1.) Division 05 Judging Committee Application - Every year, members of Division 05 will apply for division level contests. As such, there is a need for people to judge these applications to determine who wins the award. Therefore, I will need individuals to apply to become part of the Division Judging Committee and spend one day judging applications. Volunteer hours are provided if selected to be part of the committee. If you are interested, please fill out the form below. Please share this volunteer opportunity with the general membership. Information will be sent out to those selected. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDRNY3FXTTVBLTd4aXlmeTdVTjhpM3c6MQ#gid=0 2.) Division 05 North Mascot Interest Survey - It has been declared that Division 05 South will inherit the current division mascot, the Trojans. Therefore, there will be a vote at the next DCM for Division 05 North to determine the new mascot. 3.) Division/District/International Contests - Reminder that there are contests available at various levels to apply for. These contests are great for recognizing all the hard work you have done and for building an impressive college resume. Plus, you will be recognized on stage at DCON 2013. Check out available contest at: http://cnhkeyclub.org/recognition/contests. Contests are available to recognize members, officers, clubs, service projects, etc. District and International contest applications are due on February 8th while Division contest applications are due to me by January 30th. These applications require time and effort, so please begin them as soon as possible. Please share this great opportunity with the general membership at your next club meeting. 4.) Club Officer Elections - This is a reminder that all clubs will need to have their club elections finished and selected new officers by the end of January or the mid-February at the latest. An email will be sent out later to collect new officers contact information. This deadline is to ensure that new officers have plenty of time to transition, register for convention, and also officer training conference. Please make this a priority. 5.) DCON Preparation - This is a reminder that DCON is coming up on March 22nd-24th at the Anaheim Convention Center. Reminder that only dues paid members are allowed to attend DCON. DCON does cost a lot and thus I recommend that each club do fundraisers to try to subsidize the cost for the attendees. Registration alone cost $163 for on time, and $203 for late registration. This does not include hotel or transportation fees which will make cost well over $200. Therefore, please try to plan some fundraising events to diminish the costs. Also, if you are interested in participating in the DCON talent show and performing on stage, please begin to prepare as you will later on be required to submit an audition tape to determine whether you have been chosen to perform. Please make these performances appropriate. Share this great opportunity with the general membership. 1

Key Club members from Minarets High School left town in the wee early hours of the morning on Sunday, Dec. 30, and made their way south to Pasadena, California. What was their mission? These 9 young leaders were off to decorate floats for the renowned Tournament of Roses Parade. Float decorating Key Club members include Hayden Righter, Michaela Brost, Dakota Kudra, Sienna Pillsbury, Janina Reinartz, Kelea Kamalani, Raegan Melfe, Rachel Olivas and Grant Hall. Minarets teacher and Key Club Advisor Therese Righter, and parent volunteer Saroya Melfe, were on hand in Pasadena to chaperone the students. "We are all working on the Department of Defense (DOD) Korean War Memorial Float," reported Righter from the field in Pasadena, where students were hard at work. The DOD is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War with a float that reflects the Korean War monument in Washington, D.C. "Hayden and Michaela are about 15 feet in the air on the back of a float, placing individual roses and orchids in the trees," continued Righter. "Other members are placing red and white roses on the flag stripes, gluing silver leaves on the soldier's coats and gluing individual carnation petals on the sign." Sophmore Dakota Kudra was one of the students who braved the cold and long drive to help Kiwanis International and float organizers in Pasadena. She has been a Key Club member for about 2 years. "I heard about it from a friend of mine and it's really good for the community. I thought it sounded like fun and a good thing to do for the community and everybody around school," Kudra said. The students traveled to Pasadena with other Key Club kids from around the state. Key Club is an international student-led organization that gives members "opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership," according to the Minarets Key Club Facebook page. The Minarets group has participated in a number of volunteer activities, many related to the Kiwanis organization it ultimately feeds into. "I never saw myself doing this," Kudra reflected, referring to volunteer activities in general, "but once you get into it and you're a full participant, it's really fun and you feel really good about yourself when you're helping other people." The Tournament of Roses Parade, which dates back to 1890, steps off in Pasadena at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, and includes bands, equestrian groups and world-famous floral floats. The parade is televised and watched in over 200 countries. Written by Kellie Flanagan, Minarets High School

Rose Float (cont.)

This year was my first year going to Pasadena for the Rose Floats with Key Club. It was a great experience being able to be a part of the making process and looking on TV the next day, seeing the work we did. It was also a great way to bond with the division and meeting new Key Clubbers from our district. -Tracy Liu

It was a great experience-- seeing the whole Kiwanis family work together and build something for an amazing cause. - Eric Kor

On December 22nd, Buchanan Key Club went to Downtown Fresno to

help volunteer with Hands On Central California wrapping presents for

the Hope for the Holidays event the next day. Every year, Hands On

puts on an event called Hope for the Holidays, where homeless

families or the less fortunate are able to have a delightful holidays

with presents for the kids, activities, entertainment from various

groups around the community, and delicious food served by volunteers.

Every year, Buchanan Key Club volunteers at the event, and everyone

always loves the event, being able to help families during the holiday

times.

Lending a Hand

On December 26th, 4 officers from Buchanan Key Club did a

Kiwanis Takeover at our sponsoring Old Town Clovis Kiwanis

Club at Classic Catering. It was a great experience being

able to be at one of their meetings to see how things are

run. Us officers were in charge of the meeting, conducting

the activities such as "Happy Dollar", where for some

donation, Kiwaniians talk about a happy event that

happened, and more. We also gave them a club update on what

our club had been up to such as fundraisers and events.

Cards for Soldiers

Every year around the Holiday season, Clovis North key clubbers gather together for one or two days after

school for a couple hours to make 'Holiday Compassion Cards' for US soldiers. Compassion Cards are essentially

regular greeting cards that us key clubbers decorate and make beautiful for our US soldiers to enjoy. Often, many of

us here in the cities of Fresno and Clovis have the chance to experience Christmas and New Years with our own

families. For many of these American soldiers, the holiday season is spent in a camouflaged uniform most likely in a

country far from the United States. So to help provide a sense of community for these dedicated men and women,

Clovis North key clubbers write nice notes on well decorated cards that, hopefully, bring a smile to their faces. Even

though they may never personally know the key clubbers that wrote the many cards for them, it brings us volunteers

great satisfaction to know that a few simple cards made someone's day a little better.

UNICEF Trick or Treating

This year, Clovis North Key Club tried something new. Although many key clubs have already done it in the

past, the annual UNICEF "Trick-or-Treating" is both a charitable and fun way to give back to the community. The

process is very simple. Essentially, everyone who wishes to participate is simply given a cleverly designed, small

cardboard box that has a small opening for cash and coins to be placed in. As people go around trick-or-treating,

participants pick up the usual candy from door to door, but they also politely ask the people handing out candy if they

would be interested in donating to UNICEF to help contribute towards the ELIMINATE project. The ELIMINATE

project is a Kiwanis based project that is geared towards helping to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus: a lethal

disease to many infants, especially in third world countries. Individually, the funds that Clovis North key clubbers

raised may not be much. But combined with the efforts of countless other key clubbers around the nation, they have

substantially helped contribute to a bigger goal.

Conclave 2013

Division 5's conclave was held on Wednesday, January 9th in the lecture hall at Clovis North High

School. Conclave is a single "meeting" held every year where key clubbers seeking to become a

divisional lieutenant governor give speeches and explain to fellow key clubbers why they think they are

the best candidate for the highest division position. Conclave literally translates to "a private meeting"

in Latin (Or the assembly of cardinals for the election of a pope...) and involves key clubbers from every

club in the division. It was mandatory that 2 officers/key clubbers of each club be in attendance, as

these 2 students will be the ones who cast votes for the next lieutenant governor. Overall, Conclave is

arguably the most important, yet most fun, meeting of the entire year. Not only do key clubbers get to

eat a delicious dinner beforehand, but they also get to meet fellow division key clubbers from schools

that may not always be in attendance at every event/DCM throughout the year. This year, Eric Kor and

Caroline Ba ran for LTG for D5 North. Congratulations to Eric Kor for being elected LTG for Division

5 North for the 2013-2014 term. D5 South is seeking a suitable LTG. If interested please email

The biggest key club event of the year is finally here! DCON,

short for District Convention, is the largest gathering of key

clubbers of the district region in one area. Cali-Nev-Ha's 2013

DCON will take place during March 22-24 in Anaheim, CA this

year. DCON is specifically designed to allow key clubbers from

all over the California, Nevada, and Hawaii region to gather

together and celebrate the accomplishments made through

community service in the past school year. This year's theme is

"A Million Waves of Service." It emphasizes the idea that through

one service event at a time, we can slowly but steadily generate a

ripple effect that inspires other people to serve their community as

well. Divisions from all across the region will be able to

showcase their unique ways of serving the community. In

addition, there are many chances to get recognized at the

individual, club, and division level. If you have been involved

enough in your school's key club, you could be eligible to both get

recognized and win scholarships! Another thing, it is highly

encouraged for all key clubbers to go, regardless of whether or not

you are an officer. For all key clubbers, informative leadership

workshops on how to lead and organize your school's key club

better are held each day: a major event of DCON. If you are

interested in running for office eventually, these workshops will

be very helpful. On top of celebrating each other's

accomplishments in the world of service, DCON is a time to have

FUN. From friendly 1 on 1 cheer battles to entire division spirit

battles, you will have a blast engaging with other key clubbers.

Many cherish the time spent over these few action-packed days,

as there is not another day in the year where this type of event

occurs. Also, there are certain "dress days", such as business

casual and business formal. It's a great time to get fancy with your

suits and snazzy looking dresses. Overall, DCON is something

you do not want to miss. It's probably the most memorable

experience I have gone through in the key club world, and

regardless of what grade you are in, it will be a great way to end

your school year with a bang. Go to DCON! You won't regret it.
