1 February 2018, Volume 20, Issue 2 Message from the President Greetings! A couple of days with temperatures in the 70’s this past week are a good indication that the driving season will soon be in full swing. We have begun preparations for several of our major events during the last few weeks. Our application requesting permission to hold this year’s series of Cruise-Ins in downtown Kernersville again was submitted to the Town Council a few weeks ago and was happily approved by the Aldermen during their February 6 th meeting. With that approval in hand, we are ready to begin arrangements with the Kernersville Police for their assistance with closing Main Street and providing security during each Cruise-In. A few other details (NC state approval for street closures, confirming the disc jockey, scheduling the port-a-john deliveries, etc.) will be addressed during the next few weeks and, then, we will be ready to go. We have obtained the certificate documenting our liability insurance coverage from the national AACA so planning for our Purple Heart Car Show can begin and continue throughout the upcoming weeks/months. And, similar planning is underway for our new Spring Folly Cruise-In. Of course these are not the only events that will be available to us during the balance of this year. Ruth Ann, as always, will provide us with opportunities to take our cars out and enjoy many other events throughout the year. You will have numerous opportunities to show off and drive your beautiful vintage cars in 2018. The only way you can enjoy these events, however, is to participate. So, come on out whenever you can and let’s have a great 2018 driving season! Oh, one more thing. We are STILL WITHOUT A CLUB SECRETARY! Sorry to keep pestering about this, but we need someone to step up and help out. The job is not very hard but is one that is important to the operation of our club. Please contact me or one of the other Board members if you are willing to help the OSC out. That’s it for now. See you at the Olympic next Tuesday! Message from the President

Greetings!

A couple of days with temperatures in the 70’s this past week are a good

indication that the driving season will soon be in full swing. We have begun

preparations for several of our major events during the last few weeks. Our

application requesting permission to hold this year’s series of Cruise-Ins in

downtown Kernersville again was submitted to the Town Council a few weeks

ago and was happily approved by the Aldermen during their February 6th meeting.

With that approval in hand, we are ready to begin arrangements with the

Kernersville Police for their assistance with closing Main Street and providing

security during each Cruise-In. A few other details (NC state approval for street

closures, confirming the disc jockey, scheduling the port-a-john deliveries, etc.)

will be addressed during the next few weeks and, then, we will be ready to go.

We have obtained the certificate documenting our liability insurance coverage

from the national AACA so planning for our Purple Heart Car Show can begin

and continue throughout the upcoming weeks/months. And, similar planning is

underway for our new Spring Folly Cruise-In. Of course these are not the only

events that will be available to us during the balance of this year. Ruth Ann, as

always, will provide us with opportunities to take our cars out and enjoy many

other events throughout the year. You will have numerous opportunities to show

off and drive your beautiful vintage cars in 2018. The only way you can enjoy

these events, however, is to participate. So, come on out whenever you can and

2018 driving season!

g. We are STILL WITHOUT A CLUB SECRETARY! Sorry

OSC February 24th Outing

On Saturday, February 24th, our OSC will be going to The North Carolina Transportation Museum inSpencer for our February Outing. It is a family-friendly place on a 60-acre site filled with interestingexhibits and special events and is located on the site of what was once Southern Railway Company's largeststeam locomotive repair facility. The site features an authentic train depot, antique automobiles, and a 37-bay Roundhouse that includes 25 locomotives, dozens of rail cars, and other exhibit areas.

Four large exhibit buildings represent the remaining structures of the historic Spencer Shops, once SouthernRailroad's largest steam locomotive repair facility on the east coast. Buildings include the Back Shop, theMaster Mechanic's Office, and the Flue Shop. The museum is a source of education and fun for the youngand old.

Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge 1718exhibit that is on display will include weaponry, nautical tools, and personal items that belongedto those pirates under Blackbeard’s command.Touch screens will tell the pirate’s story andprovide information on the shipwreck’sdiscovery.

Celebrating Piedmont Airlines 70th

Anniversary just prior to our visit, we willsee the Piedmont Airlines DC-3 renovation, showing off the final stages of the restorationand honoring the airline that grew out of theheart of the state’s Piedmont region.

Also during our visit, we will take the 25-minutetrain ride, which offers a narrated tour of the 60-acre site, and is pulled by an antique dieselengine.

Since we will have 15+ people attending, our Group Rate will be: Adults $10.70 / Seniors & Military $9.60and I will need to collect the money beforehand to pay them in a lump sum, so if you can, bring your moneyto our meeting and it will be less time consuming the day of the event. Unfortunately, the Guided Tour willnot be available to us since there is a Boy Scout Rail Camp going on the same time so we will be on our ownfor a self-guided tour. Be aware, the museum is a walking intensive site. Our arrival time will be 1:00 pmand then our train ride is scheduled for 1:30 pm followed by our walking tour.

We will meet at the back of the Harris Teeter parking lot at the Tanglewood Commons Shopping Center,4150 Clemmons Rd., Clemmons, and leave at 10:30 am, driving to Hendrix BBQ, 615 N. Salisbury Ave.,Spencer, via Hwy. 601, for lunch beforehand and then on to the Transportation Museum after that.

Hemmings Daily Ford introduces 2019 Bullitt Mustang alongside long-hidden 1968 original

Kurt Ernst on Jan 17th, 2018

The Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT fastbackthat starred alongside Steve McQueen in Bullitt is,quite possibly, the most famous Ford Mustang onthe planet. To capitalize on this, Ford built Bullitttribute models during the Mustang’s fourth and fifthgenerations, and, for the 50th anniversary of thefilm in 2018, introduced a sixth-generation BullittMustang at the 2018 North American InternationalAuto Show. Even this model was upstaged by itsco-star, however: After decades in the shadows,Ford unveiled the original Bullitt hero car alongsideits contemporary namesake.

In January 1968, Warner Brothers purchased apair of S-code Highland Green Mustangsfastbacks, with sequential vehicle identificationnumbers, for use in the filming of the movie.Chassis 8R02S125558 was modified for use asthe stunt car, while its twin, chassis8R02S125559, was selected as the hero car, used primarily for close-ups. Both receivedchassis reinforcements, heavy-duty frontsprings, Koni shocks and a thicker anti-roll bar,and their already-potent 390 V-8s gainedmachined heads, larger four-barrel carburetorsand a hotter ignition for added performance.

From there, the paths of the two cars diverged.Chassis 558 received a roll bar that doubled as acamera mount, and a small generator (needed topower cameras and lights) was installed in itstrunk. Once production of the movie wrapped, only one of the cars – chassis 559 – remained insalable condition, while the badly damaged stuntcar, chassis 558, was sold for scrap. Longconsidered lost to history, chassis 558 surfacedearly last year, rescued from a Mexican junkyardin 2016.

Chassis 559 was purchased by Warner Brothers employee Robert Ross, who kept the car for nearly twoyears before advertising it for sale in Hemmings Motor News in 1970. Its next owner, fittingly, was NewJersey police detective Frank Marranca, who reportedly paid Ross $6,000 for the screen-used Mustang.Marranca kept the car until 1974, when it sold to Robert Kiernan for the same $6,000 the detective had paidfor it in 1970.

In 1977, Steve McQueen contacted the Kiernans looking to reacquire the Bullitt Mustang, which was then inuse as a daily driver. An equivalent Mustang was offered in exchange (plus, presumably, some unspecifiedamount of cash), but the New Jersey couple opted to keep the Bullitt Mustang instead. In 1979, Robert’swife Robbie purchased “Bulitt” vanity plates for the couple’s anniversary, and nearly 40 years later, theseremain on the car.

Robert Kiernan died in 2014, passing the Mustangalong to Sean. A year later, Sean let slip to his boss,Casey Wallace, that he was the owner of the car, prompting Wallace to enlist the help of friend andfilmmaker Ken Horstmann to document the car’shistory. One minor detail delayed the start of thevideo’s production: In 2015, the Bullitt Mustang wasin pieces, the restoration begun in 2001 nevercompleted.

Sean Kiernan, owner of the original Bullitt Mustang, poses with both cars. Photo courtesy Ford MotorCompany.

Instead of hastily restoring the irreplaceable Mustang,Sean instead opted to reassemble the car, which remainslargely original throughout (its rebuilt and repainted 390V-8 a notable exception). This task was completed in2016, and on July 4, Sean fired the 390 V-8 for the firsttime in 15-plus years. Last year, the Mustang wasreunited with a member of the McQueen family – MollyMcQueen, Steve’s granddaughter – who met with Sean ata Ford design studio in Dearborn, Michigan.

Which brings us back to the present day, and Sunday evening’s reveal of the historic Bullitt Mustang – nowincluded in the National Historic Vehicle Register – alongside the most recent modern equivalent. Basedupon a 2019 Mustang GT Premium with the Performance Package, the latest Bullitt Mustang will beavailable in the buyer’s choice of Dark Highland Green or Shadow Black paint, and will sport a retunedversion of Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 rated at “at least” 475 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Fordsays this will be good for a top speed of 163 MPH, eight MPH more than a similarly equipped Mustang GT.

In fact, the sole badge on thecar is found on the faux gas cap, which carries a“Bullitt” logo.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect the limited-production Bullitt model to command a premiumover the $43,990 base price of a 2018 Mustang GT Premium with the Performance Package. Ford isexpecting deliveries to begin in the summer of 2018.

UPDATE (22.January 2018): The first production 2019 Ford Mustang Bullit sold for $300,000 at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale sale, with proceeds going to benefit Boys Republic, a cause long championed by SteveMcQueen.

UPDATE: (8.February 2018): The 1968 Bullitt Mustang will appear in the Hagerty booth at the 2018Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, taking place from March 9-11 at the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island,Florida.

LETS GET ON THE ROAD THIS YEAR !!

On the following page is the NC Region 2018 Event Calendar for your reference. Please take note of wherethe Chapter Meets will be held. We, as a club, will try to attend some of these shows this year as part of our“Outings,” meeting and driving together to show our presence as a club. In the past, there has usually onlybeen a hand full of people that will attend these car shows so thinking it would be nice for our OSC tosupport more of these. For those of you that think you don’t have a “judgeable” car to drive, there is aspecial class called DPC which is short for “Driver Participation Class” which encompasses cars that are notthe perfect cars like off of a showroom floor. Please consider giving some of these shows a try!
