Again: I was lucky. Each and every one of these people was energetic, straightforward, smart, and solidly in my corner.

In 1998 I met Rick Wetzel, and we were married in 2000. Rick was living and working in Minneapolis. When we decided to marry, it was “easier” for him to locate to Milwaukee than for me to attempt to run my business long-distance. Within a year, Rick joined me in the business. Rick brought long-range thinking and strategic planning to the table. As an engineer, he began to look at everything we were doing and suggest some Best Practices.

It was perfect timing – the Mequon business was continuing to grow, and we decided to open a second store in Brookfield.

So, here it is, nearly a quarter of a century since I opened the Mequon store. We have a dedicated staff of about 20 people between the two stores. Our Management Team includes Michelle Karch, Linda Lanigan and Sarah Hoxie who work as if they own the place! And then, of course, there are our customers, who understand how important it is to BE LOYAL and SHOP LOCAL.

The biggest surprise about what I do? I thought I was getting into the fashion business. And, of course, I am. But, what I didn’t realize was that my real business was going to be SELF-ESTEEM! The relationships the Faye’s staff has built with generations of girls and women these last two decades are humbling and gratifying. We know their lifestyles, and it is our privilege to dress them for the times of their lives, whether it’s a tailgate…a wedding…or a funeral. Clothes, jewelry, shoes, and handbags don’t make the woman. But, if she feels good about what’s she’s wearing, she’s more confident, and life is just a little bit less stressful.

As small business people I’m not sure we ever get to say things “get easier.” But, there is no substitute for doing what you love.

I still wake up at 4:30 every morning eager to start my day. The economic environment remains dicey with no calming of the seas on the horizon. We at Faye’s just strive to KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON !

FAYE’S...HOW IT ALL STARTED

People assume I am in the women’s boutique business because I always had a passion for fashion. Not true! In 1990, after a 20-year career in advertising and marketing, I began to toy with the idea of owning my own business. A product of German and English parents, my work ethic is strong; I love working! Why not work for myself rather than someone else?

So, sitting in airports between flights to visit my advertising clients, I did a marketing plan on myself: What did I like to do? What didn’t I like? What was I good at? Where were my weaknesses? And, of course, what did I believe there was a need for in Milwaukee? Two opportunities emerged: a health club and a women’s clothing store. (Remember, this was 25 years ago, and there were very few health clubs.) Well, the clothing store would take significantly less capital than the health club. And, so the decision was made. It was as simple and as complicated as that.

Certainly there was (and is) nothing simple about being an entrepreneur. Sometimes people want to know what it’s like to own your own business. I tell them, “If you can make panic your friend, you have a shot at success!”

But, I was lucky. From my experience as a marketing consultant, I knew that there would have to be a line item in my start-up budget for CONSULTANTS. I was embarking on a venture where I knew next to nothing. I had to get smart, and I had to do it fast. I hired a buying service that took me by the hand to New York, introduced me to vendors, and showed me how to write an order and do a rudimentary open-to-buy. While still working full-time at the ad agency, I spent two evenings a week for an entire year learning the business cradle-to-grave from a husband and wife small business consultancy team! And, I hired a one-man-band accountant.

maxi dress or skirtYou’re on-trend and you never have to ask the question, “is this dress too short for me?”

Oh, Summer, Where Art Thou?

patio pantsEasy, breezy. Again, you’re on-trend, and the only thing more comfortable are your pajamas.

a pair of shortsAs short or as long as you are comfortable in.

a tote bag If it can double as a beach bag, you are a genius.

a colorful tunic(OK...this makes #11...but, it’s fun and easy…it covers your butt…and you don’t have it in your closet)

a go-to dress suitable for luncheons, etc...Always be on the lookout for The Perfect Dress...when you find it, buy it, even if you have no occasion on the horizon. Chances are you’ll need it next week.

white teeI don’t have to explain this, do I? But, make sure you buy new white tee(s) every season – they don’t survive a season of regular laundering.

a tankEven if you don’t like to show your arms, there will come a day (or hopefully a week) where it’s just too darn hot for anything else.

a cashmere wrapThe nights get cool – whether your sitting on the dock or in a restaurant.

black caprisWear with flip flops or a sandal* for REAL CASUAL; wear with ballet flats* for CASUAL ELEGANCE; wear with pumps* for ALL DRESSED UP.

a denim jacketThis is your summer blazer, and it works over everything else on this list. Not a denim fan, a cropped cardigan works just as well.

Wisconsin summers are notoriously short, but this year portends to be especially abbreviated. And, in my opinion, summer wardrobes are more difficult to build and maintain than fall and winter. (After all, when in doubt, a cashmere sweater always fits the bill in winter!)In summer, things are shorter, tighter, sheerer! For some that’s the Good News; others, not so much! There’s more color and pattern, so combining outfits can be a challenge.

You can totally transform the looks of these pieces with jewelry. Pile it on. Mix your metals. Wear your good stuff with that $39 statement necklace. Oh, and don’t forget to grab a scarf as you head out the door!

*I suggest pairing down your shoe choices, too. Sandals, ballet flats, and a pair of pumps will take you everywhere and anywhere. (Flip flops are a given.)

Some of us like shopping and feel more comfortable with a lot of clothes and a lot of choices each morning. But, if you’re trying to KISALB (Keep It Simple And Look Beautiful), it’s really very, very, easy.

My advice is to Keep It Simple! How about TEN EASY PIECES that will meet any and every fashion occasion for the next four months? It’s really very, very easy. ~Faye

Oh, and I’ll get “dressed up” in Clover Canyon patio pants and a tee to sit dockside at Oconomowoc Lake Club, waiting for Rick to come in from sailing.

from Faye’s!

We play on the beach, water ski, tube, enjoy the fire pit and yummy cook-outs!!My dad always teases me because what I like to wear at the Lake resembles a little of “I’m at the Hamptons” style with my floppy beach hat, bright jewels, cute beach tunic or maxi and wedges!! Tiffany:I don’t think this really is an “activity”, but I so enjoy relaxing on the patio. The girls and I always laugh because any time any sort of lounge pant comes into the store I am notorious for saying “ now this is the perfect patio pant.” Cheers!
