DESCRIPTION OF COURSES NOT IN THE 2017-18 ACADEMIC REGISTER *Includes Revised Course Descriptions*

AAH-211: Rome in the Age of Michelangelo. Matthew, L. The most famous artist and the most famous city in the history of

Western culture. How did the much earlier and long-lived fame of Rome affect its most famous artist, and how did both interact

with the equally long-lived institution of Christian papacy? We will examine how culture, languages, politics, warfare and religion

are all intertwined in the art and architecture of the period, particularly as exemplified in the career of Michelangelo, a native of

Florence.

ATH-250/EGL-281: History of Shakespeare in Performance. Venning, D. Shakespeare’s plays are the most-staged theatrical

works in the world, and this course will interrogate the building of this literary and theatrical tradition. Our course is a survey of

the history of Shakespearean plays in performance, examining interpretive strategies, production techniques, traditions of staging,

and innovative practices that have contributed to the multiplicity of ways in which Shakespeare’s plays have been produced and

received globally, from Shakespeare’s own time up to our the present moment, both onstage and onscreen. Through critical

reading, class discussions, presentations, in-class reports and reflective writing assignments, reading responses, and longer essays,

students will hone their thinking about Shakespeare, literature, and performance. Pre-Requisite: EGL-100, 101, or 102, OR,

Declared Theatre Major.

BIO-205: Topics in Molecular Biology. Horton, S. In this course, students will learn the key concepts of the molecular biology

of the cell as well as how to integrate the principles of cell structure and function with the underlying molecular mechanism(s).

Discussions will focus on gene structure, mechanisms of replication, transcription and translation, mutation and DNA repair, gene

regulations, and genomics. Each of these concepts will be discussed in the context of a unifying theme selected by the instructor.

Possible examples of these themes include viruses, epigenetics, human diseases, biotechnology and artificial organisms, cell fate

determination and differentiation. Pre-Requisite: BIO 101, 102. Bioengineering Majors will take BIO-101.

BIO-206: Topics in Physiology. Kirkton, S. Cells are organized into tissues, organs, and organ systems, which carry out

functions of energy storage and transformation, transport, signaling, and the regulation of internal conditions. These functions

arise from activities and interactions that span different levels of the organizational hierarchy. This course will focus on how

physiological processes arise and are controlled and why these mechanisms have evolved. This course will also demonstrate how

physiology can help bridge understandings between molecular/cellular biology and ecology/evolutionary biology. Pre-Requisite:

BIO-101 and BIO-102; BNG students can take without BIO-101

BIO-368: Advanced Molecular Biology.Theme: Microbe Hunters: Crowdsourcing Antibiotic Discovery. Salvo, J. Many of

the advances made in molecular biology have been based on work done in microbial systems. This term the course will focus on

understanding gene expression and gene regulation in microbes as well as how bacterial systems have become advanced tools for

the study of these processes. The integrated laboratory component will focus on the discovery and characterization of antibiotic-

producing soil microbes, using microbiological and molecular techniques. As part of the Small World Initiative (SWI), students

will contribute their findings to a database shared by a network of student researchers from over 150 other institutions around the

globe. Pre-Requisite: BIO-225.

EGL-220: Romantic Revolution: Burkett, A. The Romantic period was one of Britain's most "revolutionary" eras in a number of

important ways. For England, the age was marked by dramatic social, political, literary, and scientific upheaval and change. In

this course we will investigate the various causes that were envisioned, promoted, and enacted during this era and trace their often

wide-ranging and revolutionary effects. Readings will likely include selections from the following authors: William Wordsworth,

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Blake, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, Jane Austen, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats. Pre-

Requisite: EGL-100, 101, 102.

EGL-304: Junior Seminar: The Brontë Sisters. Lewin, J. Three authors in one family – sisters, survivors, and autodidacts –

Currer, Acton, and Ellis Bell are the names under which they publish. Currer, or Charlotte, outlives the others, if only by a few

years, enabling her to almost double her sisters’ combined output and become the family’s aesthetic arbiter and literary executor.

Upon her untimely death (at age 39), her contemporary author, Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell, writes a biography memorializing,

lionizing, and some suggest mythologizing the family. Due to time constraints I have selected only works of first-person fiction

(though Emily also published poems), excluding Charlotte’s Shirley and her posthumously published The Professor. You may

wish to consider these or other contemporary works either for your contextual presentations or in your final projects. General

considerations on a Junior seminar: This course is designed to hone your reading and writing skills and to challenge you to begin

thinking critically and writing scholarly research papers (in preparation for senior seminars or honors theses). We will devote

both class time and individual conference sessions to these goals. Pre-Requisite: Two 200-level English courses.

FLM-201: Documentary Filmmaking. De Seve, J. For beginners to advanced, Documentary Filmmaking presents the

foundations of non-fiction filmmaking: from camera and equipment use to interviewing techniques and storytelling

strategies. While creating a short documentary on a subject of the student’s choosing, participants will come to understand the

interface between them and world around them through the filter of the camera. Students can work in a variety of documentary

styles which are explained in class. These forms include the poetic, expository, observational and participatory form. The skills

learned in this class are valuable across many disciplines and jobs which involve interpersonal relationships, media skills, research

and working with subjects.

FLM-202: Digital Filmmaking. De Seve, J. For beginners to advanced, Digital Filmmaking presents the foundations of fiction

filmmaking: from lighting and camera work to editing, sound and working on set. In the first part of the course, students recreate

scenes from well-known films. In the second part, students script and shoot their own short films. This class is appropriate for

filmmaking newbies as well as for those who wish to deepen their understanding and practice of the craft. The skills learned in

this class will help students gain a foundation in media skills increasingly in demand across many majors and in the job market.

FRN-416: Representations of the banlieue. Bouhet, E. The banlieue today occupies a great part of the collective imagination of

the French that oscillates between fantasy and reality. While the French “suburbs”, “projects” or banlieues are challenging to

define or even to translate into English, they represent an architectural and urban reality that has been depicted in various verbal

and visual modes of expression. In this interdisciplinary course, through texts, films, music and visual arts, we will explore the

meanings and representations of the banlieue in France. Students will discuss the dynamics between the dominant discourse and

these diverse representations of the banlieue in a theoretical framework inspired by postcolonial studies. The works studied may

include films : Deux ou trois choses que je sais d’elle (Godard, 1967), La Haine (Kassovitz, 1995), Qu’Allah bénisse la France

(Abd Al Malik, 2014), Bande de filles (Sciamma, 2014), a novel, short stories and a play :Terminus nord (Wagner, 1992),

Chroniques d’une société annoncée (2007) and Delta Charlie Delta (Simonot, 2016). In addition, the class will examine relevant

songs, political discourses, press articles and television clips. Following a chronological approach, the course will cover a

timeframe that goes from the 50’s creation of the grands ensembles to the present. As a reflection of France’s contemporary crisis,

the study of the banlieues will allow us to consider questions regarding immigration, racism, class, gender, Islam, and national

identity. Class conducted in French. Pre-Requisite: FRN-300 level

HST-171: Europe and the Americas in the Era of Columbus. Meade, T. A study of the relationship of Spain and Portugal with

Africa, Asia, and the Americas from the early fifteenth through the late eighteenth centuries. The course examines the early

civilizations of Africa, Europe, and the Americas in the era before the voyage of Columbus and the interaction among these three

worlds in the centuries after the Encounter. It concludes with an examination of the cultural legacy of Africa and Europe on the

indigenous societies of the Americas and the subsequent development of multicultural and multiracial independent nations. The

central role of gender relations between the civilizations, the gendered conflict that characterized the era of exploration, and the

role of masculinity are all examined.

MTH-063: Mathematics of Sustainability. Wang, J. We will use mathematically concepts and tools to quantitatively explore

sustainability topics. We will examine how mathematics relate to global issues, from economic practice to environmental

protection to social justice, and what impacts they bring to our society, population, health, climate, energy, industrial agriculture,

ecological footprint, and natural resources. The mathematical concepts include numbers, measurement and scales, ratios and

percentage, rate of change, functions, regression, linear and exponential growth, solving linear equations and inequalities, solving

exponential equations, logical implication, mathematical modeling, interpreting numerical and statistical information, and

presenting data. As a student and future leader, this course aims to guide you to make a connection between mathematics and

issues we care about, to engage in quantitative reasoning and discussion about sustainability, to develop step-by-step problem

solving skilss, to use the knowledge to reach justified decisions, and to empower yourself to become to catalyst of change.

PHL-180: Theories of the Good Life. Nowakowski, D. Across the ancient world, philosophy was not merely as the intellectual

study of arguments. Even more importantly, it was a practical way of living the best possible human life. This course takes a

cross-cultural approach to theories of the good life by studying ancient Greek, Chinese, and Indian theories, as well as more

modern versions of these theories. We will explore the beliefs and arguments which underlie these theories, and explore how we

might put them into practice in our own lives.

PHY-010: Physics and Astronomy Senior Seminar. Staff. Discussion of special topics in physics and astronomy relevant to

senior research projects and professional development. Attendance at Physics and Astronomy seminars is required. Required for

all Physics and Astronomy Majors and co-requisite for PHY 490 (Senior Two Term Thesis Research) and PHY 493 (Senior

Writing Project). Students must pass PHY-010 to receive a passing grade in PHY 490 or PHY 493. Pre-Requisite: Must be

Physics or Astronomy Majors

PSC- 233: Human Rights and Political Theory. Cidam, C.We are living in an age of human rights. Today, there is hardly any

disagreement that we, as human beings, are entitled to a certain set of rights by the mere fact of being human. This almost

universal acceptance of human rights has changed the world we live in dramatic ways. Following the aftermath of World War II,

we have seen the emergence of innumerable international and nongovernmental organizations that are specifically devoted to the

protection of human rights. And yet, despite all these developments, human rights abuses, in different guises, rage on all over the

world, including the developed countries of the West. During the course of the term, rather than covering the usual terrain by

focusing on the outrageous and blatant human rights abuses undertaken by dictatorial regimes, we will turn our gaze to our own

world and critically engage with the human rights issues that plague Western democracies, especially since the beginning of the

“global war on terror” following the 9/11 terror attacks. Given how central human rights are to the identity of the democratic

West, it is particularly disconcerting to observe increasing number of human rights abuses in countries such as the United States,

UK, and various members of the European Union. What can account for this unsettling fact? Are the ongoing human rights abuses

a result of an implementation problem bringing to light the inadequacies of the current international human rights regime(s) or are

they symptomatic of a deeper problem that goes to the heart of the notion of human rights itself? Do the unprecedented

developments in human rights law announce the coming of a new and better world where all people, regardless of their race,

gender and citizenship status will benefit from legal protection or is the idea of expanding human rights to whole humanity a

utopian dream that runs the risk of becoming an ideology used by the Western powers to legitimize their new colonial adventures?

PSC-265: Mass Incarceration. Plencner, J. This course asks students to consider the rise of mass incarceration in the United

States from political, policy, legal, social movement, and political-cultural perspectives. “Mass incarceration” is a term many have

heard, yet is frequently misunderstood. Addressing the development of mass incarceration historically, we will consider not only

what mass incarceration means today, but how and why it arrived. This lens will allow us to gather a nuanced understanding of

mass incarceration, but it will also encourage us to consider how related phenomena—such as the institutions Carceral State—can

be pushed toward equitable and just reform. We will learn how, just as mass incarceration and the institutions of the Carceral State

and rise over time, so too can alternative visions of justice take root and reshape our collective futures. Pre-Requisite: PSC 111 or

112 or Sophomore standing.

PSC-359: Seminar in International Relations: Trump's Foreign and Defense Policies -- Design or Chaos? Brown, C. This

seminar will focus on the foreign and defense policies of the Trump Administration in a world of transition. We will examine the

policy-making process in the Trump White House (and its revolving-door cast of characters); regional concerns (such as Korea,

the Middle East, the crisis in the European Union; and larger important policy issues such as China's emergence as the world's

largest economy and Asia's new hegemon, Russian aggressiveness in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, cyber warfare and

attacks on national sovereignty, nuclear proliferation, immigration, the reshaping of globalization, and the new nationalisms

(including Trump's).

PSY-225: The Psychology of Language: Rogers, C. This course will present a broad overview of language and its instantiation

within the human brain. We will pay particular attention to 1) the ways that neurological disorders impact language functioning,

and 2) how these patterns of language breakdown inform psychological models of typical language processing. This course will

cover basic neuroanatomy as well as a survey of language related topics (e.g., speech perception, deafness, language acquisition,

linguistic diversity). Pre-Requisite: PSY-100

SOC-374: Mental Health and Society: Frandino, D. This course is designed to provide a comprehensive view of the social,

political, and economic climate within which mental health services operate. Topics will include theories of mental illness,

epidemiology of mental illness, history of mental illness, and the social experience of being a psychiatric patient and as well as

other contemporary issues. As inequalities deepen with our society increasing numbers of people lead economically insecure,

precarious lives in a society which is increasingly toxic for mental health. Mental health, despite the stigmatization it can produce,

is everyone’s business. Pre-Requisite: SOC-100
