Naval Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay conducted a simulated active shooter

exercise, Feb. 3, NS Guantanamo Bay Emergency Manger

Officer Joseph McCullough said, “We perform drills like this as part of a continuous improvement process to ensure that (a): our current tactics and techniques are still valid, and (b): It allows responding forces to build ‘muscle memory’ which will allow them to perform more efficiently in the event that something like this happens for real.”

The event included participation from the Naval Security Forces, NAVSTA Fire and Emergency Services, and the US Naval Hospital.

The event took place at the Weapons building. The building has two floors which caused the security response team to move quickly and efficiently to locate the shooter and secure the building.

Throughout their movements inside the building the security response team made sure to forward their information to the command center who then forwards the information to the emergency and medical services.

NAVSTA Fire and Emergency Services and the U.S. Naval Hospital took their places in the exercise as they answered the security response’s team of the situation inside the

building, any victims of the incident and their location as to speedily respond with medical care and transportation.

“Today’s drill was to evaluate the Naval Station’s capability to respond to an active shooter incident,” commented McCullough. “Overall, responding forces performed excellently, but as I mentioned earlier there is always room to improve on processes.”

Once the exercise was completed it was imperative that the various departments debrief and go over the issues and areas where more training is needed.

For a diverse community such as NS Guantanamo Bay, made up of military, civilian and foreign nationals it is important that everyone knows what to do in the event of a real active shooter scenario.

“It’s important to remember that an Active Shooter incident can happen anywhere and at any time,” reminds McCullough. “This includes public areas such as the NEX, so it is important to keep family members aware of what they should do if they are in an area when an active shooter event begins.”
