LISD Board of Trustees Approve Schematic Design Phase for a New Auditorium and Classroom Addition The Lackland Independent School District Board of Trustees voted on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 to proceed with the schematic design phase for an auditorium and classroom addition. This is the first phase of this construction project. LISD hopes to build a fully equipped 500 seat auditorium that includes a scene and robotics shop. The elementary school would gain nine new classrooms for their 5 th and 6 th grade students and the addition would also include an elementary science , computer , and motor lab, two special needs classrooms, an elective classroom, and three small classrooms that would could be used for small group instruction. The proposed structure would be built where the four elementary ramp buildings are currently located. It is important to note that we are proceeding with this project very cautiously. LISD has a construction budget that ranges from $8-$9 million dollars and we must remain within this range in order to protect the financial solvency of the district. Final decisions on the actual construction project will not be made until construction bids have been approved by the board. We have scheduled a Town Hall Meeting for Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 6:00pm in the Cynthia Lyon Center to discuss our proposed plans and to receive input and feedback from our community members. All are welcome to attend. FUTURE ENGINEERS

Twelve Stacey students were „Engineers-for-a-day” at a field trip sponsored by the Bexar Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers on Tuesday. Over 150 students from 17 area high schools were in attendance. The day started at the 2012 Proclamation Breakfast at La Villita downtown where the students heard from several speakers in the engineering profession. San Antonio District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan and John Tyler, the “Bexar County Young Engineer of the Year” gave humorous speeches. After breakfast, the Stacey students split into two groups of 6. Mr. Rodgers‟ group traveled to CEC Engineering on I-10, and Mr. Keller‟s group went to the offices of HDR Engineering up near the SA airport.

The CEC group watched presentations on the civil engineering profession, looked at CAD drawings of specific designs, and talked to engineers about their day-to-day tasks. After lunch at Chili‟s, the entire group traveled to Boerne to tour the jobsite of a waste-water treatment, and recycling plant designed by CEC.

2004 Stacey graduate and HDR engineer Stillman Jordan III was the guide for the HDR group. Students saw individual presentations by personnel in the environmental, electrical, transportation, water treatment, and structural engineering divisions of the company. They viewed designs for the new multi-story Ambulatory Care Center next to Wilford Hall being designed by HDR.

After a pizza lunch, Stillman talked about the educational and professional track to becoming an engineer, classes you should take in high school, professional tests, and obstacles that an engineer sometimes faces. He specifically mentioned the valuable knowledge he gained in Mr. Fernandez‟ AP Calculus class and the benefits of the smaller class sizes at Stacey.

Students participated in contests involving roadway design, building a Jenga tower to withstand wind force, and engineering math problems. At the end of the day, Stillman gave out prizes to all including HDR polo shirts, pens, coffee mugs and mini-footballs. The twelve students returned to Stacey with a greater understanding of the engineering profession, some of the various engineering disciplines, and a possible career choice for their lives after Stacey.

-CASF Donation Drive- Stacey High School‟s student council is holding a supply drive for the Contingency Aeromedial Staging Facility at Wilford Hall from February 21th to March 9th. Now that‟s a mouthful, so let‟s break it down. The Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility, or CASF, is a facility at Wilford Hall which provides medical care for our wounded troops. These soldiers stay at the CASF until ready to be transferred to another location for further treatment. Please understand that this is one of their initial stops, so as a result they do not have much more than what they had leaving their combat zone. And while our Wounded Warriors receive top notch medical treatment at the facility, the CASF relies on donations for supplies like clothing, toiletries, entertainment, snacks, etc. Our drive to help supply the CASF is open to the whole school, from kindergarten to 12th grade. So from February 21st to March 9th, there will be a blue donation box in the elementary school‟s main office, nurse‟s office, special education office, and gymnasium. Please, do your part in helping America‟s Wounded Warriors; donate items to the CASF. A complete list of needed supplies is included on this paper.

** Please note the following: ** - Travel sizes are preferred for hygiene items. - Gift cards ONLY, no money or checks will be accepted. - Some entertainment/ miscellaneous items may be gently used, all others must be new.
