TONASKET - The Tonasket High School volleyball team has lots of room for improvement over last year’s season, Head Coach Nellie Kirk said.

“We are really working hard on having positive attitudes and good team effort,” Kirk said. “We are practicing with more inten-sity and purpose.”

With only one league win last year, Kirk said the team’s record may not be the best, but the To-nasket girls are some of the best around.

“They are fun to be with and make coaching and playing on the team a good experience,” she said.

Kirk has been coaching since 1971, though she missed a few years in the 1980s and 1990s.

“I have coached different sports at different levels over the years, but volleyball has been the one I have continued to enjoy. I will

continue as long as it is fun for me,” she said. “I think that I always work hard at whatever I do. Get in there and get the job done!”

Kirk is assisted this year by David Kirk, who is coaching the junior varsity team and Tim Cork, who is coaching the c-squad team.

The team has 39 girls this year, a large turnout but Kirk said there have been large turnouts the last couple of years. Among the three teams, there are more freshmen and sophomores over-all but the team has four return-ing seniors: Taylor Ayers, Lucy Gonzales, Jayden Hawkins and Jessica Rhoads.

“Ayers, Hawkins and Rhoads all played a lot last year,” Kirk said. “They each have their strengths, especially with team leadership, which is their top priority this year.”

Among the younger members on the team, Kirk said Devan Utt is returning to varsity as a sopho-

more and that she continues to improve with more experience.

“We are working very hard,” she said. “We will have some

very tough competition this year. These girls are some of the nicest girls and they want to play volley-ball and they want to be better. I

think this group is willing to work hard to find some success.”

Kirk said that all teams have a weakness or two and that it takes

a great deal of athleticism and hard work to cover those areas. She added that the team will be doing the best they can.

TONASKET - The Tonasket High School cross country team knows the price they are going to have to pay to succeed this season and they are willing to pay, Head Coach Bob Thornton said.

Thornton, in his 25th year of coaching and assisted by Dewie Edwards this year, said the team knows what it takes to compete in the Caribou Trail League.

“Cross country is far too hard to not have fun doing it so we try to stay relaxed and have fun but still be competitive when we need to be,” he said. “We will know on Oct. 28 at the dis-trict meet how we are perform-ing because that is when it all counts. Practices are designed to progress throughout the season so hopefully all will be running their best at the end of October.”

The team has 13 high school athletes and four middle school

athletes this year, which Thorn-ton said is a normal number of quality athletes.

“The high school has some new athletes but most either turned out last year or have experience running distance in track last year,’ he said.

There are four returning seniors, Michelle Carlson, Matt Gschiel, Jessica Spear and Pe-ter Williams, and among them, Spear already has experience running at state in both cross country and track.

“Junior Damon Halvorsen ran at state the last two years and is looking good again this year,” Thornton said. “Both Halvorsen and Jack Hickman went to state last spring in track. The rest of the boys team has been run-ning as a pack and are right on Halvorsen’s heels.”

He added that the rest of the girls are pushing Spear in practice and that young team members Kathryn Cleman and Norman Ornelas are running well in practice so far.

Thornton said he doesn’t foresee making any big strat-egy changes this year.

“We will keep eating lots of

ice cream,” he promised. From last season, Thornton

said the highlights were the

team eating lots of ice cream and the smiles on the runners’ faces. Halvorsen bringing home

a medal from the state champi-onship meet last year was also a highlight.

TONASKET - The Tonas-ket High School football team is led by an even dozen returning seniors this year.

The team, coached by Head Coach Jay Hawkins, now in his 10th season with the Tigers, has 50 players this year and 11 of the 12 seniors have played the last three years. Hawkins, assisted by Ryan Pilkinton, Shawn Rader, Jim Swan-

son, Casey Silverthorn and Kevin Mitchell, said his coaching style is to provide a positive experience for all football players.

The returning seniors are Brandon Clark, Justin Dellinger, Brandon Hud-son, Stephen Hulse, Tyler Laurie, Lee Leavell, Keegan McCormick, Corbin Mirick, Corbin Moser, Zach Neal, Dustin Silverthorn and Ty Thornton. Hawkins said that have 10-11 players who have played one or more years at the varsity level

makes this year’s team ex-perienced, which is one of the team’s strengths.

“Many of our returning players gained tremendous experience last year,” he said. “They all improved their game over the course of the 2009 season.”

Of the young athletes on this year’s team, Hawkins said the coaching staff is really happy with the growth of their skills and that many have improved their game since last year. At this early point in the

season, Hawkins said the team will maximize their talent. He stated the team’s strong points as being leadership, mental tough-ness, enthusiasm for the game of football and the fact they really trust one another. The team’s weak point is the need for more speed.

“We are going to game more on defense,” Hawkins said. “We changed to a 3-5-3 defensive scheme.”

He said the highlights of last season, in which the Tigers’ record was 4-5, were improving each week and understanding the importance of ESP: Every Single Play.

TONASKET - The Tonas-ket High School girls’ soccer team is aiming to have a better season this year than they did last year.

In his second year as head coach Darren Collins is as-sisted by Todd Mathews and says he has a laid back coach-ing style. With 22 girls on the team, an average turnout, Collins said the team has a good mix of experience.

“We have six freshmen joining the team,” he said. “Last year there were only

17 players with four seniors leaving us and two exchange students.”

There are five returning seniors this year: Karen Keeton, Shelby Olma, Brenda Ramos, Megan Rawley and Angela Vaughan.

“I have 10 returning play-ers from last year who all play an important part of the team,” Collins said. “I predict our team will have a better season than last year.”

Collins said the main high-light of last year’s season was when the girls beat Brewster, something THS had not done in years.

OROVILLE – With a motto of “No excuses, get the job done” the Oroville Hornet Football team’s goal is to win their division and go to the state playoffs.

Coached by Tam Hutchin-son, now in his eleventh year as head coach, the Hornets finished seven and three last year. Carl Iverson assists Hutchinson, now in his fourth season, with new-comer Rich Hutchins.

There are several return-ing seniors on the Hornet squad including quarter-back Preston Iverson, tight end Charlie Demartino, line backer Tylelr Herrera and fullback Jose Velasco. DTs Ryan Morrison and Tyler Clark and offensive lineman Brett Clough join them.

“We had several outstand-ing players back from last year and these also include running back Nicky Perez,

guard Mark Egerton, defen-sive end Caleb Whiteaker and Michael Lynch,” said Coach Hutchinson.

Newcomers that will make an impact are RB/WR C.J. Mathews and Lineman Ned Mathis, according to the Hornet Coach.

“Several Freshmen have also looked good so far this year. They include WR Tan-ner Smith, OLB Connelly Quick, Center Daniel McK-inney, Tackle Jake Brown, Fullback/LB Jacob Kellogg and QB Luke Kindred,” said Hutchinson.

The coach feels the high-light of last season was win-ning the first six games.

“Our Goal this season is to win our Division and go to State Playoffs.

Our Mottos this year is ‘No excuses, get the job done.’ Our saying is ‘Go The Extra Ten!’ as we add an extra ten to all our exercises, sprints and reps,” Hutchin-son said.

OROVILLE – Oroville Hornet Volleyball is set-ting its sights high and looking for good things to happen this volleyball season.

Coached by Heather Leslie and assisted by her daughter Stancy Nutt, the two will be using en-thusiasm and strategy, positively and confidence in each athlete as keeps to coaching this year’s team.

“She values teamwork and lots of fun,” said Assistant Coach Nutt about the head coach. There are 24 girls turning out this year, which about average for Oroville.

“It is a good number as far as each athlete getting playing time and experience,” said Nutt.

The team has a mixture of experience and sees the three returning se-niors helping to lead the Hornets –they are Lacey Forester, Haley Gerkin and Brittany Buckmiller.

“All of the girls made great improvements in all aspects of the sport and did great things last year and are continuing to ad-vance very well,” said the assistant coach. “We are very optimistic about all of the young team mem-bers this year and very pleased with their prog-ress already this season.” Nutt says she and Leslie are proud to be working with a great group of girls this year and expects a great season overall.

“The team has set their sights high, so we are looking forward to seeing good things,” she said. “The team’s strong points are defense, good lead-ers, positive attitudes, enthusiasm and a strong sense of teamwork. The team is very determined and has a competitive at-titude.”

Last year the Lady Hor-nets had nine wins and seven losses and one of the highlights was their victory over Tonasket for the first time in several years.

OROVILLE – Oroville Hornet Soccer is field-ing a smaller team with a mixture of experience this season.

Coach Laura Kinman, with the aid of Assistant Coach Kristin Sarmiento, says she is taking a hands on approach to teaching the girls the basics of soccer.

Just 14 players turned out this year, which Kin-man says is a small team and one where experience is mixed.

“We don’t have a deep bench and that could be our weakness,” she said. “However, our freshmen look to have more speed and athlet ic abi l i ty…

I expect them to learn quickly.”

There are three seniors returning to the Hornet squad, they are Ashley Glover, Taylor Sarmiento and Catie Arrigoni.

“Catie has improved her overall knowledge for distributing the ball and has better ball handling skills. Taylor has more confidence and the cor-rect timing to come out of the box when need-ed. They are both good, positive leaders of the team,” said Coach Kin-man, about who did ex-ceptionally well last year. Young team members who show promise in-clude Ashley Marcolin, Emily Mills and Sierra Speiker, according to Kin-man.

First year for a full girls teamBy Gary A. DeVonManaging Editor

OROVILLE – After some uncertainty there was going to be a cross country team this year, Oroville will be hitting the ground running with one of its largest teams ever.

Coached by Doug Kee who says he’s been heading up the program for quite a few years, he is assisted by Ryan Hughes a former cross country athlete who ran for Oroville.

There are 16 runners turning out this season for the Hornets, with the team evenly divided between boys and girls. Having even one or two girls in cross country has been a challenge in past years, with eight the Oroville has an official full girls team.

“It’s a young team, with sev-eral freshmen and sophomores, with many of the upper class-men being new to the sport as well,” said Coach Kee.

There is only one return-ing senior and that’s Reinna Quick.

“She ran her sophomore year, but played soccer last year. Catie Arrigoni, another senior, is new to the sport, but did well in track last spring,” Kee said.

The coach points to Connor Hughes and Sierra Speiker to add their experience to the oth-erwise less experienced team, even though Speiker is only a

freshman.“Connor Hughes was last

year’s league champion and Si-erra Spieker was undefeated as an eighth grader,” Kee said.

As far as other young team members that show promise, Kee says at this point everyone does.

“Although many are young and/or new to the sport; they are all working exceptionally hard and have great attitudes. I am looking forward to the first few meets to see how they do in competition,” he said.

Kee says the team’s goal is to qualify as many runners as possible for the state meet.

“As with other individual sports, like track and wres-tling, you can qualify as an in-dividual by placing high in the regional meet. But unlike other sports you can also qualify as a team and take the whole team (top seven runners) to state, including the runners who don’t qualify as individuals,” Kee said.

The coach feels there are several individuals he sees that stand a good chance to qualify for state including Hughes, Sierra Speiker, Arrigoni and Zack Speiker.

“At this point I think both the boys and girls teams stand a good chance to earn a state berth,” he said.

One strong point for the Hornets this year is that for the first time they have a full girls team, which takes five or more runners.

As far as weaknesses go, he said, “To score well as a team

in cross country you need five runners toward the front of the pack. We need to move our top two boys closer to the front of the pack. With the girls, our number four and number five are going to need to pick up the pace and close the gap with the front runners,” Kee said.

The coach sees the highlights of last season as Sierra Speik-er’s undefeated eighth grade season and Hughes running well in the league meet and finishing in first place.
