The Pierre Governors foot-ball squad didn’t have the results they were looking for in 2011.
A year and a lot of hard work later, they are ready to fight back.
The Governors finished the 2011 season with a 3-7 record. The Govs didn’t sulk over the disappointing season and with some help from the school’s strength and conditioning program in the offseason, the Governors are ready to com-pete.
“I think our guys are more confident than they were last season. Our coaches worked hard in getting the strength and conditioning program going and we have a really good core of kids who worked hard during the winter, spring
and summer. I think they are just stronger and that leads to the confidence,” Pierre football coach Joe Kramer said.
The Governors will be led on offense by Alex Gray. The junior signal caller became the c o m m a n d e r of the Pierre huddle after an injury to Jared Neilan in 2011.
Kramer and the Pierre coaching staff kept Gray at quarter-back for the remainder of the season, giving him experi-ence which will pay dividends now.
“Alex got a lot of experience last year, I don’t expect him to play like a junior, I expect him to play like a senior. He’s
shown that already in prac-tice. He’s got a lot of poise and he certainly knows what he’s doing out there. We also have some good players around him so he doesn’t have to do every-thing,” Kramer said.
With Gray staying at quarterback, Neilan became Pierre’s work-horse in the backfield.
N e i l a n departed due to gradua-tion, so Austin Wagner and Matt Svendsen
will lead a talented group of running backs attempting to fill Neilan’s big shoes.
“Austin and Matt are still back there so we still have some pretty good speed. I think we have pretty good depth at
tailback so we should be fine. You don’t replace a guy like Jared Neilan but we have some pretty good kids to fill the gap,” Kramer said.
The key to the Governors’ success in 2012 may be their sheer depth.
Pierre boasts a very deep team thanks to the hard work from the players, giving the coaches an opportunity to keep players fresh on both sides of the ball.
“We don’t have more num-bers than normal but we have more experience. When you have depth you can rotate play-ers who play both ways. I feel like as coaches we have been able to give our seconds a lot more reps in practice as well. I think that will help us in the long run,” Kramer said.
As always, Kramer and his staff are focused on capturing the ESD title. The conference
should be as competitive as ever in 2012.
“I think about how we fair in the ESD and the rest will take care of itself. Brandon Valley and Yankton are two of the top teams in the conference and we open up with one of them,” Kramer said.
The Governors were defeat-ed by Yankton twice in the 2011 season; they began their sea-son with a 43-20 loss in Yankton and ended it with a 27-13 loss to the Bucks in the opening round of the playoffs.
Pierre won’t have to wait long to get a measure of revenge, it hosts Yankton in the season’s opening contest. A victory against the team they struggled with could go a long ways for the Governors.
“We have a lot of motiva-tion with Yankton coming in

The Pierre Lady Govs volleyball squad is hoping that experience pays dividends in the 2012 season.
The Lady Govs are coming off of a tough 2011 campaign in which inexpe-rience and youth played a big part in a 4-18 mark. The youth and inexperience has flipped into a group that suddenly has a lot of experience coming into the 2012 season.
“We have four returning seniors who have quite a bit of experience at the junior varsity and varsity level. We will look for them to be leaders as well as a big junior class. We have 11 return-ing juniors and five or six of those girls got varsity experience as well. We just hope that they take that experience on the court and put it to use,” Pierre vol-leyball coach Kacy Kienholz said.
The Lady Govs return most of their core from a year ago, making the squad hungry for a successful year
after enduring a rough 2011 season.“We hope that we go up from where
we have been the last couple of sea-sons. The girls know what it’s like to lose and they are very hungry to have a winning season. We’re shooting for a positive experience and hopefully they will go out there and perform on game
Nathan [email protected]
Some things change while others stay the same. And that’s the story as the Lady Govs tennis team begins their 2012 campaign this fall.
The girls will return four players with significant varsity experience and develop under new head coach Wade Kippley. Last year’s number one, Eileen Leong, and defending flight six ESD champion Aubrey Wald will lead the way for the Lady Govs; seniors Emily Dix, Kate Wollman and Abby Burke will bring varsity experience in order to hopefully make names for themselves as the season rolls on.
“I haven’t seen them play com-petitively, but coming in I knew they were middle of the road last year,” said Kippley. “But almost all of them worked hard in the summer, and you have to give credit to them. They may not know it yet, but it will pay off down the road here.”
The work put in over the summer by the girls has shown them they could surprise a few people. Many competed throughout the state and were able to see their competition in the ESD as well as state.
“As far as ESD goes, I don’t see another team that could beat us on any given day. That comes from the work put in this summer. This team could do anything in the ESD.”
Surely the players know what Kippley means. Junior Eileen Leong, a clear ESD favorite at flight one, and her doubles partner Kate Wollman will lead the charge for the Lady Govs. The two will more than likely push each other all through the season at the top two flights while teaming up at flight one doubles.
Other singles players will include juniors Samantha Beck, Abby Burke, and Aubrey Wald. The trio has more than five years varsity experience.

nights,” Kienholz said.Rebounding from the 2011
season won’t be an easy task. The ESD Conference is load-ed with talented teams so the
Lady Govs will have to be at their best nearly every night in order to compete for a confer-ence title.
“Every game will be impor-tant for us. The ESD is always a cat fight as to who is going to come out on top. It just comes down to who’s going to show
up to play on a given night,” Kienholz said.
The Lady Govs’ experience won’t be the only factor in a successful season as the play-ers have worked very hard to improve.
Whether it is through camps or individual work, the Lady
Govs already seem ready to begin the season.
“A lot of these girls do club volleyball in the spring and we had a couple of camps this summer. The girls appear to be in good shape already and that tells me they have done some conditioning as well this
summer. We’ll see how much that helps when the season gets going and we start playing games,” Kienholz said.
The Lady Govs will get their first opportunity to prove themselves Friday when they host Douglas. The match begins at 4:30 p.m.

Wald brought home the lone ESD title for the Lady Govs last season; Dix played flight two at one point; and Burke was last year’s flight three contributors.
Also, senior Kelly Brusven, junior Sam Beck and soph-omore Jolee Smith will cer-tainly get their chance at the varsity level this season.
“I can tell these girls have a love of the game that goes beyond results. They love to go out and enjoy their time together on the courts,” added
Kippley.The girls have worked
together to create that enjoy-ment and chemistry which will strengthen their doubles, creating a clear strong point on the team.
Doubles wins and loses tour-naments. A doubles match can be affected by simply how well
two players get along with each other on the court.
The Lady Govs will continue the early season road trip this weekend in Rapid City where they’ll face off against power-houses Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Rapid City Stevens in an invitational beginning Friday afternoon.

The Pierre boys’ golf team could be a work in progress but this young and talented team certainly has the potential to tee off on the competition in 2012.
To begin the year, the Governors will be a bit inex-perienced. Pierre will only feature Willie Welch and Drew Leif as returning varsity players, making the dependence on a potentially great group of younger golfer’s essential.
“The young kids will have to step up because we won’t have that much experience,” Pierre golf coach John Knox said. “Austin Hoss is a seventh-grader who came up and surprised some people. Andrew Van Gerpen is another young player who will begin the year on var-sity.”
The Governors’ youth won’t be the only detri-ment to the beginning of the season. Pierre will also be left without Hillsview Golf Course for the second consecu-tive year. The youth and lack of a practice course could add up to a difficult stretch for the Governors to begin the season.
“Our scores will be high to begin the year. It’s just too early and most of the kids didn’t play a lot this summer. There’s a lot of work to be done and it’s tough with only four days of practice before qualify-ing. It’s tough that we don’t have our course but we will just need to depend on the parents to help us get the kids to a few courses,” Knox said.
One constant that the Governors can depend on during all parts of the season is Welch. Welch is a two-time all-conference and all-state honoree and is poised to compete for a state title in his senior cam-paign.
“Our leader this year will probably be Willie; he’s
Wade [email protected]
The Pierre Governors will feature a new coach in 2012, but continuity will be a theme for the upcoming season.
The Govs feature six returning starters and six more returning letter winners to comprise an expe-rienced team on the field. The Governors should also not expect to go through any growing pains with Brad Cruse. Cruse has been involved with the soccer program for six years, so his personnel are nothing
new to him.“It will be advanta-
geous to know the kids but one of the keys will be figuring out how to get them to work togeth-er on the field. We will have to find the right combination of players to work in the system we will run,” Cruse said.
Cruse isn’t the only one familiar with the players; they each know each other as well. The team is comprised of four seniors and 11
juniors, many of which have been playing together for years.
“We have a good base to begin with. We have guys who have varsity experience and we have a few seniors with a very large junior class. I think things will come together because these guys have played together for a long time,” Cruse said.
Pierre will be led by senior goaltender Andrew Brown, who Cruse says could be one of the state’s top goalies.
Outside of Brown, the Governors feature tal-ented players Ethan Case, Chaz Williams and Steve Gordon.
The Governors will also utilize strikers Cougar Sanchez and Cody Kuehl, each of which is expected to be playmakers.
Despite the individual talent, Cruse is looking for a collective effort from his team to accomplish their

Perhaps the hidden gem of the upcoming fall sports season will be the Lady Govs soccer team.
The girls will bring plenty of depth, experience and fire power to the table as they look to get back to where they were only a few seasons back.
One thing’s for certain, and that would be that veteran coach Sidney Zanin – who has led multiple teams to title games – will be having his players peak at the right time.
“Right now everything is right. We have more depth and are a year older,” said Zanin. “Going to a state tournament like last season, we are sure
to learn something from that, and we’ll be there.”
That depth and experience mentioned twice already has to be the first thing that pops off the Lady Govs roster. The team has 16, yes 16, players returning with solid
varsity experience and plenty of up-and-coming play-ers ready to learn.
Names like Anna Bondy, Katie Berg and Sydney Palmer highlight the roster of the Lady Govs.
Bondy was an all-state forward last season and is among the group of five seniors who will be expected to lead right from the beginning. Berg’s speed and athleticism will be a part of the potent defense the girls are expected to have.
Palmer, a sophomore, is entering only her second season as a goalie. Even though goalie is the most important position on the pitch, Palmer has been a fast learner and is expected to grow even more into the position.
“She has done fantastic,” added Zanin. “After last season, I was afraid she didn’t want to play, but I guess she’s willing to go through it again.”
The Lady Govs and fans, however, are hoping that Palmer won’t have to save them all too often. The team’s midfield and defense are expected to be among the best, and forwards will try to put games out of reach early.
The midfield will be held down by seniors Bailey

Govs golf hoping inexperience doesn’t land them in the rough
probably the best returning player we have. I think Willie can be a contender this year. He came out here after play-ing baseball all summer and played great. He’s just got a lot of natural talent. I think
he’s got a chance to easily be in the top five of the state. He seems to be more relaxed this year and I think he will do well,” Knox said.
The Governors will also rely on senior Drew Leif and junior Cash Anderson to help Welch stabilize the young unit during the course of the 2012 season.
The Governors will also have strength in number to their advantage. The pro-gram has blossomed into one with nearly 30 golfers, giving Knox and assistant coach Guy Hunter the chal-lenge of developing the games of all of them.
“With 30 kids out there is a lot of talent out there.
We just haven’t had a lot of time with them but we will continue to work with them and help them get better,” Knox said.
The Governors began their 2012 season with a sixth-place finish at the West River Invite. They will con-tinue their season Friday at the Huron Invitational.

In Zanin’s mind it’s pretty clear what will stand out about these girls.
“Our strength will be our teamwork. We are solid all the way around, and their chemistry will come from last season. Our main leaders will be our
seniors. They will be the model for everyone coming in and learning.”
The season started the past weekend as the Lady Govs split a pair of games with R.C. Central and S.F. Washington at Hilger’s Gulch.
They will continue their 2012 cam-paign in Brookings and Watertown next weekend.

goals.“One of our themes is that we will
play as 11. One player can’t beat 11 but 11 can beat 11. That’s the message we are trying to send,” Cruse said.
One thing that the team will need to band together to do is score goals. The governors found themselves in the midst of many close games in 2011 but fell short due to offensive woes.
“We struggled to put the ball in the net last season. We will have a defense that will be difficult to deal with and it will be a matter of transitioning to the offensive end,” Cruse said.
With a loaded schedule, scoring goals may not be easy for the Governors. Pierre is looking for a fast start to the year, despite some tough competition to
start the season.“We need to get off on the right foot
this particular year. Every game will be important for us and we have some tough stretches,” Cruse said.
To help them get off to a fast start, Cruse is hoping the fans of Pierre can establish a home field advantage.
“We’d love to see a lot of green and white on the sideline. We want more and more support for our guys and we want to invite everyone out to watch some soccer. These guys have worked very hard so it’d be good to see some support for them,” Cruse said.
The Governors have already kicked off their season, suffering a pair of defeats in contests against Rapid City Central and Sioux Falls Washington. The Govs will be in action again Friday when they travel to Brookings and cap off their road trip Saturday in Watertown.

The Pierre Lady Govs com-petitive cheer team is poised to show just how far the pro-gram has come during the 2012 season.
The Lady Govs are coming off of a season in which they showed great strides in hopes of joining the state’s elite. They finished first in the stunting/non-tumbling competition at the state meet. Now, the Lady Govs are prepared to take their program to the next level.
“We did a lot of recruiting last year and got a lot of gym-
nasts, we’ve added to that this year. I only have two seniors this year so I have a fairly young team. The returning girls are very good though and the young ones have worked very hard to prepare. I think we’re ready for our first meet,” Pierre competitive cheer coach Jill Caauwe said.
The Lady Govs will have a huge pair of shoes to fill though. Cheyna Lodge led the way for the Lady Govs last year and her departure after graduation will be one of the areas of concern for the Lady Govs. Lodge was fantastic for Pierre but Caauwe thinks they
may have the talent to fill the void.
“Cheyna Lodge left our team and she was incredible. We have a seventh-grader in Sophie Bullard coming up, she’s a great gymnast and she’s very determined. She could be a good replacement for Cheyna,” Caauwe said.
The Lady Govs will have several opportunities over the course of the season to prove their worth but no meet may be more important than the Pierre Invitational. The Sept. 1 meet is the lone meet that Pierre will host in 2012, giv-ing them one opportunity to
impress their home fans.“I’m very excited that the
Sept. 1 meet is our third week of the year. It gives us two meets in which we can mess up and fix things,” Caauwe said. “Hopefully my girls won’t be tired. I think they will be excited to show off the routine for the first time this season.”
The Pierre Invitational is in the midst of a tough stretch of three competitions in a week for the Lady Govs but once they bypass that stretch they should be ready to contend.
The Lady Govs took a lot of steps in becoming a better team including visiting Kansas
State University to get a taste at cheerleading at the next level.
“We went to Kansas State University for a camp this summer. They got to see cheer-leading at the college level and that really inspired them to work harder,” Caauwe said. “We have a goal as to who we want to beat and we got close to it this year. The girls really want to win this year and they are all pushing each other.”
The Lady Govs will see their first action Saturday when they take part in the Aberdeen Invite. The Aberdeen Invite begins at 11 a.m.

Pierre’s cross country program has certainly taken a turn for the bet-ter in recent years and this could be the year that improvement translates into a state championship.
Barring injury, the Pierre Governors and Lady Govs cross coun-try teams should both have the tools necessary for success.
The Lady Govs have as good of a chance at taking home champion-ship glory as anyone. They are led by a two-time state champion in track, Rachel Propst. As a freshman, Propst finished 12th at the state meet. A year later, the Lady Govs are hoping their star becomes a state champion.
“Rachel really has a shot to be a state champion this year. When you have someone that good, you really have a chance to win a state title,” assistant coach Jim Keyes said.
Propst isn’t alone in terms of talent-ed runners on the Lady Govs roster. They also feature returning placers in Aspen Iverson (18th) and Hannah Shaffer (25th).
The Lady Govs also figure to get contributions from several others
such as Allison Meintsma, Cortney Brandt and Libby Gortmaker along with others.
All of that talent translates into what looks to be a championship or bust attitude for this deep team.
“The girls return everybody from a team that finished fourth last year. We feel that we can compete for con-ference and state title. More impor-tantly, the kids feel that they can win,” cross country head coach Keith Christensen said.
The Lady Govs may have the spot-light on them but the Governors are no slouches either. The Govs return two senior placers in Matt Monfore (18th) and Steven Gordon (23rd). Monfore and Gordon aren’t the lone seniors on the team. The Governors also fea-ture senior leadership from Weston Christensen and Caleb Mckinley.
“We have four senior guys; you win titles with seniors being your leaders. We have that with Steven, Weston and Matt. We’ve waited to be senior laden like this for years. We’re pretty excit-ed about the season,” Christensen said.
The Governors squad won’t only

The Pierre Lady Govs competitive dance program continues to grow and Tia Kafka hopes to take it to the next level.
Kafka is the new leader of the dance program that is still relatively young in the state’s capital. She brings experience and is looking forward to teach the Lady Govs what she’s learned over the years.
“I’ve been dancing for a good 25 years and it’s my third year coaching. Dance has been a huge part of my life and it’s very important to me,” Kafka said.
Kafka certainly isn’t going to go through the motions in her first sea-son in Pierre.
She looks to introduce the Lady Govs to several new elements in the
sport to ensure a stellar season.“In my first year here I’m going
to try to do new and different things with the girls. We’ll use fresh music that will be refreshing to the judges.
We’re also trying to be more unique in our formations to gain more points with the judges,” Kafka said.
The Lady Govs aren’t looked at as one of the state’s best teams from an outsid-er’s view. Kafka sees this as an advantage and is eager to see her team prove the doubt-ers wrong.
“Every single day the girls are getting better and stron-ger. They’re always improving with their skills. We are kind of
the underdogs, which is a good place for us to be. We will really impress the people who don’t have high expecta-tions for us,” Kafka said.

The Lady Govs will be ready to surprise thanks to all of the hard work they put in during the offseason.
Kafka emphasizes that there wasn’t much of an offseason for the team, which should be a major positive.
“The girls have worked really hard. They’ve been doing open gyms and we had a camp at the beginning of the season to learn choreography. The
captains have also taken a lot of ini-tiative to help the girls with anything they need help with,” Kafka said.

be dominated by seniors. Freshman Jebben Keyes is a returning letter winner who leads a talented group of younger Governors.
Youth is a common theme for both the Lady Govs and the Governors, making the competition within the team greater.
“It’s our job to send the seven best
of each gender to state. We are not age based, we want the older kids but your age isn’t a factor in this sport. The kids have bought into the competitive-ness of the program and this is a great time to be a Governor or Lady Gov,” Christensen said.
The competitiveness has translated into one of the better off seasons the cross country program has seen in some time. Both teams put in hun-dreds of miles on the ground this summer, which may be the root of
their success in 2012.“We took 11 kids to camp this year,
when coach Keyes and I first started we didn’t have nearly that many. That will make a big difference for us this year. The kids from years ago weren’t doing what our current kids are doing now,” Christensen said.
The Governors and the Lady Govs will get their first chance to show how much the hard work has paid off when they host the Pierre Invitational on Friday.

Stanley County will put a lot of fresh faces on the field for their 2012 football campaign.
Fortunately several of those will be experienced players from the JV ranks.
“We actually lost quite a bit from last year,” coach Matt Jensen said adding, “Basically we have a whole new set of starters on offense.”
The good news is that Buffaloes will have some speed across the field – an essential component to remaining competitive in the nine-man game.
The bad news is that the speedier team is also a small-er team.
But there are ways to minimize that dis-advantage.
“We’re going to have to play aggres-sive defensively and have to fly around if we want to get bet-ter,” Jensen said.
The Buffaloes were 2-6 last year. Their district and schedule doesn’t get any easier this year as they face Miller, Herreid/Selby, Eureka/Bowdle and Sully Buttes.
They’ll also see long-time rival Philip and last year’s Class 9A runner-up Wall.
“Our schedule is tough up and down, but I think that’s good for us. Every week when you go out and play it’s a test. I like the way our schedule is,” Jensen said.
The Buffaloes will rely on some key contributors at the skill positions. Dan Etzkorn will see time at running back, Herman Fennell at quarterback and Kevin Anderson and Brady Washechek at wide receiver.
The Buffaloes will be a little lean on the offensive line, but look for sig-
nificant contributions from Chris Bonhorst, Cade Larson and Wyatt Green.
Tyson O’Daniel will cap the line at tight end.
“The one thing that I love about our offense right now is that we’re well bal-anced,” Jensen said.
Hopefully some of that offensive mojo can translate onto the flip side of the ball and stabilize a work-in-progress defense.
“Last year we gave up over 28 points a game and that’s just not acceptable. I know nine-man is pretty high scoring
and fast paced, but you still want to get out there and put up as many zeroes as you can each quar-ter,” Jensen said.
However, the Buffaloes’ six losses last year were to teams that were a combined 43-18.
It’s inevitable to give up a few crooked numbers against that compe-tition.
The Buffaloes will suit up around
35 this year, many of whom will be asked to contribute both offensively and defensively.
“Like most nine man teams, half to three quarters of our guys are going to play the majority of the game, but we do have a pretty nice set rotation and we’re going to be able to get some of those bigger linemen out of the game,” Jensen said.
If the Buffaloes can find their groove, improve every week and stay healthy, there’s no reason they can’t play up to their competition and com-pete.
Tradition at Ole Williamson Field bears that fact out. The Buffaloes open their season August 31 in Miller. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

The Stanley County Lady Buffs are looking for improved team chemistry to translate into more wins in the 2012 season.
The Lady Buffs are coming off of a tough 2011 campaign but coach Kyle Mundt is hoping her players come together as a team in during the 2012 season.
“My goal this year is to get the team concept back. We will have to play as a team and work together to do all of the little things,” Mundt said. “Our goal is to have a better record than last year. To do that, we will have to take things game by game and do all of the little things on the court.”
The Lady Buffs will be led by seniors Nicole Smith and Katie Lerhkamp along with junior Hailey Norman. Each has impressed in the preseason and could take the Lady Buffs to the next level in 2012.
“Nicole and Katie are our seniors and they have been wonderful lead-ers so far. Hailey will be our standout in the middle as well. They have all stepped up and they know what they need to do to get the job done,” Mundt said.

The Stanley County Buffaloes will continue to build their cross country program in 2012 under new coach Erin Titze.
The long-distance striders for Stanley County will compete in eight invitational events leading up to the region tournament in early October.
The team is small, six boys and one girl, and participants range from sixth to eleventh grade. Coach Titze hopes the mix of experience and youthful exuberance will mesh into a well-bal-anced team.
“Kids that have run before and have been in the competitive area of a cross country race are going to take those younger kids under their wings and help them. They really watch out for each other,” Titze said.
Preparations for the first meet are well underway. Titze is building the team’s stamina with some two to three mile runs in the opening week. She’ll slowly increase that distance to build
them up mentally and physically, but she’s careful not to push them too hard too early.
“We’ll look to go farther next week. Some of them ran this summer and some of them didn’t, so I don’t want to scare any of them away,” Titze said.
That’s solid strategy. Besides, those middle schoolers on the team have their whole careers to run up hill to the Verendrye monument. No use burning them out early.
Titze will incorporate her experi-ences as a cross country runner into her coaching. Her team will be wise to heed her advice, including what it takes to be a successful long-distance competitor.
“From my experience as a cross country runner, I would have to say that they’ll have to know how to run when they get tired. Cross country is a long race and you have to be able to keep your stamina up and you also have to be able to keep up your strength,” Titze said.

Expectations this year are unclear. Competing hard as individuals and as a team are a given, but success won’t necessarily be measured in state quali-fiers and team points at meets.
“I know it’s still very much a growing program and this year, being my first year, I really want to go out and give it my all and succeed. I’m learning from them as much as they’re learning from me,” Titze said.
That’s a great attitude to have with a
young team and growing program. But the first-year coach will bring more than attitude to the team.
“I’m going to give them stuff that will ultimately help them succeed and build and have a great district and region and state too,” Titze said.
Class A cross country is divided statewide into five regions. The top three teams and top 20 individual quali-fiers will advance to the state meet held in Huron on October 20. How Stanley County will shake out two months from now, we’ll have to wait and see.

The Lady Buffs have talent on the 2012 squad but it will be a difficult task replacing their departing players.
The Lady Buffs will be with-out a group of seniors that included all-conference selec-tion Shelby Gienger in 2012, leaving a tremendous void on the team.
We have some shoes to fill but I think we have the tal-ent to do that. We just have to work and grow together as a
team,” Mundt said.Another reason for opti-
mism in Stanley County is the fact that the Lady Buffs may be more acclimated to Mundt as their coach.
With Mundt entering her second season as head coach, the Lady Buffs are now famil-iar with her coaching style and what she expect from her team.
“I think the girls are get-ting more used to my coaching style. There is still some fine tuning that we need to do so everybody is on the same page. Once we get our teams desig-
nated and the season starts we should be in that groove. Hopefully things go the way we want them to,” Mundt said.
The Lady Buffs’ top area of concern may simply be the size of the team. Stanley County doesn’t feature a lot of height, which may be a hurdle for the team, but Mundt is hoping her team can overcome that.
“Height will be an issue for us against taller teams; we will need to overcome that. I see the team concept more than we did last year though and I think that chemistry will
really help us,” Mundt said. The Lady Buffs make their
season debut Saturday when
they take on Winner. The contest begins at 6:30 p.m. at Parkview Gym in Fort Pierre.

Sulley Buttes Football & Volleyball stories
By Chris [email protected]
Call it a youth movement this year in Sully County as the Chargers look to reload and rebuild their perenni-ally strong program.
The Chargers went 7-2 last year, largely behind the play of six YTC All-Conference players – all seniors. That’s a lot of talent to lose at the nine-man level.
“We lost a lot of key players, so we’re young and have only two seniors,” coach Mark Senftner said. “We’re doing a lot of learning and a lot of teach-ing right now.”
The Chargers lost Herman K l e i n s a s s e r , Jordan and Jalen Lamb, Conner Uhlir and others to graduation last year. Those are some big shoes for the current crop of underclassmen to fill.
“We played a lot of juniors and seniors the past two years, so we’re going to have some freshman and sophomores on the field for us this year. That’s a big change for us,” Senftner said.
But with change also comes oppor-tunity.
“We’ve always had a lot of return-ing letter winners and we don’t have that many this year, but we’re excited and we hope our kids are excited about the opportunity to step in and play,” Senftner said.
The Chargers will evaluate every position on both sides of the ball and special teams this year to see where each athlete will have the most impact. That includes a healthy pre-view of several underclassmen.
Another consequence of youth is the physical ability of the athletes. Generally, younger players lack size and speed – two critical components
of the nine-man game. However, if the Chargers can
scheme for this, stay healthy and pick up each other’s slack during the learning process, they’ll stay com-petitive.
“A big key to us will be the back-ups. With only two seniors and 23 players, everybody on our team is almost a backup,” Senftner said.
The 9B Chargers will face a num-ber of familiar foes this season, all of which will hale from the 9A or 9AA ranks.
Every game is big, but diehard Charger fans are already cir-cling October 5 at Potter County and October 12 against Herreid/Selby on their calendars. Their opponents are doing the same.
Do you really think Potter County has forgotten Connor Uhlir’s 25-yard pass to Herman Kleinsasser as time expired last year?
Not to mention giving up a 21-8 lead in the loss? I bet Tate Nafziger hasn’t.
Or what about the Chargers giving up a 10-point fourth quarter lead to Herreid/Selby last year for their first loss?
These grudge matches are what makes regional nine-man football a Friday night must-see.
The Chargers will also face a revamped Miller team that will play some quality ball as well as Eureka/Bowdle who always comes to play.
The Chargers won’t face anyone in their district before the playoffs, but they’ll be well tested.
The Chargers will open their 2012 season against familiar foe, the McLaughlin Midgets.
The Chargers defeated the Midgets in last year’s opener 62-12. Kickoff this year is slated for 7 p.m. CST in McLaughlin.

Good things are on the horizon for the 2012 Sully Buttes Lady Chargers volleyball squad.
The experienced Lady Chargers look to build on last year’s 13-10 record as coach Randy Pool returns five seniors and a mix of underclassmen.
“I’ve got seven of the eight girls planned into my rotation that played a lot of volleyball last year. I’m return-ing four hitters and one of my setters is back along with two girls that play back row defense,” Pool said.
The Lady Chargers will run a one-setter offense. Kayla Nelson is slotted to play this key position and run the offense.
Look for Karlea Stahl to emerge as the dominant hitter on the front line and Dakota Feller to solidify the middle. Macey Chambers and Carly Jost are also key hitters who’ll factor into the team’s offense. Chambers also led the team last year with 54 aces.
The Lady Chargers are shaping up to be a solid offensive team, but their growth on the defensive side may make or break their season.
“I told them I'm not worried about the offense, you guys are athletes, so the offense will take care of itself. But we are going to concentrate on defense and work on making sure that we're passing the ball correctly and that we are serve/receiving the ball correctly.”
If the Lady Chargers can find that defensive harmony, they can be a tough team in a very good district.
“I kind of expect our district to be kind of competitive. I think Faulkton and Highmore/Harrold will both put good teams on the court this year,” Pool said.
The Lady Chargers’ goal is to win the district. If that happens, they’ll likely face a team that knocked them out of the region last year in Herreid/
Selby. “We took them down to the wire
last year in the region tournament, so I told the girls the road to the state tournament probably goes through Herreid/Selby,” Pool said.
Which doesn’t necessarily worry Pool given the faith he has in his ath-letes.
“They come with the mentality that when they lace their shoes up and get on the court they don’t like to lose. They compete hard and give you 110 percent,” Pool said.
Effort alone can take a team a long way, but it doesn’t always translate into a trip to the postseason unless it’s coupled with improvement week to week.
“We’re going to take baby steps and our goals is to by the end of the season be playing our best volleyball and get a chance to go to the state tourna-ment,” Pool said.
There’s a good chance that will hap-pen. The majority of girls out this year are multi-sport athletes who also suc-ceed academically.
“They’re good students so they're smart kids and that makes for good athletes. If you are a smart student you'll be a smart athlete,” Pool said.
As an added bonus most are friends and hang out together off the court, all key ingredients for a winning recipe.
The Lady Chargers will open their season in Gettysburg on Saturday.

The Highmore-Harrold Pirates finished the 2011 season on the gridiron with a 3-5 mark, a record in which they are looking to improve upon in 2012.
The Pirates came out of the gates with a big 6-0 victory against Ipswich in 2011 but a loss to Sully Buttes in week two of the season sparked a stretch in which the Pirates lost four-of-five games.
The Pirates feature an experience group on their roster in 2012, with five seniors and seven juniors, a number which may pay dividends in nine-man football. The Pirates will hope history repeats it-self when they take on Ipswich to begin the season on Friday.
The Highmore Harrold volleyball team includes — Front row — Mariah Domke, from left, Tracy Hague, Chancey Feller, McKenzee Zilverberg, Lizzy Buch-holz, Courtney Keller and Josey Aasby.Second row — Tierney Hamlin, from left, Kacie McCauley, Tyann Hamlin, Sydney Cowan, Michaela Rinehart and Stephanie Huber.Third row — Autumn Reed, Makayla Kroeplin, Dani McCauley, Desi Moser and Brittany Hinkle.(Submitted photo)
The Highmore-Harrold Lady Pi-rates had an up-and-down season in 2011, leading to a record of 12-15 and a first-round exit at the hands of Faulkton in the district tournament.
The Lady Pirates, coached by Mary Wortman, will be looking to improve on that result in 2012 with many of their young players gaining valuable experience in 2011.
The Lady Pirates will have to find a way to replace the departing Rachel Day but returners such a senior Courtney Keller and junior Kacie McCauley should ensure a successful year for the Lady Pirates in 2012.

The fall sports season is finally nearing its dawning. Anticipation and expectations are sky high for a few local teams with a few players looking to further their fantas-tic careers in 2012. Games and hopefully championships will ultimately be won by a team effort but here’s a look at 12 of the local athletes poised for success in 2012.
12. Dan Etzkorn Stanley County foot-ball: The Buffaloes featured a two-headed monster at running back in 2011, with Cody LaCompte and Austin Lopour carrying the Buffs offense. Both standouts graduated, meaning Etzkorn will get the brunt of the carries. Etzkorn had some play-ing time spelling LaCompte and Lopour in 2011. Now he will take over the load for the Buffaloes.
11. Andrew Brown, Pierre soc-cer: The Pierre Governors soccer squad will be defensive oriented, meaning the stock of their goal-tender is through the roof. Brown will be protecting the net for Pierre again in 2012 and has the potential to be one of the state’s top goalies.
10. Steven Gordon, Pierre cross coun-try and soccer: Gordon is a rarity in today’s sports landscape. Sure, many play multiple sports but few do two at once. Gordon not only placed at the state cross country meet in 2011 but is also a key starter on the soc-cer team. Expect the senior to make noise in both sports this fall.
9. Herman Fennell, Stanley County football: After showing a lot of potential in certain situations during the 2012 season, Fennell takes the reigns of the Buffaloes offense in 2012. He certainly proved that his arm can make plays in 2011, now he will try to do it on a full-time basis.
8. Matt Monfore, Pierre cross country: Monfore will be the leader of the Pierre Governors cross country squad. He’s com-ing off of an 18th-place finish in his junior year. Now in his senior season, Monfore is expecting to help the Govs place along with seniors Steven Gordon and Weston Christensen.
7. Katie Berg, Pierre soccer: Berg is the reigning team MVP of the Lady Govs squad and there’s no reason to believe she
won’t duplicate that result in 2012. Berg will certainly play a pivotal role in any suc-cess the Lady Govs have this season.
6. Kaitlyn Severyn, Pierre volleyball: Severyn enters her junior season as one of the players poised to return the Lady Govs to prominence. Severyn was named to the all-ESD team as a sophomore in 2011.
5. Austin Wagner/Matt Svendsen, Pierre football: Replacing Jared Neilan will be no easy task for the Governors. The departing running back was invaluable to the Govs but Wagner and Svendsen will lead the group of running backs looking to
give Pierre the same production in the backfield.
4. Willie Welch, Pierre golf: Pierre features an inexperienced team on the links this fall but that won’t hold Welch back in his senior season. Welch is a two-time all ESD and all-state golfer. He should get his three-peat in both this season and he may even com-pete for a state title in the process.
3. Anna Bondy, Pierre soccer: Bondy is one of the most talented players on a Pierre soccer squad that has very high expectations in 2012. The 2010 and 2011 all-state select will likely be making many more plays over the course of the 2012 sea-son to cap off her career in Pierre.
2. Alex Gray, Pierre football: The spot-light will certainly be shining on Pierre’s junior signal caller in 2012. Gray took over at quarterback for Pierre during the 2011 season and showed flashes of greatness. With experience under his belt, Gray could take his game to the next level in 2012.
1. Rachel Propst, Pierre cross country: Propst is already a two-time state cham-pion in track but she’s looking to add to her personal championship collection. The sophomore leads a championship-contend-ing Lady Govs team and don’t be surprised if she leads them to the promise land by claiming a state title for herself.
There are many athletes not listed who could wind up paying huge dividends for their teams and communities this fall.
With many teams loaded with talent, it should certainly be a memorable fall.

Clockwise from left — Pierre’s Kaitlyn Severyn will be one of the leaders of a Lady Gov volleyball team looking for a big year in 2012.
In his first full year as the team’s signal caller, Alex Gray is poised to have a great year along with the rest of the Governors.
Eileen Leong will once again lead the Lady Govs tennis team in their first year with Wade Kippley in charge.
The Stanley County Lady Buffs will be led by junior Hailey Norman (right). The Lady Buffs lost a lot of talent from a year ago but Norman and the rest of the Lady Buffs are looking to impress in 2012.
