From Pastor DotyFrom Pastor DotyFrom Pastor DotyFrom Pastor Doty Since Pastor Doty will be joining us soon I thought it would be a good idea to start to get to know him. In an effort to get to know him I sent him some questions. Here is what he has shared with us: Here's a little something about myself that should answer some of your questions.

I was born and grew up in Independence, Missouri (so you are doomed to hear a lot of Mark

Twain quotes in my sermons). I have a brother and two sisters and 24 first cousins on my

mother's side. I graduated from the University of Texas in Austin (go Horns!). It was during college that I felt

called to the ministry. I went one year to Austin Presbyterian Seminary then to Harvard Divinity School. After

graduating from Harvard I went to graduate school at Yale and then spent eight years in secondary education

before becoming a Presbyterian minister in 1984.

I have served churches in Independence, Missouri; in Leavenworth, Kansas; and in Middletown, Ohio. I have

two children by my first marriage, Rose and Grace, and two stepchildren, Will and Cassidy, both of whom are in

college in Ohio. My wife, Christina, is working on a graduate degree in art at Bradley University in Peoria, where

we live.

It is difficult to pick out of all the things we ministers do just one or two favorites, but I suppose if I had to they

would be preaching, teaching, and involvement in the community. I am looking forward to meeting all of you

soon and serving as your transitional minister while you find your new installed pastor.

Tim Doty

MUSICAL NOTESMUSICAL NOTESMUSICAL NOTESMUSICAL NOTES

Every September I am approached by several people after service who tell me that they are so glad the Choir is back. Well, frankly, it is good to be back singing and leading our small group of dedicated members in the musical praises to our Lord. Unfortunately, it seems to me, there are not enough members of our congregation who believe that having a choir is important to the life of our Church enough to join us in this celebration. With that in mind, let me point out a few thoughts that others have said about what a Choir is and why it is important to the Church.

1. “A choir is a group of church members who sing songs. Who practice so that they may lead the congregation in singing praises to God”

2. “Singing in the church choir is one way to prepare the hearts of the people for the message” 3. “The choir uses music to appeal to the general public” 4. “Singing in the choir is a way of using the voice God gave you to praise Him” 5. “Singing in the choir is a way of preaching The Word of God in a way that’s not as boring as just saying it”

Please consider joining our choir for practice on Thursday evenings at 7:00 and before Service on Sunday mornings at 9:30. (Part time singers accepted). This is your Church. This is your Choir This is your opportunity for “pay back” to God George

Kid’s KingdomKid’s KingdomKid’s KingdomKid’s Kingdom I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who attended the Kid’s Kingdom breakfast! It was great to see so many faces there. Also a huge thank you to everyone who helped with the breakfast! We could not have done it without you! Because of you we were able to raise $148! The breakfast was a great way for the kids to start learning about mission and service. This month we will continue to learn about different missions and missionaries from around the world and work on incorporating more service into our lives.

Thank you, Olivia Melton

Helping Others Devotional for Kids Read: Luke 10: 25-37

We read in this story of the Good Samaritan, how a man was badly hurt, and though some people came his way, they did not stop to help. Only the Samaritan stopped to help and take care of the injured man. Who do you think pleased God? Do we stop to help someone that has been hurt, or just needing a helping hand? Sometimes when somebody is in need, it’s often at a time that is not good for us to stop and help the person out. We need to remember that this person is more important than what we may want to do. It pleases God when we put aside our own interests for the interests of others. Who knows, we may be the one in need of help one day! © By M.S.Lowndes Remind the people to respect the government and be law-abiding, always ready to lend a helping hand. No insults, no fights. God's people should be bighearted and courteous. - Titus 3: 1-2 (Message)

Help me, Lord, to stop and see The one that needs my help No matter how busy I may be, I pray I can help them out.

Iron Sharpens IronIron Sharpens IronIron Sharpens IronIron Sharpens Iron

“As Iron sharpens Iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 Devotional for Men

On Track - 1 Chronicles 23:24–32 Recommended Reading: Psalm 95:1–11; Matthew 6:5–15; Colossians 4:2–4 What if every driver decided to ignore the center yellow lines? Smash-ups would rival apocalyptic visions. Those colored splotches in the roadway keep us on track. They keep us safe. In our spiritual journey, praise and thanksgiving are like a yellow line, keeping our hearts on track. But it doesn’t take much to veer off course, does it? Think about the Levites. They were set apart to offer thanks and praise to God every morning and every night, day in and day out, in a never-ending cycle (see 1 Chronicles 23:30). It was their job. Forced “thank yous.” Praise, praise, praise.

8

Men’s Devotional Continued Imagine the temptations inherent in this routine. Did easy-to-repeat prayers take the place of petitions motivated by full hearts and genuine gratitude? Did their minds wander as the words bubbled out? “Hear me, O God. Here we go again.” We’ve all heard of the doctor who’s in terrible physical condition or the plumber whose house has leaky pipes. When you do something for a living, as these people do, it’s sometimes hard to stay motivated to keep your own life in order. This is what it may have been like for the Levites as well. Praise and thanks are key ingredients in a healthy relationship with God. We need them as much as we need fresh air. Praise isn’t just an outward gesture; it reveals what’s inside us—the attitude we have toward God. When we offer meaningful thanks, we acknowledge that God’s goodness deserves our recognition and awe. Every gift comes from his hand. Nothing we’ve done grants us the sun’s bright rising or peaceful slumber at night—it all comes from God’s good hand. How do we make our delight in God genuine and true every day? Unlike the Levites, God doesn’t demand that we follow certain daily requirements. Maybe that makes the routine more difficult. We are responsible for taking the time to bow before him and offer our praise and thanks. When we skip this routine, we become like those drivers who disregard the center line—a potential accident waiting to happen. But when we take the time to regularly focus on and praise the God who loves us, he helps us to stay on track.

To Take Away

• Spiritually, would you describe yourself as “on track” or as “an accident waiting to happen”? Why?

• Why does God want you to praise him?

• List several things in your life for which you can praise and thank God. How can you keep your prayers of praise and thanksgiving fresh?

Devotional for Women Your Word Is A Lamp Read: Psalm 119: 97-114 "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (V. 105) God's word is certainly a lamp to our feet, lighting up our way. The Psalmist talks about the wicked laying a snare for him, but he will not stray from God's word. No matter what we face, we need to keep onin God's word and not depart from it. (V: 110) It is God's word that brings light to our darkness. Through God's word we gain more understanding and insight. As we meditate on God's word - hiding it in our hearts - we can receive God's wisdom. God will often speak to us as we meditate on His word and listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to us. We can't just read God's word alone. We need to allow it to penetrate deep down into our inmost being. This is where it can really make a difference and bring about the change we so desire. As we learn to memorize scripture, we find that it's a powerful weapon against the enemy – 'The sword of the Spirit'. I know how hard it is to memorize scripture, but I also know how important it is to hide God's word in my heart. We can just start with one verse - one is better than none! You never know, you could surprise yourself, and be able to learn several. Something that may help is getting scripture on CD/MP3 so you can listen to it as you go about your day. It's great for the kids as well. I was so amazed at my eldest son when he was only 8 years old. They had to memorize scripture at Sunday school and he could memorize them. I was so impressed and wished my mind were as sharp!! So, my challenge for us today, is to memorize just one scripture. Maybe one each week! © By M.S.Lowndes The entrance and unfolding of Your words give light; their unfolding gives understanding (discernment and comprehension) to the simple. ~ Psalm 119: 130

Lord, I pray that I can hide Your word within my heart

For when I meditate on your word, It brings light into the dark.

Geneseo Food PantryGeneseo Food PantryGeneseo Food PantryGeneseo Food Pantry October 2013 Church Newsletter

With the weather starting to cool off, light-weight jackets, long sleeved shirts and jeans are now in demand. With Facebook pages for selling clothing and the opening of a Goodwill Distribution Center in Geneseo, the donations of good quality clothing to the Food Pantry are down. Please consider donating outgrown and no longer needed fall clothes to the Pantry. A large number of families and individuals consistently use the items donated by the community as a resource to reduce the dollar amounts necessary to clothe their children. Clothing may be dropped off during our regular hours Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9:00 am to noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm, and Friday from 9:00 am to noon.

With fall’s cooler weather comes the beginning of heating our homes. Because of the high cost of home heating and electricity, our clients often have difficulty keeping up with their monthly bills. If you would like to make a donation toward a client’s heating or electric bill, you may call the Food Pantry at 944-3165 for more information on how to do so.

Another way to help! For the entire month of October Geneseo Super Wash at 810 W. Main Street is going to be donating 50 cents to the Food Pantry for every automatic and self-serve car wash that is purchased. In addition they will donate $1.00 for every set of tokens purchased (4 for $18.00).

It’s not too early to start thinking about what you or your group might like to do to help the less fortunate in the Geneseo area. For many years, members of the community have assisted client families in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. This year will be no exception The help given has taken many forms, including ingredients for a Thanksgiving dinner, gift certificates for singles or elderly people who would be alone on the holiday, gift certificates for meat or call us and let us know how you might want to help. To find out more about adopting a family for Thanksgiving or Christmas, please contact the Pantry at 944-3165.

Food needs for October are: Soups (all kinds, especially ‘Chunky’ style), Jiffy mixes (muffins, cake mixes and cornbread), frosting, oatmeal and instant hot cereal, peanut butter and jelly, and sugar free snacks and cookies.

Non-food needs are: Disposable diapers in sizes 3, 4 and 5, and toilet paper.

Drop boxes at the church for Food Pantry donations are located outside the church office and in the coat room off the front entrance of the church. Donations are always appreciated and especially encouraged on the third Sunday of the month, which is designated Food Pantry Sunday.

Equip, Encourage & EnergizeEquip, Encourage & EnergizeEquip, Encourage & EnergizeEquip, Encourage & Energize You Have A Part To PlayYou Have A Part To PlayYou Have A Part To PlayYou Have A Part To Play

Each one of God's children Has a special part to play, Whether it be great or small, We are needed every day

If your part seems very small, Don't feel you're insignificant

Don't feel that you can't offer much And you wouldn't make a difference Though you're tempted to give up And let another take your place,

Remember, God gave you your gifts And you cannot be replaced

And these gifts that God has given, He longs for you to share

You're just as important as anyone, So don't be in despair

The only one who matters most Is watching for your part, With much anticipation

And excitement in His heart So do not disappoint Him By not taking your cue,

Though you think it unimportant, This part is made for you Don't let God walk away With a disappointed heart Because you felt so unworthy Of your very special part

The parts that we've been given Isn't based on size at all, But rather on the abilities And the gifting of the Lord For each part is important

To make the whole thing work, So do your part with enthusiasm And know that you have worth.

There’s not enough “Thank You’s” in my heart for all the cards, hospital visits, flowers, food and offers to help me, or take me to appointments from my “Church Family”. You suddenly realize the help you need when you can’t do some things for yourself. Special thanks to the person who was there to help me 24/7. Thanks again

to everyone Virginia

Thank you so much to everyone! You have made me feel so welcomed and appreciated since starting my time here with you, and it means so much to me. I am very thankful and so blessed to have the opportunity to serve and work with such welcoming people. I have enjoyed getting to know you and look forward to getting to know you even more. I know that I have come in and started changing things and you have all been so gracious in allowing me to do so. I am having so much fun trying new creative things and I hope that you will enjoy the things I try as well. I want to always be mindful of you and your thoughts so if there is something that you may not like I would always welcome feedback. I want to say a special thank you to Don & Beth Simpson who have been in

the office with me and helped me get acclimated to my new job. You did great!! Thank you again, Angela
