Monmouth County RED MASS
Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. Our parish will be hosting a “Red Mass” for
judges, lawyers, and others engaged in the administration of justice and the legal profession in Monmouth County. We’ll be praying for all those involved in the legal sys-tem and asking the Holy Spirit to help and inspire all of us in our efforts for Justice. We are expecting a large attendance at this Mass. The church is likely to be crowded and the parking lot will have significantly more cars than usual. The Mass will be longer than usual. Please make your Sunday Mass plans accordingly on October 2.

Our Extraordinary Ministers made 14 communion/shut-in visits and 2 Stephen Ministry visits during this past week. We pray that we have helped to bring God’s love and peace to His people in need.
Suffering We pray Our Lord will open your minds to his blessed Word. We trust that Our Lord will teach us what we should know about suffering. We trust our knowledge will chase away any preconceptions and misconceptions, and let love animate the under-standing we gain from God’s love.

The Catholic bishops of New Jersey are responding vociferously and unanimously in opposition to a pro-abortion ad campaign recently conducted by a group calling itself Catholics for Choice. The abortion advocacy organi-zation placed full-page ads Sept. 12 in the print editions of more than 20 lo-cal and national publications, including Politico, the Nation, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Dallas Morning News and La Opinion. In New Jersey, the ad ran in The Star-Ledger and The Record (of Bergen County). Digital advertising was also included in the campaign, which featured a statement by a young woman who claimed to be Catholic and who condoned abor-tion. The ad aimed to portray the public funding of abortion as a social justice value. In an effort to communicate true Church teaching on the sanctity of human life and the abomination of abortion, the New Jersey bishops commissioned a campaign that will in-clude advertising in several daily newspapers and across diocesan me-dia outlets and other Church-based resources. The central image of the cam-paign features a photo of Pope Francis kissing a baby during his visit to Phila-delphia last fall. Taken by John Blaine, a freelance photographer for The Monitor, the photo originally was part of the Trenton diocesan newspa-per’s online coverage of the papal vis-
it. The ad lists several statements made by the Holy Father -- both when he was Cardinal Jose Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires and as Pope Francis -- about the sanctity of human life and every person’s call to protect life in the womb. The key message of the ad is: “You can not be Catholic and Pro-Abortion. The only ‘choice’ for Catho-lics is life.” The ads are set to run in The Star-Ledger and The Record Sept. 18. Similar responses were playing out across the country in the days fol-lowing Sept. 12. In a Sept. 14 state-ment, New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, who serves as chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities, stated, "Calling for taxpayer funding of abortion in the name of the Catholic faith" is "deceptive" and "extreme." He emphasized that the abor-tion advocacy group "is not affiliated with the Catholic Church in any way. It has no membership, and clearly does not speak for the faithful. It is funded by powerful private foun-dations to promote abortion as a method of population control." Multiple dioceses have used this opportunity to encourage Catholics and all people of good will to have an impact on social justice by supporting local pregnancy help centers. The Faith in Our Future (FIOF) committees of Cohort 17 have been meeting nu-merous times during the past
few weeks. They are currently working on com-ments received from the Diocese’s consulting firm in order to finalize the comprehensive rec-ommendation that Cohort 17 will be submitting to the Diocesan Planning Commission on Octo-ber 1. A more detailed update on FIOF’s pro-gress, status, and direction will be provided within the next two weeks. Please continue to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as the FIOF process continues and unfolds.

YOUTH GROUP COLLECTION
The Youth Group will be collecting items for a "Blessing Bag" that we will be putting together for the homeless. There is a complete item list provided: We will be stuffing the bags at our October 16th meeting. There will be a bucket at the back of the church with a "Blessing Bag" tag on it. The collection will be held un-til the weekend of October 8th and 9th. Handing out a Blessing Bag to someone gives you a very real way to meet their immediate needs by providing them with some basic supplies such as toiletries, water, food and warmth. Also included in the bag will be a scripture reading and a positive quote :)
FALL BIBLE STUDY
Our Fall Bible Study is in the third week of our ten-week program. We are looking at the major characters and events in the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures. We con-tinue to meet at these times and locations:

Wednesday at 11 am- Outreach Center In our on-going BIBLE IN PLAIN ENGLISH PILOT PROGRAM, this week, we meet Elijah and Elisha, who give insight into the role of the prophet in God's plan for His people. We meet in the Lower Church at 10:30 am and 7:30 pm. All materials are provided for all Bible Study sessions. Come see what it's all about--and bring a friend!

As the summer winds down and many of us are returning to our “regular routines,” please keep your parish in mind and the need for volunteers to help with our many parish ministries, activities, special events, etc. The parish’s Min-istry Fair Weekend (remember the big white tent that ate up our parking lot back in June!) resulted in several new sign-ups. We still need more helpers in areas such as ush-ers at Mass, collection counters, youth altar servers, adult altar servers, CCD teachers and teachers aides, St. Vincent de Paul Society, gardening, Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers, lectors, choir ..... the list goes on and on.
