Dear Parishioners, Thank you for the love and support you showed to Father Augustine this past week as he celebrated 40 years of Priesthood. The receptions last weekend and the Mass on Thursday were expressions of friendship and gratitude for Father’s ministry. We ask God’s abundant blessings upon him as he continues to live out the gift of Priesthood in our midst.

The great season of Lent begins this Wednesday, March 18. Ash Wednesday Masses will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. Distribution of ashes will take place during the Mass. Confessions will be heard a half hour prior to each Mass (7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. On the Fridays of Lent, Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. Additional confessions will be heard on the Wednesdays and Fridays of Lent at 2:30 p.m. (prior to Benediction and Stations of the Cross).

In the Diocese of St. Petersburg, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence. More information on these guidelines is available on our parish website: www.popcc.org/lent

Next weekend, Mr. Ken Yasinski, an internationally known Catholic Evangelist will speak at all church Masses to introduce our Lenten mission. The mission will take place Monday – Wednesday, February 23 – 25 at 9:00 a.m. repeated in the evening at 7:00 p.m. You can view some of Ken’s videos via our parish website. I encourage you to attend the mission and bring friends and family. It will be a wonderful way to begin the Lenten season and I’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Once again, we will offer Mass at our assisted living and nursing facilities this Lent. Contact Pam Hadden at the parish office to learn about the schedule of Masses so you can join your loved one there. Also, there is always a need for additional outreach extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to bring the Eucharist to the homebound, those in the hospital, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Screening and training will be provided. Thank you to all of our present extraordinary ministers for their sacrifice of time and talent.

May God give you and your loved ones every grace in the upcoming Lenten season to “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” — Father Kovanis

Sixth Sunday in

Ordinary Time #2616:

Prayer to Jesus is

answered by him already

during his ministry,

through signs that

anticipate the power of

his death and

Resurrection: Jesus hears the prayer of faith,

expressed in words (the leper, Jairus, the

Canaanite woman, the good thief)84 or in silence

(the bearers of the paralytic, the woman with a

hemorrhage who touches his clothes, the tears

and ointment of the sinful woman).85 The urgent

request of the blind men, "Have mercy on us,

Son of David" or "Jesus, Son of David, have

mercy on me!" has-been renewed in the

traditional prayer to Jesus known as the Jesus

Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have

mercy on me, a sinner!"86 Healing infirmities or

forgiving sins, Jesus always responds to a prayer

offered in faith: "Your faith has made you well;

go in peace." St. Augustine wonderfully

summarizes the three dimensions of Jesus'

prayer: "He prays for us as our priest, prays in us

as our Head, and is prayed to by us as our God.

Therefore let us acknowledge our voice in him

and his in us."87

84 Cf. Mk 1:40-41; 5:36; 7:29; Cf. Lk 23:39-43.

Around the Parish Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence

THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Thursday, March 12

5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the church

PARISH GUIDELINES FOR LENT AND EASTER 2015

Diocese of St. Petersburg

available at www.popcc.org/lent

The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early

Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a

certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God’s continued call to

conversion and holiness.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to

59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain

strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.

Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash

Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence.

Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to

practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition.

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should

undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at

Easter.
