People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

COLLECT FOR PURITY 355 Celebrant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are

hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love

you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS S280 Robert Powell

1. Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth.

2. Lord God, heavenly King,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

3. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

4. you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant: Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to

hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed

hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 1:4-20 Reader: On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to

all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though

the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had

closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to

provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why

do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the

priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and

prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: “O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the

misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male

5. you are seated at the right hand

of the Father: receive our prayer.

6. For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

7. you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father, Amen

child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor

intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.”

As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her

lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, “How long

will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord,

I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my

soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my

great anxiety and vexation all this time.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the

petition you have made to him.” And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman

went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer.

They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at

Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and

bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the Lord.”

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM The Song of Hannah spoken @ 8:30am My heart exults in you, O God;*

my triumph song is lifted in you.

My mouth derides my enemies,*

For I rejoice in your salvation.

There is none holy like you,*

Nor any rock to be compared to you, our God.

Do not heap up prideful words or speak in arrogance;*

Only God is knowing and weighs all actions.

The weapons of the mighty are broken,*

But the weak are clothed in strength.

Those once full now labor for bread,*

Those who hungered now are well fed.

The childless woman finds her life fruitful,*

And the mother of many sites forlorn.

God will guide the path of the faithful,*

But the wicked will languish in darkness.

For it is not by human might*

That any moral will prevail.

The foes of our God will be shattered;*

The Most High will thunder through the heavens.

The Almighty will judge the earth to its ends*

And will give strength to the ruler of God’s own choosing.

THE SECOND READING: Hebrews 10:11-14, 19-25 Reader: Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that

can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at

the right hand of God,” and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for

his feet.” For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and

living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great

priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts

sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the

confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to

provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but

encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People: Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE O God of Every Nation Hymnal 607 (v. 1, 4) Please stand.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 13:1-8 Gospeller: As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what

large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one

stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.”

When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him

privately, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be

accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in

my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do

not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and

kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the

beginning of the birthpangs.”

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON Reverend Beth Lilly

~ (Silence follows the Sermon) ~

THE NICENE CREED 358 We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

Page 6: Twenty Sixth Sunday after Pentecost November 18, 2018 …images.acswebnetworks.com/1/2863/095322_111818_BLTN_830_1030.pdf2 The Word of the Lord PRELUDE May God bless you during this

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE OFFERTORY

HYMN Doxology Old 100th

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise Him all creatures here below,

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer C) 369 Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

Celebrant: God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.

People: Glory to you for ever and ever.

Celebrant: At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space,

galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

People: By your will they were created and have their being.

Celebrant: From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us

with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we

turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Celebrant: Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you

revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son,

born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

People: By his blood, he reconciled us.

By his wounds, we are healed.

Celebrant: And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets,

apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to

you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

SANCTUS S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Page 9: Twenty Sixth Sunday after Pentecost November 18, 2018 …images.acswebnetworks.com/1/2863/095322_111818_BLTN_830_1030.pdf2 The Word of the Lord PRELUDE May God bless you during this

The people stand or kneel.

Celebrant: And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water

and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood

of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends,

and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the

new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do

this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,

Celebrant and People: We celebrate his death and resurrection,

as we await the day of his coming.

Celebrant: Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Sarah,

Rachel, and Rebekah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at

work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace

only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy

Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his

name.

People: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Celebrant: Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High

Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship,

from generation to generation.

People: AMEN. Danish 3-fold

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior As our Savior Christ

Christ has taught us, has taught us,

we are bold to say, we now pray,

THE LORD’S PRAYER spoken 8:30am 364

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

A Word From The Rev. Beth Lilly

Hannah and Peninnah (from 1 Samuel 1:4-20)

Have you ever felt like Hannah? Can you identify times in your life when there may have been “a Peninnah” in

your life who seemed to have everything you wanted, and worse, seemed to loom it over you and put you down?

This story carries similar themes found in a movie like “Mean Girls”. How unfortunate that such dynamics are far

too common.

The story of Hannah and her struggles about being barren, and being bullied by Peninnah, is gripping. Worse yet,

Hannah’s husband (also Peninnah’s husband) did not understand why she could not be satisfied with her life as it

was. He made matters worse by pointing out how wonderful it should be for her just to have him as a husband.

Hannah found herself alone in her yearnings, and for her it was not a happy situation. She yearned to have a male

child.

Hannah takes her broken heart to God in prayer at the temple. Even there, at first, she is misunderstood by the

priest. Others could have taken offense at that misunderstanding and left, blaming God and becoming bitter. But

Hannah persisted. She stayed clear in making her needs known. Hannah’s faith was strong. She believed God

would hear her prayers. Indeed, in her persistence and faith, she was blessed. After Hannah is blessed with

Samuel, her nemesis Peninnah is never mentioned again in the story.

Our own faith meets many challenges in our lives. Sometimes what the world tells us about ourselves does not ring

true in our hearts as to what we know we are called to give the world for God. Our lives belong to God, and our

desire to be blessed by God can often be fulfilled in miraculous ways, especially when we remember to dedicate our

blessings to the One who gives them to us. When we focus on God and the blessings we are given, we can move

forward from those people or incidences that have blocked us or harmed us.

Hannah dedicated her answer to prayer, her son Samuel, to God who blessed her. She reared him to serve God.

Hannah’s efforts were fruitful because Samuel indeed became one of the great priests and prophets of Israel.

May your prayers to receive your blessings from God, so that you can in turn meaningfully serve God,

be fulfilled. Mother Beth+

VESTRY OPENINGS Interested in learning more about the business and operational aspects that are necessary to support our church? There’s an opportunity just waiting for you to become a part of it! There are several openings for the upcoming year to serve on the Vestry. Candidates must be a confirmed communicant, and at least 16 years of age. If you are interested, please reach out to one of our clergy or a current member of the Vestry.

REQUESTS REQUESTS FOR PRAYER -- To make a prayer request for a loved one or a community or a national concern to be offered up on Sunday mornings, record the name on the prayer list beside the Guest Register in the Narthex. If the concern is ongoing and you would like the name also listed in the NET and prayed for on Sunday mornings on a rotating basis over a long period, circle the name on the list. Confidential prayer can be requested using the blue DOK prayer cards in the pews. Prayer requests received on the DOK cards are kept confidential and are not spoken on Sunday mornings, but are prayed for by all DOK members daily for one month or longer, if requested on the card.

CHURCH NEWS & EVENTS SATURDAY BREAKFAST AT STACYS If you would like to receive emails regarding activities of the men in the Church, send your email address to [email protected] (and we will add you to this year's list.) ADVENT DEVOTIONAL 2018 We are starting preparations to publish the 18th annual St. Peter Advent Devotional and we would really like to have a devotion written by you and/or your children to include in devotional. What makes this devotional so special is the fact fellow members write personal devotionals about:

Special “God Moments”

Favorite scriptures

What Advent/Christmas means to them

Favorite stories/poems written by their family (ex: their Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers etc).

It is very special to participate in daily devotions during Advent and have the inspirational experience to enjoy a few words from fellow St Peter’s members. So please take a few moments and write a devotional…… it does not have to be long or a “Biblical Epistle”……just from you! Also, help your children compose one too! Advent is only a few weeks from now….. Please complete and submit before November 16th. If you have any questions, please call Bud & Jeanne Hawkins at (704) 663-9004 (cell). NOTE: Devotions can be placed in our Church mailbox, or transmit via E-mail, “word” format ([email protected]) Thanks, in advance, for your support!!

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT It's that time of year where we start pulling out all of our props for our annual Christmas Eve Pageant. This year we will be doing "Twas the Night Before Christmas". There are many speaking and nonspeaking parts, so everyone can take part. I know that everyone is very busy, so I have tried to limit us to only two practices - (December 11th and December 18th, 5:30-6:15). Please use the sign up sheet in Fotinos Hall to pick out who you would like to be this year.

CANTEMUS CHOIR For the past several years we have traditionally had the wonderful voices of our Cantemus Choir sing with the Adult Choir during the service of Lessons & Carols. If your child would like to sing with the Cantemus Choir, please see the sign up sheet in Fotinos Hall. Practice starts November 28th! Join us at 5:30pm. We will practice Nov 28th, Dec 5th, and 12th. There is still room to join us!

THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY – THE WOMEN OF CHRISTMAS Thursdays, November 29-Thursday, December 20th 11:00am.-Noon. A bible study for both men and women! A sacred season is about to unfold for three women whose hearts belong to God. Elizabeth is barren, yet her trust in God remains fertile. Mary is betrothed in marriage, yet she is willing to bear God’s Son. Anna is a widow full of years, yet she waits patiently, prayerfully for the Messiah to appear in the temple courts. COME JOIN US! If you would like to be a part of this bible study, please let Kina know by November 18th, so that a copy of the book can be ordered for you.

COMMUNITY NEWS

THE GREEN ROOM IN NEWTON…… is playing Murder on the Nile and if you would like to join others from St. Peter’s , you can order tickets for Jan 18 at 7:30. Call or see Vickie Jordan or Jeanne Hawkins to make arrangements.

HESED House of Hope Ministry

ONE YEAR OF HOPE In a step of faith, Hesed House of Hope, once just a winter ministry, committed to stay open year round to serve the homeless community in Lincoln County. October 1st marked our first anniversary. Dozens of people have stepped up to be sure our doors remain open 365 days a year. Established in 2008, HESED HOUSE is the only homeless shelter that provides a safe drug free place with a bed to sleep, dinner and breakfast daily, shower and laundry facilities for men, women and children.

This is what the last year looks like... - 172 individuals served from the age of 79 to 8 months - Most of our guests are employed - 49 of our guests have obtained permanent housing - 3 residents were reunited with their families - Bibles, crosses and prayer squares were made for each bed. - Over 1000 plates of food were served

Interested in helping? LOOK AT OUR WEBSITE. www.hesed-Lincoln.org See the pictures of the Lincolnton facility - Bed sponsorships are available $30 month - Current monthly kitchen, bath and personal needs are listed - Volunteer activities including making meals or providing nightly activities - We are currently at full capacity, 24 beds and 6 cots, and have a waiting list. - Hesed means "kindness" and the hearts of many and God has made this courageous move a reality!
