The Sacraments of Service (or Vocation) Marriage

The Catholic Sacrament of Matrimony means becoming husband and wife through a sacred convenant with God and each other. Marriage is a vocation—a calling from God. The bride and groom must enter into the Sacrament with the intention that their union will be permanent (until death), faithful (without adultery) and fruitful (open to the possibility of children, as God wills). A valid Catholic Sacramental wedding requires the pres-ence of a priest or deacon. Holy Orders

Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Holy Orders at the Last Supper, along with the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Men who are ordained as deacons, priests and bishops are the only ones who receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The purpose of Holy Orders is to provide holy spiritual leaders and shepherds for God’s flock in the Church.

The Sacraments of Healing

Reconciliation (Penance, Confession)

This beautiful Sacrament is for spiritual healing. Jesus gave his apostles the power to forgive or retain sins, which has been handed down to Catholic priests, who serve the Church in the person of Christ. Jesus, in His abundant love and mercy, wants to make available to His followers the ability to repent and confess our sins, so that we may be reconciled to Him and receive His gift of grace and healing in our souls. To be in God’s grace, Catholics must confess all known mortal sins to a priest, who will then prescribe an act of penance and provide absolution. A priest is bound by the seal of the confes-sional to maintain the strictest confidence and may never reveal what was confessed to them. Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick is for those who are near death, struggling from critical illness, elderly, or facing serious surgery. Those with chronic or recurring condi-tions may be anointed more than once. The Sacra-ment of Anointing offers prayers for healing and recov-ery, but also for comfort, strength and peace for the soul of the ailing person. It offers a special grace to calm the spirit.

The Sacraments are the best source of God’s divine grace. They were instituted by Jesus Christ for our salvation. Last week’s bulletin contained information on the Sacraments of Initiation. More details about each of the Sacraments can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

Stewardship Reflection for February 24, 2019 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

“But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without expecting anything back.” (Luke 6:35)

Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and com-passion more frequently. Start with the little daily an-noyances that we experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that per-son. Mercy and compassion will put us on the path to holiness. IHM Ministry of the Week

This week we recognize our Home & School Associa-tion (HSA). This group of dedicated parent volun-teers offers support to our principal, faculty and school students in numerous ways. They organize regular activities for the student body and fundraisers to benefit the mission of our school. Some of the ac-tivities that the HSA organizes include:

Grandparents’ Day

Donuts for Dad

Muffins for Mom

Catholic Schools Week

Smart Scrip

We are very grateful for the generous and varied gifts of stewardship found in the HSA, and for all that they do to help IHM Catholic School.

Diocese of Madison Annual Catholic Appeal 2019

“In the Light of Faith” All households in the Madison Diocese were recently sent a pledge form in the mail. If you haven’t already done so, please complete it and mail it back to the Diocese of Madison. Each pledge to the Annual Cath-olic Appeal supports diocesan ministries, education and services and assures a strong future for the Dio-cese of Madison and the people that it serves.

The goal that has been set for our parish for this year is $76,285, as compared to last year’s goal of $70,558. The past three years, our parish has met or exceeded our goal. THANK YOU to everyone who has offered their gifts of support to the work of our diocesan church.

Next weekend, March 2-3, Fr. Chad will be leading the in-pew process for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Those who have not made a pledge by mail will be asked to do so that weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

IHM Lenten Dates

Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019

Mass Times:

7:00 a.m. 8:30 a.m. 7:00 p.m.

For Catholics, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are oblig-atory days of fasting (age 18 to 59) and abstinence from meat (ages 14 and older). In addition, all Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence from meat. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Old Palm Branches

Please bring your old palm branches to church and place them in the containers in the church entrances. Return them before Palm Sunday, April 14. They will be burned in the Easter Vigil fire. IHM Lenten Almsgiving

Our parish Lenten almsgiving will once again support "The Beacon" homeless day resource center in Madison. The Beacon connects homeless individuals to critical services and resources, helping them find opportunities towards a better life. Our small daily sacri-fices can make a big difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters in need.

Coffee cups will be available in the back of church beginning on Ash Wednesday. Please take one or more home with you. As you fast during Lent from things that you enjoy, such as coffee, candy, soda, eat-ing out, etc., set aside the money you would normally have spent, and place it in

the coffee cup. Return it on Palm Sunday weekend – whatever is collected will be given to the Beacon. Last year, our Lenten almsgiving gift to The Beacon was $2,760!

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

Making and Keeping Our Homes a Safe Haven

Last month, we observed Safe Haven Sunday, which was dedicated to creating awareness and praying about the effects of pornography on our families and culture. We also offered copies of a book entitled “Equipped” to all parish households with children. There are still copies of this book available. If you’d like one, please call the par-ish office.

Pornography impacts many people across many age cat-egories. It has become a widespread problem in our so-ciety, especially with the easy access and free content found on the internet.

This is a matter that can no longer be ignored. We must not be silent while souls are being enslaved to this ex-plicit and immoral material. Yet, we also must remember that there is help, hope and healing available.

Please visit www.covenanteyes.com. There are resources available, as well as a subscription that can protect your children and family members.

Also, let us pray for those who are struggling with the temptation or addiction to view pornography, as well as those who make a living from it.
