With 2013 upon us &looking busier thanever, it’s safe to saythat Rod Scott, JaimeDarling & Nigel Pike;all known for theirsuccessful musiccareers in the 70’s, 80’s& 90’s are today at theforefront of Torbay’slocal live musicscene…. But how didthey come to be…?The guys were performing witheach other in the cabaret band‘Something Else’ in 2003. Thenew millennium brought achange in the music sceneand a big shift happenedtowards the acousticstyle. In 2004, Rodand Jai attendedDrew Millin’s(Jai’s Uncle)solo gig andDrewsuggestedthe guysplay.

They proceeded to blast out anacoustic rendition of DeepPurple’s ‘ Smoke on the Water ‘and their performance wentdown so well they were offered aSunday spot at EJ‘s on the spotand so gave birth to ‘Rockology’!

Rockology went on to becomeone of Torbay’s most popularHard Rock Duo’s. They have nowintroduced newer material, abigger sound with drums & basson backing tracks; performingthe music of Alice Cooper,AC/DC, Deep purple, Bon Jovi,Whitesnake and many other bignames from the Hard RockWorld.

After a successful year ofRockology, Jai needed to getback on the drums, EJ‘s wantedan in-house band for a Jam night

and so Jai & Rodenlisted onbass theirgoodfriend

Nigel Pike and the three now gigunder the name of ‘CrossFire’with a set that includes themusic of Jimi Hendrix, DeepPurple, Pink Floyd, GaryMoore etc.

2008 was a busy year for theguys and Jai found himself doinga handful of solo gigs usingstudio quality backing tracks. Jaicame up with a Meat Loaf likealter ego known as ‘ Jai Rocks ‘performing the songs of MeatLoaf, Bon Jovi, Poison, Tom petty,U2, a selection of 70’s glam Rockand 80’s pop. Over the past 4years Jai has firmly made hismark as one of the best vocalistsin the area.

Jai & Rod with Rockology will becelebrating their 9th year, 8 yrs ofCrossfire with Nigel Pike & 4years of Jai Rocks. Not forgettingof course, to help secure the livemusic scene in Torbay Jai &Nigel have joined forces withlocal guitarist Scott Mcgowan tohost a weekly Jam / open micnight at The Lime Tree, Paigntonon Wednesdays, from which twolocal bands have been formed.

The band’s first album “Presentingthe Simmertones, Volume 1”,featuring a wild reworking of the DrWho theme tune was recordedunder the guidance of Richard DigbySmith (who has previously workedwith the likes of Bob Marley, LedZeppelin, Sparks and Free at IslandRecords).

2011 was a great year for TheSimmertones. It saw the release ofour E.P “Every Things Coming UpSka”. Featuring Ocean ColourScene/Paul Wellers guitarist SteveCradock on three of the tracks. Oneof our own compostitions “BringYou’re Lovin To Me” received airplayon Alex Lesters and Gideon Coesshows on Radio2.

In July of last year the Simmertonesheld a launch party for the E.P to acrowd of over 500 fans in a venue inTorquay. Joining us on stage thatnight was Steve Cradock; It was asuperb night!

Another highlight for the band lastyear was working with the actor PhilDaniels. Phil came to one of our gigswhere we asked him if he would doa voice over for a promo video forthe EP. He agreed to help us but inreturn asked if we would record asong that he had written! This isvery exciting for the band when youthink the last song he featured onwas Parklife with Blur.

This year has got off to a good start. With all the radio airplay we havebeen receiving we have had toregister our record label; WindrushRecordings. (Named after HMSWindrush, that brought over the firstimmigrants from Jamaica in the1950s). It was these people alongwith and the help of Island RecordsChris Blackwell that brought Skamusic to these shores.

The Simmertones are to ‘defend’their South West Music Award asBest Ska/Reggae Band which they

won in 2011. Regardless of thepanel of judges decision The Bandwill have built on their success andbecame the headline act for manyfestivals this year.

Most exciting news is that the guysare currently recording at Music MillStudios for their new CD entitled‘Presenting The Simmertones Vol 2’.News of a very special guestappearing on the record is a tightlyguarded secret, but they arebursting to make an announcement!Brand new original self pennedsongs are now in the set-list andgoing down well at gigs. Withtrusted & respected ProducerRichard ‘Digby’ Smith, formally ofIsland Records, the studio waresshould lift The Simmertones profilefurther.

Live

6th April

The Jefferson Archivehave taken a leapforward back in time

to re-visit and re-work someof the seminal tracks of the60’s and 70’s rock scene, delivering a powerful vintagesound. No cheesy covers onthe menu with these guys. No, definitely not your usualpub fayre. The recipe for theirgrowing success andrecognition as one of Devon’sfinest classic rock bandscalled for the finestingredients. Any shopping listwould have to start with frontman Jefferson Tierney, who’s

stage presenceand Robert Plantgood looks promisemuch. The thing is,in this age of tributeacts and themed bands,Tierney is the real deal. Thisbecomes obvious when heplays his belovedStratocaster. Not a wellrehearsed mimic, but a careermusician and truly creativeplayer whose quality anddepth deliver an authenticand fitting homage to theGods of Rock. Backing upTierney’s virtuosoperformance are Steve

Marks on bassand Steve Everetton drums, bothfine musicians intheir own right.

Marks’ accomplishedbass playing feels of the

time and when mixed withEverett’s Bonham influenceddrumming style delivers thepunch, drive and dynamicwhich when added toTierney’s genius, astounds. IfHi-Fidelity Zeppelin, Hendrix,Cream, Fleetwood Mac andmore are on your shoppinglist, these guys deliver.

You will find magic in abundancethis year; with the all-new show for2013, SPELLBOUND at Torquay’scelebrated venue, the BabbacombeTheatre.

The show promises you anexplosion of exhilarating splendour,a cast to surpass the boundaries oftalent, with comedy, illusion, songand dance to enthral.

Curtain goes up for the first of 75performances on Tuesday 12thFebruary. The show will run everyTuesday & Wednesday at 8.15pm upto and including the 23rd October, with a matinee performance at2.30pm on Wednesday 10th July.

The producer, Colin Matthews hasbought together for your viewingpleasure, stars of stage, screen andthe music industry to enable him toconjure up a cornucopia ofentertainment.

Headlining is Phil Lowen who is insuch demand it has taken the venue9 years to get him to return sincehis last season in 2004, with HookedOn Laughter. Phil is one of the UK’smost successful comedyimpressionists. His act is zany, energetic, very visual and alwayshilarious.

Joining Phil on stage, albeit he mayhave need of a stepladder, is thediminutive, Dean Winters. He will setyou all in a spin with his big voiceand cheeky humour, a genuinelyfunny and versatile performer.

Bewitching international, singingsensation, Keedie, is just as adept atinterpreting a pop song, as she isthe most opulent of arias. Listen toher sing and suddenly the ordinarybecomes extraordinary! With,Babbacombe favourite, West Endvocalist Paul Cobley also able topush boundaries with his vocalchords, expect to be whisked away,as their voices will ring together asone.

The British Magical Champion ofIllusion is the shows special gueststar. Daniel Dean has a natural flairto captivate you with his mastery formagic and illusion and there’smore… he can sing and make youlaugh to, albeit “ not at the sametime!” with his fine voice andpersonable patter.

Capturing the ambience of all that’smystical is another stunning vocalistStephanie Blackler. Winner ofTorbay’s Got Talent and one of theheadlining acts in last seasons 5star hit show,West End Now,Stephanie will champion somesuperb show songs and win youover with her mesmerising stagepresence.

It is no mystery as to why thevivacious, Danze Magique cancharm an audience? Daring are thetalents of resident choreographer,Georgia Lee, her skilful musicalinterpretation combines well withthe exciting arrangements of PeteLeonard and the versatile dancersmake light work of the routines thatcan literally suggest they arefloating on air.

The real secret to magic lies in theperformance, and collectivelyeverybody involved in Spellbound, including the junior cast Trix, want toturn illusion into reality….but “ Could It Be Magic?”
