Feeding Relationships

All food chains start with ENERGY from the sun

Page 8: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Because plants produce their own food, they are called ‘Producers’

Page 9: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

The energy is then passed on to animals when they eat the plant.

Page 10: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Animals of all shapes…

…and sizes!

Page 13: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Because these animalsare the first to takethe food energyfrom the plants,

They are called primary consumers

Page 14: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Some of these primary consumers have predators. Other animals that feed on them

Page 15: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Aphids are eaten by….

Page 16: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Ladybirds

Page 17: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Animals that eat primary consumers are called secondary consumers

Page 18: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

• So far this is a straightforward food chain

• Sun → aphid → ladybird

But in reality it is more complicated than that

Page 19: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

This bird eats ladybirds and

aphids

Page 20: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

This bird eats smaller birds, mice, and

rabbits

Page 21: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Mice and rabbits have other predators

Page 22: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

What will eat the frog?

What do you think the frog

eats?

Page 23: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Sometimes it’s not entirely clear who

eats who!

Page 24: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

We can show what goes on with the help of a Food Web

Page 25: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

What would happen if a disease killed off many of the hawks?

Page 26: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

There will be nothing to eat the snakes, so their numbers will

increase.

Page 27: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

All the frogs get eaten

Page 28: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

No frogs.

More crickets

Page 29: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Most of the cattail gets eaten by the

crickets

Page 30: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

Now the crickets don’t have enough

food so their numbers go down

Page 31: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

..and so on. Numbers of each species have an effect on the numbers of the other species in the web.

Page 32: Feeding Relationships A food chain shows a simple feeding relationship. Sun → All food chains start with the sun.

• Use the food web worksheet to predict what might happen in the following situations:

• A) There is very little rain and much of the Marsh Grass and Cattail die off.

• B) Humans nearby bring cats into the area.

• C) The frogs eats some poisoned slugs from a garden
