For a shopping experience off the beaten path, drive a couple exits north of PB to visit the UTC mall in La Jolla. This outdoor mall offers a nice variety of stores and peaceful grounds that are pleasant for leisurely window shopping as well as holiday gift-buying. In addition to mall staples (think Nordstrom and the Apple Store), UTC is a unique experience in that you can take a break after all that shopping to grab a bite to eat with live entertainment!
The food court circles Ice Town, an ice rink where skaters of all ages and abilities may be found gliding in circles. Ice Town is open for public skating sessions seven days a week, and since admission runs about the same as a movie ticket, it’s a COOL change of pace with a lot more fodder to dish on afterwards. Less experienced skaters can stop in on Saturday mornings to get a free brush up on the basics.

Taco Tuesday is as essential to San Diego culture and the sun and the surf. The longstanding tradition of gobbling cheap tacos while grabbing a drink and catching up with friends on Taco Tuesday is a local standard. There are a lot of options available but to unleash the gringo inside you, go no further than Fred’s Mexican Cantina. Relax with any of the variety of margaritas of-fered, from the fruity flavors of the Diva Rita to the mouth-puckering, head-burning sensation of the K.A. Rita, which is little more than 100-proof tequila!
Before you jump into the tacos enjoy the Chingaderas appetizer, which is Fred’s original Mexican eggroll! These scrumptious little bites are unique to Fred’s and should not be missed as the perfect warm-up for what’s to come. Fred’s offers a variety of tacos, from traditional favorites like carnitas or shrimp to the unique flavors of the buffalo chicken or cheeseburger tacos. At only two or three bucks a pop every Tuesday, you can navigate through the menu to decide on your favorites. The Fred’s sauce is delicious and they brag the best salsa north of TJ! Fred’s is finger-licking good, but don’t take my word for it! With locations in PB, Old Town and the Gaslamp there’s no excuse not to grab your gals and, in Fred’s tradition, “Kiss My Tacolicious Tuesdays!”

Ho! Ho! Ho! Have you been naughty or nice this year? For goodness sake, go to the mall with your girlfriends and find out! Sitting on jolly old Saint Nick’s lap is a timeless tradi-tion that is full of laughter and memories. So, don’t be shy and go ahead and
tell Santa Claus what you want for Christmas because he is the man of the season that can make all your dreams come true and won’t lie to you like the Pacific Beach boys!
THrow an ugly sweaTer parTyHands down, ugly sweater parties just scream fun and are a great way to socialize and mingle. Remember that dar-ling sweater Grandma knitted you last Christmas with the
elves prancing through the presents? Well now is the perfect time to break out the hideous creature and flaunt Grandma’s skills. Just make sure by the end of the night, you snap a ridiculous photo of yourself to give it to Grandma for her Christmas present.

11december 2010 //
s’Mores and MoreAre you ready for the ultimate dat-ing recipe? You know what s’mores are, right? Take a bar of chocolate, a
couple of flaming gooey marshmallows wedge it in-between two crunchy graham crackers. Mix that sinful creation in with a bonfire and you’ve got yourself one sweet messy sandwich of heaven! It’s a delicious tradition and is something you and your partner certainly could enjoy sharing.
love gaMesInvite other couples over for a thrilling night of board games. Challenge the other couples to a round of your favorite games such as Monopoly or Pictionary.
sHop ‘Till you dropChristmas shopping is a must, so why not do it together? Turning Christmas shopping into a date is a wonderful way to transform an errand into an opportunity to spend
time together. Shopping is always fun if you’re doing it with someone you like. Have a blast with it! Help each other pick out gifts for the peo-ple and if you pay a little extra attention, you can get some fantastic gift ideas for your mate.
piCTure THisImagine being snowed-in a log cabin or even a cold wet miser-able day where all you want to
do is stay inside. Well here is a creative indoor activity to help pass the time! Get together all the pictures you have taken together and cre-ate a photo album. The date will be about making a memory of the time you have spent together. This shows that you treasure the things you have done together in the past, present and future.
HiT THe iCe and skaTe inTo THe Holidays!Ice-skating is a great date idea that allows you to become close to one another without the pressure of an intimate setting. Ice-skating gives you an excuse to touch each other through hold-
ing hands or helping each other stay on your feet while laughing your heads off. So wrap yourself up in scarves and gloves and take your mate to Ice Town at UTC for some fun, wintertime exercise. Didn’t you know that ice-skating is the winter version of a romantic walk on the beach?
ligHT iT upDuring the winter holidays, there is always that one street in your neighborhood where the whole block goes crazy with lights and decorations. Take advantage this season by
planning a date to either drive or take a moonlight stroll through one of these free, winter hot-spots. You can keep warm in your car listen-ing to Christmas music on the way and then share the joy that others have given so freely.
fa la la la, la la la…Spread the holiday cheer and delight your neighbors with some holiday songs either by going door to door or by gathering around the piano. Make sure you only invite peo-
ple who can’t hold a tune and that there is plenty of hot chocolate in people’s cups. Too scared to sing? Check out the Pacific Beach holiday parade on Saturday December 11th, from 2-5pm on Garnet Ave.
Binge on dvd’s‘Tis the season to kick back on the couch and have a “Holiday Movie Marathon.” This is the best time of the year to pop
open the egg nog, get cozy by a warm fire, pig out on buttery popcorn and relax with either a sappy, happy or crappy Christmas flick. Here are the top 5 movies you could choose from: 1a Christmas Story; 2a Charlie Brown Christmas; 3How the grinch Stole Christmas; 4The Santa Claus; 5elf
volunTeerIf you find yourself in a “giving” mood, call up a homeless shel-ter, a soup kitchen, a nursing home or one of the animal rescue shelters in your area to see if they need help over the holiday
season. They can all use volunteers around this time of year. You’ll feel good and who knows, maybe you’ll meet someone new!

WHaT’S YOuR HISTORY WITH SLIgHTLY STOOPID?We went coast-to-coast this year with Collie Buddz and Cypress Hill. I’ve been going out with Stoopid on their summer tours but my history with them goes way back. I went to high school and junior high with Miles and Kyle.
They brought me on board not that long ago because they needed a DJ and that’s what I do.
WHaT IS THe TRIBe OF KIngS?What is a reggae sound system. A reggae sound system is basically the way for people to hear up-and-coming, new reggae from Jamaica. His-torically it’s been the reggae radio from Jamaica.
WHaT IS YOuR HISTORY WITH TRIBe OF KIngS?I was looking to get into a reggae sound system early on. In 1997 Jay Dread and Rashi had a sound system they had started, so I linked up with them and we started doing some gigs. It slowly progressed through clubs and shows and now we consider ourselves “San Diego’s Cham-pion Sound.”
We also do dubplates, which are special tracks that the artists do for us that we can play but no one else can. We have been doing big shows and concerts out here for a long time. We make ourselves available for people all over the world; we’ve touched down in Europe, Australia, Ma-laysia and all sorts of places.
WHaT aRTISTS HaVe YOu WORKeD WITH On THe DuBPLaTeS?We started with Martin Campbell and it pretty much just turned into an addiction. We have worked several artists including Barrington Levy, Gregory Isaacs, Half Pint and Eek-A-Mouse to name a few.
WHaT IS YOuR HISTORY WITH aLBOROSIe?We really have supported Alborosie from the first day we heard his tunes come out. We’ve been playing all his new tracks as soon as they come out and try to cut dubs with him as much as possible. He’s definitely an artist that we support and we want to see more of him in San Diego.
WHaT WaS IT LIKe WORKIng WITH SLY & ROBBIe?I was able to go on tour with Slightly Stoopid, Sly & Robbie and Pep-per. They are one of the core groups of people that made reggae music what it is. Every day I was sitting on the side of the stage and was just kind of awestruck. Their whole horns section with Nambo and Stepper, Bubbler on the keys, Sly & Robbie and especially Bulby on the boards, I mean the whole “Taxi Gang” thing is phenomenal (Sly & Robbie’s crew is referred to as “Taxi Gang”).
WHeRe Can I See THe TRIBe OF KIngS In San DIegO?We do Sunday nights at U-31 in North Park and Thursday nights at both Harney Sushi locations (Oceanside and Old Town). Harney has the best sushi in Dago if you ask me!
anY CLOSIng THOugHTS?I want to shout out my crew the Tribe of Kings, Rashi, Dash Eye, Jester, Peril, Marcus Black and Shane Berry, he’s the hidden member of the Tribe of Kings but he definitely does a lot to help us out. I want to big-up the First Power Crew. I want to say rest in peace Disko Rick, I say it every day. I want to big-up Mike Czech, Mike Czech and Disko Rick are the ones who taught me how to DJ. I definitely want to big-up San Diego in general because I would be nothing without this city.

DJ unite, a high-ranking member of the Tribe of Kings order, is also slightly stoopid’s touring DJ. The Tribe of Kings is a group of tightly-knit local reggae DJ’s known as San Diego’s top ranking sound system, or what the locals refer to as “San Diego’s Champion Sound.” Just hours before hopping onto a jet plane to work Slight-ly’s recent California mini-tour, we caught up with Unite and here’s what he had to say.

alborosiealborosieBorn in Sicily, Italy, Alborosie has made an international name
for himself as being one of reggae music’s most talented new
artists. When he first made his move to Kingston, Jamaica,
Alborosie was not initially well-liked by the locals. They use to
call him ‘Borosie’ which has a derogative meaning. In order
to play off his original struggle he decided to add his name
‘Al-‘ to ‘Borosie’ and created his stage name ‘Alborosie.’ He has
since won over Kingston, Jamaica and the entire reggae music
scene. Alborosie played a sold out show this last June at Sound-
wave in Mission Beach and has left San Diego itching to see him
perform again.
Having played on or produced over 200,000 songs, Sly and Robbie are one
of reggae’s most influential and long lasting production teams. Based out of
Kingston, Jamaica, Sly and Robbie have combined reggae, hip-hop and dub in
order to create something not just popular within the reggae genre but rather
a type of sound that can be found internationally between handfuls of genres.
The production duo has worked with legendary names such as Bob Marley,
Black Uhuru, Peter Tosh, Horace Andy, Gregory Isaacs, Hugh Mundell, Lacksley
Castell, Madonna, Britney Spears, Sinead O’Connor, Sting, The Rolling Stones,
Bob Dylan, Ben Harper and Michael Franti just to name a few!

in June 2010, samantha long and her sister lindsay spent three weeks teaching and playing with children at the iMuMA orphanage located in Bagamoyo, tanzania in Africa. samantha is one of 25,000 who have volunteered for the cross cultural society in an effort to bring people together to foster cultural understanding. on Novem-ber 5, 2010, fashion 5.0 Magazine chose samantha long to be their 2010 “woman of the year. “ samantha was nominated by her peers.
WHeRe DID YOu gO In aFRICa?My sister and I went went to a place in East Africa called Baga-moyo. It’s a small village right on the coast of Tanzania. It’s a place stricken with poverty, AIDS, sickness and Malaria. It’s exactly how you would picture it with the dirt roads and the mud houses. No one has hygiene or water or food or anything.
WHO WeRe YOu THeRe TO HeLP?There was a group of 20 of us in our group and we all got placed in different things. My sister and I got placed in an orphanage called IMUMA. In Swahili it stands for faith, love and hope.
The kids there were both orphans and those who had really bad lives at home, where many had been abused in some sort of way. It was actually a really bad area with the drugs and stuff. We went there every morning and they were so happy that we were there. The kids love it when people from other places help out.
WHaT WaS YOuR gOaL WITH THe CHILDRen?We would go in their little classrooms and try to teach them Eng-lish. It was really hard to keep their attention! We would teach them for about 30 minutes and then go in the field and play with them. We pretty much took their mind off of their problems and that’s what the orphanage was about.
WHeRe eLSe DID YOu gO On YOuR TRIP?We would go and see families that would teach us about their cul-ture, we would go to different schools and we went on a Safari to Zanzibar Island. It was really sad leaving the children but it was an amazing experience and I would definitely go back and do it again!

DID you KNow? Stress contributes to heart disease, high blood pressure, a weaker immune system and many other serious diseases.
By MicAh skye, l.N.M.t, N.c
1 sMileJust sit there and smile. Like a fool, yes, but a relaxed fool! Smiling triggers serotonin, a neurotransmitter that controls and reduces distress and anxiety. When you smile everyone around you is happier as well, so go out there and be a trendsetter!
2 THe Healing power of waTerOne of the most accessible and powerful stress relievers is the simple, soothing effect of water. Bathing, also known as Hydrot herapy, can be a restorative ritual that soothes the mind and relaxes the body. Go for a swim, take a shower or hike to a local waterfall. You can also take a friend to Balboa Park to see the world-famous Lily Pond. There’s also a water fountain next to the Ruben H. Fleet Center so bring a penny to toss for good luck!
3 BreaTHe deepDeepening your breathing slows down your heart rate and blood pressure, relaxes your muscles and reduces the levels of stress hor-mones in the body. Deep, controlled breathes are an essential part of meditation. Bonus tip? Find a quiet space and get comfortable. Close your eyes, relax your mind and imagine something soothing like a stream of water or waves washing onto the beach.
4 relax To THe sound of...Music! Did you know that listening to relaxing music can reduce stress? Music conducts your endocrine’s ‘orchestra’ of stress-re-lieving hormones. Pick a soothing CD or Pandora selection and let it shift your brain into a symphony of relaxation. While classi-cal is good it’s not a must, there are plenty of choices out there. Citizen Cope, Thievery Corporation and Jack Johnson are all good choices.
5 look aT soMeTHing BeauTifulSeriously, find something beautiful to look at such as the ocean, some animals or even beautiful people. Try changing your desktop image into a beautiful image of a place you have been to or want to visit. Do a Google image search on flowers, landscapes and Italy to add a little beauty into your life.
6 aroMaTHerapyAromatherapy is an ancient science of using essential oils to promote health and well being that has been gaining traction in recent years. The benefits of aromatherapy include aiding in re-laxation, relieving stress and boosting energy levels. At Bath & Body Works you can check out their aromatherapy collection that includes body care products such as body wash and lotion, mas-sage oil, bubble baths and even pillow mist!
7 a HoT Cup of TeaThe results are in, the clinical trials have spoken. Drinking tea relieves stress--drinking green tea, that is. There’s something in green tea that helps us relax, and it may start turning up in other foods soon.
8 MediTaTeResearch has shown that meditation can contribute to an indi-vidual’s psychological and physiological well-being. In fact, true meditation is done just by sitting, breathing and becoming pres-ent. When done properly, it brings the brainwave pattern into an alpha state, which is a level of consciousness that promotes relax-ation and healing.
9 laugHLaugh out loud and the world will think you’re crazy. Let them! Laughter significantly lowers the levels of stress hormones and re-turns the body to a more relaxed state. Call someone who cracks you up or ask someone if they know any jokes. Bonus tip? Have a funny joke or two prepared to get other people laughing. As we know laughing is both fun and contagious.
0 a liTTle Healing TouCH The power of touch eases pain, lessens anxiety, reduces stress, generates hope and even lowers stress hormone levels. There are several forms of healing touch from reflexology to shiatsu, to something as simple as massaging your temples in a circle for a minute. Try it and you’ll be amazed how well it works!
Stress is an emotional and physical response to pressures from the outside world. Numerous studies have shown that stress turns your mood negative and reduces your ability to learn and remember. Although stress if unavoidable at times, these simple exercises will help relieve such pressures and help you to relax. Remember, you choose the way you feel the way you do, so why not feel good?

To calm skin: Grind dry oatmeal in a food processor until you have a powdered texture and add water to make a thinner paste.
