The Shire of Kulin was recognised as one of the top

councils in the country for its Camp Kulin program this

week, becoming the only WA local government to take out

a category win at the 2015 National Awards for Local

Government.

Out of all the local governments in Australia, the Shire was

announced as the winner of the Multicultural Australia:

Strength in Diversity category of the awards, presented at

Parliament House in Canberra.

The awards celebrate local government projects that

demonstrate leading practice, deliver better outcomes for

communities, have the potential to be rolled out across

the country and make a meaningful difference.

Camp Kulin Manager Tanya Dupagne said the Shire was

honoured to be selected amongst this year’s winners.

“Camp Kulin was by far the smallest project of all the

winners, with some of the other entrants in our category

having 120 times the population that Kulin has. To be

awarded as the winner against such large scale projects is

a huge achievement for us, and something we never

thought would be possible 2 years ago when we started

the program,” she said.

The award caps off a big 12 months for Camp Kulin, who

have won many awards for the program including the

Premiers Award for Excellence in Public Sector

Management and the Constable Care Child Safety Awards.

Camp Kulin Manager Tanya Dupagne was named as one of

Australia’s 100 most influential women by the Australian

Financial Review and Westpac, and camp counsellor

Brittany Smeed received the Helen Handbury Leadership

Award selected from all year 12 students in Australia.

Camp Kulin is expecting further rapid growth over the next

year, following the announcement of funding from the

State Government’s Royalties for Regions fund to expand

the program.

Media release

Communities in the electorate of Central Wheatbelt have

been invited to have their say on country of origin food

labelling in an online survey that will help design the

Australian Government’s new labelling system.

The Government has been consulting with industry –

including growers, processors and retailers - to implement

a clearer, more direct system for food labelling that will

give consumers the information they want in a way that is

easy to read and understand.

State Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies MLA said

The Nationals WA were supportive of moves to better

clarify where food in the market place comes from in a

more practical manner.

“The new labelling policy and associated symbol to be

carried on consumer goods will identify where the product

was grown, made or manufactured and also what

percentage of ingredients in the product are Australian

grown,” she said.

“The community, growers and producers in the Central

Wheatbelt have been telling me that they want more

useful food labelling, and now they have the chance to

speak up about the options they prefer.”

The online survey can be accessed at

www.industry.gov.au/cool or hard copies can be

requested by calling 13 28 46. It takes about five minute to

complete.

Participants have the opportunity to answer a range of

multiple choice and shorthand questions, including

preferred food and beverage labelling options.

Ms Davies said the changes would involve cooperative

arrangements between the federal and state governments

to implement the new labelling system once finalised.

“These changes will not only be useful and informative to

consumers, but will also encourage people to buy local

and support local producers in their community,” she said.

“It’s important that people can make informed choices

about the food they buy at their local supermarket. I want

West Australians to have confidence in knowing where

their food is coming from.”

Contact Mia Davies electorate office on 08 90411 702

( Merredin) or 08 96222 871 (Northam) if you would like

to be provided a hard copy of the survey to complete.

Eligible Country Age Pension Fuel Card holders will enjoy an increase in card values to $565 per annum from July 1, helping keep them mobile in their communities. The spike is part of an annual indexation of card values, which are fully funded by the Royalties for Regions program. Member for Wagin Terry Waldron MLA said the Country Age Pension Fuel Card was a popular community support service that was now being utilised by more than 51,000 pensioners across regional WA. “This support service, introduced by The Nationals WA in 2009 as one of the landmark Royalties for Regions initiatives, is assisting pensioners stay mobile in and around their regional communities,” Mr Waldron said. “There are thousands of cardholders across the Wagin electorate who are making use of the scheme to purchase fuel and taxi services.”

Royalties for Regions funding for the scheme reaches record levels in 2015-16, with more than $130 million allocated towards fuel cards over the next four years. “New applications take about four weeks to process so I recommend eligible pensioners get their applications in now for the 2015-16 financial year,” he said. “Existing cardholders will automatically be issued a new card with an increased value as long as they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.” Applications can be made by presenting a current Pensioner Concession Card and lodging a form at a participating post office. To find the nearest participating post office call the Fuel Card Information Line on 1300 666 609. To be eligible for a Fuel Card, applicants must live in an eligible regional location in WA and receive a Centrelink Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Wife Pension or Widow B

Kulin residents are sure to be

fascinated as Western Australian

author Linda J Bettenay talks about

her latest book at the Kulin

Recreation Centre in August. After

her very successful visit in 2014,

Kulin was on Bettenay's 'Must

Revisit' list.

Following on from the amazing

success of her first book 'Secrets

Mothers Keep' Bettenay has recently

released 'Wishes For Starlight'.

The author is a descendent of hills

pioneers - the Bettenay family have

lived in the area since the 1890s.

Thus it is understandable her novels

tell stories of the early pioneering

days of Western Australia.

The central character in 'Wishes For

Starlight' is Starlight; a mixed blood,

deaf mute Aboriginal who lived over

the period 1889 - 1930s. The plight

of the Aboriginal is shown through the prism of the

discrimination and racism of the time; the imposition of

the 1905 Aborigines Act, the establishment of Aboriginal

reserves and the gradual removal of rights from Aboriginal

people.

Linda J Bettenay entwines Starlight's life with the three

white children who discover him; abandoned and living in

a chook pen fighting the dogs for food scraps. These

children give him friendship, love, trust and truth and

most of all protection from the barbs of the white man's

world.

Bettenay's latest book is firmly anchored in our area:

Gosnells, Canning Mills, Karragullen, Kalamunda, Araluen,

Roleystone, Kelmscott and Armadale all feature in this

astounding tale which comes from her father's and her

grandfather's memories.

Bettenay has tied in many of the major events of the time

locally, nationally and internationally. This is the period

when 'The War to End all Wars' accounted for the loss and

mutilation of many brave soldiers while also seriously

impacting those 'left at home' but it also allowed for the

blossoming of mateship which allowed many people to

face up to the challenges faced by post WW1 Australians.

'Wishes For Starlight' is steeped in our pioneering history:

when the orchards, the dams and the timber mills were

being established, when typhoid epidemics threatened

daily survival and fears of forest fires, destitution and

starvation were very real. A time when the Zig Zag railway

was built, the horse and cart reigned and barn dances

provided entertainment.

Every day life occurs on every page of this book and the

reader is transported to a simpler but also much crueller

and more confronting time.

Linda J Bettenay will present a talk about her book and she

will also explain how she uses historical fact to weave

historical fiction.

The talk will be at the Kulin Recreation Centre on

Thursday 13th August from 12noon - 1:30pm. Please book on 9880 1021 or [email protected] For further details on purchasing the book, go to www.lindasbooks.com.au or visit Linda's Facebook page www.facebook.com/lindasbookswa

Vipers vs Kukerin 14/06/15 C grade: KK Vipers won 5 nil B grade: KK Vipers won 2 nil A grade: Lake Grace/Kukerin won 2-1 Men: Kellerberrin won 2-1 On Saturday the 14th of June, the KK Vipers were up against Lake Grace/ Kukerin at a home game in Kulin, C grade got the day started with a 5nil win! Well done kids, fantastic effort!! It was then time for B grade, the girls put on an astounding performance, welcoming Yvonne Bowey back and it was like she had never left, Pheobe and Yvonne worked so well together in the forward line and Yvonne put away 2 sensational goals making them prevail in a 2 nil victory.

A grade were up against a respectable side, Taryn Eva played well and got rewarded with a superb goal, the girls had most of the play and a lot of scoring opportunities, but they were defeated 2-1. The men were next up, it was a fierce game between them and Kellerberrin, it was very close and it could of gone either way, but sadly the men lost 2-1 in the end, next time guys!!

Last weekend saw Heather, Carly, Tammy, Hallee and Ebonnie off to Country Week in Perth, playing for Roe Districts. The girls had a great weekend, with lots of good quality hockey being played and lots of fun! Well done to the Division 4 team and the Vets team on coming 5th in

both of their divisions. A big congratulations to Carly and Hallee who were apart of the winning team in the Division 2 Grand Final!! Bravo to all involved.

On Sunday 14 June Kulin Kondinin Junior

Football Club and Auskick Club sent 2 teams

to Corrigin to play in the Neu-Tech Corrigin

Cup. The age groups were "Little

Tackers" (Auskick kids) and the older teams

were made up of 8 - 11 year olds. Good job

to John Bowey who coached the Little

Tackers, it was a lot of footy for little kids!

I tagged along to see my sister, Ava,

play. Doug Ellis started off as coach, but got

Malthouse-d and a low-life goal umpire (me)

replaced him. It was good fun to see some of

the younger kids step up and take

charge. Thanks heaps to Doug for taking on the coaching

job on the day. The team played some good footy with a

few wins along the way.

Congrats to Tremayne Shae for getting KKJFC's best player

of the day award.

Great job to every one else as well and thanks to the

helpers, parents and supporters.

The Blues hosted the Narembeen Hawks in Kulin on the

weekend of the 13/14 of June.

The reserves game promised to be a tight contest as both

sides traded early goals. The Blues had their work cut out

with plenty of pressure on the ball being applied by the

Narembeen Hawks. Licka played a solid game along with

Simmo, Kody, Slip, Clayton just to name a few. The Blues

maintained a competitive brand of footy to run out

winners by 23 points to remain unbeaten for 2015.

Reserves Award Winners: J.Bennell, M.Lucchesi, C.Schorer,

K.Pratsky

The league game started with a dominant quarter from

the Blues as they took an early lead. Burger was in good

form again from the half back along with solid

contributions from Grabbers, George, Dooly, Whytie,

Ducky. The Blues controlled the game with solid tackling

pressure to run out winners by 110 points to bounce back

into the winners list. Winner of the clanger of the week

went to George Reppa for missing a goal from the goal

square nearly.

League Award Winners: A.Repacholi, D.Tholstrup, N.Lewis,

S.Lewis, J.Grabski.

The players review night after the game was a night to

remember with all 3 clubs providing the punters some

terrific entertainment. Thanks to Whytie and Willo for

organising the football club’s side of things and thanks to

Harry for stealing the final show of the night!

Another tough game awaited the Blues as we hosted

Nukarni in Kulin on Sunday the 21st. Look forward to

seeing all our supporters down there as we celebrate

Hayden Willo’s 100th game for the club.

The Blues hosted Nukarni in Kulin on the weekend.

The reserves faced their toughest battle of the season to

date as both sides traded early goals. In a physical

encounter Virgo wasted little time in being reacquainted

with the umpires, receiving a yellow card before the first

quarter was out. The Blues worked hard but struggled to

put scoreboard pressure on trailing Nukarni at the main

break. Hayden Willow led from the front again along with

solid contributions from Rob and Dave Halem, Clayton

Schorer, Cory Stuchbury, Ryan Brandis, Colby Lewis. The

Blues let the opposition slip away in the 3rd quarter which

proved too hard to peg back recording their first loss of

the season.

Reserves Award Winners: H.Williams, R.Halem, D.Halem

C.Schorer, C.Stuchbury

The league game began with a nice shower of rain to make

the conditions that little bit trickier prior to the first

bounce. In a scrappy affair both sides traded early goals

with George Rep being the main target up forward. Toby

Browning suited the conditions well along with Burger,

Timmy, Grabbers, Sam Lewy just to name a few. The Blues

gained a lead by half time and were never headed running

out winners in a tough encounter.

League Award Winners: T.Browning, S.Lewis, J.Grabski,

M.Jetta

This week the Blues travel to Hyden to take on the Saints.
