“Blessed are those who trust in the Lord; the Lord will be their trust.” Jer 17:7 We know that we are called to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. If we trust in the Lord, how can we not be good stewards of all that has been entrusted to us in this life? St. Francis of Assisi instructed that, “For it is in giving, that we receive” which includes receiving abundant blessings from our Heavenly Father.

Do You Want to Know the

Feeling of Real

Satisfaction?

Communion Ministers are needed to take Communion to Audubon Hospital. Taking Communion to those who cannot take part in the Eucharistic Assem-bly brings unity between the parish com-munity and its sick members. To the patients, it means everything, and to those who take Communion to them, what a feeling to know, no matter what happens to them, through your ministry you are able to offer the sick the opportunity to receive and be prepared for our Lord. Need train-ing to get your Communion Minister Certifi-cation? Training Sessions are coming up at St. Albert the Great, 1395 Girard Dr., from 7:00 pm-9:00 pm on Monday, March 18th and Monday, March 25th. Both ses-sions must be completed for certification. You must register online at ww.archlou.org under the Office of Worship/Communion Minister Formation Program or call them at 636-0296, ext. #1260. If you already have your certification or complete the training, just call the parish office and we’ll get the information to the coordinator.

From the Desk of: Stuart Wicke, Director of Music

Why do hymn-writers so often look backward when

setting their texts to music?

In 1982, Michael Perry wrote the hymn “O God

Beyond All Praising”, using the music from Gustav

Holst’s The Planets, which had been composed about

seventy years earlier. In 1907, Henry Van Dyke

penned the words to “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”,

borrowing the music from Beethoven’s Symphony No.

9, which had premiered eighty-three years earlier. In 1520, French

composer Josquin des Prez wrote the Missa (Mass of) Pange Lingua, using

music from the (at the time) well-known hymn “Pange lingua gloriósi

córporis mystérium”, which had been written by Saint Thomas Aquinas

nearly three centuries earlier. Music has a way of sticking with us that plain spoken word simply doesn’t.

This is why, when learning the alphabet, most of us didn’t grow up speaking

the letters to memorize them. We put it to music – specifically to “Twinkle

Twinkle Little Star”, a tune which most of us had already heard before. By

setting new information to a familiar tune, we don’t have to work as hard to

recall that information, we just have to remember the tune (although most

of us probably know our ABCs well enough now, maybe a better example

would be found in Tom Lehrer’s “The Elements”?).

Hymn-writers understand and take advantage of this fact of music. By using

a recognizable tune, they can leave you with a more lasting impression of

the text, which can help you recall and learn the scripture that inspired it –

consider how a song like “What Child Is This” (originally an English folk song

from the 16th century) helps us remember and understand the story of

Christmas.

There is also a deliberate choice made in the music as well – in some cases

our musical memory can serve as a shorthand for the message of the text.

For “O God Beyond All Praising”, Michael Perry chooses the music from

Jupiter, the most majestic of The Planets, and the center of Holst’s portrayal

of the solar system, around which the other planets were focused. For

“Joyful, Joyful”, Henry Van Dyke chose Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, a tune which

was explicitly written to evoke joy and praise. And for Josquin des Prez’s

mass, what better than to reference St. Thomas Aquinas’s hymn, which

translates literally as: “Sing, my tongue, the Savior’s glory, of His Flesh, the

Mystery sing”.

TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR

2019/2020 SCHOOL YEAR

The Catholic Education Foun-dation (CEF) and the Archdio-cese of Louisville are helping

more families than ever who cannot af-ford the full cost of educating their chil-dren in a Catholic elementary school. Tui-tion assistance applications should be submitted between December 15, 2018 and February 28, 2019. You must apply for tuition assistance every year and fami-lies must use the online application avail-able on the CEF website www.ceflou.org. Complete only one FACTS application for all students in the family (elementary and high school) on the same form. You must submit your 2017 federal income tax return and 2017 W-2 information. Com-pleted applications received by February 28, 2019 will participate in the initial grant awards. A much smaller amount of tuition assistance may be available for forms submitted after that date. Tuition assistance award letters will be mailed to families no later than June 15, 2019. For questions, please call the Catholic Educa-tion Foundation at (502) 585-2747 or visit them online at: (www.ceflou.org).

DO WE HAVE YOUR 2019 STEWARDSHIP FORM?

Your 2019 Stewardship From is due back to the church office by March 1, 2019. It is important that we receive yours so we can

verify the information you provide with our database. Perhaps you have moved, or a child has now left home or turned 18 so they should be listed separate from your household, Have you changed phone numbers? Have a new e-mail address? The stewardship drive also gives you the opportunity to consider how you can give back to your parish. Perhaps you are only able to pray daily for our parish, that is just as important to us as you physically doing a ministry. Fill your form out and drop it in the collection basket, put it in the drop slot next to the parish office door, or mail, e-mail to [email protected] or fax it to us at 635-5888.
