Chuck Wiseman, Complete Contracting, Inc.

As our economy starts to pick back up after the nationwide recession, our

schedules become busier. Even though time may be crunched for you and/or your employees, I still highly encourage you to find time to get involved in our as-sociation.

When your company renews their HBASE membership this year, take a minute to really think about why you be-long to this group. Is it for the insurance discounts? Or is it for the networking or promotional benefits?

No matter what the reason is, I’m glad that you are a member of this fine organization.

Members of the HBASE should take great pride in what we have accom-plished while working together as a team. When we take off our “business” hat and put on our “HBASE” hat, it bene-fits not only the association but also our industry as a whole.

Your involvement in our association is crucial. Don’t fear that it requires hours of your time each week though. There are involvement opportunities of all lev-els.

Some businesses choose to show their support of the industry by sponsor-ing an HBASE event. Meanwhile, other members take advantage of the network-ing opportunities by frequently attending various HBASE functions.

If you’ve just joined the association within the past couple of years but aren’t sure how to become involved or where to start, give the HBASE staff a call. They will be happy to visit with you about the many possibilities.

Don’t be shy. Come to the mixers (next one is September 27) and step out of your comfort zone by introducing your-self to people you may not have met be-fore.

This may be a challenging first step to take but once you master it, you’ll be off and running in no time!

President’s Message

“When we take off our

‘business’ hat and put on our

‘HBASE’ hat, it benefits

not only the association but also

our industry as a whole.”

Continue to Use the Current Form I-9 for Employment Eligibility Verification

The U.S. Citizen and Immigration

Services (USCIS), a division of the De-partment of Homeland Security, has an-nounced that employers should continue to use the current Form I-9, which was set to expire on August 31, 2012, until further notice (www.uscis.gov).

Under federal immigration law, all employers are required to complete Form I-9 for all new hires to verify the employee’s identity and work authoriza-tion. In the upper right hand corner of the form it notes “Expires 08/31/12,” however continued use of this form after expiration will not count as a paperwork violation in an I-9 audit.

For more information, please contact David Crump with NAHB at 800-368-5242 extension 8491.

NAHB will again provide interested members across the country access to four member meetings via webcast in conjunction with the Fall Board of Direc-tors Meeting. These four meetings will take place on Friday, September 14.

Activities Committee Chaired by Michel Rislov, First National

Bank in SF, the committee is encouraging members to consider becoming more in-volved in the association. They are brain-storming ways to increase involvement op-portunity awareness.

The committee always welcomes input from the full membership on ideas for future networking events (picnic, bowling, chili cook-off, etc.).

The group is also excited to host the 2nd annual bean bag tournament at the Sept. 27 membership mixer at the HBASE office. Thank you to First Bank and Trust for spon-soring this fun event. See page 5 for all the details on this popular mixer. Education Committee

The 2012 Education Committee is chaired by Tom Hines, Frisbee Plumbing, Heating, A/C & Electrical. The Education Committee, with financial support from the Home Builders Care Foundation, begins its 3rd year as the classroom sponsor of the home building/carpentry program at the Sioux Falls Career & Technical Education Academy. HBASE members are encour-aged to attend an open house at the CTE Academy on Thur., Sept. 13 from 5-8pm. The CTE Academy is located at 4700 W Career Cr near the campus of South-east Tech. CTE students will provide tours of the school including the specialized 10,000 sq. ft. home building hanger.

Home Show Committee The 2013 event committee will begin

meeting in September and will be co-chaired by Chuck Wiseman, Complete Contracting, and Michel Rislov, First National Bank in SF.

The dates of the 2013 event have been set for March 8-10 at the Sioux Falls Conven-tion Center. If your business is not in the show yet, please call the HBASE office to get added to the exhibitor wait list.

Being the largest consumer event hosted by the HBASE, this committee is responsible for things such as selling booths, promoting the event, organizing the exhibitors’ reception and recruiting volunteers to work the show.

If you would like to join this committee (which is also broken down into various sub-committees), please call the HBASE office. Local Government Affairs Committee

Preston Mettler, Mettler Construction Co., chairs the HBASE’s Local Government Affairs Committee. The Infrastructure Re-view Advisory Board has approved a new document know as a Subdivision Con-struction Agreement. Over the past year, HBASE developer members have worked with city officials on details associated with this new agreement, including the use of performance security and warranty securi-ty to ensure the completion of public infra-structure in new developments. The city council is expected to review this issue in greater detail, as part of a revised subdivi-sion ordinance later this fall.

Public Relations Committee Chaired by John Parks, Fischer Rounds

& Associates, this group is busy planning the details of the Dueling Pianos fundraising event. All members are encouraged to attend the event at kRav’N on October 23. See page 6 for more details.

The committee is also planning to serve breakfast at The Banquet on Wednesday, October 17. If you or anyone at your company would like to help with this, please call the HBASE office to sign up.

Showcase of Remodeled Homes Committee

This committee, chaired by Jason Seykora, Seykora Remodeling, is excited to announce that there will be 11 projects on the 11th annual event, held October 6 & 7.

The committee encourages the HBASE members to assist them in promoting the event dates on your outdoor marquee, com-pany website and social media sites. Sponsorship Committee

The Sponsorship Committee, chaired by Lisa Schmidt, Schmidt Construction, will soon begin soliciting sponsors for the 2013 major events. Any HBASE member who wishes to sponsor an event is asked to call the HBASE office for a list of opportunities and what the costs and benefits are for each.

The group is also seeking additional members to serve on the committee. If you are interested, please call the HBASE office at 361-8322.
