Second Sunday of Lent

II Domingo de Cuaresma
REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
Just as the first Sunday of Lent was dedicated to Jesus’s
temptations in the desert by Satan, the second Sunday of
Lent employs Jesus’ Transfiguration. Thus, beginning the
season with emphasis on Jesus’ humanity and following
that with emphasis on Jesus’ divinity, Holy Mother the
Church reveals the totality of Christ’s being. Emphasis is
placed squarely upon whom it is that will endure the
salvific sacrifice. Just as Peter, James and John caught a
glimpse of the total reality, so too, we are privileged to
consider the complexity of Christ’s nature. This Divine act
of pure love by God for His creation should evoke a
reciprocal loving response.
In today’s first reading from the Book of Genesis, the
story of Abraham and Isaac is told. In this covenantal
story, God desires to test Abraham’s faith. In this
account, Abraham is told to take his only son on a
journey in which the father is to sacrifice his only heir.
This is quite disconcerting and confusing for Abraham.

BETTER MEALS IN MADAGASCAR
In Madagascar, half of all children are undernourished. That means 50% of kids won’t grow to reach their full potential. But communities are changing this by focusing
on improving health and nutrition. What role has food played in your life? How can you help those who lack access to enough nutritious food.

...In the ancient world, a son was the guarantee for immortality. There was an universal acceptance that an individual gained immortality through his heirs.
Thus, when God demanded the sacrifice of Isaac to prove man’s love, it meant for Abraham the possibility of the loss of immortality! However, when God saw that Abraham was willing to offer his son out of love, the Divine Lord stopped him and supplied a ram. In addition to this act of mercy, God promised infinite heirs to Abraham “more numerous than the stars” in another Covenantal agreement, demonstrating that the Divine Love of God cannot be surpassed.
The extent of this Divine Love is the topic of our reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans. The Apostle to the Gentiles reminds the Romans that God’s love cannot be measured. Paul argues that God’s immeasurable love was manifested by the sacrifice of Christ, His Son, on the cross. He who was without sin was made sin for our salvation. Paul explains in a judicial manner that what we lack Christ has fulfilled. As a result, through Christ mankind will share the rewards garnered through this perfect sacrifice.
Finally, in the Gospel of Mark, the Transfiguration
of the Christ is revealed. Being a Theophanic episode, the Transfiguration of Jesus allows Peter, James and John the privilege of seeing Christ in all His glory. In further testament, the apostles were also blessed in hearing the Father when He recognized Jesus’ sonship and instructed all to listen
to listen to him. This revelation would be imprinted upon their very being as it was a prelude of something greater to come. This vision could only corroborate the teachings of Christ and embolden their faith which would be challenged on the Cross.
Holy Mother the Church begins our Lenten season articulating the dual nature of Jesus. In order to better appreciate Christ’s divine love for his Church, the season is started reminding all of the depth of love God has for His people. The Creator has offered His love as well as
adoption to all who accept Jesus as Savior. It is up to each individual to accept or reject His love. Reminded through these readings, we are called to purify ourselves in anticipation of the great Paschal Feast. Through prayer, fasting and alms’ giving, we are exhorted to strengthen ourselves in order to become more Christ-like. We, too, are called to take our cross and bear it with the Savior in order to join our brother in his gift of love. Once joined, we will be raised in His glory as it was prefigured in the Transfiguration.
