Above and Beyond Award Winners – Fall 2012

We are pleased to announce our Fall 2012 Above and Beyond award winners. Our school board president, Mr. Brian Miller, presented each Above and Beyond recipient

with a “Certificate of Achievement” at the December 2012 school board meeting. Dr. Burnie Roper,

Superintendent, presented their nomination letters, commended them for their service, and reminded them

about the accompany $200.00 stipend and reserved parking for the Spring 2013 semester. The Above and Beyond award winners are: Dr. Marisol Murphree, Ms. Monica Fonseca, Ms. Rose Ann Lozano, and Ms. Margie

Garcia.

Dr. Marisol Murphree is one of our Fall 2012 Above and Beyond award winners in the Professional employee category. Dr. Murphree is an L.S.S.P. who leads our special education department. She is “truly a team player working closely with administrators, teachers, and staff” and “she provides teachers with quality recommendations which can positively impact a disabled students life.” We are fortunate to have Dr. Mairisol Murphree on our Lackland ISD team.

Monica Fonseca is one of our Spring 2012 Above and Beyond award winner in the professional category.

Ms. Fonseca is Math and Science (plus other areas) Facilitator for the elementary school. She is “willing to generate, discuss, and interpret DATA gathered after student testing” and “her willingness to stay after hours to discuss a student and offer suggestions is above and beyond.” We are proud to have Ms. Fonseca on our Lackland ISD team.

Rose Ann Lozano is our Fall 2012 Above and Beyond award winners in our para-professional category. Ms. Lozano is an elementary school classroom aide. Her nomination recommendation says, “Rather than take a break in her day, she chooses to spend her time helping teach 40+ kindergartens in the music room everyday.” We are proud to have Rose Ann Lozano as part of our Lackland ISD team.

Margia Garcia is our Fall 2012 Above and Beyond award winners in our auxiliary category. Margie is the district custodial supervisor. Her nomination recommendation says, “Margie always goes out of her way to make sure you are taken care of and your day goes smoothly”...”She makes one feel special and treats you with kindness; which is great to see!” We are proud to have Margie Garcia as part of our Lackland ISD team.

Thanks to all of the supervisors and co-workers who took the time to nominate these outstanding employees for going ‘Above and Beyond’ in providing as a great instructional environment for our

students.

Homecoming Dance! The High School Student Council sponsored the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night and it

was a splash! The scene was the Stacey cafeteria and the theme was 'Arboreal Oasis'.

Everybody had so much fun! The music was loud, everybody was pumped, and we were on it!

The dance had food, music by a DJ, awesome lights, and group of amazing people.

Ms. Kay’s 2nd grade class went to the San Antonio Museum of Art. Students learned about how animals were depicted in art in ancient China and

Egypt. Then they created our own clay art animal figures with the help of resident artist Bella, who works for SAMA.

This past Tuesday, actor Kyle Chandler visited Stacey High School to spend

the afternoon with Mr. Richard’s theater students. Mr. Chandler starred in the

TV series “Early Edition” and “Friday Night Lights”, for which he won the Lead

Actor Emmy, as well as the film Super 8. He has also had numerous

supporting roles in major motion pictures including Zero Dark Thirty and

Broken City, both in theaters now. Mr. Chandler answered students’

questions about the processes of acting and directing and about his career in

theater, television, and film. After the question and answer session, Mr.

Chandler graciously stayed to take photos, sign autographs, and chat with

the students. Special thanks go out to the Brown family for organizing the

visit. It was a spectacular experience for everyone who attended.

FANTASY FOOTBALL FINALE

Well, the big game is this weekend, and the Fantasy Football club ends another football

season. We had a great year with lots of changes.

1.Where do you come from? My family is from Newport, Rhode Island, and I was raised in Norwood, Massachusetts. My

grandfather, Alva Nordstrom's family, is from Sweden, and my grandmother's family is from Italy. At 17, I went off to college at

Fitchburg State on cross-country/track and academic scholarships.

2.What do you like about Stacey? After visiting several high schools in the San Antonio area, I enjoy the safety here on base

and the level of commitment the teachers put forth to provide quality instruction for the students. I believe that high expectations,

strict guidelines, and universal standards influence the academic achievement of its students. I am impressed with the curriculum,

and I believe that all students that attend Stacey should be truly grateful for the services provided to them.

3.Why did you choose to teach? After working in the corporate environment (in sales and marketing) in southern California

throughout my twenties, I realized that it was time to "give back" much of what I had learned in college. I am now working on my

PhD in Business and Technology and hope to teach students in the future the significance of math and science principles, as well

as the necessity to incorporate technology in their research and development projects.

4.What subject would you like to teach? I intend to teach math or science at the middle school or high school levels. After

acquiring several years of teaching experience, I intend to move on to teach at a college or university.

5.What other places have you lived? After my freshman year at Fitchburg State College, I moved to southern California and

attended National University in La Jolla, California, where I got my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. I lived in Orange County,

California for 12 years, and then lived in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years. I have lived in Texas since March 2012.

6.If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? After traveling to Europe in 2008, and visiting Paris, Venice,

Rome and Belgium, I would love to one day teach young Italian students in the Alps. My husband and I love skiing, running, and

cycling, so I think that area would be ideal. I would also love to visit Scandinavia.

7.What was your favorite running event in high school? This is a tough question. I started running at 12 years old and as a 13

year old freshman in high school, I loved cross country. Something about running the trails in the woods, dodging the opponents

and chasing down the number 1 runner was exhilarating. I also loved running indoor track at the Boston University indoor track,

which was a raised track that seemed to "bounce" on the edges. I ran the 800m, 1000m and the one mile so I was able to work on

speed for cross country. Outdoor track wasn't my favorite, something about the heat in New England and the humidity...sure got

hot in May and June!

8.What marathons have you run? I ran the Marine Corps Marathon on Camp Futenma in Okinawa Japan in 2010 and came in 3rd

place for women. I ran the Hard Corps Marathon in San Clemente, California in 2009. I am running the Huntsville Marathon in

February.

9.What's your favorite part about running? I love running long distance because it seems to allow me to sift through all

my thoughts about life, my family, the world we live in, current social issues, throughout the hours I run. I seem to

"sort everything out" because life can at times present challenges, stress, triumphs and achievements. Especially

during marathons, 26.2 miles is a great deal of time to organize your thoughts and focus on future goals. I believe with

the increase in technology, the amount of time the average person spends "creatively thinking" is minimized by all the

social media, and technological outlets we so often indulge ourselves with, i.e. what would life really be like without

Hollywood or Apple products?

10.If you could have one superpower what would it be? Why? I have to say this would be the ability to capture space/time to travel

beyond our current limits. After Sputnik, the 1960's revolutionized our advancements in space engineering. Only in the last quarter-

century have we really started to consider the various elements/resources (both natural and man-made) needed to propel our

spacecrafts further into space, particularly via nuclear power. So, the superpower I would have would be to create via alchemy the

combination of chemical components to propel our spacecraft further into space, beyond our galaxy to venture forth in time...that

old time capsule theory and "Back to the Future" still captivates my imagination. Do you realize that you'd have to bring infants into

space because they'd be 70 by the time you reached that area in space beyond our current limits?

Ok, one more superpower...what if, just by chance, via electrical charge to the brain and bloodstream, all those who were dead could

be revived? What a power that would be...a friend from Mexico once told me his grandfather actually had this capability. Only

doctors know!

Libraries are COOL!!

Elementary students have certainly enjoyed the stories, lessons, and FUN activities this week as they learned

about penguins! Many fascinating facts were revealed as Mrs. Robinette shared library books, videos, and even

hands-on discoveries using the globe. Students especially enjoyed the life-size cutouts of various penguins with

many discovering that the Emperor penguin is taller than they are!
