    Chinese New Year

Chinese people all around the world love to celebrate the

Spring Festival, which is an important event for all.

The great traditional festival often starts on thelast day of the old year in the lunar calendar andlasts until the tenth day of the new year. Duringthis long holiday, people have a lot of fun, but themost famous and traditional experience ismaking dumpling.

Making dumpling is not only an ancient custom,it has over a thousand years of history, but it isalso very popular. Almost every family will makedumpling to celebrate the Spring Festival. I was

quite surprised when I found out that we wouldbe taking part in this activity in Shelton this year.

On a Sunday afternoon,I went to the schoolcanteen to make dumpling with the otherstudents and Miss May. The Auntie who works

in the canteen made the casing of the dumplingusing flour and water, then we made the body ofdumpling by stuffing the meat and wrappingthem perfectly .Some of us got the opposite ofwhat we wanted ,we expressed our creativityand talent by making dumpling into many weirdshapes. Some of them were similar to some-thing that had been chewed. Only the Auntieand Miss May did a good job. Our results werereally funny.

We made a total of nearly 200 dumpling and weate them for dinner that very evening. We werevery happy to partake in the interesting activityand took some photos as keepsake. All in all, itwas a nice experience in our Spring Festivalholiday.

Let me tell you We Prefects are a group of students who areselected by Teachers and approved by our School Principalto maintain students discipline and make sure school rulesare obeyed.Being a prefect, a leader, means that you accept theresponsibility to be a role model among students.

When I was told that I was selected as the Head Girl, my firstfeelings were of shock and panic. I had never being a leaderbefore and I did not think that I qualified enough to be theHead Girl.

But then I thought, well the Teachers have trust in me I willnot let them down. This gave me courage and strength.

After a period of time, I found that being a leader is not ashard as I thought. I started to gain confidence and realizedthat I can be a good leader. I became more hardworking thanbefore and stopped complaining about going to schooleveryday because I know that I need to be a good examplefor other prefects.

As the Head Girl of Shelton High School, I realized that some people might not

even know who a prefect is, leave alone what they do.

I really appreciate our principal, Mr. Teh and Ms Melanie for giving me this opportunity. Also, I want to thank our Head boy and my ColleaguePatrick Samuel, our Board Chairman, Chin Pong. They are the ones who encouraged me in giving me confidence about being the Head Girl.

Being the Head Girl of Shelton High School is carrying a lot of responsibilities BUT it is fun.

This is the first year our school has Prefectorial Board, I wish that we can be the role model for those prefects who will take theseresponsibilities from us in the the future.

In my Multimedia module, I learnt about design, lines, shapes, spaces, values, textures and colour. I also learnt how to use softwares which allowme to edit and manipulate videos, photos, sound and html. I was taughthese skills by my lecturer.

I used all of my skills which I learnt with the above programs to create afilm about FREEDOM for my assignment. I combined 2 separate images

to create an effect like I was in a Langkawi beach with a picture of my selfwhich I took in Singapore. I applied video techniques like a crawl ordissolve to make my video appear nicer and to make it look moreprofessionally done. I even added in sound effects like adjusting andcutting a music clip to complement my video.

I was taught various editing and designing skills with the help of programs like Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Audacity and AdobeDreamweaver. We live in a society where designing plays a major role in our lives. Every advertisement or picture we see was designed by anindividual to capture someones attention.

We have seen this logo at least a thousand times. But, how many us have actually noticed an arrow in it? (Between E and x)

It is logos like this and intricate advertisements that keep me hooked onto designing. With Adobe Photoshop, I was able to learn how to puttogether an album cover in a few hours. With just a few clicks, a change of colour, some shadows, textures and a few lines, I was able to imitatean iTunes wallpaper with a more personal touch.

Just a few weeks back, I was doing the Multimedia module in the AdvancedDiploma of Mass Communications.

I love designing as I am able to share with someone, myidea and what I see from where I am standing. I am evenable to beautify a person or place by removing certain

flaws or adding more colour and life to the picture. I alsofind it fascinating how the amount of white space used, the curve of a letter, texture, font sizes and colours canwork together to form something so detailed, clever andbeautiful my very own masterpiece I might say.
