Twenty– Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Parables demands careful reading. There is little detailed description about the characters in to-day’s gospel. It is never said that the rich man is wicked. We are never told that Lazarus badgers him for help which he actively refuses. Between them, however, lies an abyss that cannot be bridged. It is the abyss of unawareness and self-sufficiency. The anesthetized conscience of the rich man is no longer touched by the reproach of poverty. Thus we can understand Jesus’ warnings: “How hard it will be for the rich to go into the kingdom of God. Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven” (Luke 18:25). Sometimes we read on the door of elegant build-ings: “No soliciting”. What if the prohibition were found reversed at the threshold of the king-dom, “ The rich need not apply.” That is the pic-ture Luke seems to paint. Is there no redemption then for the rich? At the door of the kingdom there are no rich and poor. Both are saved by the word of God. That word reveals to men and women their radical in-terdependence. The self-sufficiency of the rich can blind them to the Lazarus at their gates. The affluence of our society can close our eyes to the cries of the third world. In neglecting their needs, we exclude ourselves from the table of the kingdom.

Dear Parishioners,

Pope Stops naming monsignors—Pope Francis has stopped granting priests the honorary title of “monsignor” in advance of an October meeting with several cardinals on possible reforms in the Catholic Church, the London-based Catholic weekly The Tablet has reported. According to The Tablet’s Rome correspondent Robert Mickens, Francis first made the decision in April shortly after his election as pope. The decision was also reported by the Rome daily Il Messagero. The title monsignor is an honorific of sorts normally granted to priests as a reward for service to the church or as a sign of some special function they serve in church govern-ance. The title is usually granted by the pope on the recommendation of the priest’s local bishop. Some have criticized the practice, saying it leads to an air of careerism in the church. Also the naming of monsignors is a way of making money or filling Vatican coffers. The cost for the honorific title is as follows as reported by the Catho-lic Weekly from London, The Tablet: $27,980 (US Dollars), £17,000 (British Pounds), €20, 700 Euros or ₤40,000,000,000 (Italian Lira). Can you imagine

the glee of an Italian Curial Official (Monsignor or Bishop or Archbishop working at the Vatican) receiving 40 Billion Italian Lira just for an ap-pointment of one monsignor . Many years ago the beloved Archbishop Sanchez received a letter from the Vatican noting as Archbishop of Santa Fe (already for many years) that he had never named any monsignors. The letter essentially pressured Archbishop Sanchez to name monsignors and essentially saying “We ex-pect you to name monsignors.” Forced to do thus he named a very faith-ful and good pastor and his vicar general a monsignor. Know that in the Church there are many good priests and pastors who have never desired the title and there are those who absolutely yearn for it (these are certainly devastated at this news from Good Pope Francis). Nor-mally the priest is not saddled with paying for the title. This usually comes from the coffers of the Diocese. How many bishops would actually take the funds out of their own pockets? The priests normally are responsible for ordering the unique soutaine or cassock with the distinctive monsigno-rial purple colored buttons, piping and water-stained silk cincture. This is normally done at Gammarelli (the official Papal Tailor) on the Via Santa Chiara in Rome near the Pantheon. This street and surrounding Gamma-relli are the shops that display in their windows and sell among other things, “Nun’s Underwear.” These shops must be patronized by the new conservative orders of nuns which have arose the past thirty five years. Truly, check it out with a stroll along Via Santa Chiara when in Rome. But I regress. Regarding being made a monsignor, a priest friend of mine was so upset when he was told this by his bishop. He commented that his bishop had never supported him and when the bishop was ready to retire suddenly saddled him with a title that he had to live with for the rest of his life. My friend refused to pay the Vatican for the honor (the money must have come from his bankrupt diocese) and he refused to buy the outfit. He still prefers to go by his title “Father” rather than “Monsignor.” Again, to the point that this practice has lead to careerism in the Church—there is the belief that one can get favored or advanced in their position if one is routinely contributing monies into the Vatican coffers. Bravo, Pope Francis!

A MORNING PRAYER WRITTEN BY ST. THERESE

O my God! I offer Thee all my actions of this day for the intentions and for the

glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I desire to sanctify every beat of my heart, my every thought, my simplest works, by uniting them to Its infinite merits; and I wish to make reparation for my

sins by casting them into the furnace of Its Merciful Love.

O my God! I ask of Thee for myself and for those whom I hold dear, the grace to fulfill perfectly Thy Holy Will, to accept for love of Thee the joys and sorrows of this passing life, so that we may one day

be united together in heaven for all Eternity. Amen.
