Editorial

Hello Kulin!

I have now started my first week at the brand new and very lovely Kulin Shire office as the new CRC manager, people have been very welcoming so thank you so much! I am starting to get the gist of how you do things in Kulin!

I am looking forward to meeting all of you and getting to know what makes Kulin tick!

Usually at this point I would give a quick synopsis of what’s been happening in the CRC and what’s coming up but as this is my second day I am still learning too!

Two things just quickly though;

If there is anyone in the community who is a spelling and grammar pro I would love for you to be involved in the fortnightly Kulin Update! Please let us know if you are interested and would like to be involved by calling or emailing the Shire. If you are unsure on how to write your news article I am happy for people to send photos, rough info and a contact and I will put stories together.

This fortnight we did this differently on how the Update is emailed out – instead of emailing the Update in a PDF format (which takes ages to send and download) we are now going to email you the link to the latest Kulin Update which will ‘live’ on our Shire website – so you can choose to download the Kulin Update when it’s convenient to you.

Until next time!

Kate Bishop

About Kate

I am born and bred from just down the road in Lake Grace, grew up on the family farm Brockham Stud, yes my Dad is Bruce Bishop, yes we still breed Kelpie sheep dogs, yes we still breed Merino Rams and yes we breed Australian Quarter Horses. This pretty much sums up my childhood of being raised alongside numerous litters of pups, substituting as the sheepdog and endless days horse riding!

I went to a number of different schools growing up but I attended Narrogin Ag for year 11 and 12 in 2001 and 2002 and completed my work placements by working in horse racing stables strapping and riding. Then I attended Muresk (Curtin University) where I completed a Bachelor of Agribusiness Majoring in Marketing. During my time at Muresk I worked part-time for the WA Turf Club over the next five years in a number of different roles from Track Marshall at 4am in the morning, First Aid Officer at race meetings and even as a Clerk of the Course a few times!

After Muresk I worked for Meat and Livestock Australia as a Livestock Market Officer in Mt Barker, Katanning and Midland which eventually became Muchea and presented the weekly saleyard reports on the ABC Radio program The Country Hour. After three years of hanging around in sheep and cattle saleyards I decided it was time for a change and a job came up with the Kondinin Group in Perth. I started off as an Executive Officer and then a position came up as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator.

While I was with the Kondinin Group I coordinated the 2012 Australian Farmer of the Year Awards, a yearly nationwide competition aimed at highlighting the Agricultural Industries best farmers. It was an amazing experience culminating with a large awards ceremony in Melbourne and broadcast on Landline.

In January 2013 my grandmother passed away and Dad had been diagnosed with skin cancer and undergone two massive surgeries so I decided to move back to the farm in Lake Grace and this is when I met Luke Tyson, who was driving for McCubbings Transport at the time and he picked up a few loads of sheep from the farm and apparently a farmer’s daughter as well!

So I started working at the Lake Grace Visitors Centre and became hugely passionate about promoting Tourism in the Wheatbelt! This is when I first worked with Gen Whisson on the Pathways to Wave Rock promotional clip and I was lucky enough to be involved with the promotional launch of this great initiative a few years ago.

A job opportunity came up down in Pingrup as the CRC Manager 18 months later and as community development was something I had always been interested in I started commuting 50km to and from work every day from the farm in Lake Grace. Pingrup is a tiny wheat growing town in the Great Southern of only 70 people, the community like many others had been slowly dwindling. The school only has 14 children in it from Kindy to Yr 6.

The change in funding structure for CRCs from the Department of Regional Development in 2014 gave the Pingrup CRC the incentive it needed to start running more interactive social and economic events. A few months ago a new business started up in town for the first time in five years, the Bird in the Bush Café is a cool retro café, gift shop and office space.

The town is excited about the future now and I’m sure some of this can be attributed to the hard work everyone who is involved with the CRC has put in. If you are heading down to Albany make sure you call in to the Bird in the Bush café to check it out!

February 18, 2016

The highlight for me was designing an Early Childhood Development Program and successfully acquiring funding from Amity Health to implement the program in the Shire of Kent.

However the 100km round trip every day for work was beginning to get taxing which brings me to now! Luke and I had both decided to move up here for work in the New Year and the position came up at the Kulin CRC just at the right time!

In my spare time I am usually doing something with either horses or dogs! Between us we have two Jack Russell's Bosi and Ruski, two red and tan kelpies Tiffany and Sandy and eight horses! They are all mostly Australian Quarter Horses; Brodie, Dauphine, Liberty, Princess, Annie, Blue, Baby Doll and Honey!

Luke and I compete on most of them in the horse sport Campdrafting so be prepared to learn LOTS more about

Campdrafting through the Kulin Update!! This weekend we have the Mt Barker Campdraft and there are several others coming up over the next two months. We travel all over the state for campdrafting as far up as the Pilbara and it’s basically just like caravanning with horses!

I am looking forward to living and working up here and getting to know everyone. I am hoping to play Netball this season after campdrafting has finished so I hope to meet all of you at some point.

Camp Kulin Counsellor Feedback

Contributed by Michelle O’Brien

I decided to come on camp after I had done a few hours helping on a camp before. I have always wanted to help out those less fortunate than myself and I thought that Camp Kulin would be the perfect way to do it!

I had heard from so many people in town how good it was and how much of a difference they were making so I decided I wanted to be involved! My experience as a camp counsellor was amazing and I'm so glad I did it! In the beginning I was a bit overwhelmed and didn't believe I was making a difference, so didn't want to be there, but after a few days, I could see the kids grow and change in the space of a few days, and the impact the camp had started to be obvious.

Seeing the kids enjoy every activity and experience a real Christmas was so good and made me realise that we were making a difference! It was so rewarding and opening! The kids become better behaved, more confident and grateful for everything camp gave them, which was so good to see!

I would definitely recommend it for someone else as I loved it and learnt so much! I became more confident in myself, and started to realise that I was so lucky for what I had compared to other people! The camp was managed really well and everything was done to a great standard! The food was also really good considering we were on camp!

If anyone is considering sending their child to camp I would definitely recommend it as it is so beneficial to anyone! The experience is so rewarding and definitely worth going! I'm so grateful and glad to have taken part in something as good as Camp Kulin! Thank you for the opportunity!

Camp Kulin Counsellor Feedback

Contributed by Tom Bennier

I decided to do Camp Kulin to get a new experience and really see what Camp Kulin has been all about over the years it has been in Kulin. My family has helped out at Camp Kulin and it wasn’t until we cooked dinner for the campers that I wanted to get involved and be a camp counsellor.

I really enjoyed my time at camp and loved meeting all the great kids that came to the camp, it was a great experience for not only the campers but me as well. Over the course of the week the kids learnt a whole range of different things, from leadership skills, to teamwork skills and how to work in a team. Towards the end of the week I was able to see change in many of the campers, some who were shy at the beginning, starting to throw in some good ideas in group discussions or just started to interact a bit more with other campers. Other campers felt more confident in themselves and their own abillities.

I would highly recommend other people that are interested to give this experience a go, it is amazing. The camp was organised and ran by Tanya fantastically, all the campers and camp counsellors really enjoyed the camp, which she has put a mammoth amount of time

into.

If someone was considering sending their child to Camp Kulin or wanting to sponsor a child on camp, I would tell them not to hesitate and send them to camp, they will have an amazing time and really enjoy themselves and benefit from it.

Congratulations to Kulin student, Dylan Rader

Kulin resident, Dylan Rader, is a Year 12 prefect at the WA College of Agriculture – Narrogin in 2016.

Deputy Principal, Mark Pascoe, said, “Dylan is an enthusiastic participant of activities run at the Col-lege. His enthusiasm is infectious to other students.”

Dylan is looking forward to, “getting the ideas of fel-low students out to other people.” As a prefect, he hopes to make a difference to the social life of stu-dents by helping to organise the College Ball, Coun-try Week and socials.

Camp Kulin Summer 2016

Contributed by Tanya Dupagne

Our Summer 2016 camp season running over December and January was the biggest 2 months in the history of the Camp Kulin program. We ran six camps, comprising of a mix of general and scholarship camps for both Perth Metro and Regional campers. This included our very first Christmas camp for 31 children who have experienced some form of childhood trauma – for the majority of the kids attending this camp, it was the first time they’d ever had a Christmas dinner or taken part in Christmas carols.

49 camp counsellors volunteered 6132 hours of their time (equivalent to $153,300 of time) to run over 18,000 minutes of activities for our campers this summer. The youngest camp counsellor was 16 years old, and the oldest camp counsellor was 73 years old. Camp counsellors came from right across the state, with 32 Perth metro camp counsellors, 16 regional camp counsellors and 1 interstate camp counsellor who travelled from Melbourne. The Camp Kulin leadership team travelled over 5,000 kilometres over the 6 camps to pick up camp counsellors and campers from the Perth Metro area to bring them to camp.

179 campers travelled from over 70 suburbs to attend Camp Kulin. This included a number of towns in the Perth Metropolitan Area, as well as campers from Kulin and surrounding towns such as Kondinin, Narrogin, Corrigin, Jitarning and Pingelly and those from regional towns further afield such as Newman, Kalgoorlie, Merredin, Northam, Collie, Williams, Wyalkatchem, Norseman, Kukerin and Merriwa.

Food wise, we’ve made our way through over 19kg cereal; 100 litres milk; 3,300 pieces of bread; 1290 bread rolls; 14kg margarine; 38 large jars jam/vegemite; 26kg cold lunch meats; 80kg salad ingredients; 1,600 pieces of fruit; 134.2 kg lasagne; 110kg meat; 50kg cheese plus many other ingredients and food. Our cleaning team washed over 1000 pieces of linen and cleaned over 420 toilets and showers over the course of the summer.

Campers took part in numerous activities, including gaga dodgeball, skunk, giant human foosball, teambuilding and communication activities, human hungry hippos, excursions, theme days, My Kitchen Rules, Talent show and the biggest waterslide in regional Australia. All the activities were designed to teach leadership, respect, self confidence, self esteem, communication skills, perseverance, problem solving and goal setting.

The Camp Kulin team would like to say a big thank you to everyone who sponsored a scholarship child to attend our summer season. These children would not have been able to come otherwise, and they and their families were greatly appreciative of your

support. Special thanks to the WA CWA ladies who selected Camp Kulin as their beneficiary at their state conference and sponsored our entire session 6 camp for children who have been affected by trauma, as well as the CBH HMMS scheme who donated $10,000 to enable regional children to attend camp over the past 12 months. Had it not been for your support many children would have missed out on the opportunity to attend.
