Chegados a Dezembro, mês que assinala a mais sim-bólica e universal de todas as Festividades, a Quadra Natalícia, é pois, tempo de reencontro, convívio e re-flexão, em que a esperança se torna sempre mais forte e inabalável para as nossas vidas. Nesta altura, em que o Concelho se “veste” de luz, cor e animação um pou-co por todo o lado, começo por destacar o 18º. Concer-to de Natal, pela Orquestra do Algarve, a ter lugar na Igreja de S. Pedro do Mar, em Quarteira. A tradicional Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Quarteira, padroeira desta cidade, numa iniciativa com características muito peculiares e protagonizada an-cestralmente por gerações de pescadores, bem como a Feira da Serra, um dos certames mais aguardados do calendário de Inverno, a decorrer no Pavilhão do NERA, reunindo o que de melhor e mais típico se produz na serra, constituem igualmente eventos a ter em conta. A animar Loulé teremos também a 4ª. edição da TUAL-LE – Festival de Tunas do INUAF, no palco do Cine-Tea-tro Louletano. No plano desportivo, refira-se o Torneio Internacional de Golfe Juvenil, no cenário aprazível de Vilamoura, bem como a realização, em Quarteira, da última etapa do “Surf – Algarve – 2011”. Outra sugestão a salientar é naturalmente a Passagem do Ano, em agradável convívio na cidade de Quarteira, junto ao mar, onde se poderá assistir a um espectáculo imperdível, de fogo de artifício.Nesta ocasião especial, em que importa realçar a nos-sa já comprovada capacidade de aceitar e vencer desa-fios, por mais exigentes que sejam, aproveito desde já para formular, aos munícipes em geral e a todos os que nos visitam, os mais sinceros votos de Boas Festas e um Ano Novo pleno de realizações.Para todos, o meu Bem Hajam.

Having reached December, the month that marks the Christmas Season, the most symbolic and universal of all Festivities, it is now time for reuniting, for getting together and for reflecting and also the time when the hopes in our lives become ever stronger and unshaka-ble. At this time of the year, when the County all around “dresses up” in light, colours and animation, I begin by highlighting the 18th Christmas Concert by the Algarve Orchestra, in the S. Pedro do Mar church in Quarteira. Also worth taking into account is the traditional Feast in honour of Our Lady of Conception, in Quarteira, the pa-tron saint of this town, an initiative with very peculiar features and ancestrally lead by generations of fisher-men, and the Mountain Fair, one of the most await-ed events on the Winter calendar, which takes place in the NERA Pavilion and where you will find the best and most typical products of the mountain. To animate Loulé we shall also have the 4th edition of the TUALLE – INUAF University Musical Group on the stage of the Lou-letano Cinema and Theatre. In the area of sports, the International Youth Golf Tournament deserves men-tioning, taking place in the pleasant scenario of Vilam-oura, as well as the last stage of the “2011 – Algarve – Surf”, to be held in Quarteira. Another suggestion worth highlighting is, of course, New Year’s Eve which you may spend socializing in Quarteira, by the sea, enjoying an unmissable fire-works show.At this special occasion, when it is important to stress our already proven capacity to take on and rise above the challenges, regardless of how demanding they may be, I wish all citizens at large as well as those who visit us a Merry Christmas and a successful New Year.All the best to everyone.

O artista, natural de Monchique, apresenta nos seus tra-balhos, “uma inquietação profunda, uma vontade de descobrir e revelar horizontes novos”, explica a nota de apresentação da mostra.“As suas obras são verdadeiras peças únicas pois cada uma delas resulta de uma abordagem diferente, feita do con-fronto entre os elementos da composição, das cores e do gesto”, pode ler-se ainda sobre a exposição, que ficará pa-tente até 15 de Dezembro.

The artist, who is a native of Monchique, presents in his work, a ‘deep restlessness and a will to discover and disclose new ho-rizons’, it says in the exhibit presentation note.‘His works are truly unique items, as each and every one of them results from a different approach, from the confrontation between the elements in the composition, the colours and the gesture’, one can further read in the presentation note of this exhibition that which will be on display until the 15 December.

“Início da Abstração” é o nome da exposição de trabalhos de Gabriel Rosa que a Galeria da Praça do Mar vai apre-sentar até ao 08 de Janeiro.O jovem artista é natural de Quarteira tem-se dedicado à pintura e desenho, dando particular enfoque ao estu-do das técnicas e perspectivas dos grandes nomes da pin-tura abstracta.O seu trabalho acaba por reflectir essas aprendizagens e a forma como foram compreendidas pelo artista que agora foi convidado para apresentar os seus trabalhos na sua cidade natal.Esta é a primeira exposição individual de Gabriel Rosa que desde 2009 se tem dedicado à pintura expressionis-ta abstracta.

‘The beginning of the Abstraction’ is the name of the exhibi-tion of the works of Gabriel Rosa that will be on display in the Praça do Mar Art Gallery until the 8 January.The young artist, who is a native of Quarteira, has devoted himself to painting and drawing, focusing in particular on the study of the techniques and on the perspectives of great names in abstract painting.His work eventually reflects these learnings and the way how he perceived them; he has now been invited to exhibit his work in his home town.This is the first individual exhibition of Gabriel Rosa, an art-ist who has devoted himself to abstract expressionist painting.

Idalina Maria Rocheta Rodrigues, natural de Pereiras--Quarteira e residente em Portimão, professora do En-sino Básico, com vários cursos de especialização em administração escolar, na situação de aposentada, pro-fessora voluntária em universidades seniores, inves-tigadora e empenhada em grandes causas sociais, apresenta-nos esta sua obra “Momentos da Jubilação” que constitui um verdadeiro hino à alegria de viver e de prosseguir um projecto de vida.Tal como nos diz a autora neste seu livro “coloco tijolos de fé num alicerce de entusiasmo, pinto com cores alegres e decoro de bondade as tarefas às quais me dedico. Sinto que a minha convicção não tem idade!...”Compreende-se neste seu livro toda a dedicação e en-tusiasmo às causas que abraça, desde leccionar, pintar, servir a comunidade, conviver, partilhar sentimentos, sa-beres e experiências, etc. Uma obra que nos desperta pa-ra a beleza da vida…

Idalina Maria Rocheta Rodrigues was born in Pereiras-Quar-teira and lives in Portimão. A retired primary school teacher, with several specialisation courses in school administration, she is currently a volunteer teacher at universities for the third age and a researcher, who is deeply committed to social caus-es. And now she presents us with her book “Momentos da Ju-bilação” (Moments of Jubilation), which is a true ode to the joy of living and pursuing a meaningful project.As the author puts it in this book ‘I place bricks of faith on a foundation of enthusiasm, I paint with joyful colours and decorate my tasks with kindness. I feel that my conviction is ageless!...’This book echoes all the dedication and enthusiasm she feels for the causes she is engaged with, including teaching, paint-ing, serving the community, socialising, sharing feelings, knowledge and experiences, etc. A book that opens our eyes to life’s beauty…

Este Festival leva já 3 edições tendo a primeira aconteci-do no ano de 2000, a segunda em 2003 e a última no ano de 2005 que deu origem à edição de um CD. Regressa no-vamente neste ano de 2011 numa nova data, integrando as comemorações de mais um aniversário da Tualle. As-sim nos dias 2 e 3 de Dezembro o Cine-Teatro Louletano irá receber 4 Tunas a concurso e 2 extra concurso, em du-as noites que se esperam de muita música, boa disposição e espírito académico.

This Festival has already had 3 editions, the first of which took place in 2000, the second in 2003, and the last in 2005 which was launched on CD. It returns again in 2011 with a new date, encompassing the celebrations of another Tualle anni-versary. Therefore, on 2 and 3 December the Louletano Cin-ema and Theatre will welcome 4 competing University Music Groups and 2 outside the competition, on two evenings that will hopefully provide lots of music, fun and academic spirit.

A Padroeira dos pescadores de Quarteira e também de Por-tugal sai à rua nos próximos dias 7 e 8 de Dezembro na-quela que é a festa religiosa mais importante da cidade.Assim, no primeiro dia das comemorações, pelas 21H00, a imagem da Santa Protectora sai em procissão da Igre-ja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição até à Igreja de São Pe-dro do Mar.No dia 8, dia principal das comemorações, realiza-se a al-vorada pela manhã e à tarde, pelas 14H30, a procissão que levará a imagem pela marginal de Quarteira até ao Porto de Abrigo. O ponto alto desta festa é a viagem de barco da Padroeira, acompanhada pela crença de muitos fiéis que aqui se deslocam, especialmente pelos pescadores que com as suas embarcações demonstram toda a devoção e afecto pela sua protectora. Para além das comemorações religiosas, a animação e o convívio complementam os festejos que terminam com o tradicional fogo de artifício.

The Patron Saint of the fishermen from Quarteira and of the rest of Portugal, takes to the street on the 7 and 8 December in what is this town’s most important religious feast.Thus, on the first day of the celebrations, around 9.00 pm, the image of the Patron Saint leaves the Church of Our Lady of the Conception in procession and is carried down to St. Peter of the Sea’s Church.On the 8, the main day of the celebration, fireworks will greet the sunrise and in the afternoon, at 2.30 pm, the statue will be carried in procession along the waterfront boulevard of Quar-teira, down to the harbour. The high point of the event is the Patron Saint’s boat trip, escorted by the belief of many faith-ful who come here to attend this event, especially fishermen in their boats, in a display of their devotion and affection for their protectress. In addition to the religious celebrations, animation and con-viviality complement the festivities that end with the tradi-tional fireworks show.

A música antecede o gran-dioso fogo de artifício na Praça do Mar, juntando muitas centenas de pessoas não só do concelho, mas também de muitos locais do nosso país e do estrangeiro que nos visi-tam nesta altura do ano. Apesar da forte contenção orçamental, a autarquia loule-tana não quer privar os seus munícipes de fazerem a tran-sição do ano velho para o novo, com um espectáculo que serve essencialmente como “voto” de esperança para um ano melhor e mais próspero.

New Year’s Eve will, once again, be celebrated in Quarteira in a scenario that combines the sea and the land, where the atmos-phere of music and fireworks will be the focus of the union. Music will pave the way for the magnificent display of fire-works on the Praça do Mar square, attracting many people not only from the county but also from many other parts of the country and from abroad, who visit us at this time of the year. Despite the strong budgetary constraints, the municipality of Loulé does not wish to deprive its townsmen from celebrat-ing the turn of the year, with a show that is meant to be first and foremost a ‘vote’ of hope on a better and more prosper-ous new year.

De 2 a 4 de Dezembro, o Pavilhão do NERA, na Zona Indus-trial de Loulé, volta a ser palco de mais uma edição da em-blemática Feira da Serra de Loulé. O certame vai contar com expositores de artesanato, com artesãos originários maioritariamente da serra algarvia, que aqui estarão a trabalhar “ao vivo”, bem como stands de produtos agro-alimentares. À semelhança do que tem acontecido nos últimos anos, em destaque vai estar uma exposição, desta feita dedi-cada às “Tradições Serranas – Matança do Porco”. Através de imagens e de objectos, pretende-se recriar todo o ci-clo desta tradição secular, que vai desde a criação dos por-cos, passando pelo momento em que o animal é morto, ao seu tratamento, até ao aproveitamento do animal para a ali-mentação, nomeadamente para os tão apreciados enchidos.Esta mostra de produtos tradicionais constitui uma ex-celente oportunidade para os visitantes fazerem as suas compras de Natal.O horário de funcionamento do certame é o seguinte: dia 2 de dezembro (sexta-feira), das 18h00 às 00h00; dia 3 de dezembro (sábado), das 14h00 às 00h00; dia 4 de dezem-bro (domingo), das 14h00 às 21h00. From the 2 to the 4 December, the NERA Pavilion, in Loulé’s In-dustrial District will, once again, be the stage for another edi-tion of the emblematic Loulé Mountain Fair. The fair will include stands with arts and crafts, produced by artisans mostly from the Algarve mountains who will be work-ing on site, ‘live’, as well as agro-food stands. As in the previous years, focus will be given to one exhibi-tion stand, this year dedicated to one of the “Mountain Tradi-tions – the Slaughter of the Pig’. Through images and objects the whole cycle of this secular tradition is recreated, from pig keeping to the moment when the animal is slaughtered and to the processing and the transformation of the meat and offal into food products, viz. the popular smoked sausages.This display of traditional products is an excellent opportunity for visitors to do their Christmas shopping.Trading hours: 2 December (Friday), from 6.00 pm to 0.00; 3 December (Saturday), from 2.00 pm to 0.00; 4 December (Sun-day), from 2.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Numa competição aberta a jovens entre os 10 e os 18 anos, o Clube de Golfe de Vilamoura organiza pela décima vez o torneio internacional de golfe juvenil no município de Loulé que terá lugar nos dias 17 e 18 de Dezembro. A competição vai desenrolar-se em “stoke play” (36 bu-racos; 18 por dia) iniciando-se pelas 07h30 no sábado e no domingo. A entrega de prémios está reservada para as 14h00 do dia 18, domingo.

In a competition open to young players between 10 and 18, the Vilamoura Golf Club will host, for the tenth time, the Loulé Municipality International Junior Golf Tournament that will take place on the 17th and 18th December. The competition will be conducted as ‘stoke play’ (36 holes; 18 per day) starting at 7.30 am on Saturday and Sunday. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, the 18th, at 2.00 pm.

A praia do Garrão vai receber mais uma vez um concurso internacional de pesca desportiva. Esta competição de mar vai já na sua décima primeira edição e contará com pescadores de todo o Algarve e ainda com alguns compe-tidores nacionais e estrangeiros, especialmente da vizinha Espanha.A prova, baseada na regulamentação da Federação Portu-guesa de Pesca Desportiva, terá prémios e troféus para os primeiros 25 classificados e ainda para o maior exemplar, maior quantidade, para o melhor concorrente jovem e o melhor sócio do clube.A competição realiza-se no dia 4 de Dezembro, com inicio às 08H00 e termina às 12H00, seguindo-se um almoço con-vívio e a entrega de prémios.Este é mais um evento de prestígio organizado pelo Clube Náutico e de Pesca Desportiva de Quarteira.

The Garrão beach will, once again, be the venue for an interna-tional sport fishing contest. This sea fishing competition, now in its 11th edition, will be attended by fishermen from across the Algarve, as well as by national and foreign competitors, es-pecially from the neighbouring Spain.The contest is based on the rules of the Portuguese Sport Fish-ing Federation and trophies and prizes will be awarded to the first 25 classified participants, as well as for the largest species, the biggest catch, the best young competitor and the club’s best member.The competition that will take place on the 4 December, starts at 8.00 am and ends at 12 noon, followed by a lunch and by the awards ceremony.This is yet another prestigious event organized by the Quar-teira Nautical and Sport Fishing Club.

A Praia de Quarteira recebe a 5ª e última etapa do Circui-to de Surf Algarve 2011, no fim-de-semana de 03 e 04 de Dezembro.A competição divide-se nas categorias de Sub-12, Sub-16, Open, Longboard e Open Feminino.O Circuito de Surf Algarve tem o objectivo de contribuir pa-ra o desenvolvimento sustentado da modalidade na zona Sul e, sendo o mais importante conjunto de provas na re-gião, é esperada uma grande afluência de participantes, não só algarvios mas de todo o país.Durante o fim-de-semana, para além do campeonato de surf, decorrem outras actividades.

SÍTIOS E TRADIÇÕES PLACES AND TRADITIONS

Casarão, situado no limite de três concelhos, Loulé, Silves e Almodôvar, pertence à freguesia de Alte e tem as carac-terísticas típicas de uma aldeia serrana.Sítio desabitado foi outrora um importante local agríco-la, onde a produção de medronho servia de sustento de al-gumas famílias, que também cultivavam cereais e criavam gado ovino. Ainda existem marcas dessas actividades, co-mo um armazém onde se destilava e guardava o medronho.Fomos ao encontro de Lucília Rodrigues Coelho, de 79 anos de idade, que viveu no Casarão e trabalhou para uma fa-mília que era proprietária dessa pequena indústria do me-dronho e da actividade agrícola naquela zona.Na freguesia de Alte existem muitos sítios dispersos, on-de a agricultura de subsistência foi durante muitos anos a única fonte de rendimento das famílias que ali viviam.

Casarão, situated on the frontier of three counties, Loulé, Silves and Almodôvar, belongs to the Alte commune and is a typical mountain village.Currently uninhabited, it was once an important agricultural place where the production of arbutus berry brandy was the livelihood of several families, who also grew grain and raised sheep. There is still evidence of these activities, like a barn where the arbutus fruit was distilled and stored.We met Lucília Rodrigues Coelho, 79 years old, who lived in Casarão and worked for a family that owned this small arbutus berry distillery and the agricultural activity in the area.In the Alte Commune there are many scattered places, where subsistence agriculture was for many years the only source of income for the families that lived there.

OS PRESIDENTES DO MUNICÍPIO MAYORS OF LOULÉ

Francisco Guerreiro Barros was born in Loulé in 1893 and died in Faro on 4 June 1974.A tradesman, son of Vitoriano José das Almas and Sebastiana do Carmo Palermo de Barros, he undertook his first studies in his hometown and at the São José Seminary, in Faro. Up-on abandoning the ecclesiastical life, he enrolled at the Esco-la Primária Superior and at the Escola do Magistério Primário (Primary Teaching Schools) in the same city, having complet-ed the degrees which he never used, as he chose to trade in dried fruits.He was Head of the Administration of the Faro high school, he was deputy mayor and mayor of Faro Town Hall and mayor of Loulé Town Hall, in both of which his name became associated to significant local developments.It is during his time as mayor that the Municipal Library was definitively established in the Town Hall building, with sup-port from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The work was continued in the educational plan, the construction of schools and creation of evening classes for adults, and the location study for the Loulé Industrial and Commercial School.He was also a member of the Board of the Faro District Welfare Fund, president of the Faro Rotary Club and Chairman of the Board of the Algarve Fruits and Vegetables Exporters’ Associ-ation, an institution which he provided significant services to.

Francisco Guerreiro Barros nasceu em Loulé em 1893 e faleceu em Faro a 4 de Junho de 1974.Comerciante, filho de Vitoriano José das Almas e de Sebastia-na do Carmo Palermo de Barros, fez na terra natal e no Semi-nário de São José, de Faro, os primeiros estudos e abandonada a vida eclesiástica matriculou-se na Escola Primária Superior e na Escola do Magistério Primário na mesma cidade, cujos cur-sos concluiu mas não chegou a utilizar, dedicando-se ao co-mércio de frutos secos.Foi Chefe de Secretaria do Liceu de Faro, foi vereador, vice-pre-sidente e presidente da Câmara Municipal de Faro e presiden-te da Câmara de Loulé, em ambas deixando o seu nome ligado a importantes melhoramentos locais.É durante a sua presidência que se instala definitivamente a Biblioteca Municipal, com o apoio da Fundação Calouste Gul-benkian, no edifício dos Paços do Concelho. Dá-se continuida-de ao trabalho no plano educacional, de construção de escolas e cursos nocturnos para adultos, e o estudo de localização da Escola Industrial e Comercial de Loulé.Foi ainda membro da Direcção da Caixa de Previdência e Abo-no de Família do Distrito de Faro, presidente do Rotary Clube de Faro e Presidente da Direcção do Grémio dos Exportadores de Frutos e Produtos Hortícolas do Algarve, instituição a que prestou os mais relevantes serviços.

Artéria de construção recente (anos 80 do século XX), to-mou o nome de Sebastião Philippes Martins Estácio da Vei-ga, notável arqueólogo algarvio, a 12 de Março de 1991.Natural de Tavira, onde nasceu a 6 de Maio de 1828, ten-do falecido a 7 de Dezembro de 1891 em Lisboa, Estácio da Veiga foi cavaleiro da Casa Real, frequentou a Escola Po-litécnica de Lisboa e abraçou a carreira burocrática como oficial de secretaria na subinspecção-geral dos Correios e Postas.Estudioso e culto, colaborou em diversos jornais literários e políticos. Interessado pelos estudos arqueológicos foi, em 1876, encarregado oficialmente de proceder ao reco-nhecimento de alguns vestígios de antigos monumentos que as chuvas haviam, neste ano, posto a descoberto no Alentejo e Algarve. As suas principais obras são a Carta Arqueológica do Al-garve e Antiguidades Monumentais do Algarve, ao longo das quais confirma os créditos que, como arqueólogo, fir-mara ao secretariar, em 1880, o Congresso Internacional de Antropologia e de Arqueologia Pré-Histórica, reunido em Lisboa.

This contemporary thoroughfare (constructed during the 1980s) was named after Sebastião Philippes Martins Estácio da Veiga, a renowned archaeologist from the Algarve, on 12 March 1991.He was born in Tavira on 6 May 1828 and died on 7 Decem-ber 1891 in Lisbon. Estácio da Veiga was a knight of the Royal House of Portugal, he attended the Polytechnic School of Lis-bon and embraced a bureaucratic career as secretariat officer at the Postal Subinspectorate Geral.As a scholar, he worked for several literary and political jour-nals. In 1876, his interest in archaeological studies led him to be officially assigned to investigate some remains of ancient monuments that had been uncovered by rain in the Alentejo and Algarve during that year. His main works are Carta Arqueológica do Algarve and Antigu-idades Monumentais do Algarve, through which he confirms the accolades that he was granted as an archaeologist when he organised the International Pre-Historic Anthropology and Archaeology Congress, held in Lisbon in 1880.

É grande a devo-ção dos cristãos, fascinados com a sua vida e o seu exem-plo, desde o seu nascimento até à sua morte e ressurreição.Entoar cânticos e beijar o Menino são tradições seculares do Natal cristão, costumes que traduzem a grande adora-ção dos fiéis.

The item of restored sacred art that we present in December is the image of Baby Jesus in ivory, from the Indo-Portuguese School, which belongs to the Misericórdia Church in Loulé.Baby Jesus is the liberator, the redeemer, the saviour, belov-ed by believers and respected by non-believers. He is beautiful and sweet, wonderful and cherished, the supreme king who makes us reflect on all Humanity, especially during this holi-day season that promotes the spirit of brotherhood.Many artists have painted or sculpted the Baby Jesus in sub-lime manners that highlight all his beauty, holiness and pure innocence. The sense of devotion is strong for Christians, who are fascinated by his life and his example, from his birth until his death and resurrection.Singing hymns and kissing the figure of Baby Jesus are secular traditions of the Christian Christmas, customs that highlight the strong adoration of the faithful.

SOPAS DE PÃO CASEIRO RIJO COM BACALHAU E POEJOS

Ingredientes4 Postas de Bacalhau; 2 Tomates maduros; 1 dl de Azeite; 1 Molhinho de Poejo; 1 Cebola média; 2 Dentes de Alho; 1 Folha de Louro; Pão Caseiro Rijo; Sal q.b.

PreparaçãoPica-se a cebola e os alhos e colocam-se a refogar com o azeite até dourar, juntamente com a folha de louro. Se-guidamente colocam-se os tomates picados, tempera-se com sal e deixa-se cozer. A seguir juntam-se as postas de bacalhau até cozer e o poejo picado. Entretanto corta-se o pão em pequenas fatias num recipiente, deita-se o pre-parado nas sopas de pão e abafa-se com um prato duran-te 15 minutos.

COD AND HOMEMADE BREADSOUP WITH PENNYROYAL

Ingredients4 portions of desalted cod; 2 ripe tomatoes; 1 dl olive oil; 1 small sheaf of pennyroyal; 1 medium sized onion; 2 cloves of garlic; 1 bay leaf; loaves of stale homemade bread; salt to taste.

PreparationChop the onion and the garlic and let it stew in a pan in the olive oil together with the bay leaf, until the onion has turned golden brown. Add the chopped tomatoes, season with salt and let it cook. Add the portions of desalted cod and let it cook some more; add the chopped pennyroyal. Meanwhile cut the bread in small loaves and place them in a large bowl, pour the soup over the bread and cover with a dish for about 15 min-utes before serving.
