Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s gospel Jesus offers a warning about living selfishly in his parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. The Rich Man holds sumptuous feasts and dresses in fine clothes. But despite his affluence he does nothing to relieve the painful hunger and debilitating condition of his neighbor Lazarus. He neglects to love his neighbor as he loves himself and is sent to hell for his lifestyle and desire for self-gratification. The Rich Man repre-sents those who spend their money on their own per-sonal pleasures with no regard for sharing their material possessions with the poor and needy in their own neighborhood. Good stewards realize the practical im-plications of not only loving God, but loving their neigh-bor as they would love themselves. Who are the less fortunate in our neighborhood? Do we share a portion of our own blessings with them?

Gospel: Luke 16:19-31

Keep your eye on God's way of life.

Question for Children: Jesus teaches us to share

what we have with others. What do you have that you

are able to share?

Question for Youth: The Gospel story tells us that we

are judged by what we do or don’t do for the poor and

needy. How are you currently reaching out to those in

need? What more could you do?

Question for Adults: What choices can you or have

you made to balance your own life with those who are

homeless, poor and in need of assistance for daily

living? How does this Gospel reading inform you

about that?

The Mercy of Charity

The text today speaks of the sin of omission, Thoughtlessness, neglect, self-centeredness.

In this year of mercy I am brought to the idea Of charity or a way to counterbalance wrongs That I see all around me.

Through prayer and meditation, in the quiet, I await the spark of love to help me find where To best let my talent give compassion and Pray that I am doing the work best assigned To me.

I pray that you will open to the power of Compassion and find your gift and talent To heal those in need, all around you.

~Trudy Bledsoe
