Tacna : Picture handed by Peruvian Radio Uno de Tacna shows hundreds of peoplewho remained stranded at the bus terminal of Tacna, 1.200 Km south of Lima, Peru, onFebruary 21, 2012, after chile closed its main border crossing with Peru after torrentialrains on Monday washed anti-personnel and anti-tank mines onto a key highway. "Themines came down toward the northern Route 5, and with the carabineros (police) andthe army, a decision was taken to close the highway," said Ximena Valcarce, mayor ofarica. Border tensions periodically flare as a legacy of a mid-19th century war thatended with the transfer to chile of a portion of southern Peru and Bolivia's entire Pa-cific coastline and in 1975 the chilean military planted thousands of anti-personneland anti-tank mines in the area. chile has been working to de-mine the area since 2004under an international treaty banning anti-personnel mines. (AFP) - Internet giant Yahoo!on Tuesday applied to be re-moved from a lawsuit lodgedin an Indian court against so-cial networking sites hostingallegedly offensive content.

More than 20 Internetfirms, including Google andFacebook, have been named inthe case, which follows meet-ings between governmentministers and the companiesover material seen as offend-ing Muslims or defaming

politicians. Yahoo! was made part of

the lawsuit "on the patentlymistaken assumption that it isa social networking website",lawyers for the company saidin a district court hearing inDelhi.

The lawyers added therewas "no cause of action"against Yahoo!, and describedthe case, which has beenbrought by a member of thepublic, as "a complete abuse of

the process of law". Telecoms Minister Kapil

Sibal has pressurised global In-ternet firms to crack down onoffensive material but he hasdenied accusations of censor-ship, saying they only had toobey the same rules governingthe press.

Google and Facebook saidearlier this month that they hadremoved allegedly offensivecontent used as evidence incourt.

The groups have appealedto the Delhi High Court askingfor cases against them to bequashed on the basis they can-not be held responsible fortheir clients' actions.

(AFP) - Former astronaut JohnGlenn Monday has the 50thanniversary of the flight thatmade him the first Americanspaceman, with vivid memo-ries but also regret over thecurrent state of the US spaceprogram.

On February 20, 1962,Glenn blasted off from CapeCanaveral aboard an Atlasrocket to make three orbitsaround the Earth in just underfive hours, a voyage that madehim a national hero and re-stored confidence in America'sability to compete in spacewith Russia.

"It seems to me like it wasabout a week or so ago, be-cause I guess I've recalled itquite often over the past 50years and that's kept it fresh,"Glenn told CNN Monday.

"It was such an impressivething at the time that it's in-delibly imprinted on my mem-

ory and I can recall those daysvery vividly."

He was to attend a gala laterMonday at Ohio State Univer-sity in Columbus, Ohio in cel-ebration of the historic flightaboard the craft Friendship 7.

He was also to join NASAAdministrator Charles Boldenin a live chat with the crew ofthe International Space Sta-tion, kicking off a two-day"Future Forum" at the univer-sity in which he was also to at-tend a panel session.

Despite the outpouring ofattention, it's bittersweet forthe US hero because the firstnation to land people on theMoon now depends on Russiafor its manned space flights.

Glenn, who served as aDemocratic senator from 1974through 1999, said last weekthat the administration of for-mer president George W. Bushsacrificed US space ambitionsby cutting NASA's funding.

"I think it's too bad," hesaid. "I just hope some of theefforts now to recreate ourown (space) transportationsystem come through."

NASA is relying on privateenterprises to develop systemsto replace the shuttle program, which is expected to happen inabout five years.

One of the companies,SpaceX, is scheduled to launchthe first commercially builtspacecraft to the InternationalSpace Station on March 20.

LOS CABOS (AFP) - USSecretary of State Hillary Clin-ton has urged major economiesto ensure transparency bystate-backed companies, say-ing that all countries wouldbenefit from a "rules-basedsystem."

Senior officials from theGroup of 20 major economiesare holding two days of talks inthe Mexican resort of LosCabos, a deliberately informalsetting aimed at sparking dia-logue ahead of a full G20 sum-mit in June.

Some of the world's topdiplomats started their daywith a group trip to watch theplentiful whales off the coastin the Pacific Ocean.

Clinton, speaking later to asit-down session Sunday, called on the Group of 20 --which represents some 85 per-cent of the global economy --to address the rise of "statecapitalism" in the global econ-omy.

While acknowledging thatthe US record was not perfect,Clinton said all countries that"benefit from open, free, trans-parent and fair competitionhave a vital interest in protect-ing it and a responsibility tofollow the rules."

Clinton said the G20 couldfind a model in the so-calledSantiago Principles, the guide-lines offered in 2008 under theInternational Monetary Fundcalling for transparency bystate-owned investment bodiesknown as sovereign wealthfunds.

"There are many importantissues that affect the lives ofbillions of people across theworld on which the interna-tional community is failing tomake any discernibleprogress," Espinosa said.

She mentioned issues suchas green growth, sustainabledevelopment and the rule oflaw.

"It is only natural that gov-ernments promote their owninterests, but they must do soin a way that takes into accountglobal needs transcending nar-row national interests," shesaid.

Meanwhile, G20 financeministers and central bankheads were expected to meet inMexico next weekend to dis-cuss way to increase fundingfor the International MonetaryFund in the face of a financialcrisis in Europe.

DUBAI (AFP) - Ana Ivanovicupset the seedings in a battleof former French Open cham-pions with Francesca Schi-avione at the Dubai Open onTuesday, insisting afterwardsthat there is still another GrandSlam title left in her.

The 2008 Roland Garroschampion from Serbia beat the2010 champion from Italy 6-1,7-5 with a first-round perform-ance that belied her relativedecline over the past threeyears.

Ivanovic hurtled so quicklyinto a 5-0 lead, with suchforceful blows from her firstserve and forehand, that itseemed unlikely that shewould be troubled.

But Schiavone summoneda typically tenacious second-set performance, twice recov-ering from dropped service

games and threatening to dothat a third time beforeIvanovic closed the match outin a tight finish.

"I believe I can get back tothe top and win a Grand Slamagain -- that's why I am here,"said Ivanovic. "If that wasn'tgoing to happen or I didn't feelthat it could, I wouldn't behere.

"It's strange that at the ageof 24 I am considered old. It'sa great challenge for us playerswho have been around for awhile," she said, referring tothe rise during 2011 of Victo-ria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, and Caroline Wozniacki.

Ivanovic was also pleasedwith the way in which she han-dled a finish in which her Eng-lish coach Nigel Searsunexpectedly appeared oncourt before she could servefor the match for a secondtime.

Asked why she had calledfor him, Ivanovic said: "I did-n't -- he just stood up andcame! He said: 'You are doinga good job, just keep at it.'

Ivanovic neverthelessneeded the help of the Hawk-eye video system before reach-ing match point.

Schiavone's net approachwas called in, but the com-puter simulation showed theball landing an inch wide.

Ivanovic celebrated byclosing out the match immedi-ately with a fine first serve.

Earlier, another seed, Ag-nieszka Radwanska -- the fifthseed from Poland -- narrowly

survived. She was 3-5 down in the

final set against AleksandraWozniak, a Canadian qualifierwho had had the advantage ofplaying three times already onthese courts, before escaping6-1, 6-7 (6/8), 7-5.

Daniela Hantuchova wasalso behind in the final set insimilar circumstances.

The former world numberfive from Slovakia was down1-3 against lucky loser PolonaHercog and then again by 1-3in the final set tie-break.

Hantuchova eventuallysqueezed home 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(7/4) against the rising top 40Slovenian -- partly with thehelp of a Hercog double faultthat relinquished a mini-breakin the tie-break, but also bybeing bold enough to takemore risks in attack.

Marion Bartoli was anotherheavyweight to fall, the num-ber six seed from France beingbeaten 6-4, 6-3 by China'sPeng Shuai.

Bartoli retired with a calfproblem after one set in Satur-day's semi-finals in Doha andafter this time taking 3-0 leadsin both sets, she slowedmarkedly, and ended thematch limping.

Peng next plays Hantu-chova. Ivanovic, meanwhile, faces Russia's Maria Kir-ilenko, who is suffering from aneck injury, and has a chanceof earning a quarter-finalmeeting with defending cham-pion Wozniacki.
