Welcome!

We bid you a very warm welcome to our worship. As we gather in this sacred

space, silent prayer and reflection helps us to prepare for the service. We

acknowledge our presence is on the unceded territory of the Musqueam,

Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Listening devices are available for the

hearing impaired during the service; please contact one of our greeters.

Prelude Choral variations ‘Ein Feste Burg’ J. Pachelbel

Words of welcome

Please rise as you are able to sing our opening Hymn No. 362 in Common Praise.

1 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!

Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice;

tender to me the promise of his word;

in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

2 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name!

Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;

his mercy sure, from age to age the same;

his holy name the Lord, the mighty one.

3 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might!

Powers and dominions lay their glory by;

proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,

the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

4 Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word!

Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord

to children's children and forevermore!

Priest +The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,

be with you all.

All And also with you.

Priest Let us pray.

All Almighty God,

to you all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from you no secrets are hidden.

Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the

inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please rise as you are able to sing Hymn No 366 in Common Praise

1 Glory, in the highest glory,

peace to all in all their days.

Worship, thanks and praise

unceasing to the Source of all we raise:

reigning in the sapphire height,

hidden from our mortal sight,

now receive our adoration,

as we make our supplication.

2 Jesus Christ, the world’s Redeemer,

Lamb of God, for sinners given,

Word eternal, born of Mary,

Word made flesh, the face of heaven:

holy one, to you we pray,

hear us in the realms of day,

with the Spirit there united,

and the God-head high exalted.

Priest Let us pray.

All O God, you gather a people you call your own.

Confirm us in the strength of your abiding word

and stay our hearts in the time of trial,

so that on the day of the Son of Man

we may without fear rejoice to behold his appearing.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Children’s focus

Please remain seated for a reading from the first Book of Samuel (Ch 1.4-20)

On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions

to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but

to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her,

though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to

provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had

closed her womb. So it went on year after year; as often as

she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke

her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her

husband Elkanah said to her, ‘Hannah, why do you weep?

Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not

more to you than ten sons?’

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and

presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was

sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the

Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord,

and wept bitterly. She made this vow: ‘O Lord of hosts, if

only you will look on the misery of your servant, and

remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to

your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as

a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither

wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.’

As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her

mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved,

but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was

drunk. So Eli said to her, ‘How long will you make a

drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.’ But

Hannah answered, ‘No, my lord, I am a woman deeply

troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I

have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not

regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been

speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.’

Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace; the God of Israel grant

the petition you have made to him.’ And she said, ‘Let your

Page 5: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

5

servant find favour in your sight.’ Then the woman went to

her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her

countenance was sad no longer.

They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the

Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah.

Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered

her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She

named him Samuel, for she said, ‘I have asked him of the

Lord.’

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

All Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able to sing the canticle (No 318 in Common Praise)

1 Rejoice today with one accord,

sing out with exultation;

rejoice and praise our mighty Lord,

whose arm hath brought salvation.

His works of love proclaim

the greatness of his name;

for he is God alone,

who hath his mercy shown:

let all his saints adore him!

2 When in distress to him we cried

he heard our sad complaining;

O trust in him. what'er betide,

his love is all-sustaining.

Triumphant songs of praise

to him our hearts shall raise:

now every voice shall say,

"O praise our God alway";

let all his saints adore him!

Please remain seated for a reading from the Letter to the Hebrews

(Chapter 10.11-14,19-25)

And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering

again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away

sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single

sacrifice for sins, ‘he sat down at the right hand of God’,

and since then has been waiting ‘until his enemies would be

made a footstool for his feet.’ For by a single offering he

has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter

the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living

way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is,

through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the

house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full

assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an

evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without

wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us

consider how to provoke one another to love and good

deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of

some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as

you see the Day approaching.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

All Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able to sing our Gradual Hymn No 529 in Common Praise

1 God my hope on you is founded;

you my faith and trust renew:

through all change and chance you guide me,

only good and only true.

God unknown,

you alone

call my heart to be your own.

2 Human pride and earthly glory,

sword and crown betray our trust;

though with care and toil we build them,

tower and temple fall to dust.

But your power,

hour by hour,

is my temple and my tower.

3 Daily does the almighty Giver

bounteous gifts on us below;

God’s desire for us delights us,

pleasure leads us where we go.

Here at hand

love takes stand,

joy awaits God’s sure command

4 God's great goodness lasts for ever,

deepest wisdom, passing thought:

splendour, light and life attending,

beauty springing out of naught.

Evermore

from God’s store

new-born worlds rise and adore.

We remain standing and turn to face the Deacon

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to

St Mark. (Chapter 13.1-8)

All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to

him, ‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large

buildings!’ Then Jesus asked him, ‘Do you see these great

buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all

will be thrown down.’

When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the

temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him

privately, ‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the

sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?’

Then Jesus began to say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads

you astray. Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!”

and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and

rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place,

but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against

nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be

earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is

but the beginning of the birth pangs.

Deacon The Gospel of Christ.

All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

5 Still from earth to God eternal

sacrifice of praise be done,

high above all praises praising

for the gift of Christ the Son.

Christ you call

one and all;

those who follow shall not fall.

Please rise as you are able

Priest Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say,

All I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again

to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Please remain standing or kneel for our prayers

At the conclusion of the Prayers of the People

Intercessor Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, and

St John the Beloved, our patron and all the saints we

commend ourselves and all people to your unfailing love.

Merciful God:

Confession and Absolution

Priest Dear friends in Christ,

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy;

God welcomes sinners

and invites us to this table.

Let us confess our sins,

confident in God’s forgiveness.

Silence is kept

Priest Most merciful God,

All we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us,

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your name. Amen.

Priest Almighty God have mercy upon you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and keep you in eternal life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Please rise as you are able for the Peace

Priest The peace of the Lord be always with you.

All And also with you.

Please exchange a sign of peace

Page 11: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

11

During the singing of Hymn No 350 in Common Praise, a collection will be taken.

1 Stand up and bless the Lord,

you people of God’s choice;

stand up and bless the Lord of hosts

with heart and soul and voice.

2 Though high above all praise,

above all blessing high,

who would not fear God’s holy name,

and laud and magnify?

3 O for the living flame

from God’s own altar brought,

to touch our lips, our minds inspire,

and wing to heaven our thought!

4 God is our strength and song,

who makes salvation ours;

then be God’s love in Christ proclaimed

with all our ransomed powers.

5 Stand up and bless the Lord;

the Lord your God adore;

stand up and bless the glorious name

henceforth for evermore.

Prayer over the gifts

Priest Holy God,

in this eucharist we renew our baptismal covenant.

Help us, through our offering this day,

to renounce all things that draw us from your love.

This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Priest The Lord be with you.

All And also with you.

Priest Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.

Page 12: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

12

Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Priest It is indeed right that we should praise you,

gracious God,

for you created all things.

You formed us in your own image:

male and female you created us.

When we turned away from you in sin,

you did not cease to care for us,

but opened a path of salvation for all people.

You made a covenant with Israel,

and through your servants Abraham and Sarah

gave the promise of a blessing to all nations.

Through Moses you led your people

from bondage into freedom;

through the prophets

you renewed your promise of salvation.

Therefore, with them, and with all your saints

who have served you in every age,

we give thanks and raise our voices

to proclaim the glory of your name.

Page 13: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

13

Priest Holy God, source of life and goodness,

all creation rightly gives you praise.

In the fullness of time,

you sent your Son Jesus Christ,

to share our human nature,

to live and die as one of us,

to reconcile us to you,

the God and Father of all.

He healed the sick

and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners;

he opened the eyes of the blind

and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom

to the poor and to those in need.

In all things he fulfilled your gracious will.

On the night he freely gave himself to death,

our Lord Jesus Christ took bread,

and when he had given thanks to you,

he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,

and said, “ Take, eat:

this is my body which is given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine;

and when he had given thanks,

he gave it to them,

and said, “ Drink this, all of you:

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many

for the forgiveness of sins.

Whenever you drink it,

do this for the remembrance of me.”

Gracious God,

his perfect sacrifice

destroys the power of sin and death;

by raising him to life

you give us life for evermore.

Page 14: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

14

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith.

All Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

Priest Recalling his death,

proclaiming his resurrection,

and looking for his coming again in glory,

we offer you, Father, this bread and this cup.

Send your Holy Spirit upon us

and upon these gifts,

that all who eat and drink at this table

may be one body and one holy people,

a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory is yours, almighty Father,

now and for ever. Amen.

Priest As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,

All Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those

who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial,

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

Page 15: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

15

Priest We break this bread

to share in the body of Christ.

All We, being many, are one body,

for we all share in the one bread.

Priest The gifts of God for the people of God.

All Thanks be to God.

We invite all baptized Christians to receive Communion at our altar. If you wish to

receive a blessing please come at the same time. Intinction is not permitted as it

contaminates the wine. It is acceptable to receive either bread or wine only.

If you are unable to make your way to the altar please ask a sidesperson to have

Communion brought to you. Gluten free wafers are available.

Anthem Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Holst

Please rise as you are able

Priest Gracious God,

in this sacrament

we have shared the body and blood of Christ.

May we who have been nourished by holy things

bear witness to his light,

and share in his eternal priesthood;

for he is Lord for ever and ever. Amen.

Page 16: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

16

Priest Glory to God,

All whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more

than we ask or imagine. Glory to God from

generation to generation, in the Church and in

Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

We sit for the notices

Please rise as you are able for the Blessing

Priest The peace of God which passes all understanding, keep

your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of

God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be

among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

We sing our final Hymn No 527, tune 393 in Common Praise

1 How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,

is laid for your faith in his excellent word!

What more can he say than to you he has said,

to you who to Jesus for refuge have fled?

2 "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed!

for I am thy God and will still give thee aid;

I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee

to stand,

upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

3 When through the deep waters I call thee to go,

the rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;

for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,

and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

4 When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,

my grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply:

the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design

thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

Page 17: Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

17

5 The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose

I will not - I will not desert to its foes;

that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,

I'll never - no, never - no, never forsake!"

Dismissal

Deacon Let us go forth in the name of Christ.

All Thanks be to God.
