efforts to garner additional partners to pass the gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (gENDA) secured the support of nearly three dozen women’s rights organizations, union and labor leaders representing millions of New Yorkers, hundreds of faith leaders, and law enforcement officials, including New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. gENDA passed in the Assembly for the sixth time, but leaders of the State Senate failed to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.
• The Child-Parent Security Act, a bill that aims to strengthen legal protections for LgBT families and overturn the ban on surrogacy in New York State, was introduced for the first time in both chambers of the State Legislature. This bill will define parentage for children and parents who are often considered legal strangers when a genetic connection, adoptive relationship, or marital-type presumption of parentage is in place. This bill will also overturn the ban on surrogacy in the Empire State, which is among the most draconian bans of its kind in the nation.
• Advocacy for funding to provide care for runaway and homeless youth – 40 % of whom identify as LgBT – yielded an additional $254,000 in the state budget. Add to that the $2.35 million originally earmarked for the providers who serve these vulnerable young people.
• We played a leading role in unlocking a $1 million grant from the New York State Department of Labor to fund our partners at The Ali Forney Center, Hetrick-Martin Institute and the LgBT Community Center to help homeless and runaway youth obtain education, training and job placement assistance.
• More than 700 hundred LgBT New Yorkers and allies traveled to Albany in April for Equality & justice Day where participants lobbied their elected officials on gENDA, meeting the marked health and human service needs of our community and urged increased support for homeless and runaway youth services.
• The Pride Agenda played a leading role on an amicus in support of United States v. Windsor. Ultimately, the Supreme Court of the United States agreed with our position and struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), declaring same-sex marriage federally recognized in states where it’s legal.
• This summer we released Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Disparities in New York City, a groundbreaking report on how race, ethnicity, age, gender and poverty impact the health of LgBT people. We will use this report to continue to advocate for inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity on city and state intake forms, to allow us to learn more about our community’s unique needs.
• We continued to make workplaces safer and more welcoming for all LgBT New Yorkers, through the efforts of our Pride in My Workplace program. We conducted dozens trainings and individual technical assistance for corporations on many workplace issues, including the need for domestic partnership benefits in the wake of the Windsor decision, creating a transgender-inclusive workplace and other best practices.
• Our Political Action Committee made endorsements in local races across New York State in the 2013 elections. More LgBT candidates won their primaries for seats in the New York City Council than ever before. In November of 2012, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney and State Senator Brad Hoylman, both former Pride Agenda Board members, were elected.
• In june, we launched a new brand identity and redesigned prideagenda.org and social channels that enable us to better communicate our message, share resources and expand our reach.

Empire fall dinner ad .indd 1 9/11/13 3:30 PM
good evening friends,
It is a genuine pleasure to welcome you to our 22nd annual Fall Dinner. Tonight marks the one year anniversary since I joined the Pride Agenda. I am thrilled to be leading the Pride Agenda at such an exciting time for our movement.
The progress that we have made over the years has been fueled by your generous support. Passage of marriage in New York in 2011 helped to pave the way for the landmark Supreme Court decision this june. It’s a privilege to honor the legacy of both of tonight’s honorees, Roberta A. Kaplan, for her fearless representation in United States v. Windsor, and Freedom to Marry founder, Evan Wolfson, who laid the groundwork for the legalization of same-sex marriage both at the state and federal levels. Tonight is the perfect opportunity to celebrate that progress and recommit to future success.
As we rightfully celebrate our victories this evening, let us not forget about all that’s left to be done. We have not yet realized equal rights for all LgBT New Yorkers and our families. The Pride
Agenda continues our tireless pursuit of full equality and justice for all. Our priorities include: finally securing basic civil rights for all transgender New Yorkers, electing public officials who will serve with the best interests of our community top of mind, protecting the rights of all families across the state, and advocating for resources for runaway and homeless youth, as well as for our more than 50 organizations across the state that provide health and human services to LgBT New Yorkers.
Each year the Pride Agenda advocates to maintain and increase funding for some of the most vulnerable in our community, runaway and homeless youth. We were successful in securing a modest increase in this year’s state budget, but we realized that it’s not enough. We looked to new sources and unlocked a $1 million grant from the Department of Labor, which will benefit the important services that our partner organizations Ali Forney, the Center, and Hetrick-Martin – will provide to the more than 2,000 estimated homeless LgBT youth in New York City. Our Network partners continue to rely on our political prowess to secure the resources they need to provide much-needed health and human services. We’re proud to have recently unveiled the first ever statewide Transgender Resource guide, a comprehensive online encyclopedia of trans-friendly services and will continue to support and uplift these important organizations in Albany.
The Pride Agenda is also taking a leading advocacy role in family protections. We are proudly supporting legislation in Albany called the Child-Parent Security Act. The bill would replace an outmoded ban on surrogacy in our state, and remove some of the cumbersome and invasive barriers that families face with second parent adoption. We believe that devoted parents shouldn’t have to travel across the country to create their families. We should have the ability to do so here in New York with full legal protections. You’ll hear much more on this in the coming months.
We so appreciate your support tonight and throughout the year. Without you, we could not continue fighting for equality and justice for LgBT New Yorkers and our families.
I look forward to an unforgettable evening with all of you and another momentous year.
Warm regards,
Nathan M. Schaefer

FROm THE EVENT CO-CHAIRS
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Empire State Pride Agenda’s Fall Dinner – our annual celebration of New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LgBT) community.
The Fall Dinner gathers together corporate supporters, union leaders, politicians, community members, and straight allies from across the state and country who are committed to the Pride Agenda’s mission of winning equality and justice for LgBT New Yorkers and our families. Thank you for being here tonight and demonstrating your continued support of our work.
Tonight, we honor two marriage pioneers with this year’s Douglas W. jones Leadership Award: Roberta A. Kaplan and Evan Wolfson. These New Yorkers are visionaries who have dramatically changed the national landscape for marriage equality — Evan, by litigating the first successful marriage case in Hawaii and later founding Freedom to Marry, and Robbie, by winning the landmark Windsor case before the United States Supreme Court.
We also are excited to welcome our fellow Board member, Billy Porter, as our emcee. It is no surprise that Billy took home the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his electrifying performance as Lola in the Tony-winning Best Musical, Kinky Boots. We greatly appreciate Billy taking a night off from the show to be with us here this evening.
Many individuals have dedicated countless hours over the last year to make tonight a success. First, we must acknowledge the hard work of the Fall Dinner Steering Committee and, in particular, the leadership of our vice Chairs Scott Bennett, joseph Evangelisti and Marla Hassner. These talented and dedicated people are the reason most of you are here tonight, and we applaud their passion for the Pride Agenda.
We also thank our fellow Board members who have supported all of the Pride Agenda’s efforts over this incredible year. And, of course, we thank the exceptional staff of the Pride Agenda — led by Executive Director Nathan M. Schaefer — whose talents have produced not only tonight’s Fall Dinner, but many workshops, webinars, panels and other special events throughout the year.
Most of all, we want to thank all of you for being here tonight. Your generosity is essential to the success of the Pride Agenda’s mission of winning equality and justice for all LgBT New Yorkers and our families. While our work is far from over, we take this evening to celebrate and share with you both the Pride Agenda’s successes this year and its plans for future wins on behalf of our community.
Enjoy the evening!
Sincerely,
Kate Hathaway Norman C. Simon

FROm THE BOARD CO-CHAIRS
Dear Fall Dinner guests,
Welcome to the Empire State Pride Agenda’s 22nd annual Fall Dinner! Thank you for your generous support of the Pride Agenda’s mission of winning full equality and justice for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LgBT) New Yorkers and our families.
In the Supreme Court’s groundbreaking United States v. Windsor decision, justice Kennedy wrote of New York’s path toward marriage equality:
“Slowly at first and then in rapid course, the laws of New York came to acknowledge the urgency of this issue for same-sex couples who wanted to affirm their commitment to one another before
their children, their family, their friends, and their community. . . . New York acted to enlarge the definition of marriage to correct what its citizens and elected representatives perceived to be an injustice that they had not earlier known or understood.”
The Pride Agenda is proud of its central role both in laying the groundwork for this journey toward marriage equality, and making it a reality. As the Court recognized, New York’s enactment of marriage equality conferred “a dignity and status of immense import.”
Having won the right to marry in our state, the Pride Agenda also was pleased to appear as an amicus party in Windsor to explain to the Court the harm done to married same-sex couples by the Defense of Marriage Act. We are elated that on account of the brilliant lawyering of this year’s honoree, Robbie kaplan, the federal government must respect all marriages equally. And we know that through the continued efforts of Evan Wolfson, one day soon all gay people in our country will enjoy the fundamental right to marry who they love.
Our victory for marriage equality, while momentous, is but one part of Pride Agenda’s mission of equality and justice. This year, the Pride Agenda managed to restore draconian proposed cuts for the health and human service needs of the LgBT community. We also helped secure $1 million in funding for LgBT homeless and runaway youth, a particularly vulnerable part of our community. We continued to advocate passage of the gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (gENDA), launching a well-funded education campaign and winning support of this long overdue legislation from editorial boards across the state, including The New York Times. And we worked to end the ban on surrogacy in our state and to strengthen our families through the Child-Parent Security Act.
There is so much more to be done, and we are deeply grateful for the generosity you have shown the Pride Agenda to enable our work to continue. Thank you once again for your support of our Fall Dinner, and please enjoy tonight’s event.

Long-time gay and lesbian civil rights leader Evan Wolfson lives in New York City, where he launched Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide, in 2003. Wolfson now serves as Freedom to Marry’s President.
In 2000, the National Law journal honored Wolfson’s civil rights leadership by naming him one of the “100 most influential attorneys in America.” In 2004, Time magazine named him one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” In 2012, Wolfson was awarded the Barnard Medal of Distinction alongside President Barack Obama. He has been called “the godfather of gay marriage” by Newsweek / The Daily Beast, and, “the indispensable man in bringing marriage equality to America” by Andrew Sullivan.
From 1989 until 2001, Wolfson worked full-time at Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund, the nation’s preeminent advocacy group working on behalf of
gay and lesbian individuals. As director of Lambda Legal’s Marriage Project, Wolfson created the National Freedom to Marry Coalition and began leading the ongoing national marriage equality movement for equal marriage protections. He was co-counsel in Hawaii’s landmark Baehr case for the freedom to marry, which launched the current global marriage equality movement. Wolfson also contributed his expertise to the team in Baker v. vermont, the vermont Supreme Court ruling that led to the creation of “civil union,” a new legal marital status for same-sex couples, and to the gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders team in goodridge v. Department of Public Health, which on May 17, 2004 led to the freedom to marry in Massachusetts. Wolfson has also played a part in work to win the freedom to marry in other nations, including Canada, Argentina, the United Kingdom, New zealand, and Australia.
On April 26, 2000, Wolfson became the first Lambda attorney to argue before the United States Supreme Court when he urged the justices to reject the Boy Scouts of America’s appeal of a unanimous ruling from the New jersey Supreme Court striking down their ban on gay members and leaders. Wolfson had represented Eagle Scout james Dale since he was expelled from the BSA in 1990. Following the 5-4 vote, Wolfson helped shape the extraordinary national response from non-gay and gay people and institutions against the BSA’s discrimination, challenging their harmful message to youth.
In other cases, Wolfson championed gay and lesbian military personnel fighting for the freedom to serve, gay parents wishing to adopt children and preserve their visitation rights, a Florida deputy sheriff fired for being gay, a person with AIDS seeking life-saving medical treatment refused to him by his insurer, a woman denied work as a Dallas police officer because of the state’s anti-gay “sodomy” laws, and NYC employees demanding equal health benefits and recognition for their partners.
Wolfson has published numerous articles on sexual orientation and civil rights, beginning with his 1983 law school thesis on the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. As a pro bono cooperating attorney for Lambda Legal from 1984 to 1989, Wolfson wrote Lambda’s amicus briefs to the Supreme Court in Bowers v. Hardwick and NgTF v. Board of Education of Oklahoma City.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Pittsburgh, Wolfson graduated from Yale College in 1978. For two years after graduation, he worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in a village in Togo, West Africa. Upon returning, he attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1983 and moving on to teach political philosophy at Harvard College. Wolfson then served as assistant district attorney for Kings County in Brooklyn, NY. There, he wrote amicus briefs that helped win the U.S. Supreme Court’s ban on race discrimination in jury selection (Batson v. Kentucky) and the New York State high court’s elimination of the marital rape exemption (People v. Liberta).
Before joining Lambda, Wolfson served in Washington, D.C. as Associate Counsel to Lawrence Walsh in the Office of Independent Counsel (Iran/Contra), and in 1992, he served on the New York State Task Force on Sexual Harassment. Wolfson has taught as an adjunct professor of law at Columbia University and Rutgers University Law Schools, and served as a senior fellow at The New School’s Wolfson Center for National Affairs.
Wolfson’s first book, Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality, and gay People’s Right to Marry was originally published by Simon & Schuster in july 2004, and was re-released in paperback with a new foreword in june 2005.

Roberta A. (Robbie) Kaplan, a partner in the Litigation Department at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & garrison LLP, has been described as a “powerhouse corporate litigator” and “pressure junkie” who “thrives on looking at the big picture” whether “in the gay-marriage legal fight or high-profile corporate scandals.” Robbie has been selected as one of “The 100 Most Influential Lawyers,” as one of “The 500 Leading Lawyers,” and as one of the top “40 Under 40” lawyers in the United States.
Robbie has extensive experience representing clients such as Fitch Ratings and jPMorgan Chase in complex, high-profile matters. In recent years, she has been active in matters involving mortgage-backed securities, structured finance transactions, and credit rating opinions. As a result, Robbie has developed an expertise dealing with the complex interplay between regulatory investigations, criminal prosecutions, and the onslaught of civil lawsuits that typically follow.
Robbie successfully argued before the United States Supreme Court on behalf of Edith Windsor in United States v. Windsor, the Supreme Court case that may be the most significant civil rights decision of our time. In Windsor, the nation’s highest court ruled that a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violated the U.S. Constitution by barring legally married same-sex couples from enjoying the wide-ranging benefits of marriage conferred under federal law. Although she has been described as a “new hero to the gay rights movement,” she has credited her friends and family “for helping her get through the ‘out-of-body experience’ and historic, high-stress litigation work for which she is noted.”
Robbie recently won a victory for Hailo when a New York state court vacated a temporary restraining order that halted implementation of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission’s innovative taxi e-hail pilot program. She previously served as lead trial counsel representing California following the bankruptcy of Pacific gas & Electric Company resulting from the California energy crisis in 2001.
Robbie has published on a variety of legal topics, including the chapter, “Investigating the Case” in Commercial Litigation in New York State Courts, as well as the chapter, “Interplay Between Commercial Litigation and Criminal Proceedings” in Commercial Litigation in the Federal Circuit Courts. She also recently published an article entitled “Proof vs. Prejudice” in 37 N.Y.U. Review of Law & Social Change (2013). While serving as a senior law clerk to then Chief judge judith S. Kaye, Robbie assisted judge Kaye in connection with a number of articles, including State Courts at the Dawn of a New Century: Common Law Courts Reading Statutes and Constitutions, 70 NYU L Rev 1 35 (April 1995). Robbie also clerked for judge Mark L. Wolf of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Robbie’s legal work has been honored by a number of organizations, including the New York City Council, the Family Equality Council, and the National Organization for Women. In 2011, she was honored as the distinguished alumna of the year by the Columbia Law School Women’s Association. She has also received the New York County Lawyers’ Association’s William Nelson Cromwell Award.
Robbie currently serves on the Board of Directors of the gay Men’s Health Crisis and the New York County Lawyers’ Association. She served on New York Chief judge jonathan Lippman’s Task Force on Commercial Litigation in the 21st Century and continues to serve on The Commercial Division Advisory Council.
