    Monday-Friday ● 8:30 a.m.

A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.”

Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.”

The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything,

    but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;

that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.

He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.

He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

    Dear Parish Family,

Believe it or not, Lent begins this Wednesday! With the start of this

Holy Season comes the annual question: What are you giving up

for Lent? We fast form sweets, treats, and certain comforts as a

sacrifice, but also to make room so that we can feast on God

Himself. Besides the usual chocolate and deserts, here are some

additional suggestions for our Lenten fast.

Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ dwelling in them.

Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light.

Fast from words that put down; feast on phrases that build up.

Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.

Fast from anger; feast on patience.

Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism.

Fast from worry; feast on trust.

Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.

Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives.

Fast from dwelling on failures; feast on what is still possible.

Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayer.

Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.

Fast from always having to be busy; feast on peaceful stillness.

Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others.

Fast from discouragement; feast on hope.

Fast from indifference; feast on enthusiasm.

Fast from suspicion; feast on truth.

Fast from thoughts that weaken; feast on promises that inspire.

Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.

May our fasting this Lent make room for Jesus. May we push away

from what has become a habit or a crutch we lean on, so that we

can stand tall and free with the Risen Jesus!

    Love and prayers,

    Father Neil Sullivan

    Moments of Lenten Grace

PRAYER Catholics are encouraged to pray more during Lent.

In addition to Sunday Mass, all are encouraged to

participate in daily Mass, to celebrate the

Sacrament of Penance frequently, to do spiritual

reading, especially the study of Sacred Scripture,

and to participate in parish Lenten devotions (the

Stations of the Cross). Prayer before the Blessed

    Sacrament is especially recommended.

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Catholics, age 14 and older, must abstain from meat

on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of

Lent. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics,

from age 18-59, must fast, limiting themselves to one full

    meal and two smaller meals.

ALMSGIVING Moved by the sacrifice of Christ, we are called to

combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to the poor

the money saved by eating, drinking or buying less

as we rely more upon God’s abundant grace.

    Lenten Guidelines

    Father Neil Sullivan

    February 2021

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Each Lent, through penance and interior renewal, we climb the great mountain of Easter. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving help us grow in our personal relationship with Jesus. As a community united in faith, hope, and love, we make the Lenten journey together, helping each other along the way.

This flyer details Lenten activities here at Good Shepherd. I encourage you to share in these wonderful opportunities that prepare us to enter the mystery of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

Lent is a time to reflect, repent, and renew. Above all it is a time of grace. Grace that is healing and hope-filled. Let us experience that grace together!

I look forward to making this Lenten Journey with you!

    Pastor

Daily Readings Nourish yourself this Lent with a daily

  • February 24, 2021 • End of Life Issues • Sister Mary Joseph Albright, SCC

Sister Mary Joseph Albright is a Sister of Christian Charity. As an educator, spiritual director, bereavement

facilitator, and Mission Integration Officer for Penn State Holy Spirit, Sister will give perspective on the relevant

issues surrounding end-of-life that we may be thinking about and preparing for.

March 3, 2021• Reaching the NONES • Alicia Spelfogel

Have your children stopped believing in God? Are your grandchildren being raised without knowing Jesus?

Are you afraid of where our seemingly God-less society is heading? Sociologists have seen a steady rise of

people identifying with no faith or religious tradition whatsoever. Described as “Nones” they are 23% of the

population and outnumbering Catholics as the largest “religious” identification group according to Bishop

Robert Barron. Alicia Spelfogel, Assistant Catholic Campus Minister at Millersville University, will share her

insights on how we can evangelize the ‘nones’. Having “been there and done that” and now working to

bring young hearts to Jesus, Alicia will help us understand the mindset of those who have lost their way and

how we can walk the journey with them back to knowing the Lord and His love.

March 10, 2021 • Lord, Teach Me How to Pray • Father Philip White, OFM Cap.

Most of us grew up learning our prayers but many never learned how to pray. Capuchin Father Philip White,

parochial vicar at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Harrisburg, will open the doors for us to what may

be a new way of praying. Our Lord wants to be in an intimate relationship with us and that begins with prayer.

Find out how to become more united with the Heart of Christ.

March 17, 2021 • Death with Dignity: Is It Really an Act of Compassion? • Bonnie Finnerty

Death With Dignity, euthanasia, and physician-assisted suicide all refer to deliberate action taken with the

intention of ending a life in order to relieve suffering. In many countries, euthanasia is against the law; in others

it is legal and acceptable. In the United States, the law varies between states and has long been a

controversial and emotional topic. Bonnie Finnerty, Education Director for Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation,

will discuss death with dignity, euthanasia, and assisted suicide. She will explain current laws, realities of the

action, its scope, and successful ways to counter it through life-affirming, peaceful action.

March 24 • Trusting God in this Valley of Tears • Scott Anthony

How can we trust in God with child-like faith at every moment of our lives? Do we believe in God’s love for us

in the midst of trials and suffering? Scott Anthony, will combine humor and real life stories to connect with us

while drawing us deeper into the beautiful Truths of our Faith with the goal to help open our hearts to the love

and mercy of Jesus Christ especially in the challenging times we’re living in. Scott Anthony is the Director of

Young Adult Ministries at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, York. He has conducted thousands of retreats in over

40 U.S. dioceses; Scott’s enthusiasm for working with families will inspire us as we journey toward Christ this Lent.

Holy Mass • ON-SITE • 5:30 p.m. To provide another opportunity for Daily Mass during Lent, each Wednesday of Lent

there will be a Mass at 5:30 p.m. All are welcome to gather to be fed at the Table of

the Word and the Table of the Eucharist.

    Wednesday Evenings This Lent

Simple Soup • TO-GO • 5:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. To help with the Lenten Fast, a simple freshly-made soup will be available on

Wednesdays for pick-up in Narthex A for you to bring home for light Lenten supper.

The soup of the week will be published in the Sunday bulletin. A free-will offering will be

accepted for Operation Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services program that feeds the

    hungry across the globe.

Hot Topic Speaker • ON-LINE • 6:45 p.m. Join us on Wednesday evenings on our online Campus (Facebook and YouTube) as

gifted speakers share insights and the Catholic teaching on relative social issues and

living the Christian Life. There will be opportunities to ask questions and join the

conversation. Our speakers and Hot Topics are:

    FEBRUARY 24 THROUGH MARCH 24

  • 1. Be cheerful. It’s seriously important. Smile for goodness sake.

    2. Say the Our Father before you get out of bed each day.

    3. Read the Gospels. Start with Mark … it’s the shortest.

    4. Learn a new prayer. There are millions of them!

    5. Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Doesn’t have to be

cover to cover – just pick a spot and jump around if you want.

    6. Try going to Mass on a weekday (in addition to Sunday).

    7. Attend Mass like it’s your first Mass, your last Mass, your only Mass.

    8. Say the Rosary. It is a weapon. Wield it.

    9. Compliment someone who annoys you, and mean it.

    10. Go through your closet. Give to the poor the things you don’t

wear. Or even better, something you do wear.

    11. Take 10 minutes from screen time and use it for prayer. Prayer is

hard for you? Join the club. Difficult prayer is still prayer.

    12. Watch the a movie like Passion of the Christ or Jesus of Nazareth.

    13. Make an Act of Contrition every day. It’s not only for Confession.

    14. Go to Confession. Often. Jesus is waiting to forgive you!

    15. Don’t turn the radio on in the car. Silence is golden!

    16. Meditate on a crucifix. He did that for you!

    17. Visit the elderly. Reach out to that neighbor or family member.

    18. Pray the Stations of the Cross. Classic devotion for Fridays in Lent.

    19. Forgive someone who has hurt you. Let it go!

    20. Ask forgiveness from someone you may have hurt. Be humble!

    21. Befriend your guardian angel. They are always with you!

    22. Pray to Saint Joseph for your family and for the Church.

    23. Research your Patron Saint, either your name or occupation.

    24. Fast. It’s an essential practice of Christian life.

    25. Eucharistic adoration. Look at Christ while he looks at you.

    26. Opt to listen to nothing but Christian or gospel music only.

    27. Opt to not say anything negative to anyone about anything.

    28. Choose to say a prayer every time you get angry.

    29. Use your special gift/talent for a charity or someone less fortunate.

    Good Shepherd Catholic Parish

PRAYER OF A MARRIED COUPLE Lord God, we acknowledge Your greatness and our need for Your grace in our marriage. We thank You for the

gift You have given us in each other, this opportunity to love and be loved completely. We accept this beautiful

challenge and ask You to bless us. May our love encourage us to grow to be holier individuals, bringing out the

best in each other. Following Your example, Jesus, may we be quick to forgive, ready with a healing word or

touch. Teach us to speak to each other with charity and honesty. Help us avoid the temptation to take each

other for granted. Instead, remind us, day by day, to see each other as You see us. May we be as patient with

each other as You are with us. May our love be generous, reaching out beyond ourselves to all we meet. We

pray that they may meet You in us. Faith gives us courage, for we believe that the love that comes from You is

freeing and life-giving. Make our marriage strong and enduring. We rejoice that You have brought us together.

May we always be one in You. Amen.

PRAYER FOR A TROUBLED MARRIAGE Loving Father, I come before You with a heavy heart. My marriage is in trouble, and I need Your guidance and

closeness. Father, heal our hearts. Lord, make us compatible again, and move us closer together as we were

before. Father, shower us with Your love and give us the ability to love one another, care for one another, and

fulfill Your plan for us. God, keep us from causing the pain caused by careless, unnecessary words, and the harm

caused by emotional distance. Heal the division between the two of us. Make us one again. Amen.

PRAYER OF A SEPARATED OR DIVORCED PERSON Father, I belong to You. I place myself anew in Your hands and acknowledge You as Master and Lord of my life.

Grant me the gift of a forgiving heart and cleanse me of any anger, hostility or revenge. Heal my hurts and

wounds and teach me to rely on Your love. Grant me wisdom of heart and strengthen me by Your grace to move

on in faith, in trust and in love. Thank You Lord for Your love in my life. Amen.

PRAYER OF A WIDOW OR WIDOWER Father, my spouse – the love of my life – is now with You. We were created by You in order to return to You, and

for a portion of this journey, we were side-by-side. We shared joys and sorrows, happiness and difficulty. It was

beautiful, though not always easy. I thank You for all of it. Now, my spouse has gone and I am left alone. Give

him/her eternal joy, and give me the strength to say, thy will be done. And allow us to one day find each other

again in our eternal homeland. Mary, our mother of consolation, pray for us.

PRAYER OF AN ENGAGED COUPLE Lord, as we prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage, we come to ask what You desire from us. Guide us to know

Your will. May we look to Your love for us as our model of how we are to love each other. Show us how to nourish

and cherish each other as we would our own bodies. Bring Your strength to our weakness so that we might help

each other grow into people You created us to be. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with You and with each

other so that we might experience the fullness of Your love. Thank You for the gift of marriage so that we can

more fully understand Your love for us. Amen.

PRAYER TO FIND ONE’S SOULMATE Loving Father, You know that the deepest desire of my heart is to meet someone that I can share my life with. I

trust in Your loving plan for me and ask that I might meet soon the person that You have prepared for me.

Through the power of Your Holy Spirit, open my heart and mind so that I recognize my soulmate. Remove any

obstacles that may be in the way of this happy encounter, so that I might find a new sense of wholeness, joy and

peace. Give me the grace too, to know and accept, if You have another plan for my life. I surrender my past,

present and future into the tender heart of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

PRAYER OF A SINGLE PERSON Eternal God, from my mother's womb You have known and loved me more than I can ever know. I ask for the

courage to live a holy life, that Your hand guide my decisions and that Your mercy be extended when I seek my

own glory instead of Yours. I ask for the wisdom to know Your will for me, and like our Blessed Mother, I ask for the

strength to say yes. May I find You in every person I meet, and may my life so shine forth Your goodness and love

that each person may be led to You through Jesus, Your Son, who is Lord, forever and ever. Amen.
