Clark Perry, DO, our medical director for service excellence, a 2016 survey found more than 80 percent of those asked had visited online physician review sites at least once, and some had used these sites multiple times. About three-quarters of those visiting review sites said they read those reviews before their first visit with a provider. These sites seem particularly valuable to consumers choosing a primary care provider—for example, more than half of new parents say they used online information exclusively when selecting a pediatrician. Frequently visited sites include Healthgrades, Angie’s List, Yelp and Rate MD. Unfortunately, these sites often display only a limited number of reviews, and there’s no way to guarantee the reviews were written by actual patients. So, Community started looking into offering patient feedback on our own “find-a-doc” section of eCommunity.com. Tom Malasto, chief patient experience officer, launched the process in 2015, in partnership with Community Physician Network leadership, CPN’s service excellence leadership and committee, medical directors, the Office of Patient Experience, marketing and communications, and NRC Health. In mid-January, with overwhelming support from our physicians, we went live with patient comments along with ambulatory provider ratings converted into star ratings. We now join other prominent organizations—such as Cleveland Clinic, Tenet Health, Johns Hopkins and Intermountain—offering the same physician-review format. On average, patients award CPN providers 4.83 stars out of 5, making us among the nation’s highest patient-rated provider systems! Our site boasts an average of more than 200 reviews per provider…in fact, our high number of reviews helps us rank at or near the top of Google searches.

Now Online…Ratings and Reviews of Our Providers

Times are changing, and so are the methods people use to choose a new physician. While many potential patients receive recommendations from family, friends and neighbors, a large percentage of people turn to the Internet to help make this decision.

According to R.

TIME TO FINISH YOUR MANDATORIES • • • It’s again time for Community team members—including but not limited to employees, contractors, contingent workers, agency workers and providers—to complete mandatory training. For most employees, training has been added to your learning plan in MySuccess Center, and the deadline to complete the training is March 22. (Note that the mandatory training process is different for employees of Community Anderson). To potentially save you some time, some of the training modules have a test-out option, giving you the chance to take the test without first completing the e-learning course. If you pass the test, you won’t have to complete the e-learning. If you successfully test out, you should be able to get through all of the mandatories in about 45 minutes. It’ll take about 90 minutes if you don’t test out. To complete your mandatories, just go to InComm > Learn > MySuccess Center, then sign in using your Community network username and password.

COUNT YOUR STEPS, EARN WELLNESS POINTS • • • Want to earn another 100 wellness points? Just take enough steps in the latest wellness challenge, “Spring into Shape.” It runs from February 13 through April 10, and you must sign up by February 19 to take part. The goal is to hit at least 308,000 steps during the eight weeks of the challenge. Remember, collecting wellness points in 2017 helps you earn a special 2018 bonus contribution to your health reimbursement account or health savings account, to help pay your healthcare bills next year. To earn the full $750 reward, you’ll need to collect 1,000 points in the 2017 program, and the deadline is the end of September. Sign up or learn more by visiting mywellness.eCommunity.com.

AN EPIC GO-LIVE • • • As of the beginning of this month, Community Howard is now officially live on our CareConnect Epic Systems applications. A support system of Community team members is now in place to ensure that Community Howard employees don’t feel as though they’re “going it alone” as they begin using the new system. The knowledge management team members supporting effort include a 24/7 command center staffed

with 60-plus employees available to help with technical or application questions. There are 40 Epic super users on the ground throughout the region, plus 30 credentialed trainers and 13 informaticists at the elbow of Community Howard providers. It has truly been a team effort!

BRIDGE LINKS TWO HOSPITALS • • • The ribbon has been cut to officially open the new connector bridge linking Community North with Community Heart and Vascular Hospital. The bridge is not open to the general public, but is being used for patient transports and staff connections. The result is much simpler and faster transport for patients—last year more than 280 patients were transported between the facilities, and the number is expected to be even higher this year. The bridge removes the need to involve an ambulance in patient transfer, and its design reflects the critical health needs of the patients who will be transported through it. Emergent pharmacy supplies are in place and an AED will be available should a patient’s condition decline during the transition from facility to facility. Nine specialty phones are located every 100 to 150 feet in case there’s a need to call for assistance, and the bridge is spacious enough to allow two beds or chairs to pass each other during transport along the hallway. The design also reflects the need for patient privacy…some areas of the connector that pass near the behavioral health pavilion and the intensive care unit have fogged or mirrored glass.

OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD ICD-10 CONSULTING • • • Pat Schmitter, senior healthcare consultant with Visionary Health Group, a division of Community Visionary Enterprises Inc., recently had the opportunity to offer ICD-10-CM education to employees at NASA. Schmitter, a certified coder and instructor, has been providing ICD training for 10 years, but says the request from NASA was the most unusual and surprising. Her visit to NASA included a background check and security clearance, then meeting with a team of about 50 physicians. Schmitter says NASA has a large occupational health clinic that serves employees across the nation’s space centers. While NASA physicians do not interact with health insurance providers the same way we do at Community, they recognize the importance of standardizing their documentation and coding. Schmitter is looking forward to a return invitation from NASA later this year.

WALTON NAMED CHIEF NURSE EXECUTIVE FOR AMBULATORY CARE SERVICES • • • Community has named Kim Walton, RN, MSN, CNS, chief nurse executive for ambulatory care services. She’s been with the network since 1998, serving most recently as executive director and chief clinical officer for behavioral health services. In her new role, she’ll provide operational and nursing leadership for ambulatory care services, with a focus on profitable growth, market share expansion and outstanding patient and customer experiences. As a member of the ambulatory executive leadership team, she’ll be responsible for hardwiring clinical processes and systems for quality outcomes, as well as leading efforts on care redesign for team-based care.

KRONOS GETS AN UPGRADE • • • Just a reminder that Community will upgrade to a new version of the Kronos timekeeping system on February 27. The change will impact employees in most locations (but note that Community Anderson uses a different system). Employees who clock in/out using time clocks, web or phone will see only minimal changes. The most significant change will be for those employees who transfer their time to different business units and departments. Instead of entering the business unit and department numbers in two separate fields, the new version of Kronos will have one field for both numbers. More info is on the way for affected employees. There will also be a new feature, the MyCalendar tab. That’ll be used for self-scheduling, trading a shift, scheduling PTO or signing up for open shifts. Look for more information on that in the coming weeks, too.

RILEY-TRAINED PHYSICIANS AT PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT • • • The new pediatric intensive care unit is up and running at Community North. Staffing the unit are Riley-trained pediatric critical care physicians, led by Dr. Matthew Friedman, who work closely with our pediatric hospitalist team. The new four-bed unit, located in the hospital’s pediatric unit, allows us to extend the quality and specialized care of a children’s hospital, without having to build one. Those in need of that care can now receive it where they feel most comfortable—close to home. Community physicians and staff are being Riley-trained as well, and we will gradually increase the acuity level of admissions to ensure favorable outcomes. This collaboration expands our maternal fetal medicine and pediatric subspecialist coverage.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COMMUNITY SURGERY CENTER! • • • Community Surgery Center North is celebrating 25

years this month! It was the network’s first surgery center, and later this year will serve its 250,000th patient. The picture shown here was taken about a year after the surgery center opened under its original name, Indiana Surgery Center. At a recent celebratory dinner, attendees raised $4,000 in honor of the anniversary, to donate to charity.

HEALING GARDEN TO GROW AT MARIAN UNIVERSITY • • • Community Westview Hospital, which closed in December, helped play a powerful role in raising the prominence of osteopathic medicine in Indiana. As one osteopathic physician and educator told The Indianapolis Star, “osteopathic physicians are accepted everywhere…they no longer need to be in an osteopathic hospital.” To commemorate the legacy of Community Westview, the Westview Hospital Guild and Marian University are working to relocate the hospital’s Healing Garden to the nearby college campus that includes an osteopathic medical school. Designs for the Westview Memorial Garden include a fire pit and seating wall area, which will incorporate the Westview pavers from the Healing Garden. It will feature paths through the university’s Japanese tea garden along with plants, seating and features from the Westview campus. The story of the hospital’s founding and history will be shared as well, along with recognition plaques from the original Healing Garden. The Westview Hospital Guild has provided financial support, and the installation is expected to open in May.

SAVE THE DATE: CANCER CENTER OPEN HOUSE • • • It’s not just a building, but what’s inside. The all-new Community Cancer Center North, located on the North campus at 7979 N. Shadeland Ave., will be filled with hope, collaboration and easy navigation. Patients will find world-class care from a multidisciplinary team of certified medical experts, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and treatment protocols. The center was designed as a model for integrated healthcare to meet patients’ personal needs and offers spaces devoted to physical therapy, support groups, art and music therapy, tai chi, massage and more. Our list of comprehensive services is ever-evolving—so come see our outstanding showcase of robust treatment opportunities, care programs and the essential healing environment that only Community can provide. You can check out the newest Community facility on Saturday, April 22. Ribbon-cutting is at 9:15, and guided tours will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

The Westview Memorial Garden will have a design similar to this example

E 6VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: SERVING

SCHOOLCHILDREN • • • The foundations of

health and well-being are often built outside

our care sites…which is one of the reasons

we are so active in local schools. Here’s a new

opportunity for making a difference in the

lives of schoolchildren. It’s called RightFit,

and it’s a partnership with Indianapolis Public

Schools and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

RightFit is an after-school program that

creates an opportunity for elementary school

students to build positive relationships with public safety, fights childhood obesity through nutrition-oriented education and

physical activity, and also includes a “third meal.” The program depends on volunteer support, including volunteer mentors

who engage and encourage students and ensure that each student experiences success academically and socially. You can also

help with activities or the meal program. All participants are required to complete an online background check, which will be

provided free of charge. Want to be part of this program, which runs through June? Please be ready to commit to serving twice

a week between about 4 and 6 p.m. (and more is even better!) If you’re interested in volunteering, please click on the link below to

send an email to the organizer.

GET YOUR TICKETS TO THE GIVING GAME • • • Pack the house for a good cause! The Indy Fuel have partnered

with Community Health Network Foundation for The Giving Game, an Indy Fuel hockey game against the Fort

Wayne Komets on February 24. All proceeds from tickets purchased at the special link below, as well as funds raised

by a special jersey auction after the game, will benefit the Oncology Patient Assistance Fund, which provides cancer

patients facing financial challenges with $250 vouchers for healthy food, lifesaving medicine and gas to get to and

from treatment. The need among our patients is great, with nearly 500 vouchers distributed in 2016 alone. Get

your give on and enjoy a fun, family-friendly night with the Fuel! And thanks to the Fuel for their support of our

behavioral health services at a game in January. Buy tickets to The Giving Game at the special link below.

E 7IT’S HEART MONTH…KNOW YOUR NUMBERS! • • • Community is supporting and participating in the GoRed Luncheon on February 24, providing A1c screening to attendees along with information on heart health, heart healthy nutrition and stroke awareness. In fact, in honor of American Heart Month, this month, Community Heart and Vascular is hosting free community walk-in Know Your Numbers screenings at various locations throughout the month, plus an A1c blood sugar screening for community members by appointment on February 21. Visit eCommunity.com/screening or call 800-777-7775 to schedule, and click on the link below to learn more about the Know Your Numbers walk-in screenings.

HEART-FOCUSED MARKETING FOR HEART MONTH • • • Our cardiovascular marketing campaign in recognition and support of Heart Month runs through February 28 across central Indiana, including print ads, radio and online (digital) promotion. The messages share patient stories while also providing key messages about our CV physicians’ expertise, innovation and advanced heart care. The ads will drive consumers to our website, eCommunity.com/heart, or to our call center for more information and to schedule an appointment. We’ll track the campaign through web visits and call center activity.

KNITTED HATS HONOR HEART MONTH • • • Thanks to the American Heart Association, which recently donated small knitted hats to

Community maternity units. The donation is intended to raise awareness of heart-healthy lifestyles, in honor of Heart Month.

A NEW WAY TO FIND POLICIES • • • Community is in the midst of rolling out PolicyStat, a new tool to manage and access policies. Human resources and compliance are the first departments to go live. That means if you’re looking for a policy related to either of these departments, you’ll now search and access them from PolicyStat. Community Anderson has also been using PolicyStat since November. We’ll continue to move other policies to PolicyStat in the coming months, but in the meantime, all other policies are still in our legacy policy tool. We’ve updated the search page on InComm, giving you easy access to Search, PolicyStat and links to the policies.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYMPOSIUM THIS MONTH • • • It’s an afternoon of continuing education, exhibits and networking with fellow cardiovascular caregivers. The Bridges to the Future Cardiovascular Symposium takes place from noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, at the Indianapolis Marriott North. The event includes lunch and a series of eight presentations by Community physicians. The symposium is free, but seating is limited—register by calling 888-328-8869 or visiting eCommunity.com/cvsymposium.

IT’S A WRAP FOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM • • • Congratulations to the first graduating class of the Community Health Network Advanced Leadership Series, presented as a partnership with Butler University. About a dozen and a half Community leaders took part in the six-month course focused on the fundamentals of business in healthcare.

The goal was to help participants boost their business knowledge in areas such as human resources, finance, marketing, performance improvement, leadership, investment and management. As part of the work, participants took part in a number of strategic projects on such topics as patient care redesign, OR throughput optimization, digital transformation of care, leader standards, and electronic smart boards.

PHYSICIAN SPEAKING AT BUTLER • • • “The Brain Project” is a speakers’ series focused on a variety of topics related to the human brain. The events take place on Butler University’s campus and are free and open to the general public. Among those talks scheduled is “Addictions and the Brain,” featuring Community behavioral health additions specialist Tim Kelly, M.D. It’s scheduled for 7:30 p.m. February 9, in Jordan Hall Room 141.

ALLIANCE FOR HEALTHIER INDIANA • • • It’s been a busy time in the work of promoting a healthier community. Community was instrumental in helping to create the Alliance for a Healthier Indiana, and together with our alliance partners, we’re tackling the high rate of smoking as a first endeavor. The alliance, including Community president and CEO Bryan Mills, has been promoting state legislation that would, among other things, raise the smoking age and increase taxes on tobacco. That legislation is presently working its way through the legislative process at the Statehouse.

EAP PROGRAM TO COLLECT IBJ HONORS • • • The collaborative employee assistance program that Community helped create for Indianapolis Department of Public Safety personnel is set to be honored in the upcoming Indianapolis Business Journal Health Care Heroes awards program. The EAP initiative is called

Comprehensive Counseling Services, and was launched for the department’s first-response employees, providing them with an additional counseling option to turn to in times of need. Six local hospital systems and the Indy Public Safety Foundation partnered to make the program a reality.
