Pastor’s Message: WHOSE AUTHORITY? Many door-to-door proselytizers have good inten-tions. They want to convert you to the “truth”—as they see it. They believe the Bible is the sole authority for the Christian faith. Some are taught that Catholics are prohibited from reading the Bible. However, not only do we have full access to the scriptures, we hear them proclaimed every time we celebrate Mass. In today’s readings Jesus and Moses are recognized as speaking and acting with the authority of God. Both Jesus and Moses acted as a bridge between the people and God. For us the scriptures are a bridge for God’s truth, but so are the sacraments and the experience of the Church—what we call Tradition. It is part of our re-sponsibility as Jesus’ disciples to listen attentively at Mass, to read scripture prayerfully for ourselves, and to learn more about the Bible through reading, studying, and learning with others. Gospel: Mark 1: 21-28 In this reading Jesus teaches and acts with authority. In this first miracle recorded by Mark, Jesus shows his power over the forces of evil. Even the evil spirit gives witness to Jesus, recognizing him as "the Holy One of God" and submitting to his commands. We should learn to trust in Jesus and his loving care for us. We should listen each day for his quiet voice in our hearts, urging us to trust him and to do what he asks. 1.)What are our attitudes toward authority in our lives? Are our attitudes toward Jesus the same as or different from our attitudes toward other authorities? Does Jesus "authorize" our thoughts and actions? How or when?

During Lent we join in pray-ing as a community, fasting in solidarity with the hungry, and giving to those most in need. Catholic Relief Ser-

vice’s Operation Rice Bowl asks us to share with the needy the money we save by fasting or giving up something for Lent. Our support helps families around the world through CRS pro-jects for agriculture, clean water, edu-cation, and microfinance (which en-courages the growth of small busi-nesses) and health projects for moth-ers and children and those with HIV and AIDS. 25% of the money donated is used in our country. Please pick up a Rice Bowl at any church entrance, read the daily reflections, simple recipes, and the stories of our brothers and sisters around the world. Please return your Rice Bowl donation to the Parish office before Easter. Thank you. World Day for Consecrated Life:

In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a world day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to

the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd but is celebrated in parishes the weekend of February 7-8 to highlight the gifts of consecrated persons to the Church. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symboliz-ing Christ who is the light of the world. As a candle brings light into darkness, so too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all people. This weekend, please pray for all those women and men who have made commitments in the conse-crated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and re-spond generously to God’s gift of their vocation .

For your Information: Ash Wednesday: This year Ash Wednesday will be on February 18th. Masses will be at 6:30am, 8:00am, 11:00am (school Mass), 5:30pm and 7:30pm (Spanish). Abstinence and fasting are to be ob-served. Lenten Regulations: ABSTINENCE: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on all Fridays during Lent. FASTING: All those who are 18 and older, until their 60th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Fri-day. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, suffi-cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together, they should not equal a full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are al-lowed.

The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be seriously af-

fected. People in doubt about fasting or abstinence should consult a parish priest.
