The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, Who would have thought it? Of all the magazine letters that I’ve written over the years, it’s the two concerning spiders at the end of last year that have excited the most comment! And I’m very happy with that, as I’ve shared with many people my fascination with them, and many others who most decidedly don’t… I’ve been told hair-raising tales of the deadly Redbacks encountered in the dunnies of Australia, as well as of one rather large English house spider witnessed chasing a cat! And then an Ethiopian proverb told to me which is wonderfully visual, “When spiders unite, they can tie up an elephant.” But February is not a month of much, if any, spider activity here – and so to go to the other end of the scale, and another animal that attracts great interest, and affection from many: the whale. Why? Just an excuse to share one of my favourite verses in the Bible ! It’s from the Psalms, number 104, one that celebrates the wonders of creation and its Creator. Verse 26 details God forming Leviathan specifically ‘to play’ in the deep oceans (The King James Version - other versions have ‘to sport’ and ‘to frolic’ as translations from the Hebrew.) What a picture: whales frolicking! But then they are the animal that can leap the highest of any, as they breach. But why whales breach remains a mystery. Scientists have come up with a number of theories (six so far) from which you can take your pick:

1. To communicate with others at a greater distance than the under-water sonar ‘singing’ can reach. But what they’re communicating in this way isn’t known.

2. To ‘scratch an itch’ and knock off barnacles.

3. To look out for ships.

4. To increase the aerodynamic properties of their skins to enable faster swimming.

5. To stun large prey by landing on it.

6. To play.

This last would not have qualified as ‘scientific’ until recently, (though the psalmist had it noted 3,000 years ago) but now it’s not just whales. The highly intelligent birds, the crows, have been filmed in groups, sliding down a snowy slope on their backs and then walking back up to the top to do it all over again. And then back to elephants, who in long-term studies of family groups have been observed to play tricks on each other by hiding things, and then all feigning ‘surprise’ when they’ve been found again by their owners.

Ideford Church Key Rota

February Tony & Julie (Church End)

cont. And the primates (and I’m not referring to our archbishops here) are well known for their sense of fun (or perhaps I am.) So, what experiences do we have of animals just having fun – without an ulterior reason of learning survival skills etc.? And what does it say to us of the Creator God, and our relationship with him, and each other, and his creation? With love, Stephen

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE RUNNING OF ST MARY’S? Over the last year the church in Ideford has looked at what its priorities are and (more recently) how they are financed. Here are a few questions to test your knowledge.

1. Is the salary, pension and accommodation for our vicar funded by: a) taxes on farms in the parish, b) the Church Commissioners, c) money from our parishes?

2. Who is the vicar available to give spiritual support to?

a) people on the Church roll, b) everyone, c) people who have been christened in the Church of England

3. Without church repairs, what does the running of Ideford church cost to the nearest £500?

a) £11500 b) £3500 c) £7500

4. The priorities for repairs to our church are based on

a) the opinion of the vicar b) a church architect’s report c) the opinion of the church wardens.

5. What is the average annual cost of church repairs needed over the next four years?

a) £500 b) £10000 c) £4000.

Answers in the leaflet enclosed in your parish magazine.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Local Council Elections are due to take place early May 2011. Parishioners are advised that to be able to vote in any local election they must ensure that they are registered on the Electoral Role held at Teignbridge District Council Offices. If you need to contact them please ring 01626 361101. Ever thought of becoming a Parish Councillor? A Councillor represents the concerns and aspirations of the whole electorate within the local parish, delivering or co-ordinating services to meet local needs and striving to improve quality of life in the community. The duties and pleasure of being a local councillor are many and varied, however it is the ordinary day to day contact with local people that is the most important part of being a councillor. Nominations and registration to be a councillor for the next local elections takes place at the end of March 2011 to noon on the 5th April 2011. Interested? – for more information, then please contact Karen Gardin (Parish Clerk) on 07855561030. Thank You! On behalf of the village we would like to convey our thanks and appreciation to Gordon, our resident postman, for all his efforts in managing to deliver some of our post during the severe weather. Walking to and from Chudleigh in the bitter cold and dangerous conditions was no easy feat! Thank you again Gordon for all your efforts.

Susan Coombes - A Tribute When we come together to face a new year on the first Wednesday of February 2011, many thoughts of those parishioners lost to us will be foremost in our minds. However, there will be one empty place in the hall that we are so used to being filled, a place filled by Susan Coombes. Sue was rarely absent from Council, she brought insight, common sense and humour to the proceedings. Her knowledge of the Parish, her forthright but fair opinions often helped us to form decisions. Her bravery through her illness, her kindness to others, and support for her children and grandchildren was a marvellous example for us all. We, as a Council, will miss you Sue, our community will be the poorer without you.

Angie Carter-Woodwark, Chairman Mervin King - A Tribute On Wednesday, January 19th, friends and family filled St. Mary’s Church to mourn the passing, and celebrate the life of Mervin ’Merv’ King. It was only a few weeks ago that Merv lost his wife Sue so suddenly. He had also battled with cancer for months with tremendous determination, and his own very special brand of humour. Merv always had a smile, was always willing to help anyone who needed it. As a master butcher Merv was resplendent in straw boater, immaculate white coat and striped apron, making shopping for meat an occasion! He wasn’t only master of his trade, but made his customers feel special - whether they were buying a couple of chipolatas or the finest fillet of beef. After retirement Merv enjoyed his family, and taking Sue on trips across the country. With never a hair out of place (even when sunbathing!) Merv cut a never less than immaculate figure. He was a central member of ‘The Grumpy Old Men’s Club’, meeting regularly at The Royal Oak on a Sunday evening, where his humour and anecdotes were always looked forward to. It is tragic that Merv didn’t have that retirement time he was so looking forward to, sharing many more years together with Sue. We’ll miss you Merv. Angie Carter-Woodwark

Iris would like to say a

‘Huge Thank you!’

to all the kind friends who sent flowers, fruit, cards, messages etc. during her recent stay in Torbay and Bovey Hospitals.

I love you all!

THANK YOU Thank you to all those who braved the snowy conditions to come to 'Carols in the Courtyard'. There were plenty of locals, all in fine voice and the hot soup and mulled wine kept us warm in the freezing temperatures. The children also enjoyed seeing Father Christmas and his bag of chocs! We raised £90.00 and this has been split between Shelter England and the Newton Abbot Salvation Army. Thank you to all those who contributed their time, money and refreshments.

FOR SUE COOMBES I feel honoured, and I must be honest, somewhat overwhelmed to have been asked to write a tribute to Sue’s life. As a close family friend for the past thirty-something years, it is difficult for me to know where to start my memories, let alone where to stop them…. I thought being concise and to the point was appropriate for Sue! Well, I’ll leave you to remember Sue as each of you personally knew her. Me, well, I’m off to treasure my memories and raise a glass to her life ( a glass of sherry, of course!). By the way Sue, I’ll continue to look out for Tracey and Jenna and your grandchildren. With all my love.

IDEFORD CHURCH KEY ROTA

A huge ‘Thank You’ to Tony and Julie Sharland for agreeing to co-ordinate the Church Key Rota. At

the present time there are a couple of spaces on the rota - March and October. If you feel able to

help out please contact Tony or Julie on 859397.

This is a very easy way to help with the care of our church, and involves very little time. The church

needs to be unlocked each morning (before 9.30am if poss.) and locked again in the evening. We

have held the key for the first time in January, and it has been very pleasant to have a purpose for

walking through the village twice a day. I know that some people unlock on their way to work and

lock up on their way home again - whatever fits in with your routine. Contact Tony or Julie for more

information.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH The main aim of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme is to create a partnership between the local community, the police and the local authority. Neighbourhood Watch started in the U.K. in 1982, and there are now some 150,000 schemes covering nearly five million households. What can Neighbourhood Watch Schemes do? They can target local crime problems and take action to prevent them. In consultation with the local police, they can find out from local people what crimes most concern and affect them and focus on those specific problems. Most crime is opportunist, committed on the spur of the moment, or when a car or house is left unlocked. This means there is enormous scope for education and reducing the chances for criminals. Neighbourhood Watch in Ideford It has been suggested that the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme could be revived in Ideford. If you would be interested in taking on the roll of co-ordinator, or would like more information, please contact Colin Rider on 0845 6566935 or call in to see him at the next Police Surgery. A WINTER MESSAGE During these dreary winter evenings, a house in complete darkness is a clear indication to the opportunist burglar that no one is at home. Why not consider fitting time switches to lamps and radios to give the impression that someone is at home. Also, on cold frosty mornings it is very tempting to leave the engine running on your car so that the screen is defrosting while you are indoors having that much needed cup of tea. An unlocked car, with keys in the ignition and the engine running – what a gift to any passing dishonest individual looking for an opportunity (it only takes a few seconds for your car to disappear and in the circumstances your insurance company is unlikely to pay out. It also constitutes a traffic offence!) – PLEASE DON’T DO IT!

Moving on… ...together

Our growing Churches and Mission Communities need people with different skills and experiences. As we are often reminded, we are all called to a life of faithful discipleship at home, school, work or wherever. And we each have a role in church. The whole Body of Christ thrives and grows as each of us hears and responds to God’s call, whatever our age, education, strengths and challenges. As we begin a new year we share news of three people in our own community who are responding to God’s call. Val Atkinson has been a Reader in the Haldon Team Ministry for over five years. Everyone will be aware that Val has been training for ordained ministry on the SWMTC… Val Atkinson you know. But what is SWMTC? And what is the connection between them? SWMTC - the ‘South West Ministry Training Course’ - is the ordination course for Anglican and Methodist ordinands in the peninsula, and Val began the part-time course in September 2009. The normal length of training is three years. However, due to Val having completed a three year Reader training course with SWMTC, she has been asked to complete the training in two years. Each year Val joins the 45 students at six residential weekends, and at an eight-day Easter School. Each week she attends an Exeter university evening class in Exeter to study the Bible and Theology. Each month she meets with other students from the region at the Ashburton Tutor Group. Every six weeks she meets with her Personal Tutor and also her Course Tutor. In the course of her training so far, Val has been doing lots of reading, writing assignments, keeping a Learning Journal… not to mention other practical assignments, as well as holding down her job as a sessional Chaplain at Channings Wood Prison! In her second year, Val will do a placement in another parish and at the start of 2011 she will do an assessed service and sermon. Training part-time for Christian ministry is not easy! Not for Val, nor for Ian and the rest of the family. So please continue to pray for them. Ask them how things are going. Encourage them. That way, we can all help Val become the minister God is calling her to be. And next—news of Debbie Starling’s journey towards ordination training which will begin in 2011 following the recommendation of a Bishops’ Advisory Panel a few months ago… Debbie writes:

cont. Those of you who know me already may not be aware that I lived on a farm and worshipped in Ashcombe as a child. I used to love the evensong on dark winter evenings with my mum in the little church on the hill. Even as a child I knew that there was something special about Jesus. Over the years, my faith has been tested many times. Gerard and I have two (now adult) children who have different special needs. Some may see this as a burden, but it has been the way in which we have grown to love people of all abilities and believe that God has gifted us all for His service. I work for Prospects, a Christian charity devoted to enabling people with disabilities to live their lives to the full, in mission development in churches all over the South West. I have also acted as disability awareness adviser for the Exeter Diocese for the last four years. My passion is to see more churches be places of real welcome for everyone, whatever their age, ability and standing in society. Justice is high on my agenda; I believe God loves everyone and we are all made in His image. And finally—introducing Di Caine, who will be sharing in the life of our Team Ministry as she undertakes a long placement in her ordination training, from January to March: Hi – I’m in my second year of Ordination Training. I live with my husband, Nige, and have two grown up sons, Duncan, living in Exeter and Cristen, married to Gillian in London, with their first child due any day. Nige and I have been living in Exeter for the past 14 years and we attend St. Mark’s Church, Pinhoe Road, Exeter. In August we moved to live in Teignmouth and are keen to become involved in the community here. My Home Church will remain St. Mark’s during training but I have been offered the chance to do my Long Placement in Teignmouth. I’m really excited about this opportunity to get to know the people of Teignmouth better, especially those in the church community. I heard my calling from God one lunchtime at home. I received a real strong conviction that God was calling me to be a Vicar in the Church of England and have not doubted this calling at all during the last six years of discernment and training since that call. I have doubted that I can actually achieve everything necessary from time to time but God has graciously equipped me step by step and here I am.

VISIT OF THE WATOTO CHILDREN’S CHOIR

The Watoto Children’s choir will be giving a concert at St Michael’s Church Teignmouth on Tuesday March 1st 2011 at 7.30pm. This concert will be part of their tour of this part of South Devon and will be a very important event for both the Haldon Team Ministry and the Christian Community in Teignmouth. There will be no admission charge of the concert, however a collection will be taken up for the work of Watoto as part of the concert. There will also be stalls selling CDs and merchandise from the Watoto range of gifts. St Michael’s Church has also undertaken to provide overnight accommodation for the children and their teachers and would be grateful to hear from any local homes who could provide help. The co-ordinator for the overnight stay is Steve Lea who can be contacted on 07875 712434 or [email protected] Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled internationally since 1994 as advocates for the estimated 50 million children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war, poverty and disease. Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission through their stories, music and dance. Watoto choirs act as ambassadors to raise awareness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa. Issues such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, the effects of war and the child soldier crisis in Northern Ugandan are highlighted. Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of their parents either through war or disease. They live in Watoto children’s villages. The experience gives the children exposure to other cultures broadening their worldview. It also gives them confidence and boldness and helps them rise up out of their own situations of sadness and despair. The choirs have toured Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Australasia, Canada, UK, Germany, France, USA, South America, Hong Kong, China and Japan. For more information please visit www.watoto.com
