The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of Afr can descent. Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. In 2010, the theme focused on the history of black economic empowerment and recognized the achievements of the painter Jacob Lawrence, the entrepreneur Annie Malone and the National Urban League, a civil rights organization. Inspired by the challenge "to change the world", 3rd grade students chose to serve the Fisher House community.
Fisher House provides residency support for families and family members undergoing extended care at Wilford Hall, Brooks Army Medical Center, or the Center for The Intrepid. When families come to Fisher House, they are not thinking about the little comforts of home. Third graders hope that will change. They decorated and wrapped over 100 picture frames, wallet-sized photo albums, pink and red t-shirts, booties, onesies, and
socks for the families. Many of the patients at the military hospitals are in need of long-term care. A framed photo of a loved one can go along way in the recovery. The clothing items are additional gifts to families of Fisher House.
As we celebrated Valentine's Day, we know our commitment to caring was celebrated at the Fisher House. Many thanks are given to the third grade classes and to Mrs. Moulder, Mrs. Lawrence, Ms. Perez, Ms.
Razloznik, and Mrs. Torre. We can change the world, one smile, one child, one family, at a time.
Brandon Galloway, an 8th grade student pictured below, received the first laptop to be issued to our 7th and 8th grade students by Superintendent, Dr. Burnie Roper ,on February 16th 2011. The inclusion of our 7th and 8th grade students into the Stacey Jr/Sr High School’s 1-to-1 laptop program reflects our efforts to streamline our student’s access to electronic and digital
resources while making our operational use of technology resources more efficient. All 7th and 8th grade students will use these laptops on a daily basis in their classes. Most of these students will have access to their laptops on a 24x7 basis. Mr. Will McDowell, our district Technology Director, states, “This 1-to-1 laptop initiative for our 7th and 8th grade students
has been an exciting experience. We worked with our teachers, got inputs from our students, and resolved several technical challenges to help reach this operational point. We believe these technology resources will help maximize the learning experience our students receive as we
prepare them for 21st century challenges.”
Our 7th and 8th grade students have been working with Ms. Lesley Denny over the last several weeks to prepare for this day. She has met with their parents to explain the goals of this
project and our need for parents to be active in helping to ensure the 24X7 student access to the laptops remains focused on academic achievement. Our parents received information about
various insurance options as part of their financial responsibilities. Ms. Denny has expended a tremendous amount of energy into planning and preparing for this day. One of the expectations is
that each student obtains a “laptop drivers license” as a prerequisite for receiving their laptop. She has met with every 7th and 8th grade student to provide this training while serving
as the positive technology leader for these students. Dr. Roper expects frequent inspections to ensure proper care and screening for appropriate use and content. One of the technical challenges for this project was the addition of 24X7 content filtering. Our 24X7 content filtering is now operational and extends this protection beyond the campus network. Our anti-virus program also operates 24X7 even when off campus. Our school board has been very supporting to provide the funding for these student laptops. Our students helped
select a great laptop case that allows for the laptop to be use while staying within the protective case. Dr. Roper is supportive of the on-going 1-to-1 laptop program’s goal of
transferring ownership of the laptops to our students upon their graduation for Lackland ISD.

Ms. Horn, the Jr/Sr HS principal, has coordinated efforts to ensure that the academic achievement of the students remains the primary focus of instruction as we continue to integrate more technology. Mr. Hollomon, the Jr/Sr HS vice principal, has been working
on updating the student code of conduct to better reflect and support appropriate student use of technology resources.
Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I look forward to an exciting school year.
Congratulations to the boy’s varsity basketball team for winning their game on Tuesday night against Sender Academy by a score of 56-42. With the victory the boys clinched the third place spot in district and secured a place in the Texas state playoffs. After missing the playoffs last season, it was one of the goals the boys set out at the beginning of the
season and were able to accomplish. The boys play Medina High School at 7:30 next Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Boerne High School
The junior varsity boys basketball season is over and they finished with an 9-6 record after starting off 0-5. Each player deserves a lot of credit for not becoming discouraged and
continuing to work hard. Coach Flores would like to thank all the boys for their dedication and commitment to the team and looks forward to working with them next year.

Is Your Child being Bullied?
Check out the Bullying Information and Reporting Form on the Student section of the Lackland Elementary
School web-site. There is information about bullying and a form to report bullying. The easy-to-complete form can be filled in at school or at home. The
reporter can remain anonymous, if desired.
This is one more way to facilitate reporting bullying and dealing with this undesirable behavior.
Students in Mr. Garcia’s SFA class play the marble game of ringer after having read
the book “A Time For Andrew” by Mary Downing Hahn. In the story a boy
spends the summer at his ancestral home and switches
places with the boy who used to live there and looks
just like him in 1910. In order to get back to his time he had to beat him in a game
of ringer. The kids really enjoyed themselves and it was refreshing to see them engaged in a game that did
not include an X-box or Play Station.
