Eric Vardon - Arcane

Mr. Leushner has had an extensive and diverse business career in the life sciences and biotechnology industries. He has participated in many entrepreneurial start-up companies, which have included medical devices, diagnostics, and therapeutics. He was also responsible for developing a national molecular diagnostics program for MDS Inc., Canada's largest life science's company, and served as a business analyst and portfolio advisor to the Canadian Medical Discoveries Fund. In 2004, Mr. Leushner co-founded Sernova Corp. currently traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In addition he developed an Islet Transplant Program for the London Health Sciences Centre and served as a Director for Health Care Restructuring. Mr. Leushner is currently the Vice President, Operations & Startup Services at TechAlliance of South Westen Ontario, where he manages a team of advisors, analysts and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence who work with more than 200 technology companies in a variety of industries (Digital Media/ICT, Life Sciences, Clean Tech and Advanced Manufacturing).

Allyson is the Manager of Business Development and Measured Innovation at TechAlliance of Southwestern Ontario, a regional innovation centre focused on supporting tech entrepreneurs in London, Sarnia, and the surrounding region. Prior to TechAlliance, she worked as a start-up consultant and an investment analyst in the life science field. She has a keen interest in financing small businesses and recently set up a partnership with Indiegogo, with fee discounts and campaign help for TechAlliance clients and other members of the community.

Sergio is a passionate individual that thrives in connecting the dots of opportunity. Currently, he works for the Ontario Centres of Excellence as a business development manager leading industry-academic projects and start-up opportunities in Southwestern Ontario. As an architect of change, his primary role is to work alongside private and public stakeholders to identify key innovation opportunities and de-risk their development and commercialization through investment. His areas of expertise range from advanced health technologies to information technologies and digital media.

Prior to joining OCE, Sergio worked as a commercialization consultant for The Hospital for Sick Children, the University of California Irvine and was an integral member of SteriSense Inc., a biotech venture creating new detection and diagnostic tools for bacterial infection and contamination control.

Market Readiness

The Market Readiness Program directly funds early-stage commercialization by start-up companies. The ultimate goal of the program is to support the growth of start-ups into scalable businesses.

Market Readiness (Company Building)

• $250,000, 100% cash

• OCE invests $250,000, partner must match with a minimum of $250,000 in cash

Market Readiness (Customer Creation)

• Minimum $100,000 - Maximum $125,000

• 50% cash, 50% in-kind, OCE invests $125,000, partner must match with a minimum of $62,500 in cash and $62,500 in-kind

SmartStart Seed Fund

• Supports new ventures led by Ontario's next generation of entrepreneurs

• Assists young entrepreneurs from 18 to 29 move their start-ups from product development to market entry and company building

• Provides seed financing and entrepreneurship skills training • Applicants:
