Featured website: Our World in Data The goal of our work is to make the knowledge on the big problems accessible and understandable

Our World in Data is about Research and data to make progress against the world’s largest problems.

The front page of Our World in Data lists the same big global problems every day, because they matter every day. One of the biggest mistakes that the news media makes is to suggest that different things matter on different days.

To understand issues that are affecting billions, we need data. We need to carefully measure what we care about and make the results accessible in an understandable and public platform. This allows everyone to see the state of the world today and track where we are making progress, and where we are falling behind. The publication we are building has this goal. Through interactive data visualizations we can see how the world has changed; by summarizing the scientific literature we can understand why.

We design our work with the aim of generating an impact beyond what our team can achieve directly. By producing charts and data that can be freely downloaded and embedded in others’ work, we support and empower colleagues in policy, media and civil society also working on the problems we focus on.

On the closely integrated website SDG-Tracker.org we present the data and research on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2015, all countries in the world signed up to reach the SDGs by 2030 and we built this site to track progress towards them. Our SDG-Tracker is a widely accessed publication that presents all the latest available data on the 232 SDG-Indicators with which the 17 Goals are assessed.

Topics covered include: Health; Demographic Change; Food and Agriculture; Education and Knowledge; Energy and Environment; Poverty and Economic Development; and Living conditions, Community and Wellbeing.

COVID-19 Health Worker Voices A new project gathering health system insights from the frontline via WhatsApp

The Nossal Institute for Global Health and the School of Computing and Information Systems, both at The University of Melbourne, have entered into a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Twilio, to initiate a WhatsApp channel that enables the compilation of voice memos from health workers across Australia and the world on their challenges and successes in the face of the unfolding COVID-19 crisis.

We will ask health workers to share their stories through simple voice memos which will give us insight into the specific challenges they face, as well as solutions proposed and innovations undertaken, by both health workers and the health systems in which they work. The stories will also convey the range of coping strategies adopted by health workers over time. The hope is that the sharing of stories will also provide cathartic purpose for health workers.

Find out more information about the project. If you are a health worker you can follow this link to WhatsApp on your smartphone to share your story now, and to keep sharing at any time.

The link will take you to a private chat. Simply type ‘hello’ to get started, then follow the prompts from there.

Wellcome Photography Prize 2020 shortlist The judges have now shortlisted 25 entries from 127 countries for the Wellcome Photography Prize 2020

The 2020 prize has five categories: Social Perspectives, Hidden Worlds, Medicine in Focus, and two categories on Mental Health, which is the special theme for this year.

At Wellcome we believe a radical new approach is needed to transform the science of mental health. And with the 2020 prize we hope to transform public perceptions too.

Mental health is difficult to depict and, often, hard to explain, which leads to misunderstanding and stigma.

The shortlisted photographers have, in no small feat, managed to convey both the interiority of their subjects and the stigmas around various mental health issues, asking us to look more closely and think more openly.

Pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for pharmacists: the gold standard to practice / Carolina Witchmichen Penteado Schmidt. Springer,

2020. This unique book is the first on paediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation that is especially intended for pharmacists – in recognition of the fact that Paediatric Oncology Pharmacy is an area where more and

more specific knowledge is required in daily practice, yet pharmacists who work in paediatric stem cell transplantation do not have a book addressing their specific needs.

This pioneering book will likely become the new gold standard for practice, addressing subjects such as stem cells and their differentiation mechanisms; aspects of embryonic and non-embryonic stem cells; stem cell transplantation in paediatrics; stem cell sources and related technical choices; stem cell donors; scheduling transplantations; diseases and chemotherapy protocols that require stem cell transplantation; stem cell homing; engraftment and repopulation of stem cells in bone marrow; autologous stem cell transplantation in paediatrics; allogeneic stem cell transplantation in paediatrics; and indications for autologous and allogeneic pediatric stem cell transplantation.

Further, it discusses paediatric graft-versus-host disease and the pharmacist; antibacterial and antifungal prophylaxis; detailed chemotherapy, conditioning and trials for paediatric stem cell transplantation; conditioning granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in paediatric stem cell transplantation; analyzing prescriptions and programming a paediatric stem cell transplantation; handling chemotherapy and adjuvant drugs for paediatric stem cell transplantation; stem cell transplantation in children up to 1 year old; and clinical pharmacy in paediatric stem cell transplantation.
