World Handicap System Leading up to the new year we heard news of a reinvented and more thorough “World Handicap System” to be implemented with 2020’s arrival. The purpose of the new system is to make the player to player comparison and competition more equitable, and to ensure a more accurate representation of a golfer’s true playing ability. While the system was designed to improve our playing and handicapping experience, many players do not understand the changes or know why an update was necessary. continued on page 2

continued from page one: World Handicap System We’re here to explain the new system and its benefits, while highlighting a few of the most important changes that are as follows:

Reduced Number of Scores Required to Establish a Handicap: Pre-2020, a player was required to have 10 scores entered in order to establish a handicap in the USGA’s GHIN system. Players are now only required to post 3 scores; and following an update, the player’s handicap will be official. Playing Conditions Calculation: In previous years there was no adjustment for abnormal playing conditions, as there was no metric for measuring the difficulty of a golf course on a given day. Player’s scores will now be compared to an expected scoring pattern for a given course, and handicaps will be adjusted considering discrepancies. These differences will reveal abnormally good or abnormally bad playing conditions, and allow for a more accurate measure of the quality of play. Frequency of Updates: Updates were most recently done on the 1st and 15th of each month, making for a somewhat static representation of the player. The new system will update every night, given the player has posted a new score on that day. This will show day-to-day changes in a player’s ability according to handicap index and should encourage players to post scores more frequently.Course Handicap: Course handicap in prior years was always in relation to the course rating, giving the player the appropriate number of strokes to play to the course rating. Course handicap is now calculated in relation to par. This update will eliminate the need for additional handicap tweaks between tees, cause a greater change in course handicap between tees, and resonate with golfers as “par” is a more widely understood term. With the new system in place, we are looking forward to a more equitable and thorough measurement of playing ability and a more enjoyable environment for all of our members and guests. If you would like to learn more about the changes that have been made, or you would like to set up a handicap, come see us in the golf shop where our golf professional staff have the information and resources to help improve your playing experience in 2020. Winter Off-Season Guest Specials Brent Ratliff, PGA Director of Golf

As we enter the winter golf season we will offer our lower rates that we hope will allow you the opportunity to enjoy the club with your friends, family, and business associates. This special promotion is good from now until Thursday, February 28, 2020. All guests playing with a member will pay the guest rate of $47.60 + tax which includes a cart for 18 holes. As an added bonus we will be offering a guest special on Saturdays. Guests must be with members after 1:00 to get the rate of $29.29 + tax including cart for all the golf you can play until dark. This special includes all weekday and executive members.

Frost Delay Information Andrew Argotsinger, First Assistant

Don’t forget about frost this time of year. When reserving your starting time please be aware of how frost can affect your time. First, the opening of the courses may be delayed if there is coverage of frost or if the greens are frozen. Secondly, if the courses are delayed in opening then starting times scheduled prior to actually opening will be lost. We will make every attempt to accommodate play-ers that have lost their times in this manner. We may start some groups on the back if available or work in groups as space allows. Most importantly, we don’t push back times for the remainder of the day based on the delay in the morning. Please consider these weather related factors when reserving your weekend times. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

GOALS FOR 2020GOLF SEASON

Luke Reilly, PGA • Assistant Golf Professional

We are already a month into 2020, which means we are getting closer to warmer weather and more golf! Have you set your goals for this golf season yet?!

The best way to improve your golf game is to set specific goals. A few examples, “I want to lower my handicap from 10 to 5 over the next 6 months”, or “I want to have over 50% GIR every round of golf by June”.

Once specific goals are set, you can begin to game plan how you are going to achieve them. Come to the golf shop and let’s discuss how we can help you achieve your goals this year!

The PGA 2020 Merchandise ShowAs many of you may know, Windyke Country Club and its employees maintain the golf shop to the highest level, offer-ing great products and great prices to all of its members and guests. One of the best opportunities for us to study and hone our skills is the PGA Merchandise Show, held every year in January.

We’ve just returned and we are excited to unveil the newest and best products that we’ve had the pleasure of testing and reviewing with all of our vendors in Orlando, Florida. Throughout our trip we were able to test out the latest equip-ment from all of the major club manufacturers, as well as the highest quality clothing and accessories we could find to make your Windyke Country Club experience more enjoyable.

If you have any questions about these products or the show, come see us in the golf shop so we can show you what makes our golf shop work.

Andrew Argotsinger, PGAFirst Assistant

Our Events program gets more exten-sive every year. Please remember that all Windyke events are reservations preferred but not required. We do sell out for many events and will not be able to seat you if you don’t have a reservation. We need you to help us serve you and your fellow members better by making reservations in advance so we can have the proper staffing and food quantities to make your evening outstanding.

A Day at Cypress Point As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, I had a chance to play Cypress Point Club in the Monterey Peninsula on Monday, January 13, at 7:15 a.m. Well, the day finally arrived! At 6:45 a.m., just prior to sunrise, I drove up the access road. It was dark and cypress trees lined the easement to the club much like the magnolias do at Augusta. Upon passing through, the parking lot sits directly in front of the clubhouse and pro shop area and consists of only 20 spaces. Another excited group of four players were chatting as I pulled in, and we may have been the entirety of play that day. Under the cover of darkness, I slipped on my golf shoes, wondering if I was breaking a rule. I moved over to the pro shop, and was greeted at the counter by Matt Watson, the assistant professional. He was warm and hospitable. I told him about growing up on the Peninsula as a boy and the thrill it was to return and play the one Peninsula course that had alluded me. I wasn’t entirely honest there, as I had scampered down a hillside full of Monterey pines while in high school just to play a few holes. It was late in the afternoon and no one was on that secluded part of the course. I carried my bag and tried to walk as if I belonged, not knowing that everyone was required to have a caddy! Matt set me up with a veteran caddy. He had been at Cypress from twenty-five years, and, ac-cording to him, was 6th on the seniority list! Kevin was a tall man in his early fifties. He had lived most his life in the area, but had spent some time in Wales as well. He was a good golfer in his own right, had grown up watching the Crosby, and had caddied in thirty-two AT&T Pro-Ams since 1985. He had seen the best up close. Kevin was laid back and courteous and had a few funny stories to tell…. a perfect fit for a perfect day. Accept for a little morning haze, the sun burst onto the scene by hole number five and the temps were typical high fifties. The breezes were light and the course was immaculate. You never see a house, although a few guard the property. I didn’t see a soul after a few holes and practically had the course to myself. After three-putting number one from 5 feet to make double, I settled down and shot +3 on the front nine. My +2 back nine saw an ocean ball on the famous sixteenth, but nothing could dampen this day. I had struck the ball well and competed against the rugged terrain and layout. More importantly, I drank in the beauty and savored its taste. God had blessed this place and that was the greatest experi-ence of all.

Tournament Season is Here! Brent Ratliff, Director of Golf

The 2020 tournament season begins this month with the Ironman. The particular information for the Ironman is listed later in the news-letter. As you can see from the list below, we have a very active tournament season planned. Tournaments are a great way to help you get the most of not only your membership, but your golf game. Having an upcoming event is a great motivator to come out and hit some balls, spend time on the putting or chipping green or take a few lessons. This will in turn almost certainly make you better and as we all know it is more fun to play better golf.

The 2020 Windyke Cup actually began last fall with Turkey Day Scramble and continues through the Dykema in September. The Windyke Cup is a yearlong points race that is intended to give players another method of competing against all ability levels and handicaps of players. For complete details on the Windyke Cup, see our website at www.windyke.com.

We hope that providing you with the schedule this far in advance, it will allow you to plan your year to make sure that you are able to play in the events OF YOUR CHOICE. If you have any questions, comments or concerns as always I am here to discuss them.

First off, I want to say THANK YOU to John Romeo, our 2019 President of The Board. John did an amazing job leading the board and serving the members of Windyke in a year that saw record growth and lots of positive trends in the golfing industry. We are so grateful for John and cannot express our sincere appreciation for all he did as President. It’s almost time for a competitive round…have you hit any range balls in 2020 yet? The Board of Di-rectors are excited as the anticipation of the first tournament of the new year is on the horizon. We believe the club is the healthiest it has been in a long time and a lot of that has to do with the outstanding mem-bers and staff we have. The current Windyke Staff is extremely strong, and I know that they will continue to serve our members with the best interest at heart. Last year the board had a strong emphasis on new member ambassadors and making sure folks felt at home when they step on the grounds of Windyke. We want all members, new and old to fully under-stand what all the club has to offer. We want to continue the efforts and event take it a step further in get-ting folks re-engaged in our club. The board of directors has different chairs and sub-committees that focus on all areas of Windyke including championships, ladies golf, swimming and tennis, food and beverage, handicap, greens, etc. Our Board of Directors do their very best to stay on top of all aspects and we hope to continue to be a voice of the members. If you have any questions or concerns about the club, please do not hesitate to reach out to any board members or send me an email at [email protected] . Finally, I would like to recognize our new 2020 board members Ben McCullar, Rob Stallins and Phil Mosley and welcome them to our great team of dedicated board members. Lastly, I want to personally thank Bill Lange for his time on the board of directors. Bill is an avid golfer, an industry expert, and a re-spected voice that always speaks on behalf of the members. Thank you Bill for your dedication to the Board of Directors. ~ Jimbo Robinson, Board President
