Get Ready for the Lenten Challenge!

At the back of the church on Ash Wednesday pick up your Lenten booklet and Fr. Robert Barron's Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues CD. $2 donation requested.

This week we start the season of Lent, 40 days of preparation for the main time of the year, Holy Week. It’s a time of grace and spiritual renewal. Here’s the menu for St Mary’s parish so you can choose what to do during this Lent:

Go to Mass on Ash Wednesday. We will have confessions at Church from 4:30 pm till 6:45 pm.

Join the Lenten Challenge – Pray with the Bible every day and listen to the CD of Fr Barron 7 deadly sins and 7 lively virtues. Check the web for more details.

Talk Lent & Lectio – We will have two presentations about how to pray with the Bible and the meaning of Lent. The content of the presentations is the same, we give you two different dates in case one conflicts with your schedule. Thursday, February 19 or Wednesday, February 25; both sessions at 7 p.m. in Upper Social Hall.

Stations & Simple Supper – Every Friday of Lent, we have supper at the gym at 6 p.m., followed by the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) at 7 p.m.

Do a spiritual plan for Lent – What are you going to give up (fast)? What are you going to give (love and prayer). We have enclosed a spiritual plan template (see above) for your convenience.

Attend the Hildegard Retreat - A Women’s Mini-Retreat. Saturday, February 28 at St. Mary’s Upper Social Hall.

Consider coming to daily Mass during Lent. I hope this season is a time of renewal for our whole community. Advent was powerful, let’s expect more from Lent! With the staff of St Mary’s, we propose to meditate during this season in the words: “Be still and know that I am God.”

Faith Formation

Souper Bowl was a Barn Burner!!!

Whether your team won the Super Bowl or whether you were rooting for the team whereby, the coach made a questionable play call, we at St. Mary's were all true winners in this year’s Souper Bowl!

Our players scored $5,105.94 and recovered 1,602 canned goods. The eventual winners are our St. Vincent's Parish pantry. There is nothing more exciting than being able to pay it forward.

It is with a most humble heart that I thank the youth, merchants, parents, teachers, and especially our St. Mary's family who participated in this year’s Bowl. Every year, we exceed the previous year, and we look forward to breaking more records next year. Without your continued generosity none of these records could be set!

First Holy Communion/First Reconciliation

WOW!!! A huge thank you to the First Holy Communion children and their families. You are all so amazing! Fr. Fred Anthony from Sweet Home, our visiting priest, stated that this was the best prepared group of students he has ever had for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Thank you, Fr. Anthony and Fr. Ignacio, for helping our children receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Without our amazing teachers, none of this could have been accomplished!

SPONSOR A COLLEGE STUDENT FOR A RETREAT

WE ARE ORGANIZING A 10-WEEK COURSE CALLED FRAGUA. PART OF THE COURSE IS DOING A RETREAT. WE HAVE 100 PEOPLE ATTENDING THE COURSE.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR PARISHIONERS WHO WANT TO SPONSOR THE COLLEGE STUDENTS SO THEY DON’T HAVE TO PAY THE TOTAL COST. SPONSORING one student on the weekend retreat costs $65, but any amount is helpful. Without your help, many students would not be able to go. This is a critical time for these young adult students’ formation in faith.

The Neocatechumenal Way in our parish will be making door-to-door visitations throughout Corvallis. They will share the Good News and invite those they meet to our parish.

In this they are fulfilling the exhortation of St. John Paul II who said, “Above all the Gospel must be proclaimed by witness. Take a Christian or a handful of Christians who, in the midst of their own community, show their capacity for understanding and acceptance, their sharing of life and destiny with other people, their solidarity with the efforts of all for whatever is noble and good. …All Christians are called to this witness, and in this way they can be real evangelizers.”

May our prayers support them in their work.

Born Again? Faith Alone?

In one of his most focused talks to date, Stephen Ray discusses salvation, the authentic biblical understanding of being "born again", and how we are saved by faith, but not "faith alone". With great humor and doctrinal depth, he goes all the way back to Abraham to show that we are saved by faith and obedience to all that Christ demands of us.

Parishioner Comments "The best talk I've ever heard on being 'born again' and on salvation!" Gary Michuta

So full of insight! Stephen gives a fantastic explanation of how disobedience is the opposite of belief, and all according to scripture!

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
