News from Your AAMFT Treasurer
By Silvia Kaminsky
As a fellow Floridian, I feel honored to be your AAMFT
Treasurer and entering the second year of my term on the
AAMFT Board of Directors. Having been a Past President of
FAMFT, I know how hard the Division works on behalf of
its members in Florida and commend the current leadership
and staff for keeping members informed and involved in
state and federal level MFT and consumer-related concerns
and initiatives.
The AAMFT Board of Directors has also been working
tirelessly since the inception of AAMFT’s new strategic plan
in 2011. This long-term plan will enable the Association to
enhance its focus on the practice of Marriage and Family
Therapy while maintaining the integrity of the profession.
The first phase of this long-term plan was the passing of new
Association by-laws last summer that reflect new
membership categories which will allow qualified systemic
practitioners from with other mental health licenses to
become Clinical Fellows of AAMFT. It is hoped that this
change, essentially reconnecting it back to its multi-
disciplinary roots, will enrich the Association by enhancing
its capability of promoting the practice of MFT.
Another aspect of the new strategic plan that will focus on
the practice of MFT is the expansion of the AAMFT Research and Education Foundation. At the end of 2011, the
AAMFT Board of Directors approved to restructure and

Hello All FAMFT Members,
I hope you all have had a fantastic summer and are gearing up for
the fall. I am pleased to report that we had a successful
conference this past June. It seems the location, the seminars and
the style of the conference was well received. I’d like to thank you
all for attending, and extend my most sincere gratitude to the
speakers who came and presented. As the year progresses I
encourage you to stay in touch with your local chapters, there are
some very exciting presentations and seminars scheduled.
SAVE THE DATE: 1/24/13 - 1/26/13. Our next annual conference
will begin on January 24, 2013 at the Marriot in Boca Raton, FL.
We are setting up some great seminars as well as a licensure
renewal track and a student/intern track. There is a call for
proposals that are due September 15, 2012. We would also like to
have a call for student posters. Look for more announcements on
FACEBOOK as well as on our website.
We have been working on a “Welcome Packet” for new members
of FAMFT/AAMFT. The AAMFT has waived the enrollment fee of
$25 for new members, so if you know of someone who is
interested in becoming a member now is the time. Remember
there are new membership categories, here is the link to the
AAMFT website for the category description:

members and our board members who continuously work hard at
supporting FAMFT. I look forward to speaking with you again, and
as always I will make it a priority of informing you of the upcoming
events in our organizations.

fund the Foundation to be a more active entity for the
purpose of advancing research, scholarship, and
education related to the practice of relational and
systemic therapy. The following is the Foundation’s
new Mission Statement:
The AAMFT Research and Education Foundation
Mission Statement
Advancing research, scholarship, and education related
to the practice of relational and systemic therapies by
• 2Offering credentialing to a multidisciplinary
group of researchers who investigate treatment
effectiveness, theory development, pedagogy,
supervision, and training;
• 2Supporting well-designed studies that provide a
research-derived basis for best practices;
• 2Offering opportunities to foundation researchers
for collaboration with colleagues, presentation
of findings to clinicians and supervisors, and
sharing of knowledge with students, clinicians,
and new researchers in the field; and
• 2Providing avenues for dissemination of
information to the public.
The AAMFT Board of Directors also approved
appointing an Advisory Board comprised of top MFT
researchers and scholars in order to implement the
Foundation’s objectives beginning this year. So stay
tuned for more information...
Lastly, the AAMFT Board of Directors held a Board
Retreat late January 2011 at headquarters in
Alexandria, VA. The purpose of this retreat, which
also brought together new and returning Board
members for the first time, was to deliberate further
and provide and clear and coherent definition of
success for the Association that would operationalize
the overarching recommendation of the new strategic
plan: that AAMFT be the home of all those who were
committed to the excellence in the practice of systemic
and relationally-based therapies; and that AAMFT
serve as an organization that advanced both the
profession and the practice of marriage and family therapy.
The AAMFT Board of Directors, AAMFT Executive
Director and staff will be engaged in the next few
months considering different options and business
plans that can best position AAMFT to provide
excellent services and benefits in accord with its new
strategic direction.
The AAMFT Board of Directors will also be
reviewing and revising the Association’s Governance
Policies over the course of this year to incorporate the
organizational and by-law changes made over the past
year and others anticipated by the new strategic plan.
Lastly, as your AAMFT Treasurer, I am committed to
overseeing that the Association is on solid financial
footing as it pursues all of these exciting changes. The
AAMFT Board of Directors approved last year that the
Audit Committee (which I am the Chair of as AAMFT
Treasurer) function as a Finance Committee in order to
consider the long-term financial stability and
capability of AAMFT in pursuing all of these new
strategic objectives, especially in light of challenging
economic times. A Finance Committee’s responsibility
is to ensure that the financial elements of the
organization are in accord with its vision, mission and
strategic plan.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the FAMFT
Annual Conference on January 24-26 in the Boca
Raton area, and sharing more news from your AAMFT
Board of Directors!

substantial support for her receiving this award.
Some of the highlights of Dr. McWey’s nomination
letter for Heather Farineau follows:
Heather exhibits a passion and dedication in
the area of child welfare, working to improve
outcomes for families involved with the foster
care system. She became a “certified trainer”
in The Incredible Years, an evidenced- based,
empirically supported, parent psycho-
education curriculum, and then provided
weekly parent education groups to families
considered “at risk” for the placement of their
children in foster care, or to parents court
ordered to participate because their children
were already removed from their homes.
Upon graduation of the parents, they
provided Heather with positive feedback in
their evaluations, with one noting, “Heather
didn’t judge me or look down on me. Heather
actually believed in me and my family. That
was all I needed.”
For two years in a row, Heather received the
“Cora Ross Evans Scholarship,” a competitive
award given to the top graduate students in
the College of Human Sciences at FSU.
Heather also received the Title IV-E Child
Welfare Education Stipend.
Working as a part of a volunteer research
team (which is in addition to her academic
year assistantship responsibilities), under the
direction of Dr. McWey, Heather has worked
continued from page 1
on the team goal of providing
empirically supported parent
education to at risk families. Dr.
McWey highlighted Heather’s
invaluable ability in this research
process involving sampling,
delivery, data collection and
analyses.
In addition to being published in
peer-reviewed journals in the area
of child welfare, Heather has
presented her research at national
conferences.
Congratulations Heather, for your
outstanding character, commitment to
excellence, and modeling a strong work
ethic and passion for serving the needs of
families who need it most! Wishing you
continued success in your evolution and
development!
