AAPS Partnership with PETBARNAAPS is delighted to announce a new partnership with PETBARN Bayswater. Theaim of this partnership is to aid in the successful rehoming of our shelter cats. Overpopulation has seen many unwanted cats dumped and due to the large amounts, make it difficult for shelters to rehome them all. This partnership is greatly

appreciated and AAPS looks forward to working with PETBARN to rehome cats thatcome into our care.

Featured dog - Narla Tag 34545Great Dane xFemale18 months

    Featured Cat Saxon

Narla was surrendered to us becauseher owner could no longer keep her.Shes a bright, energetic & playful girl

who will respond beautifully to training(although she knows some basiccommands). She enjoys going for

walks & she is housetrained. Shewould suit an active adult family or afamily with teens.

    Saxon was surrendered to us

because his owner was too ill to take

care of him. He is a quiet,

    sometimes shy gentleman who will

    blossom in a peaceful environment.

He is well mannered with other cats.

    RAVENs STORY

I was put in a pen and people used to come look at me and all the other dogs. I started to worry because I heard someone

say that finding a new home was not going to be easy as I lookedtoo much like those dogs that had recently been

classed as dangerous dogs by the Victorian Parliament.

As time went passed and so did most of the people looking to adopt and the Shelter decided to arrange a foster home for

me. I was fostered out a couple of times to foster parents that were very kind to me and helped me to get away from the

shelter environment, however both times my foster parents were unable to keep me for a number of reasons.

One Saturday morning when I was being returned to the shelter another guy had volunteered to foster me. It was now

about 5 months since I first came to the Shelter and although I was happy, I was also hoping that I could find my forever

home. I was very happy when I reached my foster dads home and almost immediately tried their doggie door, as it was

just the right size. I had a dog basket but was also allowed to sleep anywhere I wanted except for the bedrooms.

In November my new dad was planning to return me to the shelter when my new mum said they would find it difficult

living without a dog, so it was at that point I realised I got my chance and had finally found my forever home.

Since then they have only been away without me a couple of times and I stay with Karin at Rosebud. For the last two years

in July we go away as a family to Merimbula on the NSW coast, and as you see from the picture I love to relax after a runon the beach and take in the sun.

Where did I get the name RAVEN? Sue the A.W.C (Animal Welfare Coordinator) at the Shelter looked at my black shinny

coat and thought Ravenwas a good name for me. When I go back to the shelter for my annual check-up Sue always gives

me kisses. Through the dedication, patience and care provide to me I was one of the lucky ones who got a second chance.

If you can learn anything from my story please make sure your parents keep your microchip details current as many

animals share similar stories to me. Ive listed the details you can pass on to your parents to make sure they do this.

Owners can check microchip details at any vet clinic or shelter andcontact information for the main microchip registries arelisted below

    National Pet Register 1300 734 738www.petregister.com.au Central Animal Records 03 9706 3187www.car.com.auAustralian Animal Registry 02 9704 1450 www.aar.org.au

I was born in April 2006 but dont remember

much until I was brought into the Shelter with a

badly broken leg in April 2011 aged just 5years.

Even though I had a microchip trying to contactmy owner wasnt successful, as like many

owners when they move they forgot to update

    new address and contact details.

What was the Shelter going to do with me?

There was no one to pay for the surgery to fix

my leg. The vet checked me out and although I

was in pain I did not complain so they decided to

invest time and money in me. After a thorough

investigation the leg was too badly damaged to

repair so it was removed. Like most dogs I

recovered fairly quickly and now without anypain managed to walk ok on three legs. The

shelter was still trying to find my owner by

putting my picture in the local paper but without

    success.

    What happens now?

TIPS FROM THE AAPS ON CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES

Christmas is a special time of year and it should be a great time for your furry friend too. Here are our top tips to help keep

your pet happy and healthy this Christmas.

    1. Avoid human food

We commonly see pets that have over indulged during the Christmas period so PLEASE resist feeding your pet ham, turkey

or fatty left overs - they can cause tummy upsets and pancreatitis. Keep all chocolate and fruit laden Christmas cake out of

reach and NEVER feed your pet cooked bones.

    2. Watch out for potential hazards

Be on the lookout for things your pet might find interesting and tasty! Christmas ornaments, electrical wires, ribbon, string

and wrapping paper can all cause a problem if ingested. Candles and burning oils are also dangerous. Remember thatingestion of stems, stamen or the flowers of Christmas lilies can cause kidney failure in cats.

    3. Make plans for your pet

Give your pet plenty of love and attention over Christmas - it is a hectic time of year and your pet will pick up on this. Make

sure you plan out some fun for your pet on Christmas Day. Stuff their stockings with a new toy to keep them occupied

during the day - we have some great treats and Christmas presents available - ask us for more ideas!

4 Fireworks - how to de stress your dog

Music can help distract your dog during fireworks

New Year's Eve almost always involve explosions. Fireworks and firecrackers might help us celebrate the holiday but it canbe a very nerve-wracking experience for your dog.

There are several tips for helping your dog survive the noise:

    1. Keep your dog indoors during fireworks. Even calmer dogs may get spooked and run away, jump over a fence or dig out

    2. Make sure they are wearing an up to date identification tag and are micro chipped, just in case they do escape. If you

have moved or your contact details have changed recently, make sure you update your records with the database that

your pooch's microchip is registered with

    3. Place them in an interior room with a television or radio turned up so that they are distracted and the noise is dulled

    4. If possible have one of their family stay with them during the celebrations

    5. Make sure all windows are closed and all exits are secure

    6. Dogs prefer a small, dark and secure place to retreat - a blanket over a coffee table can work well

    7. Try not to reward and soothe nervous and anxious behaviour - otherwise your dog's pattern of behaviour is reinforced

    8. If your dog suffers from severe fireworks anxiety speak to us about prescribing a mild sedative to help your dog relax

    during this particular period.

We can also offer advice on desensitisation to fireworks AND thunderstorms, as well as coats and pheromone plug-ins that

can help keep those nerves at bay. Speak to one of our friendly staff for more information.
