Stacey At UT Austin
A Day Spent Touring UT at Austin
By Rianna Fisher
On Saturday, March 2, 2013, Ms. Nicholson and Ms. Duron took some of the eighth graders to the University
of Texas at Austin for a campus visit. It was very fun and informative. Upon arriving to the campus it was very big
and had a lot of green grass and flowers that were beautiful to look at. We started with a tour of the football field,
where the Longhorns play their games. We stopped by the campus novelty shop which was filled with a lot of
longhorn items such as shirts, hats, stuffed animals, and other longhorn items. From there we went to the dorms and
classrooms. It was cool to see how students who stayed on campus lived and how the dorms were set up. I liked the
way they looked and Emily, our wonderful tour guide, said she made lots of friends because of the way the dorms
were set up. The classrooms were huge and could hold a lot of students. We went to the Journalism classroom and
learned a lot of interesting facts about how journalism is a huge part of the current events that go on in the world
today. We learned that there are many different types of journalism studies, such as magazine, newspaper, and
internet. We stopped by the campus radio/music station, KUT/KUTX. They do all sorts of things like interviews,
report the news, and play their own music and even have live bands play. Next, we participated in a few activities
they had planned for us. Most of the activities involved engineering and science topics like “How to Make a Lemon
Battery”, “How We Get Oil from Oil Wells”, and “The Composition of Cornstarch.” We completed our tour with a
final walk back across campus enjoying the view of the landscape and the beautiful flowers and green grasses. It
ended as a good day. We were able to gain knowledge about going to college and understanding what life is like at a
university.
Ms. Razloznik’s 3rd class accepted a generous donation of $500 on behalf of Lackland Elementary from the Warrior Brotherhood Motorcycle Club.
